When I started my first business in Queenstown, and began paying my fair
share of tax, I was of course interested in where and how that tax money was
spent. Living in Queenstown, the land of wealth and plenty, it seemed my tax
money was not needed. The town kept on growing and my business kept on
paying our tax. Where that money went I had no idea. Up north somewhere I
presume.
Even in the tough times, like the 1999 flood when the Queenstown CBD was
out of action for months. When Al-Qaeda hit the twin towers in New York,
bird flu struck Asia, an ash cloud hovered over the Southern Hemisphere, or
when the world went into serious financial meltdown, I do not know any local
business operator who put their hand out to the Helen Clark or John Key
Governments. The Queenstown tourism industry just sucked it up and kept on
paying our PAYE and income tax, GST, provisional and company tax. Where
that tax money went was obviously not here in Queenstown.
We did not complain and just got on with making this town successful. However
it did grind my gears whenever a little rain fell, or did not fall, to see the “poor”
farmers put out their hands for a Government handout. Primary industry is the
backbone of the country we were told. If they felt the pain, we all would. That
did not make me feel any better when at the height of the dairy riches a few
years ago, my bid for a family home in Arrowtown was blown out of the water
by a woollen jersey and gumboot wearing cow cocky from Southland with more
dollars than sense.

and Emma Pullar as Grace Farrell in Showbiz QT’s production

Now the tide has turned. New Zealand has woken up and realised our
future should not be built on farming alone but rather tourism. Yet years of
neglect have left small towns like Queenstown ill prepared to cope despite
generating millions in tax revenue. In the last week there have been some big
announcements from our government that go some way towards plugging
the hole in New Zealand’s tourism infrastructure. Most of it has been focused
on tourism growth but at least some has been set aside for basic stuff like
toilets. Far too little in my opinion and although government investment in more
bike trails and the evolution of bungy jumping is welcome, there is not much
point trying to achieve growth in tourism when the numbers we push through
Queenstown now is not being matched with infrastructure to make the industry
sustainable. I hope these government gestures towards the tourism industry
are just the beginning of a significant investment in sustainable tourism. If not,
then the drum will keep beating for the introduction of our own tax system so
we can properly sort our infrastructure problems out ourselves.

Traffic Lights
What were they thinking? The idea that by installing traffic
lights at the Ballarat/Stanley Street junction it would ease
congestion in the CBD is ludicrous.
Traffic lights, by design, stop the traffic flow and already
we are seeing a build up of traffic at a time when the town
is relatively quiet. Roundabounds, on the other hand, are
designed to keep the traffic flowing.
The problem was not the roundabout but the busy
pedestrian crossing next to it. Whenever a pedestrian
stepped on to it all traffic stopped. Surely the solution is
to deal with the pedestrians. A pedestrian footbridge in
place of the crossing would allow the pedestrians to cross
safely and the traffic to flow and would have cost a fraction
of the price.
If, as I suspect, the lights prove to be a disaster when the
town fills up for the ski season, will the council act quickly
to rectify the situation? I somehow doubt it.
A Frustrated Driver
The signals were developed with the full support of
Queenstown Lakes District Council. As drivers become
familiar with the signal operation, the Transport Agency
will be able to optimise the light phasing, leading to more
efficient operation of the intersection.
So why not a pedestrian footbridge?
A pedestrian footbridge was ruled out on several
grounds - mainly impracticality. This route is used for overdimension vehicles (eg trucks carrying houses on trailers)
which requires a significant clearance. There are also issues
with accessibility for people with disabilities, cyclists,
parents with buggies. The cost would be significantly more
than the cost of the traffic signals.
In the meantime, Queenstown drivers need to obey the
traffic signals and put pedestrian safety first. The primary
driver of this change was safety for pedestrians.
I’ve been living in 3 different houses in the past 5 months,
now renting a room in a 2 bedroom unit I’m sharing with
a friend, but I’m still not allowed to host a friend overnight
unless I pay the price of a hostel bed per night for my guest
- in addition to my weekly rent. Since this is not acceptable
for me to ask my friends or family to pay for their stay at
my place, the only way I can afford to have friends and
family visit me is to work another 10 hours per week (and
I already work 60 hours).
Since long before I came to New Zealand, I’ve heard
from many people that Kiwis are really nice and helpful,
which is probably the case in the rest of NZ, but
Queenstown, being the self-proclaimed “tourist capital of

Parking Plan For Queenstown Airport? - 549
With all due respect 15 new spaces is hardly going to
make a difference. The thought process that advances
in public transport is going to make a difference is
equally flawed, especially with the geographical
constraints of the Wakatipu Basin... Queenstown
itself is becoming a tawdry location. This is only
enhanced when the first thing people see upon arrival
is cars parked in a hodge podge manner along the
main highway. I doubt that many other businesses in
the Basin would be allowed such a cavalier attitude
when it came to parking.
Dan
The Price Of Freedom?
Once again, I will be talking about the accommodation
problem in the Queenstown area. What’s bothering me
today is the “no guest” policy in rental accommodation.
I’ve been in Queenstown for 5 months and would like
to stay long term but being from Europe, I expect friends
and family to visit me once in a while. From my point of
view, it’s expected that when people spend a lot of time
and money to come and see you, the minimum you can
do is host them for free during their stay as long as it’s not
bothering the other flatmates (I don’t mind paying a bit
more to cover the utility bills). But not in Queenstown.
Are traffic lights going to help
congestion in the CBD?
FACEBOOK/WEBSITE COMMENTS
Response from Tony Sizemore, Transport Planning
Manager, NZ Transport Agency
The traffic signals are primarily about safety for pedestrians
following some concerning reports and a serious crash at
the zebra pedestrian crossing nearly a year ago. An eightyear-old boy was struck by a car which seriously injured
his leg.
ASK ME
New Zealand”, is giving a really poor image of the country
in my opinion. Queenstown is one of the most beautiful
places I’ve lived in, and the lack of workers here has given
me an opportunity to stay with a sponsored work visa, but
I don’t think I’m ready to give up my personal freedom to
be able to live here.
I suggest that something has to be done by the council to
stop the abuse from the accommodation owners. To stop
the rents from increasing uncontrollably. Punishment for
the discrimination towards race, gender and work situation
that occur daily when owners advertise for a room, and
start a long term plan to build affordable accommodation
units for workers.
When my Tenancy Agreement says one of the Landlord’s
responsibility is to “Allow the tenant quiet enjoyment of
the room”, but also specify “no guest after midnight”, it
looks like a legal issue to me. I’m opened to any advice
or rental offer for a long term and affordable 2-3 bedroom
unit.
A Frustrated Queenstowner In Need Of A True
Home
Here is a suggestion... why dont they build an
underground carpark on the lakeside area, between
the school and the FAT. It is a grass park there at
the moment, and nothing can be built above ground
there because it is the aircraft approach zone. They
could build a rather large underground carpark there
without disturbing the grassy area above, they could
have escalators etc, to the airport from there.

The Death Of Adventure Tourism - 548
What we want and need is more Chinese people
in the Queenstown area, especially as residents and
investors. If we took advantage of Chinese investment
and industrious, people especially the naysayers
wouldn’t have to be whinging about lack of housing,
infrastructure, shortage of visitor accommodation,
because it all would have been taken care off quick
smart.

What our clients say...
Secure a suitable new team member
with The Lakes Weekly Bulletin
In the past we have used various media both off and online to varying
degrees of success. Recently we made the decision to use the Lakes
Weekly Bulletin to secure the services of a new receptionist. As a long
term employer in the Queenstown area, I was pleasantly surprised by
the co-operation of the LWB team in ensuring our advertisement was
properly edited, placed and that a follow up message was received from a
LWB team member asking us if we required further assistance. As a result
of the advertisement we were able to receive a large number of quality
applications from which we will no doubt be able to secure a suitable
new team member.
Many thanks LWB.
