Back from Iowa, and getting
ready to teach a seminar here at
my studio.
It's a new week and we hope
you are learning from our
weekly lessons!
On painting a still life with crystal
goblet or vase. They are going to
design their own, Isn't that fun?
First time I have taught a seminar
here at my home. Have classes
with my regular students here
from time to time. If you can survive my bumpy dirt road! Would
love to have you can come by.
Want to do more seminars here
now that the grand kids are now
in Austin, Texas.
There are a a variety of flowers in our garden now, so I
will be able to start painting
them soon. I will be sharing
pictures of them with you.
Many thanks to Karen Grubaugh
for all her work on the Luster
Articles weren't they great. Have
heard a lot of good responses
about them.
See you along the painting trail!
Love to all,
Tami Durbin

Let’s Luster: Marbelizing, Christmas Ornaments and 8x10 luster “portraits”
Karen Grubaugh [email protected]
This week we are going to marbelize luster using marbelizing solutions. These solutions can be
purchased from Rynne China, Tatiana Dallast-Agoritsas and Interdec in Australia. I am sure there
are other suppliers with whom I am not familiar.
www.rynnechina.com
http://www.atelier-clairdelune.com
http://Interdec-australia.com.au
In addition to marbelizing, I am including a photo array of lustered Christmas ornaments and 8x10
luster portraits. Please email me if you would like more detailed information regarding the items
shown and I will include that information in the next article. In fact, email me with any luster questions
and I will answer those, too.
Marbelizing Lusters
There are three sizes of marbles available: large, medium and small. From Interdec they are
numbered 1 for small, 2 for medium and 3 for large. Other suppliers number and name in different
ways, just ask.
In this lesson we will use small and medium marbelizers. I will post a picture of the large marbelizer
on porcelain.
1. Apply luster to piece(s). In this lesson, I applied Doris
Ackilli’s red using a q-tip and turp. Let the luster dry until
tacky or completely dry. I died these with a hair blower.
2. Supplies
Porcelain with dried but unfired luster
Marbelizer(s)
Water
Q-tip or brush for application
3. Carefully apply the marbelizer so that it flows on. Do
not press into the luster with the applicator as these marks
will show after firing.
The heart on the left has marbelizer #1 [small] applied.
The heart on the right does is dried luster only.
The heart on the right has marbelizer #2 or medium
applied. The marbelizer needs to dry completely.
Occasionally, if applied over tacky luster, the marbelizer
will not dry completely. In this case, fire it while tacky.
Dried small marbelizer on the left and medium on the right.
I dried the marbelizer with a hair blower. Notice that the
medium marbelizer on the right already shows some of it’s
lines. Fire at 017.
Fired luster and marbelizer heart ornaments. Marbelizer #1
(small) is on the left and Marbelizer #2 (medium) is on the
right.
A fired blue luster with marbelizer #3 [large] is pictured.
Addtionally, you can fire a coat of copper luster, apply MOP over it, dry the MOP and apply
marbelizer. When the marbelizer is dry, fire it at 017. I have not experimented with other colors of
lusters but intend to do so. I will report my results at that time. The following pictures were taken in
Tatiana’s seminar at Cheri Holder’s Studio in Houston.
Tatiana is applying her marbelizer over the dry MOP which
was applied over fired copper luster. We used this
technique to disguise several imperfections in the
porcelain.
Dry Marbelizer.
Fired once. I
applied a second
coat of MOP, let it
dry, applied a
second coat of
marbelizer over the
MOP and fired again
as I wanted a more
prominent look.
Finished piece designed by Tatiana.
Other marbelized pieces are pictured:

An Alice Wofford Design
When Maria Wazzi wrote to us and asked about baby designs we thought we would look to the past.
Sometimes we have to look to the past to get some ideas. Looking at old cards is one way to do so. I have lots of older
items left to me by my grandmother including patterns for embroidery, etc.
Suggestions for painting the above:
Colors: Baby Blue, Shell Pink, Mixing Yellow, Yellow Red, Pompadour, Sap Green, and Gray
Ink colors: Black Green or Brown Green. Violet of Iron. Light Sepia (tan color). Dark Sepia (slate gray color)
1st Fire:
Outline with pen and ink….. each area on the figure and flowers and leaves as it appears with ink mixed into the following colors.
Gray/Dark Sepia ink—shoes, blue pants on boy and bear, blue flowers, and bear.
Black Green—Leaves and stems
Violet of Iron—Flowers, feet and ears of bear, and ribbon in hair, dress
Light Sepia (tan) - Everything else including skin, hair, eyes, etc.
Fire: .017.
2nd Fire:
Paint the faces and skin with Mixing Yellow very pale. Shade the cheek with Pompadour.
Paint the stripes on the dress, ears of bear and feet of bear, ribbon, and flowers with Shell Pink.
Paint the pants of boy and bear, and the blue flowers with Baby Blue.
Paint the hair, socks, hat and shirt very pale with Mixing Yellow.
Fire to .017
3rd Fire: Add shading to match the above pics. Fire to .017
