Soon after Richard Carter Ltd was incorporated in 1909, World War I broke out and demand
for tools increased dramatically. Indeed, history repeated itself several years later when
World War II placed even greater demand on our services.
The 1970s saw the beginning of the decline of the Nationalised Coal and Steel Industries and
this forced us to seek new markets. This was so successful that, despite many alterations to
the Kirkburton premises during the 1980s, we outgrew Dene Works and in 1999 we moved
again to Neiley Works in Honley. The new premises gave us the opportunity to embrace
state of the art manufacturing techniques which, combined with our heritage, enabled us
to innovate our product design and enhance quality.
It has been three centuries since our founder, Jeremiah Carter, had the vision and courage
to start his Company. The Carter family, are proud of the fact that we still own and run
Richard Carter Ltd. We are prouder still of the people who work here and how far we have
come together. Some may see tradition and innovation as unlikely bedfellows, but for us
they are what we stand for.

Jeremiah Carter established the Company in Highburton in 1740. Business flourished,
and in 1850 Jeremiah's great, great grandson, Richard Carter, relocated the Company to
Dene Works in Kirkburton, which was to become our home for the next 150 years.

SHOVELS
With 275 years of manufacturing experience,
Richard Carter Ltd has become synonymous with
shovels of quality and strength, whilst offering
customers value for money. ‘The Carter Shovel’ is
available in a variety of styles and sizes, finished with
handles which complement the tool, made from wood,
metal, fibreglass or plastic.
SHOVEL & TOOL HANDLE VARIETIES
Solid Socket
Open Socket Shovels are used for moving loose earth, sand, gravel and grain
etc. They are hot-pressed from pre-cut sheets of either hot rolled heavy gauge
Carbon Steel or Aluminium sheet. They are not primarily designed for digging
or levering. This type of shovel is easily identified as Open Socket by the fact
that the end of the handle (normally wood) can be seen protruding through the
bottom of the pressed socket.
Solid socket tools have their blades and sockets hot, double roll formed from one
single piece of best quality steel. The socket is forged as an integral part of the
blade (with NO welds) and this type of tool is readily identified by the fact that
the handle fits into a ‘blind’ socket – this is the most popular range. Solid socket
tools are preferred for heavy shovelling out, or back-filling trenches, mixing
concrete, tarmac and ballast work. A range of handles are available in wood,
steel, aluminium and fibreglass.

This is a plainer and
more economical type
of T-Grip. The handle
top is not as intricately
contoured as the
shaped grip, but being
mortised, tenoned and
glued, it does possess
all the same strength
characteristics.
This is a traditional
Ash T-Grip, having
a sculptured hilt,
ergonomically shaped to
fit the palm of the hand.
The grip and shaft are
mortised and tenoned
and waterproof glued
into place. A wooden
dowel then secures the
grip firmly into place.
This high impact,
moulded polypropylene
T-Grip is normally fitted
to lightweight tubular
products. Contoured
into a non-slip grip, it is
easily kept clean and is
totally weatherproof.
This ‘Y’ or ‘D’ shaped
grip is moulded to
comfortably fit the
hand, from high
impact polypropylene.

OPEN SOCKET SHOVELS
Our Open Socket Shovels are manufactured here in Yorkshire from best quality strip steels or Aluminium – either
hot or cold pressed to a range of standard sizes. These shovels are used for a wide variety of lightweight general
purpose work, from shovelling sand, gravel, earth and coal to shovelling snow and grain, suiting all users
and applications.

Richard Carter Ltd offer a range of Solid Socket tools,
forged from a single piece of best quality carbon steel
(free from any welds), ensuring a durable tool without
weakness. It is heat treated to produce a blade of
supreme strength, whilst retaining flexibility to absorb
the shock and stresses that come with arduous use.
The range is complemented with handles available in
a variety of lengths made from wood, tubular steel,
fibreglass and plastic – a modern tool with a
traditional feel.
All Solid socket tools are load tested and will
outperform the requirements of BS3388.
ASH HANDLES
Our range of Solid Socket tools are designed for strength and durability and will outperform the requirements of
BS3388 under all tests. We manufacture our wooden handles from specially selected Ash and Hardwood timbers,
tapered and deep fitted into the extra long socket to give optimum strength and durability.

ASH MYD HANDLES
Most wooden shafted tools are available with 'T' or chrome plated steel, heavy duty 'MYD' grips. We only use
best quality, specially selected slow growing, straight grained hardwoods. The 'fIower' of the grain is on the side
of the handle for greater strength and flexibility – the strong, straight grain running from front to back. The MYD is
ergonomically designed to comfortably fit the largest of hands.

The Richard Carter Ltd Shocksafe range of PolyFibre Insulated Tools provides full conformity to the exacting
specifications of 'BS8020: Tools for Live Working'.
BS8020:2011 is an exacting specification that demands full adherence to detailed manufacturing and testing
procedures for safe working practices to be maintained by the user when working on or in close proximity to live
conductor cables. Every single tool is flash tested to 10,000 Volts before the issue of a certificate, unique to each
implement. Our guarantee of safety to the user, in a potentially dangerous live-working environment.

Our Shocksafe shovels are doubly protected by twin layers of polymer sheathing, moulded over the rigid fibreglass
core. The orange insulation used for the outer sheathing has been developed for its high voltage and abrasion
resistance properties. If the white inner sleeve becomes visible, the tool should be removed from use around live
working conditions. A specially integrated collar prevents the user’s hand slipping onto the steel blade. Each tool is
flash tested to 10,000 Volts and printed with the BS8020 1000 Volt logo and every tool is uniquely numbered and
certified, thus ensuring total traceability and guaranteeing full conformity to live cable working specifications.
