Middle East
first 7 volumes now available!
Volume 1: Temne of Banda Wharf
Features a variety of male and female vocalists, with
spectacular drumming. The group includes a couple of
professional musicians, but mostly consists of fishermen who
play music as a leisure activity, and women and children from
the village. The style of the singing is call-and-response which
encourages everyone to participate, and gives the music event
a festive atmosphere.
1 CD: item # SL-MO1 $17
Volume 2: Temne of Suctarr
Features a style of Temne music called kagbe, which is
associated with herbalists. The principal instruments are
sangba drums and kongoma. The musicians include male
and female vocalists, and professional drummers. The lyrical
themes are mostly serious or sorrowful, reflections on the life
experiences and living conditions of the musicians, which
demonstrate an acute awareness of the poverty in Sierra
Leone, but also a strong belief in the importance of family
and faith in God.
1 CD: item # SL-MO2 $17
Volume 3: Sorie Kondi
Sorie Kondi is a blind musical genius and a cultural treasure,
able to sing in four different languages. He is also an innovator; he taught himself how to play a little-known traditional
instrument (the kondi) at the age of 15, later electrified it, and
developed a unique style of playing it. Reminiscent of American blues guitarists who went electric in the 1950s. The CD
also contains two bonus tracks from a studio session in which
the kondi was recorded “unplugged.”
1 CD: item # SL-MO3 $17
Volume 4: dances of the secret societies

female society called Bundu. Every year, many parents send
their girls to the “society bush” to learn about the traditions
and customs of their culture. Bundu is the most influential and
prolific of the societies. This CD has both ceremonial songs
and festive songs, but all the music is made for dancing. The
instruments include a large double-sided bass drum, small
high-pitched drums called sangba, and a gourd-rattle.

This unique anthology being produced by Luke Wassermann hopes to put
Sierra Leone on the map of world music and highlights the diversity of
styles amongst the nation’s many ethno-linguistic groups. Sierra Leone
spent the end of the 20th century in a brutal civil war, but this series tells
the inspirational stories of the resilient musicians that have so much to
offer their beautiful country in this new millennium.
Each volume includes a 12-page booklet with background information,
musical analysis, song translations, color photographs, and in some cases,
interview transcripts. All recordings made on location in Sierra Leone.
Volume 5: susu of lungi
This group of stellar Susu singers, balangi players and percussionists play music with roots in Guinea. Some of the songs
are about love, and other praise heroic or accomplished individuals. Two of the songs are instrumental-only with spectacular solos on the balangi, a xylophone with gourds mounted
underneath the keys.
1 CD: item # SL-MO5 $17
Volume 6: mende of moyamba
Features the Salina Cultural Dance Troupe, a group formed
at a refugee camp during the civil war. They sing in Mende,
the most widely spoken tribal language in Sierra Leone. The
instruments that provide the exciting rhythmic variation are
the keleng and the shegbere. The sangba and gbeteh drums
provide the irresistible grooves on which the music relies,
while Kadiatu Williams, the lead female vocalist, sings both
the inspirational and sorrowful.
1 CD: item # SL-MO6 $17
Volume 7: folk Songs of Sherbro Island
Abdul Sheriff and Ansumama Fai, a young duo from Bonthe

singers make their living through a residence on the M.B. Halala, a wooden passenger boat. Sheriff sings in Mende, Krio,
and Sherbro, while simultaneously strumming his hand-carved
konigai and beating a large resonant box with the heel of his
foot. Fai adds rhythmic fervor with the two-sided kowi drum
and a tin pan.
