Opening minutes…...
The Objectives of
Rotary International:
 The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.
 High ethical standards in
business and professions;
the recognition of the
worthiness of all useful
occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s
occupation as an opportunity to serve society.
 The application of the
ideal of service in each
Rotarian’s personal, business and community life.
 The advancement of international understanding,
goodwill, and peace
through a world fellowship
of business and professional persons united in
the ideal of
service.
On a glorious
spring morning,
Bud “I am Always Exciting”
Ackerman rang
the bell to start
the 37th meeting of the 23rd term of the
Point West Rotary, Sacramento.
The Pledge was admirably led by Dean
Wilkie, and golden voiced Guy Heilman led the assembly in America.
New Member Cori Badgley was our
invocator; she spoke of a seminal moment in her life,
a mission trip to
the Dominican
Republic. The
people were very
poor, the living
conditions primitive, yet the people were happy. When
Cori gets down she remembers those
people and finds gratitude in what she
has. Cori ended the invocation with
this quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson:
―To laugh often and love
much; to win the respect of
intelligent persons and the
affection of children; to earn
the approbation of honest
citizens and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the
best in others; to give of one's
self; to leave the world a bit
better, whether by a healthy
child, a garden patch or a
redeemed social condition; to
have played and laughed with
enthusiasm and sung with
exultation; to know even one
life has breathed easier because you have lived - this is
to have succeeded."
Thank You, Cori.

Speaker—Aaron Harlan
Bob Willet, Jr. introduced our
guest speaker, Aaron Harlan.
Aaron is owner of American Pacific Reverse Mortgage Group.

Basic Features of a Reverse
Mortgage:
All reverse mortgages—whether the government-insured Home Equity Conversion
Mortgage or a conventional product—share
a set of common characteristics, which include the following:
 You must be at least 62 years old and
own a home.
 You ALWAYS retain title (ownership)
to the home. The lender never, at any
point, owns the home, even after you
(or last surviving
spouse) permanently
vacate the
property.
 You must still
pay property
taxes and insurance, and keep the home
well maintained.
 Repayment of the loan occurs when
you (or last surviving spouse) permanently vacate the home. You or your
heirs (estate) then must facilitate the
pay back of the loan using either private
funds or selling the home. After the
loan is repaid, all leftover proceeds
from the sale of the home go to you or
the estate.
 The amount of funds you are eligible to
receive depends on your age (or age of
the youngest borrower in the case of
couples), the value of the home, the
interest rate and the upfront costs. With
all products, the older you are, the more
proceeds you are eligible to receive.
 Loan fees can be financed, or paid out
of the available loan proceeds. This
means you incur very little out-ofpocket expense to get a reverse mortgage. In most cases, you only have to
pay for the appraisal, which costs
roughly $350 depending on your market.
 The loan balance (amount owed) grows
each time you access funds from your

line of credit or receive a monthly
payment. In addition, the lender is
charging you interest on the outstanding loan balance as well as a
monthly servicing fee.
Repayment of the loan is not required until you (or the last surviving spouse) permanently leave the
home as a primary residence.
All reverse mortgages have a "nonrecourse" feature, which means that
the total amount owed can never
exceed the appraised value of the
home.
The history of wine spans thousands of
years and is closely intertwined with the
history of agriculture, cuisine, civilization and man himself. Archaeological
evidence suggests that the earliest wine
production came from sites in Georgia
and Iran, dating from 6000 to 5000 BC.
The archaeological evidence becomes
clearer, and points to domestication of
grapevine, in Early Bronze Age sites of
the Near East, Sumer and Egypt from
around the third millennium BC.
Evidence of the earliest European wine
production has been uncovered at archaeological sites in Greece, dated to
6,500 years ago. These same sites also
contain remnants of the world’s earliest
evidence of crushed grapes. In Egypt,
wine became a part of recorded history,
playing an important role in ancient
ceremonial life. Traces of wine dating
from the second and first millennium BC
have also been found in China.
Science Club
Bill McIntyre
shared his
thoughts on
the book by David Levy, Love and Sex
with Robots: The Evolution of Human-Robot Relationships.
The book’s title says it all, although Bill
had a lot more to say, including what
your robot might say to you sometime in
the future…‖Not tonight, darling, I’ve
got to reboot!‖
Hilarious to say the least!!!????

Spring Clean-Up
Spring Clean-Up: Dan Hall announced
that with the arrival of Earth Day it’s
once again time to come together and
pick up garbage on the American River
bike trail Saturday, April 19th, 9 am to
noon. Last year Point West Rotarians
distinguished themselves by picking up
more garbage than any other organization! Call or email Dan to sign up!

Golf Tournament—June 6th
Ole and Sven!
Gary Hardesty shared
that this year’s golf tournament will be bigger
and better than ever…
kind of like last year’s
but on steroids. We’ll
play at Turtle Creek in Roseville, and the fee is
the same as in past years, $110. What’s different is that we will be co-hosting the tournament
with Arden Arcade Rotary, and there will be
sponsorships, raffles, and a live auction, with
50% of the proceeds going to Children’s Receiving Home and 25% each to our two clubs. The
tournament is in honor of Sam Peterson, Arden
Arcade Rotary member and owner of the Sac
Brewing Company, who passed away last year.
Many of us did not know Sam but he was a big
sponsor of the PWR Brewfest. There’s even talk
of a friendly rivalry between the two clubs.
PWR has space for 18 foursomes, and signups
start in May.
Reverend Ole was the pastor of the local Norwegian Lutheran Church, and
Pastor Sven was the minister of the
Swedish Covenant Church across the
road.
I saw them yesterday standing by the
road, pounding a sign into the ground,
that reads :
'Da End iss Near! Turn Yourself
Aroundt Now! Before It's Too Late!'
As a car sped past them, the driver
leaned out his window and yelled,
'Leave us alone, you religious nuts!'
From the curve we heard screeching
tires and a big splash... Rev. Ole turns
to Pastor Sven and asks, 'Do ya tink
maybe da sign should yust say, 'Bridge
Out'?'

 Lou Fifer – Bloody Week:
Lou shared that despite his being out of
town last week PWR had a huge blood donation turnout with 35 pints donated. This puts Point West at 168, Downtown
at 117.
Every day, there are people who count on blood to be available to help save lives. Accident victims, premature babies, people undergoing cancer treatment, organ recipients, and many others
rely on the generosity of blood donors to ensure that blood is available when it's needed .
 Dan Hall announced that the spring’s first Eagle Golf outing was a huge success, with Dewana
Ljung’s golf lesson being one of the highlights. Eagle Golf every Tuesday night at Haggin Oaks,
