TRIBUTE TO
GENE AND
LENNY WEISS
The 18th “Chai” Maccabiah Games, the largest Jewish event in the world, are 3 months away and we will be
there! Chairman Ron Carner, the entire USA 18th Maccabiah Organizing Committee and our wonderful staff
have done an amazing job recruiting and assembling our Team and designing the innovative and exciting
programs that make the Maccabiah experience so exceptional. Toda, bravo and well done!
With a Team of almost 1000, a large Mission and many family members, friends and supporters attending
this incredible Jewish event, the huge American representation at the Games makes a strong statement of
our support for Israel, Jewish solidarity and Jewish pride.
Toni Wortman
President
The Maccabiah is a life-altering experience for athletes of all ages – truly the experience of a lifetime.
For some athletes, participation in these Games is the highlight of their athletic career, and for others, it is the fulfillment of a
lifelong dream. The Maccabiah is about excellence and achievement in sports. It’s about open doors and new possibilities,
teamwork, friendship and camaraderie. The Maccabiah is about creating a connection to the People and to the Land of Israel
and developing and enhancing feelings of Jewish identity, Jewish awareness and Jewish pride. The Maccabiah is a powerful
demonstration of the strength, vitality and unity of the Jewish People.
Together we will experience the emotional journey of the Maccabiah as we stand at the Western Wall, gaze at the Dead Sea
from atop Masada, and visit Yad Vashem. Together we will marvel at the pageantry of the Opening Ceremony, listen to the
cheers as we march into Ramat Gan Stadium and feel the joy of becoming a B’nai Mitzvah, some for the very first time.

18TH “CHAI” MACCABIAH GAMES
As I write these remarks Israel is engaged in fighting in the south. People from
around the country wonder how this will affect the Games this summer. In
order to avoid any confusion I want to state categorically, when the Games are
held, Team USA will be there!!!.
We have accomplished much within this past year. Team USA is the largest
ever with 996 members as of this writing. The outreach was huge, as evidenced
by the 2,500 applications we received.
Ron Carner
General Chairman
We have conducted well over 40 tryouts around the country; each one was
different and had its own special touches. Our goal is that each tryout is to contain Jewish content.
As a result we are participating in 28 sports and bringing 88 different teams to compete. WOW!!!
Yes, we want to compete on as high a level as possible, but we all know why we do what we
do. Maccabi USA’s Mission Statement uses the phrase “preserve and perpetuate” and that is why I
am still around for my sixth Maccabiah. This experience creates an indelible mark in the hearts
of our athletes. This is why I, and our dedicated group of volunteers, stay involved — the longlasting impact of the Games and the ties to Israel is what it’s all about.
In order to accomplish these goals we required an enormous effort by our Organizing Committee, backed up by our staff in
Philadelphia. Kol Hakavod (all the honor) to our athletes, our coaches, all our Team members and our wonderful volunteers for
making it happen. Thanks!!

On September 21, 2008, the Hawthorne Valley Country Club in Solon, OH,
was filled with warmth and love as friends and family provided testimonials
and shared memories of escapades with both Gene and Lenny – growing
up, as a parent, an uncle and as members of Maccabiah Wrestling Teams.
Both Gene and Lenny have been deeply involved with Maccabi
USA/Sports for Israel (MUSA) since the 1950’s, when Gene first participated
as an athlete at the 4th Maccabiah Games in Israel, through today, with both
men agreeing to serve as members of the MUSA Board of Directors
through December, 2010.
Gene and Lenny were both humbled by this opportunity and deeply
moved by the love and friendship they were shown. The Maccabiah gave
both men an ‘experience of a lifetime’ and they used this event to help
raise money to make it possible for other deserving athletes to have this
same, life-changing experience.

Together we will share the excitement of the competitions, the fun of
the parties and the satisfaction of performing an act of Tzedakah on a
Lev L’Lev visit. Together we will share the wonders of Israel, our Jewish
Homeland.
And after the competitions are over, the last medals have been awarded
and the Maccabiah Flame has been extinguished, we will return home with
new and enduring friendships, and with memories which will last forever.
We will return home as steadfast supporters of Israel and with a renewed
sense of Jewish pride.
To Team USA: By virtue of your hard work, determination and talent,
you have earned the privilege of representing the United States at the
18th Maccabiah Games. Enjoy every minute. Take advantage of every
opportunity. Compete with honor. Wear your red, white and blue uniforms with pride. We are proud of you!
This year in Jerusalem!
