Kathy Hosick celebrating 29 years with Pizza Hut
Kathy Hosick
Award Winning Service
Kathy Hosick is celebrating her 29th year with Pizza Hut in Cozad
this year. She began working at Pizza Hut in 1984 with Teri Spradlin
helping her land the position. Kathy started out as a waitress and fell
in love with the job. She quickly moved to shift before being offered
the manager position in 1988, just 4 years after her starting date.
Kathy babysat before taking the Pizza Hut position. She said she
actually hired several of the kids she used to babysit with when they
were old enough and now the children of those kids have held jobs at
Pizza Hut.
When asked what transformations have taken place at Pizza Hut
over the 29 years, Kathy felt that work ethic has one of the biggest
changes she has faced. A few years ago, standards for wearing gloves
while handling food was somewhat of an adjustment with the
different foods and food preparations that require gloves.
Another change that was surprising was the fact that the price of
pizza has dropped within the last 2 years. The larger pizzas are $2 less
than they were a couple of years ago. Some of the pizzas have stayed
the same but the name of the pizza has changed. For instance, the
Big Foot Pizza is now called Little Italy and Calzones are now Pzones
though the Pzones are larger than the Calzones were.
Kathy was very happy when they switched the 5 minutes personal
pan pizzas to the buffet. When the customer would order a personal pan, the waitress would place a timer set for 5
minutes on the table and they had that amount of time to prepare, bake and deliver the pizza to the table. The
buffet is much less stressful.
One new addition coming to Cozad’s Pizza Hut in the near future is Wingstreet. They will be serving 7 different
kinds of chicken wings with 7 different choice of sauces along with chicken salads.
6
The Pizza Hut in Cozad is part of a franchise out of Grand Island owned by
Ken and Dave Staab from Grand Island who also own Cozad’s Rodeway Inn.
“They are wonderful guys to work with,” said Kathy.
“Everyone thinks that I am the ‘boss’ but actually I have a boss out of
Grand Island.” Kathy shared with me. She has also had 4 coaches over the
years that help her manage the store, keep her on track with new products,
help her solve problems, and are in charge of the remodeling. The Grand
Island office handles the finances also.
The inside of Pizza Hut was updated 7 years ago and this summer Cozad’s
Pizza Hut is scheduled to receive a facelift on the outside. They will be
placing rock around the front as part of the facelift. The franchise will be
using their own contractors to do the facelift.
Kathy is very meticulous when it comes to meeting the standards expected
to pass inspections and also achieving excellence from her staff in customer
service and it shows by the awards she has achieved over the years. She has
earned awards in Outstanding Delivery Sales, Dedicated Service, Career
Achievements, and Best Demonstrated Practice.
Cozad Pizza Hut is inspected once a year by Corporate and also receives a safety inspection each year of which
they passed with flying colors due to Kathy’s meticulous cleaning and training of her staff. She is so tuned into
cleanliness that when she eats out of town at other restaurants, she visits the bathroom. If the bathroom is not
clean, it is a good sign that the food area most likely will not be handled in a safe and sanitary manner.
Kathy very much enjoys her customers whether they are regulars or visitors traveling through. She shared the
story of a traveler that claimed that Cozad’s Pizza Hut had a ghost haunting it called Tom. The ghost has become
a running joke among the employees and is blamed for many a mishap.
She has had a few strange encounters also. One couple came in to eat and claimed that a local church was paying
for their meal. After a phone call was made to the church, which had not offered to pay for the meal, a second
phone call was made to the Police Station.
Kathy is very passionate about children and education and she
reaches out to encourage reading by donating a personal pan pizza
to every child, K- 5th grade, who has qualified for the Book It
reading program. She has donated pizzas to the children every year
since 1984. The kids fondly call her the Pizza Lady.
Kathy is also very careful who she hires and that those working for
her strictly follow the standards for handling food and cleanliness.
If they fail, they are out the door quickly. She is very proud of her
workers and especially thankful for her dedicated dayshift crew
who has been wonderful workers for several years with Kathy at
Pizza Hut.
We are very fortunate to have such a wonderfully managed, clean and delicious Pizza Hut in Cozad. The food is
always wonderful and the employees are so friendly and personable. Many thanks to Kathy and her staff for their
dedication to Cozad and their customers, and for all the delicious pizzas, salads and pastas she has served to all of
us over the last 29 years!

“COZAD BUILDING GETS MAKEOVER”
Article & photos courtesy of Kearney Hub
Focus 2013 Hometown Issue (February 21, 2013)
By MALENA WARD Hub Regional Correspondent
COZAD — A formerly vacant
building in downtown Cozad
now serves dual purposes as an
office center and a call center.
Cozad Development Corp.,
which fosters business
development in Cozad,
purchased the building in
December 2011 and renovated it
to house several tenants. The
remodel included extensive
electrical work and installing
fiber optics with state-of-the-art
technological improvements accessible throughout the building.
The 11,000-square-foot building, once the site of Boerkircher’s Furniture and Floor Covering store, sat empty for 11⁄2
years before CDC put it to use.
As it was closing on the purchase, CDC discovered what seemed to be one large building was actually two buildings
that had been joined sometime, Robyn Geiser, CDC executive director, said. There was about 21⁄2 feet between the
buildings.
While the separate building was a surprise, it worked out fine because CDC envisioned remodeling each half to be
remodeled to accommodate different needs, she said. “We operate as two separate buildings,” Geiser said.
The west side, now 121 W. Ninth St., became an office center with
seven offices, an 800-square-foot meeting room and separategender ADA compliant restrooms. Every wall was insulated to
ensure that there is privacy within each office and between the two
buildings.
Only one office is vacant. It was left open for flexibility and in case
the space is needed. The hallway from the west entrance leads to a
comfortable seating or reception area. The primary décor color is
gray with accents of red, white and black in keeping with Cozad’s
school colors. “We felt like it represented our community well,”
Geiser said. “We were looking for a timeless appeal. The whole
premise behind this building is it, hopefully, will serve our business community.”
CDC plans to offer ongoing education in the facility by taking advantage of fiber-optic technology and Internet
capacity. The site has been used by the Dawson Area Development leadership class and for a business plan writing
class. This month, there will be a customer service class, and in March a class on integrating social media.
Geiser said CDC believes in collaboration so classes are welcoming of anyone. Participants aren’t limited to Cozad.
Businesses can also rent the space to conduct a meeting or staff training.
The east side of the building, now 115 W. Ninth St., was designed as a call center capacity of having 75 call stations.
CCB LLC, an in-bound call center, began training agents to work at the facility in September. It is the second in-bound
call center for CCB.
There currently are 50 units with room for 25 more as the business grows. At full capacity, operating 24 hours a day, it
could create 150 jobs. It also has training space, a break room, storeroom and a set of restrooms.
10
It made sense to do that work all at once,” Geiser said
of finishing off the entire space, “so when they are
busy doing their jobs, they won’t be disturbed by
construction.” A key factor in the site selection was
the fiber expansion of Cozad Telephone Co. and its
capacity and expertise, Geiser said. The building site
and availability of qualified labor also were factors.
“We chose Cozad based on the collaboration between
CDC, Workforce Development and Cozad Telephone
Co. They all have exceeded our expectations by
fulfilling our needs and answering our questions even
before we asked them,” said Phil Caparso, managing
member of CCB.
“We are particularly pleased with how the Workforce
Development office was able to address our
employment needs and navigate us through the process. In addition, CDC was able to meet our facility
requirements that allowed us to start up with minimal retrofit.”
Geiser said CCB has a contract with the U.S. State Department in handling calls for people applying for visas.
The call center receives calls from around the world, and a bilingual labor force has been a plus.
Geiser said when the project began, organizers knew there was a need for office space and a training room.
“We knew we were filling a need,” she said.
Funding for the project came from a $225,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture grant awarded to the city of
Cozad that, in turn, was lent to CDC for 10 years at no interest and from a $150,000 Community development
Block Grant, also at zero-percent interest.
“When you have a big, vacant building, you want to fill it again,” Geiser said. “This melded a lot of our goals
and our objectives and met the needs of the community.”
She said people were scared when Tenneco closed, but reacting by doing downtown revitalization made sense
because businesses invested in themselves.
“We’ve made a great stride to show our commitment as a community, not only to those who live here, but to
others, too,” she said.
Many thanks to Malena Ward and Kearney Hub for the publication of this wonderful article in the Focus 2013 Hometown
Issue.

Are you having Cabin Fever yet with all this snow we got? If so please stop by our Center and enjoy what we have right here in

socialize. Our Pool Tournament Winners in February were 1st Place, Al Blumanhourst- 2nd Place Bill Stevens and 3rd Place Ernie
Frazier.
On Monday April 4th White Hearing Aid will be here at the Center at 10 PM. We are pleased they use our center as an outlet of
their clinics all around the state of Nebraska. On Tuesday, March 5th and Thursday, March 14th starting at 1 PM Central Plains
Home Health will be here for to pamper your feet. If this is something you would be interested in please give me a call asap as
their Foot clinics fill up fast.
Every Thursday we get together for Friendly Coffee at 10AM, we generally have coffee and rolls and enjoy each other’s company.
Please stop in and join us.
On Friday, March 8th after lunch, we will be making Noodles to have available to sell for our Spring Festival. We need 15 – 18
people to help us out on this. It usually only takes a couple of hours, and the more help we have the faster it gets done. If you
would like to volunteer for this please do. I would like to thank the volunteers that have did it in the past because without them
this would not get accomplished.
On Tuesday, March 12th at 11 AM, I am excited to announce Jeremy Palensky of Edward Jones will be here to discuss Retirement
Planning on building your Investment Income. Please plan on being here as Jeremy is very informative and has allot of great
ideas.
On Thursday, March 14th, we have scheduled our Evening meal which starts at 5:00PM this includes our Oven Baked Chicken
Dinner. We will also have our Bake Sale from 1 PM - 7 PM that day also. Our bake sale consists of all our Fresh breads made
daily and Caramel Rolls and donated items from friends of the Center. With the bad Weather in February we had to cancel but
we did not waste the chicken we sold 40 boxes of take out. Thank you to all who helped out on this! Our Homemade Breads &
Caramel Rolls have been a huge success and I would encourage everyone to give us a try, Annie Silbermann is our baker and she
has been baking up a storm. If you are entertaining guests at your home or maybe you just want to treat yourself or your
employees to her delicious breads or rolls, stop in or call and we will take care of it.
On Friday, March 22nd we have Janet King scheduled for our Dance night which starts at 7pm. Please bring a finger food along
with $ 5.00 to dance to some great music.
On Saturday, March 23rd we will be hosting a Spring Fling Vendor & Craft Festival from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. We will have our
Kitchen open at 11:00AM – 1:00AM for lunch. Please stop by and enjoy the show. I have high expectations that this will be
show you won't want to miss out on. If you would be interested in showcasing your products call me soon as we will fill up fast.
For more information you can call Tamie at 784-2747.
I would like to emphasize on our Meals on Wheels program as this is a vital need in our community. If you know of anyone that
can use this program please contact us. We have great volunteers that go out every day Monday through Friday to make sure
they receive a well balanced meal. If you already get Meals on Wheels please call us before 9:00 AM if you will not be home, as
our volunteers take time out of their day to bring it out to you. Also a reminder, we do loan out durable medical equipment such
as walkers, wheel chairs and bath chairs at no cost.
Commodities can be picked up at the Center on April 1st from 8:00 AM – 10:00AM. If you have questions regarding the
commodity supplement food program, please phone them in Kearney at 308-865-5683.
The Center is always in need of paper products like small or large plates, napkins, cups & bowls. We are also in need of 5# Gold
Medal Flour to make our noodles and we always need Coffee. Our Copier has been a nightmare and we are in desperate need for
a new one. If you would like to help us out on purchasing one we would genuinely appreciate it. I have been printing off our
newsletter at home and thanks to Brad Staton for also helping me out on this at his office. We are also still looking for a used
Computer that has been needed for the last 5 months.
I would like to thank everyone who has donated or given your time to our Center as we are a nonprofit entity and we appreciate
all that you do for you to keep your Community Center open! I wish you all a Happy Easter!
