Peg and Enid knew they had to do something, but they didn’t know what. “We just
wanted to get help for the people we were
serving that were in such a bad situation,”
said Peg in a recent interview. Not knowing
how to start, they started sharing their
dream with others. Death affects everyone,
and before long they had gathered a number
of dedicated and knowledgeable individuals
to help them.

Do you ever take the time to give thanks for
the blessings in your life? Are you grateful
for the sunshine, a smile from a friend, a
warm home, a hug from a child? What if
every time you were thankful for something
you made a commitment to give back by
putting a small donation in special box? Well
in many ways that is how Hospice Friends
first got it start.

Have you ever said, “When I die I don’t want
to be in pain, alone, or in a hospital, hooked up
to machines?” Hospice is an option that allows you to do just that – spend the last
hours, days, and even months of your life free
of pain, at home surrounded by your loved
ones. In Kittitas County, hospice services are
provided by two partner organizations, Kittitas
Valley Home Health & Hospice (a department
of KVCH) and Hospice Friends. The two organizations work very closely together to provide a full spectrum of hospice services for
individuals and families facing end of life. Just
like Dame Cicely Saunders, the founder of the
first modern hospice, we believe that “You
matter to the last moment of your life, and we
will do all we can not only to help you die
peacefully, but live until you die.”
If we have learned anything about end-of-life
over the past 20 years of offering hospice services to the people of Kittitas County, it would
be that it takes a community to care for a
loved one at end-of-life. Not many families
realize the physical and emotional toll that
comes with caring for someone at end-of-life.
Barb McGrew, who lost her mother LaVerne
Noyes last fall, writes, “We are six months
from her passing, and we are beginning to finally heal. Physically the toll was more than I
ever could imagine. We were running on pure
adrenaline alone for three months, and never
felt the exhaustion. Thank God for LaRenne,
Polly and the staff for holding us in their caring
arms and for the excellent advice before and
after Mom’s death.” Hospice applies a team
approach to caring for your loved one. The
team includes family members, friends, nurses,
social workers, physicians, bathing aids, physical therapists, respiratory technicians, and last,
but not least, volunteers.
Volunteers play a unique role on the hospice
team and provide support, not only for the
individual at end-of-life, but also for the family.
Volunteers provide a wide variety of services:
respite for a family member, companionship,
music therapy, basic chores, massage, reiki,
and transportation. Some families are very
independent and feel that they need to handle
everything themselves. While we always reRIEF

every need. Families need to view the support
a volunteer can give in much the same manner.
Although the race may be yours to run, you
cannot do it without the support of a team
that will care for you every step of the way.
If you, or someone you know, has a terminal
illness and is trying to run the race alone,
we encourage reaching out and asking for
the support you need. Or if you are interested in volunteering to help others run
the race, then we encourage you to contact us so that we can let you know how
you can help. Volunteering with hospice
can be a life changing experience. In the
words of Enid Gage, co-founder of Hospice Friends, “You will always receive
more than you give…I know that I have
laughed with more dying people than I
have with healthy people”.
Giving Thanks Continued...
At this point Peg and Enid had the vision, passion, and knowledge to make Hospice Friends
a reality, but they still lacked the means.
Without a budget they knew they only would
be able to scratch the surface of what was
needed to serve people at end of life. When
Enid, a member of the Episcopal Church, was
discussing the concept of Hospice Friends to
the minister at the time, Nolan Redman, he
suggested that they try for a grant from the
United Thank Offering (UTO). The UTO is a
110-year-old program based on the concept of
giving back to the community for the blessings
you receive in your own life. Twice a year
everyone brings their blue boxes to the church
to be collected. The thank offerings are then used to support a
wide variety of church and community projects in the local diocese.
When they applied for the grant
from the United Thank Offering,
Hospice Friends was told that
they should not expect anything.
They were elated when they
received word that the church
decided to give the full United
Thank Offering for that year, an
amount of $10,000, to Hospice
Friends. With this funding Enid
and Peg were able to take the
organization to the next level. In late 1983
Hospice Friends was able to hire its first parttime director. To think that Hospice Friends
got its start from thousands of people across
Washington and Idaho putting coins in a small
donation box every time they were thankful is
truly inspiring. Can there be a more appropriate start to a volunteer-based hospice organization?
In 2005 Hospice Friends still operates on the
same guiding principles that were first established in 1983. In coordination with Kittitas
Valley Home Health & Hospice they are still
providing the support individuals and families
need at end of life. Barbara McGrew who lost
her mother LaVerne Noyes last fall writes, “I
cannot put into words the profound gratitude I
have for Hospice and Hospice Friends… I
think of the words ‘new life’ as it becomes a
new life when members of the family pass
away. New relationships form, and after the
grieving, the air smells fresher, quality time
with loved ones is more important, and we
take far better care of enjoying today – taking
care of ourselves and others. It is an amazing
experience.” Barbara’s words represent the
dream the Peg and Enid set out to achieve
over 23 years ago: to provide families with the
support they need to make one of the most
difficult times of their lives an “amazing experience.”
Giving Thanks Today…
As Hospice Friends continues to grow and
expand services, we are still motivated by the
same dreams that captivated Peg and Enid, but
we are finding new ways for those dreams to
come alive. Last year staff, volunteers, and
board members worked diligently to complete
a three-year strategic plan. It lists nine different goals ranging from improving patient comfort to providing spiritual care for families.
One of the first goals we hope to accomplish
this year is to explore the possibility of establishing a hospice care center in Kittitas County.
To this end we have contracted with the
Washington State Hospice & Palliative Care
Organization (WSHPCO) to conduct the

feasibility study. A hospice care center is a
place for hospice patients to stay when their
symptoms make staying in the home difficult
for the patient and/or family. The center
would offer a similar level of care found in a
hospital or skilled nursing facility, but in a
home-like setting. Our first meeting with
WSHPCO will be on April 18th. We also will
be conducting a series of strategic planning
sessions over the course of the next few
months focusing on how to improve bereavement services in the county. We know that
there are many people in the community that
are grieving the loss of a loved one, but they
have no where to turn for support and comfort. If you are interested in either one of
these topics please contact the Hospice
Friends office for more information.
Although Peg and Enid would be the first to
acknowledge that it took a team of dedicated,
knowledgeable, and passionate individuals to
make Hospice Friends a reality, Enid commented that, “We didn’t know what to really
expect, we just wanted to fill a void…and I
guess that’s what it took to get this thing off
the ground – two ornery old ladies with minds
of their own.” Truer words have not been
spoken. The community has Peg and Enid to
thank for having the passion and vision to
make their dream become a reality in the form
of Hospice Friends. In order to keep their
dream alive and meet the growing demand for
services, Hospice Friends needs your continued support. In a recent interview Enid stated
that one “can’t put a price on caring, and caring is what Hospice Friends is all about.” For
that reason, Hospice Friends has never
charged for any of its services and with your
continued support we never will.

Over 23 years ago when Hospice Friends got
its start we were working out of a closet at
KVCH (literally!). We invite
you to attend our open
house on April 20th from 5-7
pm and see first hand that
we have come a long way
since that time. Having outgrown the previous facility
years ago, Kittitas Valley
Home Health & Hospice
made the decision last fall to
move to a larger facility. At
one point, shortly before the
move, there were four people sharing a single desk the
size of end table. Needless to say we did not
shed any tears when, on February 9th, we

moved into a new space located at 401 E. Mt.
View Suite #3. Because of the close working
relationship between the two organizations,
KVHH&H carved out a space at the new
location for Hospice Friends. The new
location provides us with over twice as
much space. We now have a conference
room, private room to meet with clients,
and a “real” waiting room that has been
graciously furnished and decorated in part
by generous donations from Cashmere
Valley Bank and Affordable Funeral Care.
The open house will be in coordination
with the Chamber of Commerce’s After
Hour’s event, so you can expect an excellent selection of appetizers and wine.
We look forward to giving you a tour of our
new facility on April 20th – please join us.
Cruisin’ for Hospice Car Show
The 7th Annual Cruisin’ For
Hospice Car Show will be at
a new location this year –
the 300 block of North Pine
Street in Ellensburg. Gene
Ketzenberg, volunteer organizer of the event, is excited about having a downtown venue for the event. It
will allow people to come to the car show and
explore the downtown core and see what else
Ellensburg has to offer. As in years past, the
car show is guaranteed be a fun event for everyone. There will be music, raffles, games, and
prizes for all ages. All
prizes have been donated
by local businesses who,
according to Gene, “really
make the show what it is.”
The show will be open to
any type of car, from antique or classics to the
latest models, even motorcycles and pickups. All proceeds from the
event will go to Hospice Friends. Registration
will be allowed the day of the show, but please
contact the Hospice Friends office if you
would like to pre-register your vehicle(s).
Caregiving Workshop
We invite you to attend a free workshop on
Friday, May 19th for families, friends, and others who provide support for people who have
disabilities, are frail, and/or are elderly. Both
paid and unpaid caregivers are encouraged to
attend. This workshop, sponsored by Aging &
Long Term Care, WSU Extension office, Affordable Funeral Care, and Hospice Friends,
will give you some basic resources to help in
caring for a loved one. The keynote speaker
will be Susan McCurry, PhD, from the University of Washington discussing dementia issues
and how to become a resilient caregiver.
There also will also be some wonderful door
prizes: free massages, movie tickets, car
washes, and much more. The Cle Elum session
will be at the Upper County Senior Center
(719 E. 3rd St.) from 9:00 am-12:00 pm
(registration at 8:30 am), and the Ellensburg
session will be at St. Andrew’s Catholic
Church (401 S. Willow St.) from 1:00 pm-4:00
pm (registration at 12:30 pm). Although the
workshop is free, please register by May 12th
for either workshop by contacting WSU Extension at 962-7507 or 674-2584 ext. 507.

“Your organization has helped me so much during mom’s dying and afterward. Frequently your notes and
information would come just as I was wondering why I was feeling a certain way. What a blessing you all are.”
- Family member touched by Hospice Friends and Kittitas Valley Home Health & Hospice
“Thank you for your support and dedication to the terminally ill. It is such a noble cause. We could not have

Hospice Friends is a non-profit charitable organization
that provides peace, comfort, and care to the frail elderly
and anyone facing a life-threatening illness in Kittitas
County. We work in coordination with Kittitas Valley
Home Health & Hospice, a department of Kittitas
Valley Community Hospital, to provide quality care in the
home, nursing home, or hospital in a professional,
empathetic, and confidential manner. Hospice Friends
promotes a caring community without affiliation to any
specific religious orientation or political view.
All of our services are free of charge.
