ECA PLAYER RELEASE ANALYSIS EURO 2012 POLAND & UKRAINE
Foreword
The UEFA Euro 2012™ is the most important international football competition in Europe. It is
organised by the Union Européenne de Football Association (UEFA) and the first edition was held in
1960. The 14th edition is hosted in Poland and Ukraine from the 8th of June to the 1st of July 2012.
For the UEFA Euro 2012™, all clubs have to release their players for the tournament according
to the FIFA regulations: in accordance with Annexe 1 to the FIFA Regulations on the Status and
Transfer of Players, “if a player is called up, he must be released to play in the final competition
organised by FIFA or a confederation and held in a period fixed/set in the calendar. In this event, the
period of release shall be 14 days.”
Following fruitful talks held in spring 2012 between the European Club Association (ECA) and UEFA,
which ended in the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding in March 2012, the UEFA
Executive Committee has decided to allocate an amount of €100 million from the benefits
of the the UEFA Euro 2012TM to clubs (compared to €43’466’390 for Euro 2008). A part of this
€100 million will be distributed amongst those clubs who released players for the UEFA Euro
2012™. Moreover, any club whose player(s) appeared on the match sheet of a UEFA Euro 2012™
qualification game will receive a fixed amount. The exact figures will be officialised during the UEFA
Executive Committee meeting on the 30th of June 2012.
The purpose of this research is to show the overall situation of players released by European clubs
with a focus on ECA Members. The research is based on the official UEFA Squad Lists
published on the 29th of May 2012 (with ulterior replacements due to injury before the start
of the tournament).
