DOWLING CATHOLIC
Amen
Guide us and inspire us to be Leaders for Life who are
Centered on Christ.
We pray for wisdom and inspiration to prepare us for the
task ahead. Guide us in making our vision for the future a
reality. Lord, send us your spirit to guide us as we seek ways
to strengthen the mission of Dowling Catholic High School.
As members of the Dowling Catholic Community, ‘We
stand on the shoulders of those who came before us.’ We are
grateful for their faith, their vision, and their philanthropy.
Now we are called to provide the shoulders for those who will
follow us.

Dowling Catholic High School
The alumni being inducted today are an elite group of individuals who embody the work ethic and
sportsmanship that is expected of every Dowling Catholic student, athlete, and coach. We honor
those accomplishments today -- they will not be forgotten.
ƒ Excellence in DCHS/SJA Athletics
ƒ Athletic coaching excellence at DCHS/SJA
ƒ Excellence in athletics, coaching, or related area at the college, amateur, or
professional level
The task of selecting inductees to the Hall of Fame is difficult indeed, given the large number of
talented athletes and coaches who are nominated each year. The selection committee, comprised
of both past and present alumni and staff, reviewed the credentials of dozens of nominees over
the past several years. Selection of nominees is based on one or a combination of the following
criteria:
Today, we honor six individuals who will join 153 current members who have earned a permanent
place in the rich history of Dowling Catholic and St. Joseph Academy Athletics.
Turner received an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from
Drake University in 1983. He received an Honorary Doctor
of Business Administration in Foodservice Management
from Johnson & Wales University in 1991.
In 1990, the editors of Advertising Age magazine named
him “Ad Man of the Decade” for the 1980’s. He also
received the Horatio Alger Award in 1991.
Since 1995, The Dowling Catholic High School/St. Joseph Academy Athletic Hall of Fame has
recognized those who have helped make our athletic program strong. Perhaps more importantly,
they give our current and future students examples to live by and an added incentive to always
strive to be their best.
Turner originally planned to be a McDonald’s franchisee,
but instead became one of the first employees of
McDonald’s Corporation in 1956.
Fred L. Turner is Honorary Chairman of McDonald’s
Corporation and is also a life trustee of Ronald McDonald
House Charities. He retired in January 2004 as Senior
Chairman and member of the Board of Directors of
McDonald’s Corporation.
ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME
Distinction in their professional life
Distinction in service to their community

Commitment to the Dowling/SJA community
Fred L. Turner `51
2011 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI RECIPIENT
He was elected CEO in 1973. In January 1977, Turner
became Chairman and CEO, and was elevated to Senior
Chairman in March 1990.
