Rogers Hometown Hockey
Written By: Nikkia M. Wanderingspirit
The Rogers Hometown Hockey crew came to St Patrick’s Community School on October
31, 2014 from 2:00pm-3:00pm. This event was part of the Rogers Hometown Hockey
Tour that is happening all over Canada during this hockey season. We were very lucky that
our school was selected as one of the stops of a Hometown visit. The special guests that
came to our school included our Red Deer Mayor Tera Veer, former NHL hockey player,
Jamie Macoun, who played for the Calgary Flames, and the Edmonton Oilers cheerleaders.
The cheerleaders presented the cheer that they perform at the Edmonton Oilers games
and also handed out t-shirts. St. Pat's students were dressed up in their favorite hockey
jerseys, and students had made signs for the favorite teams. We all cheered and clapped to
show our support for this special event. Members of St. Pat's Hockey Academy had the
opportunity to share their hockey stories with the rest of the school, and they also asked
quesitons of Jamie Macoun.
On November 1, Ron Maclean was also in Red Deer to host the pre-game show for the
Sports Net Mobile Broadcast Event. The big event took place downtown in Red Deer and
included numerous interactive activities and included 'Meet and Greets' with NHL alumni,
local hockey heroes, and celebrities. We were so happy to host the Roger Hometown Hockey
at St. Patrick’s School. Thank you, Mr. Cote, for organizing this awesome event!

Senior Girls VolleyballTeam
Written By: Ana Vasquez
Though the members of the Senior Girls volleyball team got off with a
slow start to the season, they worked together to show lots of improvement
throughout the three month season. All team members worked hard to
come together as a team, and ended the season with a number of
impressive wins.
They spent most of their weeks dedicated to volleyball as they had
practices on Mondays after school, games on Tuesdays and Wednesdays,
and morning practices on Thursdays. The girls placed 3rd at the RDCRD
tournament at the beginning of the season.
Good job to all the girls and let’s hope they kick some butt at the Pep
Rally!
Whittecotton's Boys
Written By: Haley Fowler
On October 28th, I interviewed Mr. Whitecotton about the senior boys
volleyball team and how they are doing this season. The volleyball season,
which ended this week, was filled with highs and lows.
Mr. Whitecotton explained that the season started at the beginning of
September with a RDC tournament at Notre Dame. Although the team
didn’t win any games, the boys improved a lot and have come a long way
throughout the volleyball season.
I asked Mr. Whitecotton if it was difficult for him to get up in the
morning for early practices. To this, he said, “Yes, we do have morning
practice and I have to be on the road by 5:30am, because I live an hour out
of town.”
Continuing on, I asked the Sr. Boys coach, “If you could pick one person
from your team who could score a point on you who, would you pick?”
Whitecotton, of course, laughed and said, “No one could beat me. But if
one person who could get a point on me would be Reginald De Leon.”
Finally, I asked Whitecotton if the thought that the Sr. Boys would will
beat the teachers in the pep rally.
“Absolutely not!” he answered. “Now that Mr. Slubik has left, we have a
chance!”

Ebola Crisis
Written By: Allyssa Dantis
In the early part of 2014, the first victim of
what scientists are calling the 2014 Ebola virus
outbreak, died in West Africa- the first in his
family, and the first of thousands of people. As of
October 25th 2014, 13,703 suspected cases had
been recorded, and 4,922 deaths have been
detected and reported to government
authorities.
There had been some cases outside of Africa,
and of these cases, four people have died because
of this horrible disease. In early October, a Spanish
nurse had died after taking care of a priest who
had just returned from West Africa.
According to CDC, Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention, the Ebola virus is not transmitted
through the air. You can only contract the disease
if you have had direct contact with the blood or
body fluids of a person who is sick with Ebola.
To prevent the spread of disease, it is
recommended that people disinfect highly used
surfaces, and wash your hands often.
As of now there is no vaccine or cure for Ebola
although a few possible drugs are rumored to be
tested but infected people can recover.
I think it’s time to stop being scared about
Ebola, but we should focus on how Canadians can
help those who are suffering from the Ebola
outbreak overseas.
Justin Bieber Caught
Kicking a Soccer Ball
in the Vatican
Written By: Hayden McCallum
Earlier in October, Canadian pop star Justin
Bieber took a trip to Rome. On his trip, he
decided to take an after-hours private tour of the
Vatican- where the Pope lives. During his
private tour, Vatican staff scolded Bieber for
kicking around a soccer ball in the hallways of
the historic buildings.
My opinion on this situation is that this
should not have happened. Justin Bieber should
definitely not have been kicking around a soccer
ball in a holy place.
However, at the same time, I think that it is
the Vatican staff’s fault for letting Bieber in
while he has a soccer ball. They should just not
have let Bieber in on the tour with a soccer ball.
So there is a reason to be disappointed about
this situation, but at the same time, if you aren’t
told to NOT do something, why wouldn’t you do
it?

Transformers:Age of ExtinctionMovie Review
Written By: Ricardo Martinez
“Transformers” is a science fiction action movie directed by Michael Bay. This is now the fourth movie in the film
series. The story begins with the humans hunting down all Transformers, including auto-bots, with the help of the
Transformer bounty hunter lockdown. However, their primary target is Optimus Prime. In Texas, an inventor
named Cade Yeager buys an old truck to take it apart. Cade discovers that the old truck is Optimus Prime and
decides to repair him. The government wants the Transformers dead, and they begin to hunt them, trying to
eliminate all Transformers. This movie is packed with action, explosions, and fighting as the Transformers try to
survive.
In my opinion, the movie wasn’t very good because they changed all the cast from the other films. Also, I
think the movie was way too long and could have ended earlier and viewers would still get the point. Even though I
didn’t like it as much as the other Transformers films, I still think all the effects were pretty good and Transformers
fans would really enjoy this movie.
Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire
Written By: Damian Stewart
Two games, “Pokémon Omega Ruby” and “Alpha Sapphire,” is to be released worldwide on November 21,
2014. The game has new additions which include new functionality that improves the way that you traverse the
region of Hoenn, and adds new megas (enhanced forms of your Pokémon for a limited time) for your favorite
Pokémon. The most obvious additions to the new games is the new 3D layout and the addition of Mega
Pokémon.
● The new 3D layout was added in Pokémon X and Y, last year’s games, so of course Nintendo would bring it
back for the most anticipated remake.
● Mega evolution is another level of evolution that requires the trainer to have the Mega Ring and the
Pokémon to be holding a Mega Stone. This was also first introduced in X and Y. A Mega Ring allows the player
to activate the mega evolution while a Mega Stone allows the Pokémon to become the mega evolution.
Other changes include Groudon and Kyorge, the two legendary Pokémon, who now have primal forms. I don’t
know a lot about the difference between primal and mega forms, so we will just have to wait and see what the
differences are when the games come out.
Another large change is the new list of megas. I’m not going to name any here (because there are too many to
mention), but it seems that players will now be able to mega evolve any Pokémon they wish. People are most
excited for the mega Rayquaza, and I admit, I am too. The mega Rayquaza is another legendary Pokémon that
you can only get once in the game, so it is very rare and powerful.
The price of both of these games are $ 39.99.
My opinion of both games is that you should get the new games if you’re a very large fan of Pokémon,
because they are great games to play on the go. People who have played Pokémon from 2003 will remember the
original games, “Ruby” and “Sapphire,” because I sure remember grabbing my brother’s Gameboy and playing
them. If you are an Omega Pokémon fan (Get it? Omega? Because it’s Pokémon Omega Ruby?) then you should
get these games. I look forward to playing these games and exploring the region of Hoenn again.

Super Smash Brothers
Written By: Octavio Garcia
“Super Smash Bros” is a fighting video game developed by Sora Ltd. and Bandai Namco Games
and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U video game consoles. The game is very
good for a lot a people that want to enjoy time with their families and friends playing video games.
The game will be released on November 21, 2014 and there will be a special announcement before the
game comes out. The creator of “Super Smash Bros,” Masahiro Sakurai, is a person I respect a lot. I
think that he is really creative and I love playing other “Mario’ games. The basic characters of the
game are Mario, Link from “The Legends of Zelda,” Pikachu and Donky Kong.
Unfortunately, this amazing game is only going to be available on the Wii U. Speaking about
controllers, now for the first time in history, Nintendo is making a connection object that attaches to
the Wii U and even the GameCube controller. It’s amazing and I’ve always loved using the GameCube
controller when I play Super Smash Bros. I consider this game good for people that want to have a
good time playing video games with family and friends and it’s worth the money to own one for
yourself!
"Identical"Book Review
Written By: Teresa Hernandez
If you tend to like realistic stories, than this book is the perfect one for
you. However, this book should not be read be a young audience.
“Identical,” a novel by Ellen Hopkins is better suited for more mature and
older students. It deals with more mature topics like relationships and abuse,
so I wouldn’t recommend it for student in grade 6 or 7. The story takes
place in the present day, though it jumps back and forth through time at
some points. Overall, the writing the author used is sometimes cliché but is
narrated in a way a teen will be able to understand.
“Identical” is the story of 16 year old identical twins, Raenne and
Kaeleigh, who are the daughters of a district court judge named Raymond
and a Politian mother named Kay. Kaeleigh is the main focus of her father’s
misplaced attention. Raenne is screaming for her father’s attention but when
she is not able to obtain it, she resorts to drugs and boys.
In my opinion, this book is one of the most shocking and bizarre stories I
have ever read. It deals with things that happen in everyday life, although it
may not be exactly relatable for everyone. I would recommend this book for
people who like to read a somewhat cliché but well written story.

"Five Nights at Freddy's"
By: Damian Stewart
The game “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is a point and
click horror game. It was created by Scott Cawthon, and
was released on 'Steam,' an online game store, on August
20th, 2014.
The point of the game is to survive for five nights at
Freddy Fazbears Pizza Restaurant, while the four
murderous animatronics hunt you down, and try to stuff
you into a bear suit. The player must last from midnight
to 6:00 am, approximately 5-8 minutes in real time. You
are able to monitor the animatronics by using the security
cameras. And if the power goes out you are left in a dark
room, hoping that Freddy will take his time killing you.
The price of the game is only $4.99
Scott Cawthon has also released a trailer for “Five
Nights at Freddy’s 2”, thought nothing is known about
this new game at this point. There are, however, a few
theories about a few new things. For example, there will
now be 8 animatronics roaming around the facility- 4 of
them are the original and the other 4 are the new.
Another theory talks about the use of the bear mask,
by saying with the bear mask up, the old animatronics
will attack you, but the new ones won’t. But with the
mask down the old ones won’t attack you and the new
ones will. These are just theories but if they are true, I’ll
be very excited.
My opinion on “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is that it’s a
very amazing game. I am a proud to say I own this game
on my iOS and it is 100% worth it, but only if you are
ready for a good scare. It is spooky, and if you are bad
with jump scares (when something suddenly pops up on
your screen and screams loudly), then you might let out a
few girly screams for the first few times playing!
"Wild Girl"
Written By: Shayna Pfeifer
“Wild Girl” is a fictional book. It is
about a girl named Lidie and she lives in
Brazil. Her mom died so she alone with her
brother and father and the family decided to
move to New York, where Lidie takes up
the hobby of riding horses.
The author of this novel is Patrica Reilly
Giff, and she is the author of many beloved
books for children. “Wild Girl” reminds me
of when my friend, Cati was riding as horse,
as she is the best rider I have seen. I would
have liked this book better if it didn’t end on
a cliffhanger.
It took me a couple weeks to read
because it is 145 pages long and 31
chapters. If you are really good with names
then you will be really good reading this
book because a lot of different characters
are constantly introduced.
My favorite part of the book is at the end
when Lidie woke up at 4:30am and just
hoped on Wild Girl, her horse, and just
went and did not hold her back. One more
reason you should read this is
if you like drama and or
horses. My friend Traci
also read this book, and she
thought it was a good book
though she also thought it
was bad that the novel
ended on a cliff hanger.

The Warrior Heir Book Review
Written By: Loreanne Papasin
I’m going to start off by saying that books DO NOT suck. They are the world outside your world,
when you get bored of daydreaming. Personally, I love reading fantasy, science fiction, romance, and
action and adventure. That’s how I got interested in reading this set of books called “The Heir Series.” My book review
is about the first book, “The Warrior Heir.”
“The Warrior Heir” is a novel written by author Cinda Williams Chima and was published in late 2006. The story is
about a 16-year-old boy named Jack Downey-Swift, who discovers that his aunt Linda, his mother Becka’s sister, has
kept his true identity a secret from him and his mom- he’s a wizard/warrior. He and his divorced mom have lived in
Trinity, Ohio for a majority of Jack’s life, where he goes to soccer practice after school and ends up blowing his
competition away- literally. Scared and confused, Jack keeps it a secret from his mom. Well, until it starts to get out of
control and his Aunt Linda finds out that his powers have greatly manifested themselves on an out-of-town road trip
with Jack’s friends Will and Fitch to his great-grandmother’s grave- where they’re attacked by two men who Jack
swears he’s never seen before in his life.
After Linda, Jack, Will, and Fitch get back to Trinity safely, Jack demands answers to the truth from his aunt about
what happened and why they had to retrieve a magical sword that was sheathed in a box and hidden ‘safely’ under his
bed. During this conversation, the truth is revealed from Linda that Jack was born a wizard- a Weir with magical powers
that control anything they set their mind to. The only problem was that he born without his Weirstone- a magic stone
behind his heart that gives Jack his wizard abilities and keeps the Weir alive. Desperate for a way to keep her nephew
alive, Linda reveals that she pleads for help from a heart surgeon by the name of Jessamine Longbranch, who also
happens to be an Anaweir- someone who possesses a Weirstone and receives magical abilities from it. Instead, Dr.
Longbranch goes behind Linda's back and surgically places a Warrior stone in Jack when he was still merely a baby.
Everything’s well and Jack’s alive, except for the opposing problem that Jack was born a wizard and Jessamine
Longbranch put a Warrior stone in Jack. Because Jack didn’t have a Wizard Weirstone in him, his powers remained
dormant and he was able to live a normal 15 years. Now that his powers have revealed him a powerful Anaweir to all
those looking, he goes into hiding- well, his abilities do- with the help of his aunt, his Anaweir neighbors, and Linda’s exboyfriend, wizard Leander Hastings to keep under the radar of the two Roses, the White Rose and the Red Rose- the two
houses (sides) in the Wizard Weir, who are both currently hunting down any Anaweirs that have a Warrior
Weirstone- ahem Jack ahem- to fight for their side in a fight to the death between two warriors of the Roses’ choice.
Now Jack has to figure out a way to stay alive and well hidden before he gets murdered- or reveals his true self and gets
himself killed.
This novel is a really good read- for mature preteens. It manages to mix every possible genre in its story line, no
matter how small of an appearance it makes. I actually learned about this series from my friend Rhys Groenewegen who,
when I asked, said a lot of wonderful things about the book. “I loved the story a lot. I heard about it from my older
brother and when he told me what it was about, I immediately wanted to read it. What especially captured my attention
was the fantasy and sci-fi genres and that Jack plays soccer too, like me. I really liked the story line and the plot. It had
twists and turns that I never saw coming. If you ever want to read a good action-packed novel, then this book and the
rest of the series should definitely be the one you just have to read.”

Bigger than Bigger:
The iPhone 6
Written By: Quinton LeBlanc
The new iPhone 6 has been announced. It features two new screen sizes, a new camera, and a
whole lot more. The iPhone 6 keynote was held on September 9, 2014. One of the more notable
features is the new screen size. Previously, iPhones have had smaller screen sizes of 3.5 inches and
4 inches. The new iPhone models now come in the sizes of 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches. Apple CEO
Tim Cook showed off the new phone and its features thoroughly at this event.
The phone now includes NFC, (Near Field Communication) which is used for purchases. You can
now connect your credit card to your iPhone, and use it to pay in stores rather than pulling out your
wallet and credit card. This service will be available in the US and will eventually make its way to
other countries, hopefully including Canada, over time.
The iPhone 6 has a brighter, clearer resolution. The iPhone 6 has a resolution of 1334×750 and
the iPhone 6 Plus (the larger iPhone model) has a resolution of 1920x1080. The new iPhones both
have super powerful A8 chip to power the huge phones. This makes the phones faster and it has the
ability to generate better graphics. The Phones also include M8 gyroscope sensor that can sense
elevation difference, and movement.
The iPhone 6 and 6+ include massive upgrades to the cameras. The iPhone 6 includes digital
photo stabilization, while the iPhone 6+ has physical image stabilization. If the video is shaky, the
phone has the ability to smooth it out. It pretty much makes your photos more clear and your videos
less shaky. The camera can also take videos in up to 60 frames per second. The iPhone 6+ can take
slow motion video with up to 240 frames per second.
Alongside the iPhone 6, Apple also announced their new Apple Watch. The event was streamed
worldwide on their website. The iPhone 6 will be released on Friday September 19th, running iOS
8, which is packed full with new features.
Overall, I think that the new iPhones are a big upgrade from their predecessors. The phones now
have enough power to compete against bigger phones such as Androids. The phones are a bit too
expensive if you ask me, but if you can get a good deal on it, go for it!
StudentsSay...
Please Be Patient
Written By: Yanna Papasin
Boys AND girls constantly complain about how they are always waiting for the other to finish getting ready.
Those who are waiting, find themselves- during these moments- asking, “Why try so hard?” Well, a study by a
Professor at Stanford University that took place earlier this year on this topic, finally found reasons and answers
as to why this happens. It was determined that the average woman spends approximately between 7-8 hours a
week on their appearance whereas men only spend 2-3.
But, since we are the teens, I’ll focus on us. Teenagers use a lot more time to get ready than adults. The
average female teen uses approximately 12-14 hours a week for their appearance, as opposed to the male teens,
who spend an estimated 4-5 hours, sometimes even less. You’re probably saying to yourself right now, “This is
not true and those facts don’t apply to me.” But when I try to thoroughly elaborate my research throughout this
article, you’ll start to understand why these numbers are what the statistics show.
The main reasons that I believe teens spend so much time getting ready are insecurities, followed by peer
pressure, which also kind of connects to insecurities. I understand that this is common to everyone, but I’ll be
straight up- only having one conversation may help a lot for the time being but it isn’t going to do that much
permanently because insecurities are like having cuts in the same place- they suck the first time but when they
come back, they’re even worse. Having insecurities is something that every person goes through, I’m pretty sure
of that. You can’t possibly look someone in the eyes and say that you’re 100% confident about yourself,
especially at our age. If you can, with no hesitation whatsoever, bravo, you’re a brilliant liar.
Insecurities come- most commonly to teenagers- from peer pressure. That may also be one thing you can’t
avoid, along with death and taxes. Both girls and boys try hard to fit in with their ‘clique’ by changing things
about themselves- style, appearances, attitude, and a lot more that you yourself can name, reader. Their parents
often get mad at the kids for doing so, but they seem to forget that they themselves couldn’t have possibly gone
through the same things that we are going through. And, if they have, they are in no place to judge us, but they
should offer their support and ‘wise parent advice’ instead and try to HELP. This however, also requires
cooperation from the child. They should be as honest as they could be to their parents about what really happens
at school. It’s better to tell them, than have them hear it from someone else.
If you feel that you just really can’t tell your parents for some reason, that’s okay too. You should confide in
someone who you feel is trustworthy to you. But you shouldn’t feel pressured to tell them everything, unless it
involves them. Keeping secrets is a really long discussion for another time.
If, however, you just so happen to be someone who CAUSES and actively participates in peer pressure and
imposes insecurities on others and you know it’s you, it’s okay because it does happen at one point too, but it’s
also not okay because at your age you should be old enough to tell when you’re doing something wrong.
Don’t mistake someone else’s smile because it could be just a cover. Your peers could be really happy to see you.
But it could also mean they need you- for help, for you to stop, who knows? Smiles mean a million things. The
best you could do at that point is try your best to help. Help them and yourself. It may not seem like that much of
a difference to you, but to someone else it could mean the world. It doesn’t have to be an extravagant gesture,
like buying them five boxes of their favorite food then getting down on your knees. Sometimes they might not
even like so much attention directed at them that way. Something even as simple as a hug or a smile can make
their entire day. As Matthew Espinosa once said, “Live simply so others can simply live.”

Boots!
Written by: Angelika Bondoc
I decided to write about boots,
since fall is here and winter is right
around the corner! Not only do
boots keep your feet warm, but
some boots will protect you from
the slippery ground.
I honestly don’t know who
invented boots, but whoever it is,
thank you so much! There are
many kinds of different boots.
There are sports boots, work boots,
equestrian boots, military boots,
winter boots, etc. Some are up to
your knees, and some are lower.
They come in different lengths,
colors, and styles.
Also they are all made
differently. Some are rubber, some
have fur, some have heels, and
some even have pockets. They are
great for anything! And it’s not
only Canadians who wear boots,
people from different parts of the
world do
I don't think I am the only St.
Pat's student who appreciates
boots. When I brought up this topic
with my classmates, they expressed
their love of boots too.
"They are very protective, and
when I wear boots they are very
comfortable," stated an eighth
grade boy.
Another student explained that
"They are very fashionable and
they keep my legs warm!”
Teen Vanity
Written By: Sam Mazerolle
Did you know that a lot of teens today are concerned about
their looks more than they are concerned about their friends?
According to Mail Online, the average female spends
approximately 474 days, in her lifetime, concerned about her
looks. I think that this is a really sad fact because this is time that
you could be spending with friends or family. This is time that you
cannot get back, and it seems pointless to waste this time with
your appearance.
When asked about where students receive these negative
pressures, Ms. Maloughney, a grade 2 teacher at St. Pat’s said,
“The media says that looks are the most important thing.” I agree
with what she said because these kinds of messages are all over
magazines covers. Ms. Maloughney also added that “It is
impossible to look photo- shopped in real life.”
When I asked Shae-Lynn Henneigh, a grade 9 student, which
celebrity she thought was the most vain, she had said that she
thought it was Nicki Minaj. She said that Nicki seems to never be
seen out in public without her face on (make-up) and hair done.
Obviously, a lot of people and celebrities do this, but not as much
as her.
If you are not sure what vanity means, it means that a person
(and in the case of this article, teenagers) cares about their looks a
bit too much. They look in the mirror every single chance they get
and are often critical of their appearance. This is an issue that we
should be concerned with because some people care more about
their looks more than school, or other interests. I find this to be a
major issue that negatively impacts teens today because this
attitude starts drama with other girls being jealous because
another girl is, for example, way prettier.
In my opinion, people should have to wear uniforms because
others can’t afford the ‘apple bottom jeans and the boots with the
fur.’ A lot of people have only $20 to spend on their whole outfit
while others spend $20 on just their socks! Even though I, to be
honest, am one of those people who may spend too much money on
clothes, it’s not fair that people get judged on their looks instead of
their personality!
