ON THE COVER
This month’s cover was designed by
Brokaw —a lean, nimble strategic-creativedigital agency famous for helping a handful
of premier global, national, and regional
brands rise above the blah blah. Because you
don’t need a bad case of the flu and icy roads
to remind you it’s winter in
Cleveland. All you need is a
little Brokaw. (And maybe a
sweet cyber snowflake made
with technology and love.)

it’s almost ADDY time! As you’re putting pretty ribbons and
bows on your holiday gifts, don’t forget to wrap up your best
work from the past year too. The deadline for entries is Wednesday, January 5, 2011 and you can find details on the AAF-Cleveland website.
And as long as you’re in the giving mood, don’t forget to give
your favorite college student the gift of career preparation by
sending him or her to our annual Communications Career Day event, which will be
held on Monday, December 20 at The Plain Dealer. Help a student become more
savvy in social media, more entrepreneurial, better coached for the employment
search and get a better understanding of the dynamics of client vs. agency aspects of the business. Interested in helping out? Contact the AAF office for more
information.
As we look ahead to 2011, we have some exciting things planned, including
opportunities to bring more national recognition to our members here in the
CLE. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months. In the meantime, feel
free to contact me (as always) with any questions or suggestions you have
about the club.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
As we reach the end of another year I
thought it was a good idea to give our
members a “State of the Club” report on
how we’re doing. I can happily report
that things are beginning to look up.
After a challenging 2009-10 fiscal year
where revenue and membership were
down, the current fiscal year is showing definite signs of improvement both
in revenue and membership. As of this
writing our membership is at just under
350 and holding steady. We’ve added
new corporate members and attendance
at our monthly luncheons has improved
over last year.
We continue to strive to bring in topnotch speakers on relevant topics to help
grow your business and enhance your
career. This year alone you’ve had the
opportunity to hear from John and Tug
from the American Copywriter blog, Ian
Schafer from Deep Focus who is responsible for the MadMen Yourself craze and
Eric Ryan, Brand Architect from Method
Products to name just a few. In addition
we’ve begun a Presidents’ Council and
have a Freelance Fair and Public Service
initiative in the planning stages for 2011.
With a new branding and promotional
effort from AAF National the ADDYs are
poised to become the MarCom industry’s premier award program.
Speaking of AAF National, did you
know that when you become a member of AAF-Cleveland you automatically
become a member of AAF National and
are eligible for their many value-added
programs? You become part of a network of over 40,000 members across
almost 200 clubs nationally. Your voice
is being heard on any number of issues
facing the advertising industry. Visit our
website at www.aafcleveland.com and
click on the membership tab to find out
about the numerous local and national
discount programs.
As always, we’re always open to new
ideas and thoughts from our members.
Drop me a line at [email protected].
I want to wish you all the happiest of
holidays and a prosperous new year.
Career Day Is
Around The Corner
Our Career Day committee has been
hard at work seeking to make this Career
Day the best ever. If you have college
students interning with you or know
of MarCom students, please let then
know about this information-packed
event. Committee chair Dick Clough
noted “we’re planning an intensive training program that will hopefully deliver
tangible strategies for attendees who are
looking for their first job in our industry.”
Speaker and panelists will include Terry
Egger, Michael DeAloia, Roger Frank and
representatives from many local agencies will be on hand to critique resumes,
portfolios and social media pages.
Career Day is on Monday, December
20 beginning at 8am at the Plain Dealer
located at 1801 Superior Ave. Breakfast,
lunch, AAFCLE Survival Guide and much
more is included for the $25.00 registration fee.
AAF-Cleveland would like to thank
presenting sponsor Virginia Marti College
and co-sponsor The Plain Dealer for their

PORTFOLIO

Fully 60 percent of our respondents felt
that business, in general, will be better in
2011; and specifically nearly 70 percent
thought our industry would do better in the
coming year with comparable numbers for
their individual businesses. The bad news
was that roughly 1 in 7 anticipated increasing staff during the next 12 months.
More than 60 percent saw more business
coming from within Northeast Ohio and
85 percent saw that business coming
from social media – with web development and mobile marketing also showing
sizeable gains.
