EXCITED ABOUT MY ROLE AS A THUNDER
STUDIO ANALYST
At the start of the NBA regular season in early October, I made my debut as the new analyst on FOX
Sports Oklahoma’s Thunder Live pregame and postgame shows. I get to work with studio hosts Dana
Larson, Ric Renner and John Rhadigan to provide perspective and analysis pregame, halftime and
postgame after every Thunder telecast on FOX Sports Oklahoma. It’s been so much fun to be back in the
studio watching and talking NBA basketball!

The Nancy Lieberman Foundation hit the links and teamed up with the Jim Utley Foundation for the Nancy
Lieberman Celebrity Classic on October 8th at Gleneagles Country Club to raise money for deserving children.
The Jim Utley Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 dedicated to rewarding youth for choosing to live drug free,
getting good grades, doing community service, and participating in healthy living activities such as organized
sports and clubs. In addition, JUF builds overall awareness about the dangers of street drugs and helps youth
and families through education and programs. We were proud to collaborate with such a worthy
cause that makes a positive difference in young people’s lives. It was a fun filled day with many
local sports celebrities in attendance.

MY RETURN TO OLD DOMINION
UNIVERSITY FOR HOMECOMING
I was invited to return to ODU to appear at a number of Homecoming events this fall. As soon as
I arrived, I attended the annual Alumni Honors Dinner at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott. It was so
impressive to see how many esteemed alumni there are in various fields around the country.
The following morning, I
attended the inaugural Alumni
Women’s Empowerment
Breakfast that included women
CEOs and student-athletes.
Later that day, I attended
the ODU Sports Hall of Fame
Induction ceremony, as MLB’s
MVP and Cy Young award
winner Justin Verlander lead
the lineup of ODU inductees.

to be a standout pitcher for

older brother’s behalf, as
Justin was pitching at the
World Series and couldn’t take the day off work to accept the award!
To top off the weekend of events, I served as Grand Marshal at the Homecoming Parade, where I
invited Kate, the daughter of my best friend growing up in Far Rockaway (Rosie), to join me. I then
did some tailgating with NFL Hall of Famer and friend Bruce Smith, and visited various tents and ate
lots of delicious food. Finally, we got to watch some football where the ODU Monarchs fell to the
Villanova Wildcats. Regardless of the outcome of the game, it was a great weekend of festivities and
so much fun to be a part of all the celebrations surrounding homecoming. Go Monarchs!

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY LIFETIME
SPORT ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Niagara University’s College of Hospitality and Tourism Management held its 12th annual
convocation Thursday, Oct. 18, in the university’s Alumni Chapel. Sponsored by the Maid
of the Mist Corp., the convocation is the college’s showcase event, during which it annually
honors national and international leaders in the hospitality and tourism industry.
I was awarded the Lifetime Sport Achievement Award as part of Niagara University’s College of Hospitality and Tourism Management convocation. As you know, my son T.J. is a
freshman at Niagara, so the timing of the award allowed me to visit with him while he was
settling in on campus. It was a great honor and a special treat for me.
“FIRST NIGHT 2012”
RECOGNIZING “ART AND SPORTS TOGETHER”
AT THE DALLAS OPERA
In early October, The Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House at the AT&T Performing Arts Center
announced that this season’s FIRST NIGHT theme will be Art and Sports Together, and revealed
that I would be receiving special recognition for my contribution as an athlete and
Olympian.
FIRST NIGHT is a marquee fundraising event for The Dallas Opera and a four-part
celebration composed of a grand Red Carpet entrance, lively Cocktail Reception, the
Season Opening Night Performance of Aida, and a cosmopolitan late-night fine dining experience in a lavishly decorated tent. It was a spectacular evening, and I was
proud to be included and honored at such a prestigious event for the arts.
The following day, the Dallas Opera produced a matinee for children of Jack and
the Beanstalk as part of an initiative to introduce more youth to the arts. Before the
show, I was invited back to host a private reading on-stage for all the children in
attendance. It was a witty performance and very engaging for all the youngsters.

LEARN SPORTS MOVES FROM THE PROS AT
DALLAS’ PEROT MUSEUM OF NATURE & SCIENCE
The Perot Museum of Nature and Science opened on December 1st and I, along with NFL hero Roger Staubach,
and NHL hockey great Joe Nieuwendyk were invited to the museum to film clips for a motion lab
that is part of the Sports Hall, one of 11 permanent exhibits in the museum.
The motion lab is designed to demonstrate how athletes come to excel at sports,
how they maintain skills and what happens, medically, when players are injured.
Visitors are able to pick one of the pros, watch him or her play in slow motion,
and then grab a stick or a ball and record their own movements. They can play
back their own performance on a touch-screen computer.
In line with the museum’s goal to make learning interactive, the lab will illustrate
concepts of kinesiology in a way that encourages visitors to try it themselves.
I am proud to be one of the professional athletes selected as part of this
exhibition.

MY HOLIDAY VISIT WITH KIDS FROM
PLANO CITY HOUSE
The day school got out for winter break, I met the children from City House in the gym at the
Christ United Methodist Church in Plano. City House is a charitable organization in Collin County
dedicated to providing emergency shelter and transitional residential services to children and
young adults who are in need due to abuse,

neglect or homelessness.
I spent time with the kids showing them
some basketball pointers from dribbling
and behind your back half-court shots.
I then was able to share a motivational
message with the children about being
anything you aspire to be, regardless of
your circumstances. I went on to explain
the positive impact sports has had on my
life. Before I left, I provided each child an
autographed basketball jersey as a holiday
gift.
City House is a wonderful organization, and
their dedication to provide shelter and help
to children who are neglected
or homeless truly impacts our
entire community. It was a true
blessing to be able to make a
difference this holiday season.
