What Happened?
“We were tanning at the pool on
Sunday when I noticed this family
had their little girl about 3 yearsold on the ledge of the pool trying to
get her to breath. The little girl
looked limp while they were holding
her. So we ran over to see what we
could do to help.”
- Tiffany
What was going through your
mind as it happened?
“Honestly, I was at a loss for words.
Tiffany Yam & Trish DiMatteo
I started thinking to myself how are we
going to get this little girl to breath and to come back to life. Everything
happened so fast that we didn't really have much time to think, instinct
kicked in and we knew we had to help.”

From the Directors Desk……………………………………..
On behalf of the Athletic Training Faculty and within the spirit of the upcoming Thanksgiving season, I would like to say a special thank you
to all of our Adjunct Faculty, our Preceptors, and Mary Lopez. The
Department of Athletic Training is successful due to our teamwork and dedication to providing high quality education and mentorship
for our students.
Please know that you are appreciated and we are grateful
for all that you do for the Department and our students!!!

Student Spotlight: The “A Team”
Congratulations to Melanie Day, Valle
Ledtke, Kelsey Moreno and Fallon Rovel
-Jones, Students-of-the-Month for October.
Preceptor John Steel had this to say about the
4 students:
“Football would like to nominate our four second year ATSs as a group for the October student-of-the-Month. Fallon, Kelsey, Valle and
Mel (who are commonly referred to as the “A
team” by coach Turner) have been great mentors to the level one ATSs. They have all taken
a lot of pride and initiative in teaching and
guiding the level one students through setting
a good example and by helping to cultivate a
strong team atmosphere. They have served as
a sounding board and have used their prior
experience working with football to provide
advice. They have also gotten praise from the
coaching staff for their work ethic and enthusiasm as well as from the athletes themselves
for the help they have provided them with post
-surgical rehabilitations. Overall, they do
things the right way, show that they care and
consistently do a great job day in and day
out.”
Dave Ahouse added: “It is fair to say that
the four of them have made my semester easier over at football and all are deserving of
the nomination. I agree completely with
John.”
Congratulations to Kelsey Greenwald and Chelsi Davis for also being nominated this month. Keep it up!
Educator Spotlight: Drialys Leal
Drialys Leal has been named Educator-of-the
-Month for October 2014. Tiffany Yam, who
nominated Drialys for this recognition, had this
to say about the education she provides:
“Since starting at UHZ Sports Medicine Institute Drialys has kept her promise of making
sure that I learn something new everyday. Although the clinic can get busy from time to time,
Drialys will never pass up a teaching moment.
A month and a half into my rotation I have already learned a great deal of information from
reading an x-ray, the importance of documentation, and understanding acute pathologies
that require immediate surgery. Any student who has been
taught or will be
taught by Drialys
would be lucky to
have her. Each and
everyday she shows
the passion and enthusiasm towards the
athletic training profession, which makes going to my clinical site exciting. I want to
thank Drialys for being a wonderful preceptor!”

Alumni Spotlight: Logan Rex
Logan Rex (Class of 2014)
is our Alumni spotlight for
the month of October. Logan
is working at the Sports Leadership and Management
(SLAM) charter school in Little Havana.
What is your favorite FIU
athletic training-related
memory? “Going to the
NASCAR event and being
able to see behind the scenes of what the
doctors and nurses do in that type of an environment. The entire medical staff was
very friendly and happy to talk about athletic training related topics such as cardiac
screening or EKG.”
What is the worst injury you have witnessed/treated? “A face-to-face collision
between two basketball players during
practice. Thank goodness all that was suf-
Page 3
fered was a bloody nose for
one player and a laceration to
the eyebrow on the other.”
What advice would you
give current students?
“Take every opportunity to get
experience in all the different
environments the Athletic
Training Program offers! For
the 2nd years, talk and make a
connection with coaches, physical therapists, other athletic trainers, doctors,
etc.— believe me, you never know who you will
come into contact with in the future! The Athletic Training world here in South Florida is small
and many job opportunities are by word of
mouth so make sure you are in good standing
not only with your mentors and supervisors but
your classmates as well. Make time to study
hard and have some fun! Eat healthy (as much
as you can), stay active, and SLEEP!!!”

How did you react?
“We told the family we
were CPR certified then
I checked the pulse. I
tilted the head back and
gave 2 breaths. The little
girl started to flutter her
eyes and gurgle, She
started making noises so
I started to tap her to try
and get her to come
back. The family started
to become involved and
crowd us so Tiffany
started doing crowd
control. We kept her on her back until her eyes
opened fully when we flipped her on her side
and she started to throw up water.”
-Trish
How did the Athletic
Training program prepare
you for this situation?
“The AT program requires
CPR certification; therefore,
preparing us for emergency
situations. During the Management of Medical Emergencies course we were able to improve our CPR skills. Using the
Simulation, Teaching, and Research (STAR) Center, we
were able to practice our skills
under real life situations. I felt
prepared for it, I knew what to do, and instinct kind of just kicked in”.

Iota Tau Alpha, Alpha Kappa Chapter
Iota Tau Alpha welcomed a guest speaker for October, Valerie Bozza, MS, ATC, LAT from
Fast Twitch Performance Training. The students enjoyed learning about neuromuscular activation techniques and the importance of proper form in functional activities. Second year student,
Meisha Harris, had this to say about the experience, “I was never taught how a runner should
run. And, I wasn’t aware that using your hamstrings to pull you through running instead of
using the gluteal muscles to push is a cause of hamstring strains. I can apply that knowledge
to my clinical experience with FIU Track and Field.”

A.T.S.O
On Saturday, October 18th, 2014, A.T.S.O. and Iota Tau Alpha collaborated to host the
Annual Alumni Homecoming Tailgating Party. The students currently in the program had
the chance to meet past alumni to ask them to provide guidance and insight on what the
future has in store for us as we prepare to transition into becoming certified athletic trainers. We also were able to enjoy the Homecoming game as FIU took on Marshall University!
