The orchestra invited fans this year to
vote on the music that will be played from a
selection of shows including “Oklahoma,”
“West Side Story,” “Carousel,” “My Fair Lady” and “The King and I.” This concert will
also feature Americana selections such as
“Armed Forces Salute,” “America the Beautiful” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever.”

Adirondack raconteur and musician Bill

hero. Characters include Lanty Martin and
his blue tick hounds, Uncle John and Aunt
Lillian, Ira Irish and the Reverend Waterson.
Bill, the youngest of 10 children, was
born in the Adirondack foothills to Emily
Bicknell and Roy Smith, a woodsman who

Mr. Smith has become well known
throughout the Northeast having performed in hundreds of schools, town halls,
church meeting rooms, and banquet halls,
as well as sites such as the National Folk
Festival in Lowell, Mass. and the Augusta
Heritage Center in West Virginia. He has

Linen, and has recorded a half-dozen albums of songs and stories.
Mr. Woodcock holds the title of Grand
Champion Fiddler of New York State, having won the state championship contest
three times: in 1977, 1979 and 1982.
The Concerts on the Waterfront is a free
program of the Sackets Harbor Historical
Society. All concerts are held from 3 to 5 on
Sunday afternoons at the Battlefield State
Park in the village. The rain site is the United Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Broad St.
The concert July 11 features Soft Spoken, a seven-piece rhythm and blues
group from Syracuse.
Reggie Siegler, bass player and founder,
records numerous commercials and
voiceovers for radio and TV in his Bishop
Marguerite studio. With the SSB he has
played nearly every venue available to a regional act. He majored in voice at Alabama
State University and currently plays bass
and is elder statesman for the SUNY Cortland Gospel Choir.
His wife, Donna Alford, brought up in
church choirs, has recorded numerous jingles and commercials in addition to nearly
17 years of performing with Soft Spoken.
She is also responsible for the vocal harmonies for which the SSB is noted. She has
been nominated for a Syracuse Area Music
Award (SAMMY) three times. She also sings
for ceremonies and events, and with her
husband has traveled the Caribbean, performing on cruise ships.

Sackets series will star ‘Soft Spoken’
FROM PAGE 3
Keith White, “the Kool One,” who keeps
the beat of the band, was introduced to
music in church at a very early age.
Rob Brown (trombone and keyboard) is
a music teacher at Blodgett Elementary in
Syracuse. A graduate of SUNY Potsdam’s
Crane School of Music, he also has a master’s degree in music education from Syracuse University. He has played with the
Black Lights and the Paul Robeson Company. He is also music minister at the Temple of Praise Church. As adjunct professor,
he directs the SUNY Cortland Gospel
Choir, which has competed in the National Gospel Choir competition. Rob and
Reggie have both traveled widely to Germany, England, Canada, Belgium and the
Netherlands.
Two recent additions to the band hail
from Ghana, West Africa, and have played
throughout Europe. On saxophone is Kofi
KariKari; Oboubi Ashlong plays guitar.
Reggie suggests that they may wear authentic African garb if weather permits.
Dave Kuykendall alternates with
Oboubi Ashlong on the guitar. He attended the Music Institute in Hollywood California where he studied theory, composition, improvisation and ear training under

CONCERT THURSDAY:
Virtuoso Ken Peplowski
to star with Siebel group
NORWOOD — The Norwood Village
Green Concert Series presents the Wally
Siebel All Star Big Band with clarinet virtuoso Ken Peplowski at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The band is comprised of professional
Northern New York musicians including
faculty from the Crane School of Music at
SUNY Potsdam and area music educators.
Mr. Siebel is co-founder of Northern
Music and Video in Potsdam, a member of
the Potsdam Clarinet Quartet and a past
member of the boards of Music Theater
North and the Community Performance
Series.
As director of the big band he has coordinated performances of guest artists such
as Ed Shaguhnessey, Laurel Massé, Jeff
Jarvis, John LaBarbara, Vince DiMartino,
Danny D’Imperio, Russ Kassoff, Dennis
McKrell, Michael Davis, Brett Zvacek, Gary
Smulyan, Ken Peplowski, Ray Vega and
others for the Norwood Village Green Concert Series and Crane Youth Music collaborations.
The musicians in the band have accompanied artists as well-known as Tony Bennett and John Pizzarelli but still find time
to play in the pit orchestras of many of local high school musicals.
Mr. Seibel has produced and hosted
North Country Public Radio’s “Big Bands
Are Alive and Well” and he also is a gourmet chef, guesting at The 1844 House and
The Cranberry Lake Inn. He is food critic
for the Watertown Daily Times.
Ken Peplowski, who has played jazz
since his early teens in Cleveland, Ohio,
has played venues including small clubs,
the Hollywood Bowl (at a sold-out concert), Las Vegas, the Newport Jazz Festival,
pops concerts and European festivals.
At home in New York City he has done

“By the time I hit high school, I was
teaching at the local music store, playing
in our family band, and playing jazz gigs
around town while still getting up early
every day for school,” he said.
After a year of college, he joined the
Tommy Dorsey Orchestra under the direction of Buddy Morrow.
In 1980, Mr. Peploswki moved to New
York City and was soon playing in all kinds
of settings, from Dixieland to avant-garde
jazz. In 1984, Benny Goodman came out
of retirement and put together a new
band, hiring Mr. Peplowski on tenor saxophone.
He wound up signing with Concord
Records, under the tutelage of Carl Jefferson, founder and president, and recorded
close to 20 albums as a leader. “The Natur-

set July 9 to 11 in Cape
SYRACUSE — The Syracuse Symphony
Orchestra’s summer schedule includes
outdoor concerts Friday in Watertown’s
Thompson Park and Sunday, July 4, at the
New York State Fairgrounds.
Both concerts are at 8 p.m.
Admission is free and open to the public.
The world-class SSO musicians will
perform Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever” and Tchaikovsky’s famous “1812
Overture” in addition to many other classic patriotic pieces.
A display of fireworks will follow.

CAPE VINCENT — Cape Vincent will
kick off the 42nd annual celebration of its
French heritage at 7:30 p.m. July 9 with a
free family block dance in front of the fire
hall on Broadway Street.
The French Festival (La Fete Française)
continues July 10, starting with the St.
John’s Episcopal Church pancake breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. in the parish center at
the church on Market Street. The “all-youcan-eat” breakfast includes pancakes,
sausage, juice and coffee.
Beginning at 8 a.m. July 10, the French
Festival Committee and TI Booster Club
will hold their annual sale of French bread
and pastries — which typically sell out
very quickly — at the fire hall on Broadway
Street.
Craft booths and exhibits open for the
day at 10 a.m. that Saturday. Some streets
will be closed for crafters to set up booths
of handmade, handcrafted and home
baked goods — items including handcrafted wood artifacts to homemade
fudge. A few of the carts will be selling
French t-shirts, berets and buttons. Others

from 3:30 to 6 p.m. on the village green.
Throughout the day there will be shows by
street performers.
The official opening of the French Festival is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the reviewing stand on Broadway with a welcome by
Mayor Timothy Maloney and Town Supervisor Urban Hirschey. The crowning of
French Festival queen will and the presentation of the queen’s court will follow. Concluding the opening ceremony will be a
proclamation by the French Festival
queen.
The festival parade begins at 2 p.m.
with “Napoleon” leading the way. The parade will include floats, marching bands
and more than 50 units from the United
States and Canada. Bands will perform in
front of the reviewing stand after the parade.
At 5 p.m., St. Vincent of Paul’s Church on
Kanady Street will hold a festival Mass,
spoken in French.
A fireworks display will begin at dusk,
around 9:30 p.m. The fireworks will be ignited from the breakwall on the waterfront.
The festival continues July 11 with the
arts and crafts show and sale from 10 a.m.
13618. There is a free 1k fun run for children, starting at 9:30, with registration beginning at 8:30.
Awards will be presented following the
run/walk. Walkers are eligible to win door
prizes. There is a permanent trophy engraved with names of the male and female
winners of the 5k and 10k races.

Next up in Norwood: big band and clarinet king
CONCERT THURSDAY:
Virtuoso Ken Peplowski
to star with Siebel group
NORWOOD — The Norwood Village
Green Concert Series presents the Wally
Siebel All Star Big Band with clarinet virtuoso Ken Peplowski at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The band is comprised of professional
Northern New York musicians including
faculty from the Crane School of Music at
SUNY Potsdam and area music educators.
Mr. Siebel is co-founder of Northern
Music and Video in Potsdam, a member of
the Potsdam Clarinet Quartet and a past
member of the boards of Music Theater
North and the Community Performance
Series.
As director of the big band he has coordinated performances of guest artists such
as Ed Shaguhnessey, Laurel Massé, Jeff
Jarvis, John LaBarbara, Vince DiMartino,
Danny D’Imperio, Russ Kassoff, Dennis
McKrell, Michael Davis, Brett Zvacek, Gary
Smulyan, Ken Peplowski, Ray Vega and
others for the Norwood Village Green Concert Series and Crane Youth Music collaborations.
The musicians in the band have accompanied artists as well-known as Tony Bennett and John Pizzarelli but still find time
to play in the pit orchestras of many of local high school musicals.
Mr. Seibel has produced and hosted
North Country Public Radio’s “Big Bands
Are Alive and Well” and he also is a gourmet chef, guesting at The 1844 House and
The Cranberry Lake Inn. He is food critic
for the Watertown Daily Times.
Ken Peplowski, who has played jazz
since his early teens in Cleveland, Ohio,
has played venues including small clubs,
the Hollywood Bowl (at a sold-out concert), Las Vegas, the Newport Jazz Festival,
pops concerts and European festivals.
At home in New York City he has done
verything from playing on the soundtracks
to Woody Allen movies, to taking on the

“By the time I hit high school, I was
teaching at the local music store, playing
in our family band, and playing jazz gigs
around town while still getting up early
every day for school,” he said.
After a year of college, he joined the
Tommy Dorsey Orchestra under the direction of Buddy Morrow.
In 1980, Mr. Peploswki moved to New
York City and was soon playing in all kinds
of settings, from Dixieland to avant-garde
jazz. In 1984, Benny Goodman came out
of retirement and put together a new
band, hiring Mr. Peplowski on tenor saxophone.
He wound up signing with Concord
Records, under the tutelage of Carl Jefferson, founder and president, and recorded
close to 20 albums as a leader. “The Natur-

ADIRONDACK YARNS:
Bill Smith accompanied
by fiddler Don Woodcock
in medley of lyrical lore
SACKETS HARBOR — The Concerts on
the Waterfront series continues July 4 with
Adirondack raconteur and musician Bill
Smith and Don Woodcock, master fiddler.
Mr. Smith hails from near Colton. Gathered around the old round oak stove, his extended family and an endless stream of visiting characters wove tall tales, most about
how a city slicker (or anyone official, like a
game warden) is dazzled and sometimes
hoodwinked by the wise and crafty rural
hero. Characters include Lanty Martin and
his blue tick hounds, Uncle John and Aunt
Lillian, Ira Irish and the Reverend Waterson.
Bill, the youngest of 10 children, was
born in the Adirondack foothills to Emily
Bicknell and Roy Smith, a woodsman who
delivered provisions to lumber camps
more than 70 years ago. Emily boarded the
loggers as they traveled from camp to
camp, so there was a steady supply of
north country originals. Once he learned
to play the guitar, Bill began hanging out

with the fiddlers at Cook’s Corners and
learned hundreds of the old tunes and ballads. He has spent his life in the Adirondacks, as a hunter, trapper, logger, fisherman, basket maker and guide.
Mr. Smith has become well known
throughout the Northeast having performed in hundreds of schools, town halls,
church meeting rooms, and banquet halls,
as well as sites such as the National Folk
Festival in Lowell, Mass. and the Augusta
Heritage Center in West Virginia. He has
appeared in dozens of publications, including National Geographic and Dirty
Linen, and has recorded a half-dozen albums of songs and stories.
Mr. Woodcock holds the title of Grand
Champion Fiddler of New York State, having won the state championship contest
three times: in 1977, 1979 and 1982.
The Concerts on the Waterfront is a free
program of the Sackets Harbor Historical
Society. All concerts are held from 3 to 5 on
Sunday afternoons at the Battlefield State
Park in the village. The rain site is the United Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Broad St.
The concert July 11 features Soft Spoken, a seven-piece rhythm and blues
group from Syracuse.
Reggie Siegler, bass player and founder,
records numerous commercials and
voiceovers for radio and TV in his Bishop
Marguerite studio. With the SSB he has
played nearly every venue available to a regional act. He majored in voice at Alabama
State University and currently plays bass
and is elder statesman for the SUNY Cortland Gospel Choir.
His wife, Donna Alford, brought up in
church choirs, has recorded numerous jingles and commercials in addition to nearly
17 years of performing with Soft Spoken.
She is also responsible for the vocal harmonies for which the SSB is noted. She has
been nominated for a Syracuse Area Music
Award (SAMMY) three times. She also sings
for ceremonies and events, and with her
husband has traveled the Caribbean, performing on cruise ships.
