Welcome to The Pilbara
Whether you are after a spot of fishing or an insight
into Western Australia’s growing resource sector, the
Pilbara is a region of contrasts with many natural
attractions to explore.
With months of predictable warm weather and
clear blue skies, the region beckons travellers to
experience the timeless beauty of the Australian
landscape; from vast national parks to some of the
most beautiful coastline in the country.
Home to island reserves, a marine park and
stunning beaches, the Pilbara offers world-class
diving, snorkelling and fishing with amazing marine
diversity. Be dazzled by the ocean sunsets, and time
it right and you will see the natural phenomenon of
the Staircase to the Moon, which can be viewed
from certain locations along the coast.
A visit to the Pilbara is not complete without
taking the time to discover Karijini National Park,
where massive escarpments, waterways and
plunging gorges combine to form an intriguing
landscape millions of years old.
The ancient Pilbara landscape embraces the
fascinating stories of an Indigenous culture.
The Warlu Way drive trail traverses through the
Pilbara tracing the way of the mystical sea serpent
while revealing the mysteries of Aboriginal
legends, from the deep pools at MillstreamChichester National Park to the prehistoric rock art
of the Burrup Peninsula petroglyphs.
Rich in natural resources and known as the ‘engine
room’ of the nation, the Pilbara provides ample
opportunity for visitors to learn about and tour
current mining operations.
Immortalised in the Australian film
Red Dog, Pilbara towns epitomise
a pioneering Aussie spirit
that is shared and celebrated

region of Australia.

Pilbara National Parks
The ancient landscape of the Pilbara is home to several stunning national parks.
Why not spend some time exploring the varied wonders of Millstream Chichester
and Karijini and discover a unique holiday experience.

Karijini National Park
The jewel of the Pilbara, the Karijini experience is an
adventure more than two billion years in the making.
One of its big attractions is its accessibility. Pull into
the car park, walk 50 metres to peer into a
100 metre gorge and see waterfalls and emerald
coloured rock pools below. For the fit and
adventurous, you can take one of the many walk
trails to explore the gorges further. If you encounter
a dingo in the park please do not feed.
Travellers can access the park from Karratha, Tom Price
or Newman via sealed and unsealed roads. Please
note the section of private road between Millstream
Chichester Park and Tom Price requires a permit which
can be obtained from the Visitor Centres located in
Tom Price, Karratha and Roebourne. There are
toilet, shower and basic camping facilities, and an
Aboriginal owned and operated eco-retreat. Make
sure you drop into the award winning interactive
visitor centre for a park brochure.
Karijini highlights include Fortescue Falls, Circular
Pool and Fern Pool in Dales Gorge. What is
possibly the most stunning lookout in Australia,
Oxers Lookout, is the junction of four mighty
gorges – Red, Weano, Joffre and Hancock Gorges.
Whether it’s a light walk or a vigorous hike you’re
seeking, you won’t be disappointed by your
Karijini adventure.
Karlamilyi National Park
(formerly Rudall River National Park)
At over 1,200,000 hectares, the Karlamilyi National
Park is the largest national park in Western Australia.
In fact, it is one of the largest in the world and one
of the most remote places on earth.
The park sits on the boundary between the Great
Sandy and Little Sandy Deserts. The closest
settlement is Newman, hundreds of kilometres
away. The area is extremely rugged and remote:
you should not travel through here unless you have
exceptional off-road experience, are well prepared
and have sufficient food, water, medical and
mechanical supplies. Please be aware there are no
facilities by way of communications, fresh water
supplies, signage, park ranger services, camping
facilities or picnic areas.
Millstream Chichester
National Park
Rolling hills, spectacular escarpments and winding
tree-lined watercourses make up the 200,000
hectare Millstream Chichester National Park. The
park boasts tranquil gorges and hidden rock pools,
like Python Pool which holds fresh water year
round. Further into the park, the Fortescue River
creates deep pools like Crossing Pool and Deep
Reach, whilst fresh water springs create tropical
areas like Jirndawurrunha Pool.
The Millstream Visitor Centre is about 140 kilometres
southeast of Karratha. Access into the park is via the
Millstream Link - a sealed then unsealed road or via
unsealed road from Roebourne. The Old Millstream
Homestead now serves as the park’s visitor centre
and gives a good insight into the pastoral history of
the area. There are no services in the park apart
from basic camping facilities, so if you are planning
to spend extended time within the park make sure
you have adequate supplies.
Park Fees & Passes
Visitor fees apply to some national parks and many
are managed by Park Rangers. If you intend visiting
a number of parks you may consider purchasing a

Take time out to discover an adventure...
2 billion years in the making.
10 days of adventure in the Pilbara on the warlu way
The wide open spaces of the Pilbara
provide the traveller with the perfect
place to experience the outback
holiday for which Australia is renowned.
Spectacular scenery and months on
end of sunny weather make it an ideal
destination to enjoy an extended drive
holiday. The Warlu Way is a designated
drive trail through the Pilbara and is a
great way to experience the highlights
of this region. Some roads may need a
permit before commencing your drive
– check with a Visitor Centre before
embarking on your journey.
Day 1 & 2 – Tom Price / Karijini National Park
Follow the Warlu Way from Nanutarra Roadhouse
on the Great Northern Highway and head to Tom
Price, the highest town in Western Australia. Take a
fascinating tour of the massive operations at Rio
Tinto’s open-cut iron ore mine. Drive to the top of
Mt Nameless - Jarndunmunha to the local
Indigenous people - for unsurpassed views of the
stunning Hamersley Ranges. Continue out of town
to the awe inspiring Karijini National Park. Take in
the award-winning Karijini Visitor Centre and its
interesting interpretative information. Walk the
designated trails into the depths of Dales Gorge,
be rewarded with a refreshing dip in the emerald
coloured pools of Fern Pool, Fortescue Falls and
Circular Pool. Enjoy an overnight stay in the park in
tented accommodation, or camp in one of the
two campgrounds.
Check out the west side of the national park
including the stunning Kalimina Gorge to explore
the waterfall upstream. Don’t miss the Joffre Falls
lookout and the most spectacular lookout in
Australia – Oxer’s Lookout, the junction of Weano,
Red, Hancock and Joffre Gorges. For the fit and
adventurous, descend to the bottom of Hancock
Gorge or Weano Gorge, swim in freshwater pools
amongst some of the oldest rocks in the world.
Day 3 – Millstream Chichester National Park
From Karijini to Millstream Chichester, journey along
the unsealed road adjacent to the longest privately
owned railway in the world. A permit to drive on this
private road can be obtained from the Tom Price
Visitor Centre. You will encounter more than one
2.5km locomotive transporting iron ore from the
inland mine to the Port of Dampier. Visit the original
Millstream Homestead, which has been transformed
into the park’s Visitor Centre. Walk trails take you
around the lushly tropical Jirndawurrunha Pool
which links the homestead with Crossing Pool.
Enjoy the spectacular sunset at Cliff Lookout. Before
exiting the park, take a drive along the winding road
to the peak of Mount Herbert for amazing views of
the plain. Upon descent enjoy a refreshing swim at
Python Pool. Camp in one of the several designated
areas within the park.
Day 4 – Dampier Archipelago & Burrup Peninsula
Travel to Karratha and Dampier and jump onboard a
cruise around magnificent Dampier Archipelago. Great
swimming and snorkelling can be had in many of the
protected beaches and bays of the Archipelago. From
July to September, migratory whales can be seen in
large numbers. For the more independent-minded
traveller, hire a boat and head out amongst the 42
islands into the deep blue for some serious fishing.
Red emperor, coral trout and snapper feature in the
daily catch. Head to the protected beach at Hearson
Cove on the Burrup Peninsula and check out nearby
Deep Gorge to see an array of Aboriginal rock
engravings known as petroglyphs. Afternoon
shadows allow visitors a superior view of the
thousands of petroglyphs at this site.
Visit the Karratha Visitor Centre where you can join
a tour of the mine facilities and learn about the
huge exports of iron ore and natural gas that make
this region the economic powerhouse of Australia.
Day 5 – Point Samson
Continue on your journey to Point Samson,
enjoying a stop in the historic town of Roebourne
and drop into the Visitor Centre. It is located within
the historic Old Gaol and museum. It provides a
great opportunity to discover the region’s rich,
colourful history. Drive or walk Emma Withnell
heritage trail and step back in time, but before
heading out of town be sure to check out local
Indigenous artists at work at one of the nearby art
galleries. Don’t miss the historic buildings at
Cossack, the earliest port along the WA coastline
and enjoy the view from Reader Head Lookout.
The fishing village of Point Samson is located right
on the water, with a number of accommodation
options. Before you leave ensure you take the time
to enjoy a sunset drink and seafood feast whilst
overlooking the picturesque coast.
Cemetery Beach. You can’t miss the massive salt
piles that act as a gateway to the town, which is just
one of the major exports that help to make this port
one of the busiest in Australia.
Day 7 & 8 – Cape Keraudren / Eighty Mile Beach
Driving north from Port Hedland on the Warlu Way,
there are a number of places to turn off to the coast
and enjoy a few days of relaxing camping. Visit the
Cape Keraudren Coastal Reserve, a haven for marine
and terrestrial animals and make camp. Eighty Mile
Beach is a little further along the highway and has a
large caravan park with cabins, powered and
unpowered sites. Fish for threadfin salmon from the
beach and marvel at the sight of the endless stretch
of sand that gives this place its name.
Day 9 – Marble Bar
Backtrack from Eighty Mile Beach and then turn
inland towards Marble Bar, famous for its record
stretch of high temperatures. During the winter
months the weather is very pleasant, with warm
sunny days and cool nights. See the ‘marble bar’ that
gave the town its name and find out what it really is
made of. Seek out one of the several waterholes in
the area that make this place a real oasis.
Day 10 – Newman
Head back to the highway and make your way to
the inland Pilbara town of Newman. The
southernmost town in the Pilbara, Newman was
established as a mining town to service the giant
Mount Newman iron ore mining operations. It is
now a busy regional centre. Whilst there visit the
Opthalmia Dam or take a tour of the mine site. If
travelling in a four-wheel-drive it is possible to take
the unsealed road from Marble Bar to Newman.
Make sure you enquire about road conditions
before embarking.
Day 6 – Port Hedland
Rejoin the Warlu Way and head north to Port
Hedland via the historic copper mining town of
Whim Creek. Tour BHP Billiton port facilities, follow
the cultural and heritage trail and check out the
historical museum and Court House Gallery. Visitors
can enjoy the harbour, the closest vantage point in
Australia to observe the movement of massive
ore-carriers and salt ships passing through. At certain
times of the year turtles can be seen nesting on

Central Pilbara Coast
Onslow & the Mackerel Islands
Located 1,386 kilometres north of Perth the
beachside township of Onslow is the perfect
holiday stop-over and one of the few places where
the sun rises and sets over water.
Onslow enjoys a year round idyllic climate and the
picturesque Ashburton River is just a half hour drive
away. Enjoy fishing and mud crabbing at Five Mile
or Three Mile Pool. Visitors are advised not to swim
at the Ashburton River or creek systems in the area
as Estuarine Crocodiles have been reported to
inhabit these waters, but there are beaches in town
where you can take a dip. Near the mouth of the
Ashburton, discover the ruins of Old Onslow where
historic buildings, including the gaol and
courthouse, can still be seen. Accommodation
includes a caravan park, chalets and a resort motel.
The Mackerel Islands are located 22 kilometres off
the Onslow coast and their casual ambience
provides an ideal escape for all holiday seekers.
Jump aboard with a local operator by boat or light
plane to explore the colourful marine wonderland.
Go fishing, snorkelling and diving, relax on white
sandy beaches, beachcomb for shells and enjoy
picturesque sunsets.

Karratha
The next City of the North is located 1,535 kilometres
north of Perth on the North West Coastal Highway.
Aptly named ‘good country’, Karratha is the fastest
growing town in the Pilbara. Founded in the late
1960s due to the tremendous growth of the iron ore
industry, today it’s a busy, modern town. Climb
Water Tank Hill lookout for panoramic views or
enjoy a cultural experience with a walk along the
Jaburara Heritage Trail. Head to the protected beach
at Hearson Cove for a swim, have a picnic and stay
to see the Staircase to the Moon on certain dates
from March to October. On your way through to the
cove, check out nearby Deep Gorge to see an array
of Aboriginal rock engravings, estimated to be some
of the oldest on the planet. Karratha is also the
gateway to the 42 islands of the magnificent
Dampier Archipelago and Millstream Chichester and
Karijini National Parks.
Accommodation options include caravan parks,
motel/hotels and apartments, and prior bookings
are highly recommended. With near-perfect warm
winter temperatures, it’s just the place to escape the
southern cold and to soak up the sun.
Dampier
Located 20 kilometres west of Karratha, this port
town takes its name from the English explorer
William Dampier. Built by Hamersley Iron in 1965, it
is one of the largest tonnage shipping ports in
Australia and houses the massive export facilities of
Pilbara Iron, Dampier Salt and the North West Gas
Shelf Project.
It is also the departure point for boat cruises and
fishing charters into the spectacular Dampier
Archipelago. Dampier has a beautiful white beach
with barbecue facilities where you can relax under
coconut trees and watch the spectacular sunsets.
Don’t miss the memorial to the Pilbara Wanderer
Red Dog on the way into town. Stop and read about
the North West’s favourite canine immortalised in
‘Red Dog’, one of the most successful Australian
movies of all time.
Dampier Archipelago
Island Reserves
The Dampier Archipelago’s 42 islands lie off the
Pilbara coast. They offer excellent boating with
many world-class snorkelling, diving and fishing
locations. White sandy beaches and blue waters are
ideal for swimming or just lazing the day away.
Hearson Cove
Expe riences
Green Hawksbill and Flatback turtles nest on
several beaches in the archipelago and six
species of marine mammals can be sighted in
the waters around the islands. The area is well
known for whale watching and some of the
islands have the remains of old Pearling
settlements dating back to the 1800s.
Most of the islands are Island Reserves so check
with DEC on (08) 9182 2000 before you go as to
which are accessible for visiting and camping.

Montebello Islands Marine Park
Lying 130 kilometres west of Dampier is the
Montebello Islands Marine Park. The reserve is a group
of more than 250 low-lying limestone islands and islets
surrounded by white sandy beaches and the turquoise
waters of the Montebello Islands Marine Park. The
water is perfect for diving, snorkelling, and exploring,
as well as providing fertile fishing grounds in the
recreational and general use zones. Collect a brochure
highlighting the zones from the DEC office in Karratha.
The islands gained notoriety in the 1950s when Britain
tested three atomic weapons there.
Burrup Peninsula
The Burrup Peninsula is living proof of the more
than 30,000 year old history of the Aboriginal
people in the Pilbara and home to thousands of
Aboriginal archaeological sites. Rock engravings,
known as petroglyphs, may number almost a
million, making it the largest rock site in the
world. You can see good examples at Deep
Gorge near Hearson Cove Beach, within easy
walking distance and accessible to all vehicles.
Enquire at the Karratha Visitor Centre for safety
and seasonal information. The engraved motifs
PAGE 34 | www.australiasnorthwest.com
generally depict anthropomorphic figures,
fauna including a Thylacine (commonly known
as the Tasmanian Tiger), animal tracks and
abstract symbols, and are considered to be
among the earliest examples of art in the world.
These Aboriginal sites are unique and an
irreplaceable cultural resource for all and the
Burrup Art was heritage listed in July 2007.
Please help preserve these sites for future
generations; avoid touching or stepping on
the art and do not mark the art in any way.
Roebourne
Named after the first Western Australian
surveyor, General John Septimus Roe, and
proclaimed in 1866, Roebourne is the oldest
settlement in the North West. Make sure to
visit the heritage listed Old Roebourne Gaol
- now home to the Visitor Centre & Historical
Museum, offering an insight into pioneer and
Indigenous history along with local arts and
crafts. Check out one of many Aboriginal art
galleries and the Emma Withnell Heritage Trail, a
52 kilometre walk or drive route to Cossack that
commemorates the ‘first lady of the Pilbara’.
Cossack
Originally known as Tien Tsin, Cossack was
established in 1863 as the North West’s first port
for the pastoral and pearling industries. Today
Cossack is a ghost town, although many beautifully
restored historical buildings still offer a fantastic
insight to the hardships and successes of the first
settlers. The ‘Cossack Art Awards’ are held annually
with the Bond Store coming to life with artists’
work from around the country. The Old Police
Barracks offers budget accommodation and the
restored Customs Building hosts a modern café
and art studio.
Wickham
Named after J.C. Wickham, the captain of HMS
Beagle, who surveyed the North West coast in
1840, Wickham was built to service the Pilbara
Iron workers and is home to the massive port
facilities at Cape Lambert. Check out the 70 tonne
haul truck on display at the entrance to town or
wander along the secluded beaches around Port
Walcott for an ideal fishing spot.
Courthouse and Gaol, Old Onslow
Point Samson
Pristine beaches, beautiful coral gardens and
abundant fish beckon you to Point Samson.
The acres of coral grounds off the nearby
islands are some of Australia’s best, while
the beaches offer excellent snorkelling and
fishing all year round. The town provides
four and half star resort accommodation,
several boutique style bed and breakfasts,
modern caravan parks and holiday homes.

Mt Nameless, known as Jarndunmunha to local
Indigenous people. The peak stands 1128 metres
above sea level - take a drive or walk to the top for
an amazing view. The wonders of Karijini National
Park are just 45 minutes away and you can join a day
tour to explore this ancient land.
Pannawonica
Situated 47 kilometres along a sealed road off the
North West Coastal Highway, this small mining town
provides a western gateway to Millstream
Chichester National Park, though accommodation is
very limited. Usually a quiet country town, each
September the community comes to life for the
Robe River Rodeo.
Paraburdoo
Lying 24 kilometres north of the Tropic of
Capricorn on a sealed road linking Nanutarra
Roadhouse and Tom Price, Paraburdoo is a
small mining town. Named after the Aboriginal
term Pirupardu, meaning ‘meat feathers’,
because of the town’s proliferation of white
Corellas, Paraburdoo is home to the main
commercial airport for the inland Pilbara
region and offers motel accommodation.
Newman
Newman is the largest modern mining town in the
inland Pilbara. Sitting on the edge of the Western
Desert, the town is surrounded by the ancient
eroded hills of the Ophthalmia Ranges and
dominated by Mount Newman, a peak 1053 metres
above sea level. In 1957 a massive iron ore deposit
was discovered at Mt Whaleback which is now the
largest single open-cut iron ore mine in the world.
Take a tour to see the huge mining operations and
visit the Mining and Pastoral Museum.
Hotel and caravan park accommodation is
available; early bookings are recommended.
Nullagine
North of Newman, the tiny township of Nullagine
was first proclaimed after the discovery of gold in
1888 and lays claim to further discoveries of
diamonds and gemstones. Nullagine’s red granite
hills create a unique landscape with an abundance
of rock holes, winter wildflowers and wildlife. Take a
walk among the ancient rocks of Conglomerate
Gorge or enjoy the peace and natural beauty of
Elle’s Pool.
Marble Bar
Marble Bar is a unique example of a pioneering
outback town from the gold rush days of the late
1800s. It is home to the Comet Gold Mine and the
Corunna Downs Airbase which was one of the best
kept secrets of World War II. Marble Bar has earned
the reputation as Australia’s hottest town from the
consistently high temperatures during the summer
months, but in pleasant contrast, the winter months
boast mild daytime temperatures and cool nights.

Port Hedland
Approximately 220 kilometres north of Karratha,
Port Hedland is a small town with a relaxed
lifestyle, uncrowded beaches and a growing
range of facilities, activities and events. It’s also
renowned for its massive resource industry, long
trains, big ships and salt piles. In addition to
being the world’s largest bulk commodity
export, Port Hedland has become an
increasingly popular port of call for cruise ships.
Whale and turtle watching is a popular activity
during certain times of the year, and fishing is a
rewarding pastime for locals and visitors keen to
cast a line. Millstream and Karijini National Parks
are within driving distance from the town.
Visit Dalgety House and step back in time at
this historic pastoral dwelling, museum and
interpretive centre. View exhibitions that will
capture your imagination including works of
local indigenous artists at the Courthouse
Gallery. Wander through the open air Don
Rhodes Mining Museum or follow the Cultural
and Heritage Trail which clearly maps Port
Hedland’s rich indigenous and early European
history. Catch the breathtaking views from
Koombana Lookout or head off and explore
the tidal creeks at Pretty Pool and Six Mile
Creek and enjoy the seasonal display of
wildflowers. Caravan parks, motels and hotel
accommodation fills quickly so advance
bookings are strongly recommended.

Discovered in 1957 by veteran prospector Stan Hilditch,
the Iron Ore deposit was named Whaleback because
the hill resembled the shape of a humpback whale.
Mt Whaleback has some of the highest grade Iron Ore
being mined in the world, and has the enviable title of
‘world’s largest open cut iron ore mine’. Tours depart daily
from the Newman Visitor Centre from April through to
September and Mon – Fri from October through to March
and go for approx 1.5 hours. It is an essential requirement
of the mine tour that all visitors wear long sleeved shirts to
the wrist, full length pants and fully enclosed shoes.
*Special tours for groups and specific times can be made
by prior arrangement, please just ask our friendly staff.
