Beware of Publishers Clearing House Scam From Jamaica!
The Coal County Sheriff’s Office has received several reports of a suspected Publishers Clearing House scam. Jailer/dispatcher Janet Marlowe
said all the citizens who have contacted the sheriff’s office have received
the suspicious calls on their cell phones. The telephone number showing
on Caller ID is 876-894-0645. One person stated that the caller area was
shown as Jamaica.
The number one thing to remember concerning telephone calls from any
unknown person is this: DO NOT FURNISH ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION TO THE CALLER. ABOVE ALL, DO NOT GIVE YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER OR BANK INFORMATION.
The following is a report published by the real Publishers Cleaning
House:
Reports of Publishers Clearing House Scams from Jamaica are on the
rise. These are not from the REAL Publishers Clearing House.
At Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes integrity is the cornerstone
of our business. As such, we want to make sure that all consumers are protected from scams fraudulently pretending to be associated with our wellrecognized PCH name.
We would like to warn you about a rise in sweepstakes scams pouring
in from Jamaica, dangling the prospects of huge winnings, many of which
are illegally using the Publishers Clearing House name. There is a catch in
these scams – you will be told all you have to do is send or wire money to
claim the bogus prize. DONT FALL FOR THIS! Be warned that anyone
asking for payment of any type in order to claim a sweepstakes prize is a
SCAMMER! Legitimate sweepstakes are free and no purchase is ever necessary to enter or win a prize – that is the law! At Publishers Clearing House
we never ask for money to present a prize and our ‘no purchase necessary’
message is prominently displayed in all of our promotional mailers.
Here is generally how the Jamaican Publishers Clearing House scam
starts: Scammers inform their targets they have won a sweepstakes prize
but first need to make some type of payment to obtain the prize. Scammers
oftentimes use the name of PCH or some other well-recognized, trusted
brand. The scammers build trust and rapport with their targets. But pay-
ments only lead to more requests for money. Jamaican scammers may call
you on the phone, send you an email or mail you a letter (sometimes with a
fake check enclosed). Whatever the method of contact, the scam is always
to try and get you to part with your hard-earned money.
US Government officials, the US Postal Inspection Service, police and
law enforcement agencies around the country, as well as The Federal Trade
Commission are all working together to combat the rise in scams coming
out of Jamaica. It is a difficult and arduous task as these cross-border, transnational scams are among the hardest crimes to investigate and prosecute as
there is no face-to-face interaction. But we are all fighting back together.
Publishers Clearing House has been actively working with these agencies, sharing information gathered and tracked in our anti-scam database. We regularly provide such data to the law enforcement officials including
the Postal Inspection Service, Office of Homeland Security, FBI and the
US Attorney’s Office. What’s more, we are just one of handful of private
companies that contributes anti scam data directly to the Federal Trade
Commission’s Consumer Sentinel Database network. Consumer Sentinel,
maintained by the FTC, is a secure online database of consumer complaints
available to law enforcement around the country and the world. PCH is
pleased to be a regular contributor and do all we can to assist in providing
data to help in these fraud investigations.
Here are some final tips to protect you from these Jamaican based Publishers Clearing House scams:
Beware of any unsolicited call that may come from the Jamaican area
code of 876 and includes an offer that sounds too good to be true. Hang up
the phone!
If you are asked to send or wire money for any reason whatsoever to
claim a prize - DONT! It is a SCAM! At Publishers Clearing House we
NEVER ASK FOR MONEY to be sent to claim a prize.
At Publishers Clearing House our major prizes of $10,000 or more are
awarded in person, unannounced, by our famous Prize Patrol, or through
notice in a certified letter. We DO NOT call our winners ahead of time. PAGE A-2—COALGATE RECORD REGISTER—JUNE 11 , 2014
This One’s for You, Dad!
This past week I ran across “The Little Book of Whittling.”
It reminded me of the “good old days”, when the “Spit &
Whittle” club would gather almost every day outside of our local
courthouse. There was more spitting then whittling, along with
a lot of great stories.
In my growing-up days, I lived just one block from the
courthouse and would often walk over to watch what those
old timers were doing and listen to their conversation. It was
exciting for this youngster to be around these folks and times
that I will never forget.
The “Spit & Whittle” club has been gone for many years but
the memories remain.
I do not remember the last time I saw anyone whittle. Like
many other things, whittling may just be a memory from the
“good old days.”
—CC—
Speaking of memories, this is my favorite time of the year . . .
the time for school reunions.
This year my Class of ’65 will be joining the Class of ’64 in
hosting a Junior-Senior Prom like we had in high school. You
will see formals from the 1960s and white sport coats and music
from the 1950s and 60s with Ronnie Kaye. Many of you will
remember that he was one of the great KOMA DJs many years
ago.
I am looking so forward to this trip down Memory Lane.
—CC—
Speaking of “Memory Lane”, how many of you remember . .
.
When the worst thing you could do at school was smoke in the
bathrooms, flunk a test or chew gum. Girls wore skirts that had
to touch the floor when you were on your knees, boys wouldn’t
be caught dead with baggy pants or holes in their clothes and
NOBODY had to wear a backpack.
And the banquets were in the cafeteria and we danced to a juke
box later, and all the girls wore pastel gowns that wouldn’t dare
show cleavage and the boys wore suits for the first time and we
were allowed to stay out until 12 p.m.
When a ’57 Chevy was everyone’s dream car . . . to cruise, peel
out, lay rubber and watch drag races.
And people went steady . . . girls wore a Saint Christopher or
her boyfriend’s class ring with an inch of yarn so it would fit her
finger. Boys didn’t have to wear anything because everybody just
“knew” he was her steady.
And no one every asked where the car keys were ‘cause they
were always in the car, in the ignition, and the doors were never
locked. And you got in big trouble if you accidentally locked the
doors at home since no one ever had a key.
Remember lying on your back on the grass with your friends
and saying thing like “That cloud looks like a . . . “
Remember “ditch’em”, street football, four wheel skates that
attached with a key you wore around your neck with a piece of
yarn? Remember you could play all the way to the end of the
street without mom worrying.
And playing baseball with no adults to help kids with the rules
of the game. Back then, baseball was not a psychological group
learning experience – it was a game.
Remember when stuff from the store came without safety caps
and hermetic seals ‘cause no one had yet tried to poison a perfect
stranger.
And . . . with all our progress . . . don’t you just wish . . . just
once . . . you could slip back in time and savor the slower pace . .
. and share it with the children of the 80s and 90s . . .
Or visit with someone who can still remember Nancy Drew,
The Hardy Boys, Laurel & Hardy, Howdy Doody and The Peanut
Gallery, The Lone Ranger, The Shadow Knows, Nellie Belle, Roy
and Dale, Trigger and Buttermilk, as well as the sound of a real
mower on Saturday morning and summers filled with bike rides,
playing in cowboy land, baseball games, bowling and visits to the
neighbors’ pool . . .
And sneaking into the cupboard to eat Kool-Aid powder . . .
and bread with sugar as an afternoon snack.
When being sent to the principal’s office was nothing compared
to the fate that awaited a misbehaving student at home.
Basically, we were in fear for our lives, but it wasn’t because
of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc. Our parents and
grandparents were a much bigger threat! But we all survived
because their love was greater than the threat.
I am glad I grew up in the good old days!
—CC—
Overheard at one recent reunion . . .
As we get older, we tend to slow down. One day a man stepped
on a snail and his friend asked him why he did that. He said,
“That thing has been following me around all day long.”
—CC—
I have heard some senior citizens say that their memory is not
as good as it used to be. That is not the case with me. In fact,
my wife says I even remember things that never happened.

Does Your Vote Matter?
—“Why Vote” program set for June 17
On June 24, Coal County
will go to the polls to vote
on local issues and candidates as well as state and national candidates. Will you
be there? Are you one of
those who thinks your vote
doesn’t mean much?
Coal County OHCE invites you to attend a program on Tuesday, June 17,
at 1:30 p.m. in the Homemakers building located one
block east of the post office.
The title of the program will
be “Why Should I Vote.”
The program will be taught
by Barbara Elkins, FCS educator for Atoka County OSU
Cooperative Extension Service.
Everyone is welcome to
attend. For more information, please call the OSU
Cooperative Extension Service at 927-2262 or e-mail
questions to [email protected].

As a Pastor I try to stay out
of local politics. I almost never
have all my members agreeing
on any local political issues.
I was appalled that someone
would pay for stamps to mail a

unsubstantiated accusations
without signing it, against
the 2 county commissioners
who are running for reelection! I started going to the
commissioner meeting last year
when many allegations were
being made against Alvin and
Mike. The allegations stopped
so I stopped attending. I talked
with a county employee about
one of the allegations, he stated
that county employees were
working on private property
and if I wanted he would take
me to the location and show
me why they were on private
property. It turned out the

More Summer Reading
Programs at Library
—Week 3: Musical instruments and juggling
The Summer Reading Program is going strong at the Coal
County Public Library with two weeks completed. These
are the programs that have been lined up for next week, June
16 and June 17:
Tweens/Teens (ages 10-17) — The tweens/teens program
on Monday, June 16, will include building and performing
with musical instruments made out of unusual items. A
homemade percussion instrument will be shown as an
example. The program begins at 2:00 p.m.
Children (ages 5-12) — “Juggle Whatever” is the
children’s program for Tuesday, June 17, 2:00 p.m. The
show will explain some fun facts about the science of
juggling! Juggling is not only really fun but at the same
time it connects the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
It helps increase our IQ and dexterity, and it builds the gray
cells in our brains! Now that’s science that is fun!
Juggling is not limited to three balls - there are many objects
that can be juggled. The jugglers will also demonstrate plate
spinning and scarf twirling as part of the show. So get ready!
Come Tuesday and learn juggling.
Both the tweens/teens program and the children’s program
will be held in the public meeting room at the library.
The programs are free. Sponsors include the Institute
of Museums and Library Services; Sonic, America’s DriveIn; and the Oklahoma Department of Libraries.
way to fix it was to go onto
private property and reroute
the water.
These seven allegations
were mailed with no return
address or signature. I suspect
the person sending them did
not want to face Mike, Brock,
and Alvin in court for slander
and defamation of character.
I tried to get them to hire me
for a Ghost Employee position
but was told that someone
allegedly already had that
position.
I want to ask you a question,
can you believe someone who
refuses to use their name when
making an unsubstantiated
allegation? This is just dirty
politics being used by someone
(or a supporter) who could not
be elected on his own merits.
Before you decide to believe
this call Mike and Brock, to
find out what they can do to
disprove these unsubstantiated
allegations.
Ask yourself this question,
who would have this
information available to
distribute to the voting
public? If someone comes to
mind call them and ask for
proof. Mike’s phone number
is 927-5768, and Brock’s
number is 927-6003.

Card of Thanks
There are no words adequate enough to express our
gratitude and appreciation to all of those who made visits, sent cards,
flowers and prayers for our mother during her last days. It meant so much to our family.
We want to especially thank Dr. Helton for all the years of caring for her and even though she
gave you a hard time, she truly loved you. To Billy Johnson
Johnston and the staff at Mary Hurley Hospital and Hurley Manor, we could not have asked more of you than what you gave. So many
of you are true angels. Thank you to Brown’s Funeral Service for your
you thoughtfulness and the
service you provided.
Our family is so grateful to Wendell Ingram for all the hours at the hospital and while she was
in the manor. Thank you for the wonderful service at her funeral. To all the singers from the
Tupelo Church of Christ for the beautiful music. She would have been so pleased. And finally
to the ladies of the Coalgate Church of Christ for the wonderful meal you provided for our family
after the service. We are truly thankful for our church family.
Even though we miss her, we are at peace, because we know she is in the hands
of a loving God.

women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components
associated with service lines and home plumbing. Coalgate Public Works Authority is
responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials
used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can
minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before
using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may
wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and
steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at
http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
Is my water safe?
We are pleased to present this year's Annual Water Quality Report (Consumer Confidence
Report) as required by the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). This report is designed to provide
details about where your water comes from, what it contains, and how it compares to standards
set by regulatory agencies. This report is a snapshot of last year's water quality. We are
committed to providing you with information because informed customers are our best allies.
Do I need to take special precautions?
Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general
population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing
chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other
immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections.
These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers.
EPA/Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of
infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe
Water Drinking Hotline (800-426-4791).
Water Quality Data Table
In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount of contaminants in
water provided by public water systems. The table below lists all of the drinking water contaminants that we detected
during the calendar year of this report. Although many more contaminants were tested, only those substances listed
below were found in your water. All sources of drinking water contain some naturally occurring contaminants. At low
levels, these substances are generally not harmful in our drinking water. Removing all contaminants would be
extremely expensive, and in most cases, would not provide increased protection of public health. A few naturally
occurring minerals may actually improve the taste of drinking water and have nutritional value at low levels. Unless
otherwise noted, the data presented in this table is from testing done in the calendar year of the report. The EPA or the
State requires us to monitor for certain contaminants less than once per year because the concentrations of these
contaminants do not vary significantly from year to year, or the system is not considered vulnerable to this type of
contamination. As such, some of our data, though representative, may be more than one year old. In this table you will
find terms and abbreviations that might not be familiar to you. To help you better understand these terms, we have
provided the definitions below the table.

Water Conservation Tips
Did you know that the average U.S. household uses approximately 400 gallons of water per day or 100 gallons per person per day? Luckily, there are many low-cost and no-cost ways to conserve water. Small changes can make a big difference – try one today and soon it will become second nature.
·
·
·
·
·
·
·
·
·
Take short showers - a 5 minute shower uses 4 to 5 gallons of water compared to up to 50 gallons for a bath.
Shut off water while brushing your teeth, washing your hair and shaving and save up to 500 gallons a month.
Use a water-efficient showerhead. They're inexpensive, easy to install, and can save you up to 750 gallons a month.
Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are full. You can save up to 1,000 gallons a month.
Water plants only when necessary.
Fix leaky toilets and faucets. Faucet washers are inexpensive and take only a few minutes to replace. To check your toilet for a leak, place a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait. If it seeps into the toilet bowl without flushing, you have a leak. Fixing it or replacing it with a new, more efficient model can save up to 1,000 gallons a month.
Adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered. Apply water only as fast as the soil can absorb it and during the cooler parts of the day to reduce evaporation.
Teach your kids about water conservation to ensure a future generation that uses water wisely. Make it a family effort to reduce next month's water bill!

Cross Connection Control Survey
The purpose of this survey is to determine whether a cross-connection may exist at your home or business. A cross connection is an unprotected or improper connection to a public water distribution system that may cause contamination or pollution to enter the system. We are responsible for enforcing cross-connection control regulations and insuring that no contaminants can, under any flow conditions, enter the distribution system. If you have any of the devices listed below please contact us so that we can discuss the issue, and if needed, survey your connection and assist you in isolating it if that is necessary. · Boiler/ Radiant heater (water heaters not included)
· Underground lawn sprinkler system
· Pool or hot tub (whirlpool tubs not included)
· Additional source(s) of water on the property
· Decorative pond
· Watering trough
Source Water Protection Tips
Protection of drinking water is everyone’s responsibility. You can help protect your community’s drinking water source in several ways:
·
·
·
·
·
·
Eliminate excess use of lawn and garden fertilizers and pesticides – they contain hazardous chemicals that can reach your drinking water source.
Pick up after your pets.
If you have your own septic system, properly maintain your system to reduce leaching to water sources or consider connecting to a public water system.
Dispose of chemicals properly; take used motor oil to a recycling center.
Volunteer in your community. Find a watershed or wellhead protection organization in your community and volunteer to help. If there are no active groups, consider starting one. Use EPA’s Adopt Your Watershed to locate groups in your community, or visit the Watershed Information Network’s How to Start a Watershed Team.
Organize a storm drain stenciling project with your local government or water supplier. Stencil a message next to the street drain reminding people “Dump No Waste - Drains to River” or “Protect Your Water.” Produce and distribute a flyer for households to remind residents that storm drains dump directly into your local water body.
Additional Information for Lead
If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant
women and young children.

Description of Water Treatment Process
Your water is treated by filtration and disinfection. Filtration removes particles suspended in the
source water. Particles typically include clays and silts, natural organic matter, iron and
manganese, and microorganisms. Your water is also treated by disinfection. Disinfection
involves the addition of chlorine or other disinfectants to kill bacteria and other microorganisms
(viruses, cysts, etc.) that may be in the water. Disinfection is considered to be one of the major
public health advances of the 20th century.

A message from Coal County 911
—Public’s assistance requested in resolving some 911 issues
On behalf of Coal County
911, we would like to thank
everyone for your support of
the 911service over the past
year. We want the citizens of
this county to know that the 911
service is fully functional and
we are working daily towards
making this system the most
top-of-the line system possible.
We greatly appreciate your
patience as we work diligently
to work the remaining kinks
out of the system.
We are asking for your
assistance in resolving some
issues that we are facing with
the 911 system.
Perhaps the most consistently
reoccurring issues with the
911 system at this time are
accidental dials. These calls
come from children playing
with old phones, people putting
phones in their pockets while
working, prank calls, and so
on and so forth. This issue can
be resolved with a few simple
steps.
First, be sure to remove the
battery and memory card from
any old cell phones that are
being used as children’s toys.
These phones are designed to
be used for emergencies even
when the phone is not active.
Next, if you carry your cell
phone in your pocket, please
remember to lock the keys so
that they can’t “pocket dial.”
These phones are designed
to call 911 simply by pushing
numerous keys at one time in

The 10th Amendment
and Common Core
By Senator Josh Brecheen
As the Senate author of
HB3399, which repeals Common Core, this is my fourth
column due to the complexities
of this issue.
The first column discussed
the history of how the Oklahoma Legislature adopted Common Core (prior to many of us
taking office) and the difficulties of our repeal attempt this
session. The second column discussed the problems with the
Common Core standards themselves, which aren’t superior
standards as some claim.
The third column discussed
the Common Core aligned content that parents should be
made aware of; and this column
will discuss the federal ties to
Common Core. Additionally,
our interview with Glenn Beck
can be viewed at www.youtube.
com and covers many important points not included in this
column.
HB3399 provides a safeguard against federal intrusion
over Oklahoma’s academic
standards and assessment decisions. The 10th Amendment
of the U.S. Constitution says
that all powers not delegated
to the U.S. by the Constitution
are reserved to the states or the
people.
Education was never meant
to be federally controlled given
the Founding Fathers’ desire
that states experiment and decide how best to address certain
issues on their own. With total
federal “control and uniformity,
states would find themselves
with unmanageable laws and
without any immediate recourse to modify those laws.
This would leave only an act of
Congress to correct problems,
meaning years lost in debate
before a solution was found.
The closer government is to
you, the more influence you
have and that’s why the 10th
Amendment matters!
Most objections to Common Core focus on federal
overreach as a “conspiracy theory” saying the initiative was
“state-led.” Common Core was
NOT state-led and definitely
not Oklahoma-led!
Like other cash-strapped
states that desperately needed
funds, Oklahoma and others plunged headlong into the
grand experiment of Common
Core for one reason...a greater
chance at securing a portion of
the $5 billion in federal “Race
to the Top” funds.
President Obama stated this
fact in his 2013 State of the
Union Address: “Four years
ago, we started Race to the Top,
a competition that convinced
almost every state to develop
smarter curricula and higher
standards.” In other words,
states were baited into allowing
a federal takeover of their educational standards for untested
standards.
In the spring of 2010, the
Oklahoma legislature agreed to
accept the Common Core standards and by law agreed they
couldn’t change the standards at
all, but could add 15 percent to
them (which no state would do
given the federal government
then allocating $300 million in
stimulus funds to develop model tests that would assess states
on the template standards). For states like Oklahoma
that adopted Common Core but
then weren’t awarded Race to
the Top federal funds, our state
education department took us
one step further by applying
for the No Child Left Behind
(NCLB) waiver. This was done
under the federal government’s
promise of more flexibility,
but what we got was more federal control. Maintaining the
waiver has since been used to
scare states into maintaining
compliance in more areas than
just Common Core. Oklahoma’s waiver hinges on the
2011 model of the Reading Sufficiency Act (RSA), A-F report
card system (A-F), Teacher and
Leader Effectiveness Evaluation system (TLE), and Achieving Classroom Excellence
(ACE) graduation requirements
WITHOUT ANY CHANGES
or we risk losing the waiver.
During my votes and support of warding off the quantitative side of TLE (where class
scores would impact a teacher’s
evaluation) and co-authoring
the RSA modification bill this
session (to allow more parental involvement in determining
whether a child can be promoted out of the third grade),
I never dreamed we’d have to
get the federal government’s
permission to okay those
changes. However, THAT’S
EXACTLY where we find our-
selves with our NCLB waiver
renewal.
We must conform to the
federal government’s dictates
in all of those areas or we’re
subject to losing the waiver. On behalf of the Obama administration, U. S. Secretary
of Education Arne Duncan
has threatened to not renew
Oklahoma’s NCLB waiver
this summer should the state
stop using the Common Core
standards, but TLE changes
are likely being discussed as a
reason for non-renewal given
what just happened in another
state. The state of Washington recently lost their NCLB
waiver over their unwillingness to evaluate their teachers
using test scores (similar to our
reluctance to implement the
quantitative side of TLE). The
local school principal, as the
curriculum leader, can identify
a good teacher regardless of a
quantitative metric. We must stand up against
Washington D.C now or we’ll
have to ask permission from
this point on with any minor
tweaks to our state’s education
policy

Additional Information for Lead
If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant
women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components
associated with service lines and home plumbing. Roundhill #4 is responsible for providing high
quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components.
When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead
exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or
cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested.
Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize
exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at
http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

Theft
Three air conditioners, a
deer stand and a potbelly stove
have been reported stolen from
a location in the Centrahoma
area. The theft was reported on
June 4.
Firearms, drugs and eluding
police officers
A warrant has been issued
for the arrest of a 30-year-old
Coalgate man following both a
high-speed vehicle pursuit and
a foot pursuit the night of May
30.
Sheriff investigator Jarel
Bailey said the vehicle pursuit
of a black Ford Mustang
convertible driven by Jessie
Odell Breger began shortly after
10:15 p.m. at the intersection
of O.C. Crossing and Roebuck
Road. Bailey said he and
deputy Jerry Ward were sitting
stationary at the intersection
when the Mustang approached
northbound on O.C. Crossing
at a high rate of speed.
Bailey said he attempted to
get behind the vehicle to check
the registration and followed
it about a mile before the
Mustang went over a hill and
the lights went off. When he
activated the emergency light
on his patrol unit, the Mustang’s
headlights came back on and
the car accelerated at a high
rate of speed.
Bailey said he pursued
the vehicle for several miles
at speeds in excess of 100
mph. Then the Mustang lost
control and struck a tree at the
intersection of Jordan Road
and Flagpole Road. As Bailey
approached the Mustang in his
patrol unit, he saw a white male
running away from the vehicle.
The man turned and looked at
him from a distance of about
ten feet before jumping a fence
and going into the woods.
The deputy pursued the man
by foot a short distance into
the wooded area, but the man
had disappeared and the foot
pursuit was suspended. In the
meantime, several officers from
the sheriff’s office, Oklahoma
Highway Patrol and Coalgate
Police Department arrived.
During inventory of the
Mustang, officers found a 6.5
caliber rifle, a .380 caliber
revolver, and two packages
containing a small amount of a
green leafy substance that field
tested to be marijuana.
The insurance verification
form in the console was in the
name of Jessie Odell Breger.
Bailey said he had dealt with
Breger many times in the past
and positively identified him to
be the man running away from
the Mustang. A sheriff’s office
dispatch log also shows that
Breger was driving the vehicle
on May 8 when the vehicle was
pulled over by a Coal County
deputy, according to Bailey’s
affidavit.
Breger was given a ten-year
suspended sentence in Blaine
County, Oklahoma, in 2011
for felony possession of illegal
drugs.
Drugs and resisting arrest
Carol Lynn Jones, 32, Atoka,
was charged May 27 with felony
possession of methamphetamine
and misdemeanor possession of
marijuana, drug paraphernalia
and resisting an officer.
A probable cause affidavit
filed by Undersheriff Bobby
Hatton states that Jones, also
known as Carol Lynn Layton
and Carol Lynn McCoy, was
arrested in Centrahoma the
night of May 26 when Hatton
and deputy Nicholas Davis
went to a Centrahoma residence
to serve an unrelated felony
warrant on a male subject.
Hatton said after speaking
to a man outside the residence
as to the whereabouts of the
wanted subject, he walked
by a vehicle that was parked
in the yard and saw a person
in the back seat area that was
attempting to hide. When he
opened the door of the vehicle
to make sure the person inside
wasn’t the man he was looking
for, he saw that it was Carol
Jones who had an active
warrant in Atoka County.
Hatton said as he was
attempting to remove Jones
from the vehicle, she was very
uncooperative and attempted
to get past him. She was
restrained inside the vehicle,
handcuffed and removed from
the vehicle. As she was being
removed, Hatton saw a bag in
the back seat that Jones said
was hers. Inside the bag were
13 syringes, three baggies
containing a crystal-like
substance, a pipe containing
a burned substance that field
tested positive for marijuana,
28 clear, unused plastic
baggies, and multiple other
drug paraphernalia items.
Jones has pleaded not guilty
to all charges and is scheduled
for a return court appearance
on June 19. Her bond was set
at $23,000.
Information filed by the
district attorney’s office shows
that Jones pleaded no contest
in 2007 in Coal County to
felony possession of controlled
substance near a school and
maintaining a place resorted to
by users of controlled drugs.
Assault and battery on
police officer
A Cottonwood man was
charged May 19 with assault
and battery on police officer
after several officers with
the Coal County Sheriff’s
Office, Oklahoma Highway
Patrol and Coalgate Police
Department responded to the
man’s residence where he was
reportedly threatening to kill
himself.
Deputy Jerry Ward and
Coalgate police officer Les
Carter first responded to the
residence and attempted to
enter the residence and speak
with Joshua Allen Hatton, but
Hatton closed the door and
told the officers if they tried to
come in he would kill himself.
Despite continued attempts
to coax Harris outside, Harris
refused to cooperate.
After other officers arrived
at the scene, entry was made
into the house and Harris was
subdued. During the encounter,
Hatton threatened several
officers with knives that he had
gotten out of a kitchen drawer,
according to Ward’s affidavit.
Hatton entered a plea of not
guilty during his initial court
appearance. He was released
on bond but failed to appear at
a June 5 preliminary hearing
conference. He was taken into
custody on a bench warrant and
is scheduled for a June 19 court
appearance.

Gov. Fallin Signs HB 3399 to Repeal
and Replace Common Core
—New Standards will be developed in Oklahoma and Increase Academic Rigor
OKLAHOMA
CITY—
Governor Mary Fallin on June
5 signed HB 3399, a bill that
replaces the Common Core
State Standards (CCSS) in
English and math with academic
standards to be designed by the
state of Oklahoma.
HB 3399 repeals the
adoption of CCSS and directs
the State Board of Education
to create new, more rigorous
standards by August 2016. For
the first time in state history,
the State Regents for Higher
Education, the State Board
of Career and Technology
Education, and the Oklahoma
Department of Commerce will
be asked to formally evaluate
those standards to determine
they are “college and career
ready.” While those new
standards are being written,
the state standards for English
and math will revert to the
Oklahoma Priority Academic
Student Skills (PASS) standards
used from 2003 to 2010.
HB 3399 passed with
overwhelming
bipartisan
support in both chambers, 7118 in the House and 31-10 in
the Senate.
Fallin signed the bill,
stating:
“We are capable of developing
our own Oklahoma academic
standards that will be better
than Common Core. Now is

the residence, a woman met him
at the door yelling for him to
help the victim, who was in the
bathtub trying to wash blood
off his face. The man told him
that Tyrone Buckley had hit him
several times in the face but he
didn’t know if Buckley had used
his fist or if he had something in
his hand.
The woman told Jett that
Buckley had made some advances
toward her and when she told her
boyfriend, he asked Buckley to
leave the residence but Buckley
refused.
That’s when her
boyfriend told Buckley, “Let’s
walk outside.” When they got
outside, Buckley started hitting
him in the face and hit him at
least 10 to 15 times, she said. She
started yelling at Buckley to leave
and he left on foot. The woman
yelled at a neighbor to call 911.
The victim was transported
to Mary Hurley Hospital for
treatment.
A warrant for Buckley’s
arrest was issued and served the
following day. At press time, he
was scheduled to make his initial
court appearance the afternoon of
June 10.

James Carl Prince and wife Donna with son Jamie, Tammie John, Denver and Shirley Rogers. If I
missed anyone I apologize. All help is greatly appreciated.
