Show at Fenders and Flames
A 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air,
a 1971 Chevrolet pickup and
a 2010 Harley Davidson were
the big winners in the 2014
Fenders and Flames show.
The show featured over 40
cars, trucks, and motorcycles
– and even one bus.
Fenders and Flames is
sponsored by the Coalgate Fire
Department. The 2014 show
held August 1 and 2 marked
the seventh annual event.

Calls Special Election
BEST OF SHOW TRUCK — Jay Symonds, Tulsa, took home the trophy for the Best of
Show Truck for his 1971 Chevrolet Cheyenne Super.
The Coalgate Board of Education on Monday night passed a
resolution calling for a Special Election in November to elect
a board member to fill an unexpired term for Seat No. 5 on the
Board.
The election will be held November 4 in conjunction with the
General Election. The filing period will be Monday, August 25,
Tuesday, August 26, and Wednesday, August 27.

El Nopal Mexican Grill holds grand opening in Coalgate

Miguel and Isabel Angel
are finally realizing two of
their dreams. First, to open
a Mexican restaurant in
Coalgate. Second, to live in
Coalgate.
Their first dream became
reality on June 14 when they
opened El Nopal Mexican
Grill on S. Broadway. As
to living in Coalgate, that
finally came to pass a few
days ago.
“I’ve been waiting four
years to come here,” said
Miguel. “Now, I have a
chance here. I’ve always
liked Coalgate and I’ve kept
an eye open (for the right
opportunity).”
Miguel explained that he
and Isabel have been living
in Wewoka where he and his
brother opened El Cazador
Mexican Restaurant three
and one-half years ago.
Isabel’s parents live in Lane,
he said, and they would
drive through Coalgate on
their way to Lane. He knew
he wanted to be here.
His opportunity came
when his father-in-law saw
that Esther’s Kountry Grill
was closed – and, as they
say, the rest is history.

and Human Services (HHS)
announced that Fort Sill in
Lawton, Oklahoma, would
be suspended as a temporary
housing facility for illegal
immigrant minors.
“I am glad to hear that Fort
Sill will no longer be used as a
temporary holding facility for
illegal immigrant children,”
said Mullin. “That
being
said,
it’s concerning that the
Administration could easily
choose to house these children
at Fort Sill again. It’s simply
not designed for this purpose,
and we need more certainty
that it will remain off limits.
“We must also remember
that our borders are still
not secure and our current
immigration laws are not being
enforced. Just last week, the
House passed legislation that
would give our border patrol
agents the resources they need
to secure our southern border.
“If we keep the status quo,
there will be little hope to end
the current crisis. We need the
President and Senate to join us
in this sentiment by moving
our bill forward.”

13, provides the opportunity

in Mexican food restaurants 15 years ago in Ft. Smith,
Arkansas.
Then they decided instead of working for other people
they would open their own restaurants – and they’ve done
just that.
The first Cazadorez opened in 2001 in Shawnee, Oklahoma,
followed by Atoka and then Seminole. They’re owned by
his brothers. Then Miguel and one of his brothers opened
El Cazador’s in Wewoka, and he and Isabel own El Nopal’s
in Coalgate. Altogether, the brothers have established five
restaurants in Oklahoma, plus one brother has a restaurant
in Missouri.
“I feel excited about being in Coalgate,” Miguel said.
“We’re going to try to keep the people happy so they don’t
have to spend gas driving to another town to eat Mexican
food.”
Miguel describes the food at Nopal’s as authentic Mexican.
Their menu includes everything from appetizers and salads,
burritos, tostadas, enchiladas and tacos to seafood shrimp
plates, combination dinners, grilled pollo vallarta, and steak
– just to name a few of the choices. If you still have room in
your tummy after your meal, you can treat yourself to fried
ice cream, a sopapilla or cheesecake chimichanga.
El Nopal’s is open Sunday through Thursday from 11:00
a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 11:00
a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The lunch menu is available from 11:00
a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Wesley Arthur Estep,
80, of Lehigh, OK, was laid
to rest on Friday, July 25,
2014.
Mr. Estep was born October 18, 1933, at Bowlegs,
OK, to William and Mamie
(Evans) Estep. He passed
away Tuesday, July 22,
2014, at Lehigh, OK.
Wesley was a graduate
of Coalgate High School
and married Anna Keeler on
April 4, 1955, at McAlester,
OK.
He proudly served his
country in both the U.S.
Army and U.S. Navy and retired with the U.S. Navy in
1975. Wesley had a passion
for boxing and was a twotime Golden Gloves champion while serving in the
Navy. His boxing skills and
talents earned him the nickname “Rocky.”
After returning home to
Lehigh, Wesley “Rocky”
Estep formed the Estep Boxing Club because he wanted
to train local boys to defend
themselves. He spent countless hours over a period of
several years training and
working with the boys in the
old Coalgate School gymnasium. He enjoyed all sports
but especially enjoyed boxing and baseball.
Mr. Estep was a member
of First Baptist Church in
Lehigh.
He is survived by his children, Pat Estep of Lehigh,
OK; Dale Estep of Coalgate,
OK; and Angela Wallace of
Colorado; siblings Wanda

Sarah Ollie (Dennis) Hooe.
He was born August 3, 1924
at Wardville, OK and passed
away August 2, 2014 at Coal
County General Hospital at
the age of 89, (just one day
before his 90th birthday). R.
E. was raised at Wardville
and lived near Wardville and
Kiowa and at his present resident for 54 years. He married
Joy Deen Cason October 16,
1953 in Ft. Worth, TX. R. E.
was always a cattle rancher
and had raised cattle since he
was fourteen. He raised Hereford cattle but in 2000 he decided that Black Baldy cattle
were “pretty good”. R. E.
also worked horses and colts
on his ranch. He worked in
road construction for thirty
years as a road grader operator. He traveled to many construction sights and made numerous friends along the way.
R. E. enjoyed Hereford Sales,
rodeos, collecting knives and
visiting with his grandchildren and enjoyed his great
grandchildren. He was a
member of the Coalgate United Methodist Church, a member of the American Hereford
Association, past member of
the Paint Horse Association
and Atoka County Farm Bureau Board.
Survivors include his wife
of nearly 61 years, Joy Hooe

30.
Burglary
A Tupelo man was charged
July 30 with burglarizing a
Centrahoma residence.
Billy Dean Warner, 22,
faces felony burglary in the
second degree for breaking
into a house and stealing
several items.
The victim told investigator
Jarel Bailey that he had been
in the hospital and when he
returned home he noticed
several items, including
medication, were missing.
He said he retrieved two of
the items, a mounted deer
head and a set of deer horns,
from an individual who told
him he received the items
from Warner.
Bailey’s probable cause
affidavit states that when he
spoke with Warner, Warner
admitted to breaking into
the house and taking a deer
head, deer horns, an air
compressor and a battery
charger. He traded them for
prescription medication, he
said.
Bailey said he went to
the home of the individual
from whom the deer head
and deer horns had been
retrieved and seized the
air compressor and battery
charger.

Matthew Mowdy received a congratulatory letter from
Valerie K. Couch, Dean and Professor of Law at Oklahoma City University School of Law for his academic performance during the Spring 2014 semester. He made

Woody also attended Tulsa
Welding School. He was
a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Vietnam Era.

Trolly Restaurant in Wapanucka. He also had worked
for the Ruth
Wilson Hurley Manor as
a dietician.

Voters who want to have absentee ballots mailed to them for
the August 26 Runoff Primary
Election should apply now, Coal
County Election Board Secretary Vicky Salmon said today.
Although the Election Board
can accept applications for absentee ballots until 5:00 p.m. on
Wednesday, August 20, Salmon
urged voters who want to vote by
absentee ballot to apply early.
The Democratic ballot for the
Runoff Primary includes the following:
Superintendent of Public Instruction – Candidates Freda Deskin and John Cox.
U.S. Senator (unexpired term)
– Candidates Jim Rogers and
Connie Johnson.
There will also be a Wapanucka Public Schools proposition
for voters in the Clarita precinct
only. There will not be a Republican ballot.
Absentee ballot application
forms are available at the Coal
County Election Board office located at 18 N. Michigan Street,
Coalgate, OK 74538 (behind
the post office). The forms also
are available at www.elections.
ok.gov.
Voters who have requested
an absentee ballot can track their
ballot at http://www.ok.gov/elections/Voter_Info/Online_Voter_
Tool/.
“At least two mail transactions must be made,” Salmon said.
“The County Election Board must
mail the ballot to the voter and the
voter must return the voted ballot
by mail.” Ballots must be in the
hands of the Election Board by
7:00 p.m. on Election Day in order to be counted.
Any registered voter eligible
to vote in the election may vote
by absentee ballot without stating
a reason, Salmon said. However,
a voter must be registered and reside at an address within the geographical boundaries of a school
district or a municipality to be eligible to vote in school district or
municipal elections.
“While anyone can vote absentee without giving a reason,
the law still provides several excuses, and it is to the advantage of
some voters to use one of them,”
Salmon said.
By stating one of the following reasons on their applications,
these voters can activate some
special conditions that make it
easier for them to use absentee
ballots. The reasons are:
Voters who are physically incapacitated and voters who care
for physically incapacitated persons who cannot be left unattended may vote absentee. They may
apply only by mail, by fax, or by
email.
Voters who are confined to
nursing homes in the county may
vote absentee. An absentee voting
board actually goes to the nursing
home a few days before the election, sets up a small polling place
and allows these persons to vote
under circumstances similar to
those at a regular precinct polling
place. They may apply only by
mail, by fax, or by email.
Military personnel, residents
of Coal County living overseas
and the spouses and dependents
of each group are eligible to receive absentee ballots. These voters may apply only by mail, fax,
or by email.
