A CLASSIC
UPDATE
Makeover subject: Amy Hill, 26, meetings and special events man-
ager, The Ritz-Carlton, Palm Beach. “I wanted a little refresher for
a more professional image, and to update my haircut and color to
something more modern and contemporary,” she says.
Where the magic happened: Eau Spa by Cornelia at The Ritz-Carlton,
Palm Beach, 100 S. Ocean Blvd., Manapalan; 561-533-6000; ritzcarlton.com/palmbeach or eauspa.com
Leading the transformation: Christine DiRocco, director of public relations, The Ritz-Carlton, Palm Beach
The salon’s goal: “Amy was recently promoted—she has always
been a strong supporter of the team, and now she is leading as a
manager,” says DiRocco. “We thought this would be a great way to
elevate her professional look and give her confidence.”
Y
our friends are too tactful to tell you this, but we’re not
(though we do mean well): that hairstyle you’ve had
since the 11th grade—well, it can use an update.
Some bangs might be nice, too. And would a few highlights
kill you? By the way, when was the last time you tried a new
lipstick color, eye shadow or shade of blush? ✽ We understand.
Whether it’s a drastic makeover or just a few cosmetic tweaks,

changing your looks can be intimidating—or even downright
frightening. But, if done properly, change can be a beautiful
thing. ✽ Don’t take our word for it. Check out the six brave women who threw caution to the wind, placing their looks in the
hands of Palm Beach County beauty professionals, letting them
tweeze, cut, color and otherwise transform. ✽ As you’ll see, the
risk was worth it. Mane event: Amy wanted a more modern look—but nothing too
outrageous. Stylist Allison Lutz gave her long bangs and cut layers
for movement and bounce. For her light brown hair, Lutz used
L’Oréal Majirel color in natural honey blonde to create highlights
around her face. She applied Kérastase conditioners before blowdrying her tresses smooth; she used a round styling brush around

the face and a flat paddle brush through the back of the hair, creating body and movement. Kérastase hairspray completed the look.
Amy’s skin was primed for makeup with three facials by
skin specialist Nancy Falero. Lead makeup specialist Colleen Murphy used a natural palette of taupe, dark browns, a smudge of black,
and a hint of shimmery gold on her eyes. Black LadyLash eyeliner
was applied to her top lids and brown on the bottom for definition,
and lashes by LadyLash were applied. Finally, some Touch of Light
bronzer and peach blush were used on her cheeks; peach lip color
created a natural look that complemented her skin tone.
About face:
Clothes call: “Amy being conservative, a black simple dress enhanced her look and showcased the great accessories she loved
wearing,” says DiRocco. All of Amy’s clothing and accessories are
from the hotel’s Eau Spa bEAUtique.
“The haircut and the highlights are fabulous… The
makeup was amazing. The whole thing was such a
unique experience.”

Six inches were snipped off Tabitha’s tresses; bangs and long
layers were added that worked with her natural waves “so
she has movement all the time,” explains Bliss Salon spa
director Michal Dildine. A Neuma moisture shampoo was
used to combat humidity and an Argan Oil Treatment for
additional sleekness. A polishing cream was applied; her hair
was blown out with a round brush before she was placed
under a dryer with large Velcro rollers. “Then we brushed it
out, and ran our fingers through it with a polishing cream
and hairspray,” says Dildine. KOKO chocolate brown was
used for her base color, as well as amber highlights.
FUN AND FLIRTY
Makeover subject: Tabitha Savage, 19, full-time
ocean engineering student. “I’m not the type to get
my hair and makeup done, and do the dress-up
thing, but I trusted them and just said, ‘go for it,’”
she says.

director
“We wanted to help smooth out
her skin, give her a hairstyle she could do without a
huge maintenance routine, and provide a fresh new
look for going out at night,” explains Dildine.
The salon’s goal:
About face: Tabitha’s eyebrows were waxed to
enhance her natural arch; her hairline was also
waxed and her skin was smoothed out with a
facial and some microdermabrasion. Debris
neutral cream-pressed powder foundation,
bronzer and beige shimmer were applied to her
fair skin for natural-looking color. Her cheekbones were contoured with pink blush and
mink eyeliner was applied for definition; natural-toned eye shadows were used, along with a
pop of greenish-blue to enhance her dark features and complement her dress. A neutral pink
lip liner and pink gloss were applied to complete the look, along with sheer gold to highlight her lower lip.
Tabitha’s dress was donated by My
Pink Closet in Boca Raton. “She can wear it to a
wedding or club, or throw on flip-flops and go to
brunch,” says Dildine. Her jewelry is available at
Bliss Salon | Spa.
Clothes call:
“This is a big change! My hair is more manageable now and I plan
to maintain this look.”

“The color didn’t work for her skin tone so we lightened it
and gave it dimension,” explains Adam Gray, owner of
Tyler Presley Salon. Working off Sheral’s brown base,
Goldwell color was used to create highlights and lowlights
for a multidimensional effect. Shuga Volumizing Mousse
and Shuga Gel Creme were applied to her naturally
wavy mane, which was then blow-dried straight using a
medium brush with “lots of heat and stretching to
straighten it,” he says. “Then we used a flatiron to smooth
it out and create a silky look.”

owns the salon with partner Gloria Segura)
“A total change,” says Gray. “We
especially wanted to change her hair from its ‘blah’
color to something exciting, and from the ‘just
there’ haircut to a fresh, new style.”
The salon’s goal:
About face:
Makeup artist FenaMarie Brooks ap-
plied a medium concealer under Sheral’s eyes and
on any trouble spots. To create a glamorous evening
look, she used Maybelline eye shadows in smoky
black and gray, and accentuated her eyes with a
MAC black pencil and black mascara. Lancôme
bronzing Aplum blush complemented Sheral’s hair
and skin tone, MAC plum lip pencil and light pink
gloss gave her a pretty pout.
Clothes call: The salon helped Sheral choose the
perfect ensemble—from her own closet. “We liked
the black outfit because it flattered her figure and
brought out the sexiness in her hair, making the
color pop even more,” Gray explains. Her outfit
was complemented with jewelry and accessories by
the salon’s Bella Blondes Boutique.
“The haircut was the most drastic change for me. I have 60
students, and at the end of the first week some of them had
copied my cut. I was like a trend-setter!”

To add brightness and draw attention to her eyes, hair colorist
Aaron Knox used Goldwell color to take Kristen’s natural base
two levels deeper. She added lowlights and highlights in the
same color family for dimension. Stylist Tj Knox gave Kristen's hair
a variation of a graduated bob, and added soft bangs to give
the classic cut a more modern appeal, and to provide
movement and texture. He applied Antidote as a foundation,
and a bit of Kérastase Oléo-Relax to smooth her hair; he then
blow-dried it straight using a Denman brush, followed by a
small round brush. After using a flatiron, he applied Label.m
Shaper pomade, to create a ‘piece-y’ textured look.

sun-kissed style
Kristen Metelsky, 19, assistant at Sky Salon & Spa. “I needed an overall
new look, including a new hairstyle, which was
a mess before. And new makeup—something
to bring out my eyes,” she says.

Leading the transformation:
Isabel Cassella,
manager
“To bring her cut and style up
to date and have her color enhance her skin
tone, eyes and haircut,” explains Cassella.
The salon’s goal:
About face: To create Kristen’s freshly tanned
glow, makeup artist Michael Brunetto applied
a light tinted moisturizer followed by face and
bronzing powders to her cheeks. To play up
Kristen’s eyes, he created a smoky effect using
shadows in shades of gold, bronze and white
gold, along with a waterproof liner. He applied
invisible band lashes using surgical glue for a
neat, perfect look, and contoured her brows
with a colored powder. He finished with a neutral lip liner and color.
Clothes call: Kristen’s clothing and jewelry are
from the salon’s Jewels of Sky Boutique. Her
light-colored T-shirt complements her newly
‘tanned’ complexion and “the scarf we chose
highlights her face, while a silver heart necklace is youthful yet sophisticated,” says boutique owner Lynn Balbinder. The result: a fresh
romantic daytime look.
“I am very pleased with everything. It’s amazing – I have gotten so
many compliments everywhere I go.”

Kaela wanted to keep her length, so Sze added long
layers to utilize her hair’s natural waves and movement.
“This way she can realistically create the same look at
home,” explains Philipe Sze, owner of Studio Z. Sze used a
foil technique to highlight her tresses, going heavier in the
front to frame her face, and more subtle toward the back
and crown. He used smoothing cream in her full hair, and
blow-dried it using medium heat and a round brush. “The
goal was to emphasize her hair as something she could
touch and that her boyfriend can play with.”

Sze, owner
The salon’s goal: “To bring out the best she had to
offer. Her hair color was very drab—she hadn’t had
it done in eight months,” Sze explains. “So we
wanted to freshen her up, brighten her hair color
and enhance her natural beauty.”
About face: Makeup artist Allyse Schensnol
chose neutral earth tones, “because Kaela is
naturally pretty,” she explains. “I didn’t need to
use crazy colors.” She applied Estée Lauder
primer and a Chanel foundation to her skin,
followed by Too Faced pink blush and matching gloss. She cleaned up her eyebrows, and
used Too Faced champagne shadow on her lids,
with purple as an accent color.
Kaela is wearing her own dress. “I
told her to wear something that’s going to look
good and to utilize spring colors,” Sze says. “She
has a good fashion sense.”
Clothes call:
“My hair looks lighter and fuller and has so much more body.
I really love it.”

To achieve a golden blonde color, Payson received
caramel and soft golden highlights. “I wanted to achieve
a more natural look for her face and skin tone, and didn’t
want it to be too ‘stripe-y,’” explains Juliet Ciambrone,
owner of Juliet Salon. “Soft and pretty is the trend right
now.” Ciambrone gave her a long bob with an interior
layer, which released weight and created movement and
texture. Using Kérastase and Davines styling products, she
blow-dried Payton’s hair using a round brush, and used a
curling iron to create a soft wavy look—minus any frizz.

GO-TO GLAMOUR
Payson Benner, 21, student. “I
was really hoping for a better haircut. My hair is really thick and it’s hard for me to get a cut that I like,”
she says. “And I needed better color.”

Leading the transformation:
Juliet Ciambrone,
owner
The salon’s goal: “I was trying to create an easy
glamour look, and a style that could be put together without much effort, where she could easily go from day to night,” explains Ciambrone.
About face:
Makeup artist Katie Hultgren used
Sephora, MAC and TIGI products. Hultgren
blended black shadow in the creases of Payson’s
eyelids to create drama, and used soft purple
on the outer edges to make them pop. Individual lashes were applied to create even more
drama, and her brows were darkened with a
powder to frame her face. A tint was applied as
a foundation, a translucent power was used to
set it and a rose-colored blush and bronzer
added pretty color. Light pink matte lips finished the look.
Payson is wearing a black dress
with a simple line from American Apparel.
“We wanted something sophisticated and
trendy, and where she could simply change her
shoes and go from day to evening,” says Ciambrone. “And it looked flawless on her.” O
Clothes call:
“I love the result, especially my hair—it’s really easy to style now.
And the color looks really natural.”
