Teen Institute: Serving the
Community
Martin Luther King Jr said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing
for others?” A group of teenagers from Teen Institute at Lake High School have been working to
answer that question this year.
“I’ve had the privilege of working alongside some great teens as we helped serve food at the
Refuge of Hope in Canton, sorted clothes at the Hartville Mennonite Thrift, and did landscaping
with Habitat for Humanity this year. These students worked hard and were polite and respectful
to everyone,” said Teen Institute Teen advisor Sharyl Gregerson.
Teen Institute members also completed a Red Ribbon campaign in October to encourage high
school students to stay away from drugs, and wrote and presented skits at Uniontown and Lake
Elementary Schools about not bullying, not giving in to peer pressure, not smoking or taking
drugs, not cheating, and about being kind to others.
“We thank staff and students at both elementary schools for allowing our group to come and for
being a fantastic audience as we shared our skits. We hope we were a positive influence!” added
Mrs. Gregerson. Anyone who is interested in being a part of Teen Institute this fall should contact
Mrs. Gregerson at the high school.

Happy
Campers!
Several students shared what
they loved best part about
camp:
Sixth grade students enjoyed a
fun-filled learning experience
at Camp Y-Noah on April
26-28, 2016. Students were
blessed with dry weather
on the first day and rain that
cleared by afternoon on the
second day, allowing them to
do all scheduled activities.
Tiona Rossano – I learned how to take a fish
off a hook.
EmmaLouise Earles – During horseback
riding, we made the horse trot.
Gavin Schrock – I learned the ancient art of
hand whistling from Hal Walker.
During the day, students went
canoeing, found specimens in
pond life, developed their archery skills, caught a tremendous number of fish in Lake Y-Noah, and conducted
a picture scavenger hunt in nature. Students also learned about scat during animal tracks class, rode horses
or climbed a wall, and made banana boats during cooking class. Sciddles, a class taught by high school
counselors, was a favorite activity as students learned decision-making skills and showed their acting abilities
during the infamous “house is on fire” skit.
Nighttime was the setting for ethnic dancing. The beautiful weather allowed the students to enjoy doing
Denmark’s Seven Jumps and the Cotton-Eyed Joe outdoors on the tennis courts. In addition, students loved
singing Home in Ohio with Hal Walker, and learned about many instruments used around the world. Making
s’mores and learning new songs during the evening campfire was another enjoyable activity for the students.
Elizabeth Ballway – It was really funny to
watch my friend freak out when we were looking
through the microscopes during pond life and
she found a nematode.
Mason Davis – My favorite class was
SCIDDLES because I won the scissors activity!
Liz Sharpe – During orienteering, we learned
how to navigate around with a compass.
Michael Harris – I learned to catch fish
without a reel.

World of STEM!
DAR Winners
Seventh graders Mackenzie Bozman and Maddie
Sladen were recently recognized by the Daughters
of the American Revolution (DAR) as winners in
the Junior American Contest. Maddie’s short story
entitled “The Perfect Family” won first place at
the local competition. Mackenzie’s poem entitled
“Celebrate America” won first place at the local and
state competitions, and third place in the national
competition.
They were recognized May 4, 2016, at the local DAR
Junior American Contest recognition ceremony,
where they both shared their work. Congratulations
to Mackenzie and Maddie on a job well done!
LMS students have been actively involved in various
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
events. Saturday, April 30, 2016, students attended
The University of Akron for STEM Career Day,
which was hosted by Goodyear. Students had the
opportunity to learn more about STEM careers and
engage in fun hands on activities and engineering
design challenges. Nicholas Bradcovich, Tessa Miller, and Audrey Warnick won first place in the group
design challenge competition.
Approximately 40 students from Lake Middle School’s eighth grade Technology Education class advanced to
the Second Annual Northeast Ohio Junior Solar Sprint Race held at Cleveland State University Wednesday, May
18, 2016. Other middle school students from Westlake, North Olmsted, and Brecksville attended this special
event. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Junior Solar Sprint (JSS) program is a classroom-based, hands-on
STEM activity for sixth-eighth grade students. JSS student teams apply math, science, and engineering design
to construct and test solar-powered cars that are then raced on a 20-meter track.
The Lake Middle School Science & Engineering Club also
geared up for the Gravity Racing Challenge. This event, hosted
by the Soap Box Derby of Akron, allowed a team of 10 students
to build a car and race it down Derby Downs hill. The group,
led by Christina Jones and Staci Lisy, assembled the car over
several weeks. The team then designed the shell and created
the Team Day shirts. The team was excited to compete at this
year’s event held Saturday, May 14, 2016!

Vehicle Day
In May, Lake Elementary hosted
a Vehicle Day which gave fourth
and fifth grade students the
opportunity to participate in early
career exploration. Elementary
students
are
particularly
interested in the different types
of vehicles that are used in some careers in order for people
to perform their jobs. Along with the promotion of career
development standards in classroom guidance, we involved
the community by holding this event.
Vehicle Day allowed the students in our building to learn about
careers that use specific vehicles to perform their job duties,
and to talk with professionals about their daily routine. They
also explored the vehicles, and gained a better understanding
of what it would be like to work in that particular field.
Lake Elementary students and staff extend a BIG THANK YOU to all those listed below who took time out of
their busy schedule to volunteer their time to make this day special for us!!!
• Hartville Fire Department (Firetruck and Ambulance)
• Uniontown Post Office (Mail Truck)
• Lake Township (Snow Plow and Dump Truck)

Kindergarten
Kindergarten constructed vehicles and instruments. Before building
the vehicles, we spent time discussing and exploring the differences
between 2D and 3D shapes, and how we can use multiple shapes to
create something new. Students then planned out what they would
build, how they would build it, and shared their final product with their
peers.
Before creating their own instruments, students explored the different
ways sound is created through vibrations. They planned out what they
would build, what materials they would use, and did a fantastic job
creating string, wind, and percussion instruments.
First Grade
What a great year we had here at Uniontown
Elementary! Our theme this year was “Blue
Streaks are Bucket Fillers!” During the summer
months students can continue our focus of
“kindness to all!” Here are suggestions for
activities students can do during the summer:
• Plant a garden.
• Help a neighbor with a project.
• READ! READ! READ! READ! READ! READ! READ!
• Get outside and play!
• Journalize your vacation.
• Go camping…..even if it is only in the backyard!
• Make a scrapbook.
• Go fishing.
• Have a garage sale – donate money earned to a
charity.
• Ride bikes….with a helmet!
• Join the Stark County Library Summer Reading
Program.
• Take a hike at Quail Hollow State Park.
• Go to an Akron “Rubber Ducks” baseball game
• Go swimming, play baseball, play soccer (use
sunscreen!)
• Limit all screen time!
• Have a lemonade stand.
Have a safe and relaxing summer!
Summer Hours
The office will be closed from June 3 - August 2,
2016. Summer office hours will begin August 3,
and will be from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. Please contact
school secretary Denise Caruso at 330-8774298 or [email protected] to make an
appointment for new student registration.
The Aultman Foundation visited our first grade classrooms
to teach lessons about bike safety. Each student was
presented with a bike helmet to take home. Thank you
Aultman Hospital! The students love the bike helmets!
The students did a research report on a wild animal and
presented their animal and its habitat in a variety of ways.
Students enjoyed learning
about different animals, and
showing their knowledge and creativity through shoe box habitats and/or posters.
In Art class, they created their animal out of clay. Thank you Charity Hockenberry!
First grade students also went on a field trip to see the play Mary Poppins put on by
the Canton Players Guild. Thank you to our PTO for providing this opportunity to
our students and teachers.
Second Grade
Second graders learned about famous Americans
by rotating to each second grade classroom to learn
about people who impacted history including Amelia
Earhart, Molly Pitcher, Babe Ruth, Neil Armstrong
and Helen Keller. Students also spent time researching
a famous American, and creating a baseball card,
Powerpoint, or prezi presentation about that person.
Second grade also enjoyed programs by guest speakers,
including one by a guest from RealEyes who spoke
about eye health and care. Mark Kreitz taught second
graders about how worms help the environment.
Students observed worms in their environment,
learned interesting facts about them, and saw worms
in action in the compost pile in our science garden.
Students also
studied ants,
and watched
them tunnel in
gel
habitats.
Students
enjoyed
the
hands-on unit
about animal
habitats
and
how animals
can change our
environment.
Third Grade
It is amazing to see the growth of each child and
we are blessed to have one of the best careers in the
world! We celebrated their achievements at our Third
Grade Recognition. Mrs. Bishop did an amazing job
preparing students for this special night.
We had several field trips in May. First, we went
to Walsh University to culminate our habitat unit.
Students from Walsh visited us earlier in the year and
set up interesting science stations, providing students
with interactive lessons. We are fortunate to have this
collaboration in place.
Students also visited our friends at Lake Elementary.
This trip allowed students to ask questions about
fourth grade, see the building, and meet teachers.
Finally, students walked through Uniontown to learn
about our history. We couldn’t plan this day without
the help of several community members who shared
their insights to the past. Thank you Mr. & Mrs.
Pressler, Mrs. Heisler, Mr. Pressler, Ms. Werab, Mrs.
Lavy, and Mr. Miller.
Be sure to check out our most recent photos on the

Third Grade
Third Graders at Hartville Elementary completed the first AIR state
mandated test and did well; the testing was completed over four
days and students were prepared. They visited Walsh University and
attended an outdoor learning lab directed by Dr. Jennifer Clevinger,
a biology professor at Walsh who has been offering this opportunity
to our students for almost five years. Students learned about life in a
creek by looking through microscopes, how various insects eat their
food, the anatomy of plants, and were given a campus walking tour.
Third grade at Hartville also collects pop tabs to donate to the Akron
Ronald McDonald House. They collected many pounds of tabs
this year, and Meri Skiera from the house came and explained how
donations are helpful to those in need. Money earned from the pop
tabs will go to purchasing new playground equipment for the Akron
Ronald McDonald house.
We coordinated with our art teachers, Joni Susa and Jamie Stegner,
on a building project based on our new school. Students learned
geometry skills and vocabulary, which they used in art class to design and build new, innovative classrooms for
our school building. Our third grade teachers wish the classes the best of luck in fourth grade!
Second Grade
First Grade
Our first graders teamed up with fifth graders from Lake Elementary
to explore their Native American projects, so our students learned
about houses Native Americans lived in, the food they ate, how they
communicated, and where they lived. Fifth graders also helped us with
our animal habitat projects. First graders chose an animal to research
and report on, then fifth graders helped them gather information about
their animals. We held a first grade open house sharing their projects
with families, and first graders also presented a musical program led by
Natalie Deckerd. Thank you, Mrs. Deckerd!
Walsh University students
visited and used hands on activities to reveal ways seeds travel.
We tested which seeds float, fly in the wind, taste the sweetest,
and are difficult to open. Finally, we took a field trip to Quail
Hollow, and while exploring it students saw different plants and
animals. Students talked about how different plants spread to
different areas of the park based on their seed knowledge. They
also discussed animals living in various habitats, and why this
is the best habitat for these animals.
In second grade, each student chose a president to
research and present during a Second Grade Hall
of Presidents event. They studied their president
for two weeks gathering facts about their early
life, presidency, contributions and interesting
facts, and later life. The children then developed
a speech for sharing their meaningful data. For
the culminating activity, each pupil chose how
to dress or add props when representing their
Commander In Chief. The second grade learners
enjoyed sharing their interesting information with
their families and friends.
We thank all of our parent who helped make this trip fantastic!
What a perfect way for students to see and put into action all they learned this spring!
Kindergarten
Kindergarteners enjoyed memorable field trips to the Akron Zoo and the
Hartville Chocolate Factory! Thanks to our PTO for funding our trip to
the zoo. We learned about living things, and enjoyed a program led by
a presenter from Stark Parks. (Starkparks.jpg) The Hartville Chocolate
Factory shared their knowledge of chocolates, and provided treats.
Please stop by and thank them for their generosity to our kindergarteners.
Students are excited for summer, but will miss friends and teachers.
Have a wonderful summer! Support growth made by your child by
having your child complete the summer packet sent home, as well as
reading to your child. Have your child bring the packet back in the fall
for a special treat! Thank you for your support this year!
