Thesis project for I.S.I.A 2009/2010
“LEGS. Seeking balance between art and design”.
My thesis was based on the design of two coffee tables and a chair for Moroso, a company
with a keen interest in contemporary art. The starting point for the project came from my
own artistic research- for some time I have been making artworks exploring the subject
of human legs. For the design project I took my artistic research and reformulated the
conceptual and formal aspects to address a series of objects that we normally expect to
have legs, expanding this notion in order to create a final product which brings together
artistic concept and design.
Presupposti e Concept
Il primo passo per la progettazione del bicchiere è stato l’analisi dell’argomento
stesso della manifestazione. Infatti, questo bicchiere deve rappresentare i
trent’anni di attività di Convivium Firenze.
Una vita strato su strato
Riflettendo sulla gastronomia e sui prodotti di Convivium Firenze, il primo
spunto per la progettazione è arrivato dal mondo della natura. Il modo in
cui la natura esprime la propria età è sicuramente molto affascinante: in un
albero la stratificazione del tronco crea disegni concentrici simili ad anelli, che
testimoniano la sua vita.
Se un bicchiere fosse un tronco, potrebbe dimostrare la propria età allo stesso
modo, strato su strato.

L’idea degli anelli concentrici, non si ferma solo al concetto di età.
Osservando il comportamento dei liquidi, al cui contenimento il bicchiere
è destinato, tali forme risultano fortemente ricorrenti. Tuttavia, essendo
il liquido, per definizione, informe e in continua evoluzione, è importante
che il suo contenitore ne rappresenti al meglio la natura.

Coerentemente con le analisi svolte sulle proprietà degli elementi naturali presi in esame e il concept individuato,
è stato possibile passare alla concretizzazione della forma. Il progetto prende vita dallo sviluppo tridimensionale
degli anelli concentrici, che sembrano essere derivati da una sorta di “carotaggio” (come quello che viene fatto
anche nei formaggi per deciderne la stagionatura). Sembra quasi che il bicchiere e gli anelli interni che lo
caratterizzano siano il risultato dell’estrazione di un campione di vetro.
E’ così che avviene la creazione di un vortice artificiale in cui far convogliare il liquido informe, creando
l’illusione di un perenne e naturale movimento.
Infine, “CarotAge” è un nome ironico e significativo, adatto a coordinare l’apparenza e il concetto
che sta alla base del prodotto. Anche il carattere tipografico del nome riprende le caratteristiche
dell’oggetto. Il bicchiere, dal duplice utilizzo (infatti è adatto a contenere vino ma anche
acqua, da cui i colori rosso e blu), appare morbido e sinuoso, pur avendo una struttura
geometrica di semplici linee spezzate (visibili in sezione).

Il nome e la forma

Le due declina�ioni del progetto
Il progetto del bicchiere presenta due declinazioni, una delle quali è personalizzata dal logo di
“Convivium Firenze”. Il logo, di cui è stato preso solo il blocco di logo e logotipo, per evitare una
pesantezza visiva, è applicato mediante stampaggio a sabbia, in modo tale da essere discreto
e in armonia con la superficie del bicchiere.

in Florence in November 2010.

National design competition
New Form 2011
The design of the Balmoon tap is derived
from a sphere, a simple but enigmatic
shape which calls to mind the mantle of
the moon.
“Pieces” is a sculptural project which was inspired by the idea of creating a space where
art could be in direct contact with people. The
physical elaboration of this idea derives from
the shape of Matteo Thun’s iconic cup design
for Illy Caffè.
The handle is separated from the cup and finds
its own independent space within the project.

Chagall Crib is a crib for use in the home. It is
inspired by the form of a wheelbarrow. Chagall
Crib has been designed to be easy to move in
the tight spaces of the domestic environment,
creating a new way to interact and use a baby’s
crib. The minimalistic development of the form
using the repeated motif of the circle, gives
Chagall Crib a pleasing appearance which is
further harmonised through the use of colour.
Chagall Crib has been designed with the aim
of giving life to a new object, which is capable
of renewing through form and innovating
through function.

BEEPOP – design for foldable silicon mat to use on the sink for draining

The living module E_Habitat is the result of the
search to contain all the functions necessary
for living in an emergency situation in the
smallest possible footprint. The project has
been designed to be transported within a 40
foot container.
E_Habitat offers numerous advantages: thanks
to its modular construction, it’s structure can
easily be enlarged, it can host up to four
people and can be assembled in nine steps.
The living module also includes a roof made
of solar panels which are wired into the entire
structure through the walls.

RESPIRO
“RESPIRO” is a coffee table with small
dimensions reflecting on the idea of finding
a different place to the traditional vases of
flowers that commonly are positioned above
the floor. Everything revolves on the idea of
contrast between the “container” in plexi glass
and the content, which in my project consists
of land and succulent plants. In the overall
view of the object, it is interesting to the stark
contrast between the
artificial (plexiglass and steel) and natural
(soil, plants), contrast that is going to melt in
the “breathing” of the plants at the center of
the structure. The plants, inserted inside the
box, with time growing up and accompany the
conversations between people with a poetic
touch different.

“PING LOVE PONG“. Tool to manage the
dialogue couple psychotherapy.
The tool is designed for use during the course
of a couple psychotherapy, particularly in the
early stages of the therapeutic process. The
type of disorder referred to by the object is
centered around the psychological block that
often couples suffer when they are forced to
verbalize their discomfort personal therapist.
The goal of the project is to enable the
verbalization of personal distress that each
member of the couple carries within it through
the use of images and sounds. It is therefore
necessary to design a new tool that is able
to engage more directly couples and facilitate
the therapist’s intervention in the most critical
moments. The psychotherapist, in specific
moments with the couple, the object will use
to start a verbal communication that provides
the interaction between members of the couple
and yields, through the projection of images
and sounds, clinical information on the report
to be used later in therapy. Moreover, thanks to
its structure, the object enables the therapist
to manage also the pair simultaneously in all
different phases: the initial introspection until
direct dialogue.
