Unimog U 4000/U 5000 – exceptional off-road: It provides
outstanding off-road manoeuvrability for difficult jobs
and is fitted with unique heat protection ex factory. The
flexible ladder-type frame with tubular cross members
guarantees extremely high stability on the road – and extreme torsional flexibility off-road. The double three-point
mounting for bodies and attachments allows the frame to
twist in off-road conditions without exerting additional
stress and strain on the mounted bodies and attachments.
Unimog U 20 – compact: It gets through almost everywhere. Its compact dimensions and slender width
of only 2.15 m make sure it can get to any job easily.
Permanent four-wheel drive, portal axles and coil springs

The Unimog Concept
Unimog Technology
Whether muddy forest humus or scree: with the Unimog you always arrive at your destination. This is due to its
chassis concept – not to be found with any other manufacturer worldwide – which ups your operating strength
into a totally different category: exceptional ground clearance, favourable angles of approach and departure,
great stability, extremely good climbing ability, excellent traction and a top speed of up to 90 km/h on paved
roads.

Portal axles provide outstanding ground clearance –
Even when the going gets tough, all four wheels stay in contact with the ground all the time – thanks to the long shock courses of
even over difficult terrain
the coil-sprung suspension
Portal axles. The Unimog’s portal axles are designed with
the axle tubes and differentials higher than the centre of the
wheel. This means you benefit from unusually high ground
clearance and can easily drive over even larger obstacles.
By having a reduction gear at the gear hub, the full torque
takes effect on the ground providing increased traction
when crossing difficult country. In addition, the axle steering
guide with integrated stabilizers gives the Unimog great directional stability and reduces any tendency to roll and pitch.
Four-wheel drive. The Unimog comes with four-wheel
drive technology which cannot be compared with any
other system. On the one hand, engageable positive
differential locks in both axles ensure minimum slippage
and maximum traction; on the other hand, the long
shock courses of its coil-sprung axle suspension ensure
that all four wheels always have surface contact.

Optimal working and driving speeds for any kind of job with the Unimog’s up to 16 forward and 14 reverse gears
More safety for both vehicle and crew: Its heat shield and self-protection
system allow the Unimog to drive right up to the source of the fire
Single tyres. Unlike normal four-wheel drive trucks
with twin tyres fitted at the rear axle, the Unimog has
four single tyres. The rear wheels always run in the
compressed tracks created by the front wheels. This
provides higher traction and less rolling resistance due
to the interlocking of the tyre profiles. The large surface
contact area of the tyres is easy on the soil by providing
lower ground pressure, thus reducing field damage.
Transmission. The full-synchromesh electro pneumatic
transmission (Telligent®) featuring eight forward and
six reverse gears is renowned for being extremely easy
to use, smooth running, long life span, great efficiency
and being perfectly designed for a wide variety of jobs.
The synchromesh quick reversing system EQR (Electronic
Quick Reverse) makes it easy to change directions
q uickly, for instance when rocking free off-road. And a
special off-road transmission with an additional eight
forward and reverse gears guarantees maximum traction
at very low speeds from 1 to 30 km/h. As an option, the
automated transmission AutomaticShift is available for
product ranges U 300/U 400/U 500 and U 4000/U 5000.
Perfect for complete concentration when driving on-road,
but with a manual mode for flexible off-road driving.
Coil-sprung axle suspension and thrust tube technology ensure that
all four wheels stay on the ground

Chassis Concept
Perfect for extreme terrain
The unique off-road capabilities of the Unimog U 4000/U 5000
still have to be surpassed: Its high performance frame concept
provides great rigidity for on-road driving and enormous torsional flexibility off-road; its superior four-wheel drive concept
with thrust tubes and positive differential locks for both axles
together with its portal axles ensure outstanding ground clearance. Whether in woods or deep snow, through floods, bogs or
scree – the Unimog makes sure that crew, materials and heavy
equipment get to the work location fast and safely.

Safe over any ground: The Unimog reaches any location with its great angles of approach and departure both in front and behind,
Tirecontrol allows you to adjust the tyre pressure to suit the terrain simply
its climbing capabilities up to 100 % and fording ability up to 1.20 m
by pressing a switch while driving
Torsional flexibility. The unsurpassed off-road capabilities
of the sturdy Unimog U 4000/U 5000 lie in the torsional
flexibility of its frame with tubular cross members. It guarantees very stable driving on the road, but at the same time
provides high torsional flexibility during off-road driving.
This is provided by three-point mounting for cab, engine
and transmission as well as defined installation points for
attachments and bodies all of which allow the Unimog to
cope with torsional flexing of up to 30° without difficulty.
And the frame’s short overhang comes into its own over steep
angles of approach and departure. The low curb weight of
the chassis means it can carry heavy payloads of up to 8.2 t.
Fording. Water courses or flooded areas are no obstacle
for the Unimog U 4000/U 5000. In the standard version
it has a fording depth of up to 80 cm due to its thrust
tube technology, air-intake pipe at the height of the cab
roof and waterproof technical units. And the optional
fording system allows you to confront water depths of up
to 1.20 m with no trouble at all and perfectly safely as
transmission and axles are protected from seeping water
and powdery sand.
Tyre pressure control system. Just one more advantage
for off-road operation with the Unimog U 4000/U 5000:
the optionally available tyre pressure control system
Tirecontrol. While on the move it is possible to adjust the
tyre pressure to the type of ground, in one or both axles:
Easily and quickly, at the push of a button. Reducing
the tyre pressure enlarges the tyre’s surface contact,
prevents sinking into soft ground and improves traction.
This is easier on the soil, saves fuel and also distinctly
increases the life of the tyres.

Hydraulic System and Auxiliary PTOs
Safety
Hydraulic system. The powerful hydraulic system has
a working pressure of up to 240 bar which can run an
oil-driven engine or external controls. This means that it
can be used for running permanent consumers as well as
for activating implement operations via valves fitted on
the implement. Standardised couplings make swapping
connections easy and fast without making a mistake.
As an option, the front attachment area can be fitted with
winch brackets for attaching a hydraulic front winch.

with a high speed PTO for use with commercially
available hydraulic pumps. This means that it can be
used as a compact off-road mobile crane for rescue or
relief operations or be used with an attached excavator.
A nother very high speed PTO is available for connecting
fire extinguisher pumps or similar units. The auxiliary
PTOs can be switched on and off when the Unimog itself
is not running.
The U 4000/U 5000 can provide special equipment ex factory including PTOs suitable for setting up heavy cranes

More safety ex factory. The Mercedes-Benz heat shield for
the Unimog U 4000/U 5000 includes a safety package specially developed for fire services. It enables the Unimog to
drive close to the source of the fire or even briefly through
the fire itself. This means that the Unimog comes up to the
high standards required by the European Fire Services
Standards EN 1846, Class S3 for heavy off-road vehicles.
These standards are already taken into account, tested
and approved during the development and construction of
the vehicles – that is one-stop-shopping of the very best

and technical components of the Unimog U 4000/U 5000
have been given additional mechanical protection.
The Mercedes-Benz heat shield includes special fire-proof
sheathing for all essential electric and pneumatic functions,
hydraulic leads and fuel lines. Also, all the important units
1.A steel shell protects the AdBlue® tank and catalytic
converter from mechanical damage from outside.
2.The air dryer is shielded by a steel casing. It is also
installed at a higher level to give it greater protection
from mechanical damage from outside.
3.All the brake components are also mechanically
protected all round. They are arranged so that they are
easier to access with a permanently mounted body.
The brake relay valve has been given a metal casing
instead of the standard synthetic casing.
The rear air chambers have been moved from the frame
supports to under the brake unit supports and are
protected by a metal casing. An additional advantage:
the new position gives body manufacturers a freer
hand when designing the body.
4.The battery is protected in a steel casing from heat and
mechanical damage from outside.
5.All the connections for important electric and pneumatic
functions, hydraulic leads and fuel lines are either made
of steel or provided with special fireproof sheathing.

A direct comparison between the standard cab and the enlarged cab
Relaxed working. The short-bonnet cab of the Unimog
U 4000/U 5000 provides a fantastic all-round view –
especially when driving cross-country. The cab is positioned behind the engine and its three-point mounting
on rubber elements cushions vibration and jolts. As the
seating is positioned behind the front axle a comfortable
trip is guaranteed even over bad roads and rough country.
12
Lower or larger. Because of its low height, the standard
driving cab is perfect for driving through low access
heights. An enlarged cab is available as an option and it
provides even more stowage space and freedom of movement; the seats can be adjusted individually and the
completely level cab floor makes it easier to pass from
one side to the other. Both cabs can be fitted either
with individual or double seats.
The cab can be fitted with optional air-conditioning
The double cab of the Unimog U 4000/U 5000 provides enough room for up to seven people
Clear to read, easy to operate: The Unimog U 4000/U 5000
instrument panel is firmly installed on the steering
column, making it really easy to read irrespective of the
driver’s position. The clearly structured information system for the driver provides all the important information
he needs. All the operating controls for transmission and
implement operation are installed in logical clusters on
the central console, easy to reach and easy to understand.
Being as versatile as possible on the job. The optional
round roof hatch of the Unimog cab makes the crew’s job
safer as it allows them to fight the fire directly from the
safety of the vehicle. The double seat at the rear of the cab
is simply folded down and serves as a safe area to stand on.
Ideal for task forces and crews. The Unimog
U 4000/U 5000 in the special version with a double cab
provides room for up to seven people and ensures plenty
of legroom and headroom, even with helmets on. Four
individual seats with air-suspension are available as an
option. The integrated air-conditioning or optional parking heating makes sure there is a comfortable working
temperature for every situation.
Generous stowage is available in the three large compartments under the fold-downable rear bench. Tools, protective equipment, and the crew’s personal belongings are
easily stowed away safely, but at the same time always
handy. Other storage compartments are to be found in the
central console and in the pockets of the front doors. The
wide opening angle of the rear doors allows passengers to
get in and out easily even in touch-and-go situations. On
request, the double cab is also available in a tilt-forward
version. One other advantage of the double cab: the additional square second roof hatch at the back for airing and
ventilating the cab.

The Unimog U 20
Vehicle Concept
Compact and manoeuvrable
The U 20 is especially manoeuvrable with its short wheelbase. And with its overall height of only 2.9 m and vehicle
width of only 2.15 m it gets through almost everywhere.
Permanent four-wheel drive, portal axles and coil springs
provide maximum traction, outstanding ground clearance
and the greatest possible stability. The manoeuvrable
Unimog U 20 is just as suitable for extinguishing fires in
the narrow streets of old cities as for fighting fires away
from paved roads.
The Unimog U 20 always gets through with its
compact dimensions and short wheelbase
14
With its width of only 2.15 m the U 20 is also a reliable partner in
the n
 arrow streets of old cities
Compact. The Unimog U 20 is the smallest and most
manoeuvrable single-tyred off-road vehicle with four-wheel
drive in the class from 7.5 to 10 t. With its short wheelbase
of only 2.7 m the Unimog U 20 achieves a turning circle
of only 12.6 m; and with its overall height of only 2.9 m
it manages to drive under even low access points – but it
still has enough room for a mounted body of up to 3.6 m
in length and a high payload of 4.7 t.
Off-road capabilities. The Unimog U 20 has all the t ypical
Unimog features and is able to cope with operations
over difficult terrain. Permanent four-wheel drive with
differential locks on both front and rear axles provides
maximum traction. Due to its portal axles, the U 20 has
a very slim width but at the same time it has very high
ground clearance. The short wheelbase of 2.70 m and
short overhang give it an excellent angle of approach and
departure which allows it to overcome obstacles, ditches or
embankments easily. The Telligent® transmission with up
to 16 forward and 14 reverse gears also increases
its manoeuvrability even when carrying heavy attached
or mounted implements.
A genunine Unimog: Its off-road capabilities make the Unimog U 20 a reliable assistant even a long way from paved roads

Mounting Points and Cab
Coloured and number coded hydraulic connectors allow implements to be
changed quickly
Hydraulic system. The powerful hydraulic system of the
Unimog U 20 plays a vital role in its outstanding versatility.
The optional hydraulic package consists of two independent
hydraulic circuits with 24 or 48/l a minute feed volume as
well as 200 or 400bar working pressure.
Standardised, flat-sealing, non-dripping hydraulic connectors, colour and number coded, make changing implements
child’s play. And the float position for each valve can be
adjusted individually. The electronically controlled hydraulic
functions are just as simple and are soon done intuitively.
Implements needing a great deal of power such as waste
water pumps, sweepers, snow cutters or generators are best
driven by the powerful engine-driven, load adjustable front
PTO with a standard configuration. Fire extinguisher centri
fugal pumps are run off the auxiliary transmission PTO and
winches, generators and hydraulically-run implements with
the hydraulic system.
The straight frame of U 20 allows fire truck box bodies to be
mounted simply and quickly.
Ergonomic and clearly structured. The forward control cab with three seats
Forward control cab. The forward control cab with
room for a crew of up to three is a mass-produced allsteel construction of galvanized steel and extremely
corrosion resistant. Excellent visibility provided by the
front mirror and low dashboard make driving safer –
especially when roads are very narrow. The individually
adjustable steering column makes handling the vehicle
easier in every situation. And the optional air-sprung
driving seat increases driving and working comfort
just as much as the optional air-conditioning. The cab
can also be tipped forward simply and easily for maintenance work.

System and implement-carrying expertise. The strength
of the Unimog U 300/U 400/U 500 lies in its concept as
implement-carrier. It has three attachment areas: the front
mounting plate for implements run off the front PTO such
as front-mounted sweepers or snow cutters, or between the
axles and at the rear. The additional mounting area of the
Unimog U 300/U 400/U 500 has three options: Existing
implements can be installed on the body or fitted directly
to the ball-type fastening points and permanent bodies
or seasonally changing implements can be fitted directly

Power hydraulics
With two circuits each in the working hydraulic and power hydraulic circuits, four
implements can be operated at the same time and independently of one another
onto the straight side members of the U 300/U 400/U 500
frame. Its high maximum weight of up to 15 t means
that the Unimog U 300/U 400/U 500 has especially high
payload reserves.
Recovery service. Rescuing derailed rolling stock is an
important task for railway operators. And it is also a job
for the Unimog. Acting as a train, it reliably takes the
rescue crew directly to where they are needed – first
by road and then for the final straight by rail: Here the
narrow gauge and the retractable rail guide allow the
Unimog to travel along the rail track – the motive power
comes directly via the vehicles wheels. When used as a
recovery train, the Unimog also carries hydraulic equipment to get the train back on track as well as equipment
such as generators or welding equipment which can be
run directly off the Unimog’s front PTO or the auxiliary
PTOs. As an option, the road-rail Unimog can also be
fitted with a torque converter to provide the extremely
strong traction needed for instance when re-railing
derailed rolling stock.
Off-road capability. As a genuine Unimog, the
U 300/U 400/U 500 can do everything a Unimog needs
to be able to do in off-road conditions. Its portal axles
and permanent four-wheel drive play their part just like
the off-road reduction gear or the optional tyre pressure
control system Tirecontrol.
Hydraulic system. The powerful hydraulic system is
crucial to the Unimog’s high workload when operating
multiple implements. With two circuits each in the working hydraulic and power hydraulic circuits, the Unimog
U 300/U 400/ U 500 is able to run a total of four hydraulic
circuits used independently of one another at the same
time – the ideal starting point for the Unimog’s versatile
operations.

The Unimog on the Job.
Rescuer, firefighter, recovery specialist and protector –
both on and off the road
It has not rained a drop for weeks. One spark is all it
takes and soon whole regions are threatened by a flaming inferno. And the dictate of the moment for all the
professional forest firefighters is: every second counts.
And their Unimog – thanks to its unparalleled dynamics
and powerful striking power during off-road operations –
is the ideal vehicle of choice in those regions of Europe
with an extremely high fire risk. Everywhere in regions
away from paved roads where fires have to be contained
quickly and effectively, the Unimog makes effective use
of its strength. From Germany to Portugal, from France
to Croatia.
Forest fire truck TLF 20/50 model “Brandenburg” based on the U 5000
Germany:
The Unimog U 20 as TLF 10/20 in
accordance with DIN standards
20
Over 23,000 forest fires have been registered in
Germany since 1990. One of the regions most at risk is
Brandenburg. This is due to its extensive pine woods
and sandy ground. As a result, the EU Commission has
put Brandenburg in the highest European forest fire
category. This German state is therefore on par with
Southern France, Corsica, Southern Spain and Portugal
as far as fire risk is concerned.
•Fire truck with tank with the new DIN standard
TLF 10/20 based on the Unimog U 20: Compact,
manoeuvrable, off-roader; vehicle width 2.15 m;
overall weight under 10 t, tank capacity: 2,000 l.
Especially cost-effective, also in historical cities
with narrow streets.
•Forest fire truck TLF 20/50, model “Brandenburg”,
based on the Unimog U 5000: With 5,000 litres of
water, fast intervention equipment, foldable water
cannon on the roof and Unimog heat shield installed
ex factory to EN 1846 and XPS 61-518 standards.
A further special feature: The torsion-free mounting of
the body allows extreme twisting of the chassis up to
30° axle articulation. The tyre pressure control system
Tirecontrol prevents the heavy vehicle from sinking
into the sandy ground in Mark Brandenburg.

2,000 kilometres of coastline are threatened by forest
fires especially in summer. On the job are:
Dry summer months and hard winters with metre-high
snow in the Sudeten Mountains – but the Unimog can be
relied on:
The special topographical conditions with high Alpine
mountain regions and river valleys with a high flood risk
mean that the fire service needs to use off-road vehicles.
•Unimog U 5000 with a double cab for a crew of up to
seven firefighters, high payload, four-wheel drive, high
ground clearance
•Tank capacity 3,000 l water and 400 l foam.
•In the cab, the back of the rear row of seats is fitted
with special breathing apparatus; on the front of
the vehicle an electric self-rescuing winch has been
installed. Total weight: 14.1 t
•Among others, the outstanding off-road U 5000 with
its crane, equipment case and rescue winch is used for
rescue and recovery operations.
•The Unimog U 20 with a firefighting crew cab for either
1 + 8 or 1 + 5 persons integrated in its body is used for
putting out fires or for technical assistance in closely
built-up residential areas or off-road regions.

The Unimog for
Disaster Intervention
Fire, water or earthquakes in inaccessible areas, accidents
in tunnels or on railway tracks – sometimes the most
difficult task proves to be getting to the trapped people.
The Unimog can cope with any obstacles – w
 hether as a
road-rail vehicle for recovering rolling stock, a specialised tunnel recovery vehicle or a fast transporter with
hydraulic connections for recovery equipment – and of
course, also as an off-road first-aid ambulance with up to
four stretchers.
When every second counts, the Unimog can make the most
of its unique potential as it is able to do so much more than
any other vehicle. Uncompromising and reliable technology
makes it a universal tool which helpers in critical regions all
round the world would not like to do without. Even where
there are floods, the Unimog gets through as it is able to ford
depths of up to 1.20 m.
There seem to be more and more natural disasters,
where tonnes of snow, slush or scree block the roads or cut
villages off from the outside world. But the Unimog still
manages to get through with its uncompromising fourwheel drive, powerful engines and versatile implements
and equipment so that technical services, doctors or fire
services can quickly follow. Clearing and cleaning implements can be attached quickly and easily – from snow
cutters and ploughs to sweeping and spraying units. From
the first to the last minute the Unimog plays its part.

With its special fording protection, even water
that is 1.20 m deep is no obstacle for the Unimog

Ready to get going at any time. The borderline between
crisis and catastrophe can be very fine. To overcome the
one and prevent the other it is necessary to have a team
of men and machine that work well together. For years
the Unimog has been standing on the front line. Whether
it involves earthquakes, forest fires, floods or whirlwinds,
the tasks waiting to be done are similar: protection,
rescuing, recovery operations, care, clearing the way and
cleaning up. Fire services, police, technical assistance
and relief organisations all rely on the Unimog’s extreme
reliability, off-road capabilities and versatility. Day after
day. All over the world.
In a crisis every second counts. The right equipment
has to be taken fast and safely to where it is needed.
Here the Unimog can really make the best use of its
talents. For instance, during a flood, with its fording
ability through water of up to 1.20 m deep; or driving
over soggy dykes with the tyre pressure control system
which increases the surface contact area of the tyres,
improves traction and thus protects the sensitive top of
the dyke. This means that the Unimog can take helpers
safely to the critical area, bring necessary provisions for
the population as a transporter, act as a mobile workshop
or a mobile command headquarters.
Power package: The Unimog uses its own hydraulic system to run rescue
equipment such as shears and expanders

Economic Efficiency and
the Environment
The heart of the Unimog – its modern Euro 5 engines
which combine efficient power development, low fuel
consumption and exemplary environmental compatibility.
They give the Unimog its power of up to 210 kW. And
at the same time you have the choice between a driving and working mode, depending on the job. What is
particularly pioneering is BlueTec®, the Mercedes-Benz
diesel technology. SCR diesel technology doesn’t just
optimize your fuel consumption; it also reduces pollutant
emissions and easily comes up to the European exhaust
standards Euro 5 – without needing an additional diesel
particle filter.
Reliability. Direct injection, three valve technology, turbo
charger, intercooler, high torque increase, wide constant
performance range and high performance reserves: with
low-maintenance Euro 5 engines you have state-of-the-art
technology – and are equipped perfectly for very varied
operations. Performance potential: from 110 kW (150 hp) to
210 kW (286 hp).
Uncompromisingly Clean with Euro 5
Transmission. With its electro pneumatic gear unit with
up to 24 forward and 22 reverse gears for speeds ranging
from 0.1–90 km/h – the Unimog can produce optimal
engine performance wherever needed: both on the road or
for your implements.
Engine control. The right engine characteristic just by
pressing a button: You can profit from the elastic speed
control in the driving mode for on-road driving and
t ransport operations. The working mode guarantees
only minimal speed deviations when off-road or using
implements, even when the strain varies.
Always prepared. Operative up to –30° C thanks to the
insulating composite fibre material, reinforced battery for
very reliable starting, heated air dryer for the brake system,
fuel and engine pre-warming and heated windscreen.
Advantages of the BlueTec® engines
•Kind both to the environment and your purse.
Reduced pollutant emissions lower fuel consumption
•Long working life for all parts
Nitrogen oxide (NO2)
Carbon monoxide (CO)
Hydrocarbon (HC)
Solids (PM)
•First class resale value
•Compliance with Euro 5 standards without an
additional diesel particle filter
