Lampeter Welsh Breeds 50th Anniversary Show
Llanllyr Mansion, Talsarn.
23rd April 2011.
To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Lampeter Welsh Breeds Show the catalogue covers
were printed in gold, every section champion was listed from 1962 and photographs included
covering the 50 years. The Show chairman Mr Daniel Morgan presented Dr Wynne Davies
with an Anniversary clock for compiling the lists of champions and supplying the
photographs. There were 689 entries in the 45 classes compared with 25 entries in 7 classes
in 1962.
The Show President was Mr Peter Jones of the Menai Stud who won 9 trophies here last year
including the overall supreme with his cob stallion Menai Sparkling Image. This year he was
judge of the supremes which he awarded to the ridden champion Yrallt Mayday Surprise (C)
with the in-hand Boreton White Prince (section B champion) reserve supreme.
The Show ridden classes were judged by Miss Kerry Wainwright and contained very large
numbers such as 21 ridden section D’s. Overall champion was Marged Simons riding Yrallt
Mayday Surprise who was Olympia ridden “Best of Breed” last year. Adel Davies was
reserve champion riding Nebo Danzi Jones (D), half-brother to her semi-retired Nebo Joni
Jones who was a former Royal Welsh ridden champion.
Judge of the NPS/Micor Demolition/Ringside ridden classes was Mrs Caroline Nelson and
her champion was also a section C, Caerddaniel Chelsea Girl ridden by fourteen-year-old
Sophia Chambers and she was also champion here last year. Reserve champion was Nuella
Ellis-Jones riding Friars Glitters who won the first-ridden class and was also mini-champion.
When the two judges came together for the overall, they decided on Yrallt Mayday Surprise
with Caerddaniel Chelsea Girl reserve.
When Len and Ann Bigley of the Llanarth Stud enquired about sending some mares at Stud
to Boreton White Prince the owner admitted that he didn’t have any mares of his own and
suggested they bought him which they did earlier this year. The judge Mr John James of the
Sianwood Stud described him as “a very correct stallion and a spectacular mover”. Reserve
section B champion was Mandy Jones’ three-year-old colt Melau Montana who has already
won many championships including supreme at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair in 2009.
Mr Dennis Price of the Afan Stud was the section A judge and his champion was also a
stallion, Francis and Sally Goggin’s Penboeth Tantrum who won here as a yearling but has
since run out with his mares. Reserve champion was the three-year-old filly, former Glanusk
champion Baledon Extravaganza produced by Terry Wall and John Osborne of
Buckinghamshire for her breeder Ann Bale-Williams of Clwyd.
Section C stallions are awarded premiums at Lampeter and judge Mr Les Davies of
Blaengwen awarded the championship to Kath Panayiotou’s “within Wales” stallion, former
Royal Welsh junior champion Parvadean Renegade with the “outside Wales” stallion
Coathamdene Just Dennis owned by John Gray of Iver, Buckinghamshire reserve and bought
on the Brightwells 2010 Spring Sale.
Section D stallions are awarded four premium classes and their champion, judged by Mr
Wynford Higgins of Tireinon was the “Mid-Wales” winner Horeb Tomboy well-shown by
young Sion Rees, whose first showing experience this was. Sion is the fifth generation of the
Rees family to handle Welsh cob stallions, his great-great-grandfather Thomas Rees
travelling stallions throughout Wales in the 19th century. Tomboy is sired by Horeb Euros,
champion here in 1992, 1993 and 1996. Reserve champion was Sarah Hamer’s spectacular
three-year-old colt Drogeda Valentino whose three-quarter brother won 2nd premium in the
“South Wales” premium class.
The supreme yearling award went to the section B yearling colt Adagio De L’Aurore bred
and owned by Ingrid Delaitre of France who was present at the Show. His sire Heniarth
Wood-Wind won the yearling supreme here in 2008.
The supreme youngstock award was awarded to Andrew Denney’s two-year-old section C
colt Brascote Galaxy with Baledon Extravaganza reserve. Andrew has won Lampeter
championships in the past with animals produced for other owners but this was the first time
for him to win with his own.
The harness class was judged by Mr Steve Everitt of Tireve and proved that a good “little-un”
can beat a good “big-un”, both were owned by Clare Granger and George Mitchell of
Chingford, Essex, the winner was Croniarth Keltic Starlight (A) and 2nd was Ciffig Cymro
Du (D).
