Dear Graduate,
You will find this issue of the JCC alumni newsletter especially informative about many of the wonderful
and exciting things happening at JCC. The alumni staff and others are committed to keeping you connected
to JCC by ensuring that you have all the information you need to continue to be an ambassador of JCC.
Because of your history of success at JCC, you have the ability and the opportunity to share your story with
others and encourage them to follow your path to success.
There is no question that all of us at JCC are very proud of our graduates. Several stories in this newsletter spotlight how we continue to recognize JCC grads who are making an impact in their communities and
professions. At our commencement ceremonies in May at the Cattaraugus County and Jamestown campuses,
we added another 458 graduates to your ranks. You would have been impressed when, during my remarks, I
asked other JCC graduates in the audience to stand and be recognized. Hundreds rose to their feet, including
about half of everyone on the stage. There is no doubt that JCC continues to contribute very significantly to
the development of leaders in our communities.
You can continue to support JCC by telling those you meet just how well a JCC education prepared you for
the next step in your career or academic pursuits, by making a financial contribution that can provide scholarships to deserving students, or by simply supporting the activities of the JCC Alumni Association. I know
that you feel strongly about JCC and I hope you will stay involved and connected by letting us know how and
what you are doing. You will see from this newsletter that we do not believe our relationship with you ends
when you complete your studies at JCC.
If you have not had a chance to visit JCC lately I hope you will do so, either in person or by visiting our ever
developing and informative website.
Best wishes for a great summer and I hope to see you soon.
Sincerely,
Greg T. DeCinque

Taste of Olean Celebrates Great Food
Thousands of hungry guests will visit JCC’s Cattaraugus County Campus for the Taste of Olean
from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday, July 26.
Taste of Olean, a collaboration between the Greater Olean Chamber of Commerce and JCC, was first launched in 1991.
“Taste of Olean was such a natural idea,” said event organizer Meme Yanetsko. “With the number of great restaurants we have
in the Olean area, the idea of having them all come together to give attendees a ‘taste’ of their great food was just very exciting.”
Yanetsko is the interim administrator of the Chamber, and also serves as president of the JCC Alumni Association, Cattaraugus
County Campus.
The Alumni Association will sell Pepsi products as a fundraiser during the event. The Taste committee will include additional
activities and entertainment to draw more people to the fun-filled event. The Cattaraugus County Arts Council will host the 60th
Annual Art in the Park celebration, to be held in conjunction with Taste of Olean. The Olean Theatre Workshop will host Taste
of Talent, which will showcase local talent and provide entertainment throughout the day. The Olean Family YMCA will bring its
inflatables for the younger crowd to enjoy.
For additional information, contact the Greater Olean Chamber of Commerce at 716.372.4433, or online at

a mission to lobby their legislators about current issues that directly impact both nurses and
nursing students.
Visits were scheduled with Assemblyman
and JCC alumnus William Parment and State
Senator Catharine Young. They discussed
many of the critical issues in nursing, including
the need for higher education for the nursing
profession, safe nurse/patient ratios, workplace violence statutes to protect nurses, and
legislation for safe patient handling to help

New York State Nurses Association’s student
leadership luncheon, where they were able to
network with students from across the state.
This trip was considered a great success by
all participants, and helped JCC’s nursing
students discover the link between healthcare
and politics. The group also enjoyed a tour of
the capitol before heading back to Jamestown.

Tapping into the Hidden Job Market
with Barbara Deike | Employment Development Specialist at JCC
For some time now, research has consistently indicated that 70-80% of jobs are never advertised. Since recruitment budgets
are probably smaller than they used to be, fewer employers may be posting jobs in the traditional (but costly) places where
jobseekers look, the newspaper, and well-known job search sites like Monster.
So how do you find out about these unadvertised opportunities? There are several ways. The most effective may be networking.
This consists of telling everyone you know the kind of position you’re seeking as well as some information about the experience
and education that qualify you for the position. Networking can range from informal (talking to your hairdresser while she cuts
your hair) to formal (arranging an informational interview with someone who works in your desired field). Networking is viral;
the more people you talk to about your skills and goals, the more effective this method will be. To learn more about informational interviewing and other networking methods, please contact the counseling center nearest you.
Conducting a targeted search is another effective method to find unadvertised jobs. This consists of sending customized resumes to companies that hire people with your education and skills, even when they haven’t posted a job. Most employers keep
a file of resumes on hand in case a position becomes available. It’s important to follow up with a phone call when you use this
method; this shows the employer that you’re earnest and interested. JCC’s counseling centers can help you create customized
resumes and develop a list of potential employers.
You can probably name several job search websites. These sites are well-advertised, but are often not used by local employers
because of the expense. You’ll find many more local positions at websites that offer free listings for local employers. Two of
the best are www.americasjobexchange.com and www.sunyjcc.edu/jobs. Additional job search techniques include temp

OTA Program Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary
2009 marks the 10-year anniversary of the Occupational Therapy Assistant program at JCC. The milestone was
celebrated by over 40 alumni, college staff and faculty, and members of the OTA Educational Council at JCC’s
Jamestown Campus on June 12.
Many of the attendees enjoyed a tour of campus, with the OTA lab and the new student residence halls being two of
the highlights. President Gregory T. DeCinque welcomed the group, and Roz Newton, assistant dean of academic
affairs, shared stories and recollections from the first 10 years of the OTA program.
JCC on Track
to Become a
Tree Campus
A tree planting in recognition of Jamestown
Community College’s effort to earn the Tree
Campus USA designation by the Arbor Day
Foundation, was held on April 22.
The event, held in conjunction with Earthfest,
JCC’s annual Earth Day celebration, was
coordinated by the college’s sustainability
committee and included a proclamation by
JCC President Gregory T. DeCinque.
JCC began the Tree Campus USA application
process for its Jamestown and Cattaraugus
County campuses and North County Center
several months ago. The Tree Campus USA
program recognizes colleges and universities
that effectively manage their campus trees and
develop outreach through service learning
opportunities and programs to foster healthy,
urban forests in the broader community.
Five JCC honors students have been working
on a tree inventory and management plan
with Lori Brockelbank, a JCC alumna and a
certified arborist at Forecon.
The public was also invited to other Earthfest
activities, which included live music, educational displays, and ecofriendly goods.
Earthfest also featured “Sustain 2009,” a
webcast from the State University of New York
at Albany. Alan Belensz of the state Department of Environmental Conservation Office of
Climate Change was the keynote speaker.
Members of JCC’s Earth Awareness Club
conducted a tree seedling adoption, thanks to
donations made by the Chautauqua County
Soil and Water Conservation District. Proceeds from the sale of organically grown,
fairly traded products by the Earth Awareness Club were donated to the Chautauqua
Watershed Conservancy and the Chautauqua
County Humane Society.
JCC’s Earth Awareness Club promotes an
increased understanding and appreciation of the natural world and its creatures,
wise environmental stewardship, enhanced
knowledge of important environmental issues,
compassionate living, and local awareness
and action. The club hopes that members of
the JCC community, as well as members of
the community at large, will join together in
celebration of the Earth and learn more about
how we can be better stewards of the beautiful wonders that nature provides.
“Our OTA alumni play an important role in building a strong reputation for the program, and are working in diverse practice areas throughout the region and across the country,” noted Heather Panczkowski, director of the OTA
program. “Some are assuming leadership roles in management, pursuing further education, or starting a business.”
She thanked the group for attending, and for keeping connected with JCC.

Farewell to Chinese Students
Jamestown Community College was one of
22 State University of New York campuses
to open doors to students from the Sichuan
Province of western China, the site of a
devastating earthquake in May of 2008.
This initiative, known as China 150, allowed students from
highly impacted regions to continue their studies during the
2008-09 academic year. In exchange, the students agreed to
return home at the end of the academic year to help rebuild
their local economy.
Five students arrived in Jamestown last August, and
were among the first residents in JCC’s new on-campus
residence suites.
The students enjoyed a variety of experiences throughout the
year, including assisting with Chinese language instruction for
area children, touring local businesses and industries, and traveling to Niagara Falls, New York City, and Boston.
“From an educational perspective, our Chinese students provided us with the opportunity to learn more about Chinese culture and values,” said Dr. Marilyn A. Zagora, vice president and
dean of academic affairs. “Their presence among us helped
facilitate our college goal of strengthening understanding of
the global society in which we live. But more important, these
students connected with us personally, for they were bright, inquisitive learners, and kind, considerate, and respectful young
men and women with whom many of us have formed enduring relationships.”
Yuxin “Destiny” Qin and Yongyi “Young” Yang recalled that
at first it was difficult to find common ground and topics for
conversations with their American roommates. “For example,
we would find interesting topics to discuss with them, like the
presidential election,” said “Destiny.” She noted that common
ground was often found in simple chores, “We helped each
other do the house work, like washing dishes.”
Dr. Zagora added, “One of the students noted that his JCC
experience led him to conclude that ‘we are all people, just
living in different places.’ It is this outcome of the China 150
experience that is really the most noteworthy – by creating
personal bonds, our Chinese students helped us bridge continents and link ourselves more closely to a country far away.
Connections like these serve as the foundation for enduring
change in individuals and, ultimately, in countries. As a result
of this visit, I think we recognize the power of relationships to
change the world.”
“For us, daily life is not only about studying hard, but communicating with foreign friends and learning American culture,”
added “Young.”
The JCC community sends a fond farewell and best wishes to
Pengfei “Clark” Du, Yuxin “Destiny” Qin, Yongyi “Young” Yang,
Qingying “Julia” Yi, and Lei “Stein” Wang.
A Katsura (Cercidiphyllum) tree, native to China, was planted
on campus as a lasting reminder of these five students and
their time on the Jamestown campus.
Victoria Peterson is JCC’s coordinator of international outreach.
She explores and initiates partnerships with international institutions of higher education and secondary schools, and serves
as a primary link for international students enrolling at JCC.
Alumni and area residents wishing to discuss international outreach opportunities are encouraged to contact Ms. Peterson at
716.338.1291 or [email protected].
Each of JCCʼs SUNY China 150 students earned a certificate in individual
studies while at the college. Pictured from left, Pengfei “Clark” Du, Qingying

JCC FOUNDATION
| 2007-2008 ANNUAL REPORT
A Word of Appreciation from The JCC Foundation
Dear Friend,
The pages that follow proudly display the many names of our alumni, parents, faculty, staff, and friends that supported the
college from September 1, 2007 to August 31, 2008. We are truly grateful to everyone who supported us during that time.
Last fiscal year, the momentum continued with our Funding Excellence Campaign. Funding Excellence is a major fundraising
initiative that supports our USA Scholarships, along with the creation of a cultural arts endowment, an athletic endowment,
and a technology endowment. In addition, the campaign supports capital projects on our Jamestown campus.
In the summer of 2008, architects were selected and the design work began for a “green” science facility. Our science faculty
and administrators worked diligently over the past year putting together a solid plan to create the area’s first Silver LEED Certified building. Watch for more news about this project as we break ground this fall.
The JCC Foundation Team
John Garfoot,
Executive Director
The work that we do at the JCC Foundation is about putting our students first. You help us accomplish this mission. Please
know that our students are grateful! We wanted to share with you a thank you note received from JCC student and scholarship
recipient, Kyle Jordan:
Jill Ballard,
“
