Dear Friends in Christ: W ithout a doubt, the year 2013 became the most important turning point for Ukraine since the nation achieved its independence in 1991. The Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) was at the center of monumental and awe-inspiring events that won the world’s respect and captured our imagination. Students of the university were the first to take to the streets of Lviv to protest the Yanukovych regime. The next day they joined millions of freedom-loving Ukrainians on Kyiv’s Independence Square in a non-violent movement that UCU’s President, Bishop Borys Gudziak, aptly called “a Revolution of Dignity.” Our faculty and staff and clergy were there as well. A chapel was established in the center of the Square, where Catholic and Orthodox priests ministered to those savagely attacked and traumatized by police units. The world witnessed the extraordinary heroism of Ukraine’s youth and elderly who braved sub-zero temperatures and defied the brutality of a corrupt government to demand justice. On December 11 the UCU administration called on citizens to engage in nationwide civil disobedience against the grossly corrupt presidency. In 2014, the university shared in the country’s tragedies, as unarmed UCU lecturer Bohdan Solchanyk was among those slain by government snipers on February 20. UCU remains a stronghold of Catholic moral teaching, business ethics and social responsibility. With a new government in Kyiv, the university has committed itself to an intensive campaign to rebuild the country with sweeping reforms that can embody the highest moral and democratic values. UCU’s highly acclaimed Lviv Business School has initiated a program in “Good Governance,” training civil servants to implement sound public policy and to nurture a non-corrupt environment. More recently, the UCU community hosted over 1,000 students from central and eastern Ukraine to demonstrate goodwill and to build a common vision for a democratic future. The university remains true to its primary mission of educating leaders for Church and society. A new multipurpose academic building was consecrated in September. UCEF donors helped support university students and alumni as they provided vital services to orphans, the homeless, the disabled, and other disadvantaged people in the country. The university was honored to host Western ambassadors, renowned scholars and social reformers, among them Papal biographer and 2013 Commencement Speaker George Weigel. In September, the Greater Boston Chapter of the Friends of UCU helped us consecrate a seminar room that they funded, and many other friends from New York, Quebec, Ontario, Ohio, Florida, California and other regions were inspired to see first-hand the dramatic growth and progress at UCU. Here in North America, university staff and faculty attended charity events in New York, Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Chicago and visited supporters in Detroit, Cleveland, San Francisco, and beyond. We want to thank all of you for enabling the University to mature and flourish, even in these turbulent times. And we invite you to visit UCU and to consider the vital role that you and your family can play in helping the University to inaugurate a bright new chapter in the history of Ukraine and the world. May God bless you! Alexander Kuzma Chief Development Officer Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation | Annual Report 2012 | 3 Building a Brighter Future Students, staff take to the squares to stand up for democracy Building a new Ukraine (2014 events) U CU joined all Ukraine in sharing in the tragedy of Independence Square. UCU lecturer Bohdan Solchanyk, unarmed, was slain by a sniper on February 20, 2014. UCU students and staff participated in his funeral. UCU has always been in the forefront of reforming education in Ukraine. And with a radical change in government as a result of former President Viktor Yanukovych fleeing the country in February 2014, the new government asked the university for help. UCU’s highly-respected Lviv Business School was asked to prepare a program to train civil servants to work in a non-corrupt atmosphere, “Good Governance.” The university has also been offering psychological counseling for those traumatized by the former government’s violent response to the protests. And UCU also organized a program conducted every weekend for nine weeks in which students from eastern regions of Ukraine visited Lviv to break stereotypes about western Ukraine they may have. he most decisive events of 2013 in Ukraine certainly centered around Kyiv’s Independence Square. And UCU students, staff, and graduates took an active part. UCU’s students were the first to take to the square in their native Lviv, on November 22. And the next day they were already in Kyiv protesting the Yanukovych regime. UCU continued to bring a Christian message to protesters. Fr. Mykhailo Dymyd, long-time theology professor, spent much time in pastoral ministry in Kyiv. UCU president Bishop Borys Gudziak spoke from the square and on television and ministered to wounded protesters in the hospital. By December 11, the UCU administration had declared civil disobedience against the grossly corrupt presidency. Photo by Andriy Polikovsky T Construction continues on UCU campus T he university continued its construction efforts in 2013. The Multi-Purpose Academic Building was consecrated on September 3. It is the new home of UCU’s history departments, Lviv Business School, Institute of Leadership and Management, and School of Bioethics. At the same ceremony, Fr. Bohdan Prach, PhD, was named the university’s new rector. 4 | Annual Report 2013 | Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation Honored Guests Visit Papal biographer speaks at commencement, covers revolution G eorge Weigel, biographer of St. John Paul II, spoke at UCU’s 2013 commencement ceremonies.“When I accepted an honorary degree from the Ukrainian Catholic University last July and challenged its students and faculty to live out the heritage of the 20th-century Ukrainian martyrs, I assumed an obligation to stand with them when they decided to be and do precisely what I called them to be and do,” said Weigel.“That’s an obligation I’ve tried to fulfill in my writing and work on Ukraine since last November.” He wrote about the situation in Ukraine numerous times during the months of protests. Boston Chapter of Friends of UCU attends blessing of plaque for seminar room T he Greater Boston Chapter of the Friends of the Ukrainian Catholic University, like their counterparts in various cities, are fervently and deeply devoted to UCU. For a number of years now, they have been collecting money to sponsor a room at the university. On September 16 they traveled to Lviv to participate in the blessing of a plaque for the “Boston Friends of UCU Seminar Room” of UCU’s new academic building. Tania Vitvitsky of the Boston chapter said she hopes the example of the Boston chapter will encourage other Ukrainian communities in the US and Canada, and that soon more rooms at UCU will be named in honor of the communities of other cities. U.S. consultant frequently lectures at UCU’s Lviv Business School A drian Slywotzky, a partner at Oliver Wyman and noted business author, is an ongoing guest lecturer at UCU’s Lviv Business School. In the fall of 2013 he taught a course “The Art of Victory.” The methodology and content of the course was unique in Ukraine. After two days of direct work with Slywotzky, participants moved on to a three-month-long distance learning period, performing tasks and working with the recommended books. Slywotzky then followed up. Slywotzky is also a dedicated UCEF donor. Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation | Annual Report 2013 | 5 Reaching Out to ‘...the Least of These’ Orphans, needy grateful for help provided by UCEF donors, UCU students D isadvantaged people in Ukraine are near and dear to the UCEF and the students of the Ukrainian Catholic University. Thanks to the anonymous sponsor of UCEF’s Ginger Fund, hundreds and hundreds of orphans and street children have known God’s love. These children are cared for by Catholic nuns and lay people in various locations in Ukraine. The Ginger Fund supports Catholic orphanages and also projects in which parishes visit the children at local state-run orphanages, where the vast majority of orphans in Ukraine live. And a grant from the Our Sunday Visitor Institute in 2013 helped the efforts of UCU students to bring the Good News to Ukraine’s needy. Students of the Social Pedagogy Department regularly visited orphanages and people in need, and UCU’s revived Student Charity Center ran a Christmas Eve Dinner for the poor and lonely of the city of Lviv. Bringing the Message to the United States Luncheons in New York and Chicago, and Jazz Night Conference in Napa, California I n fall 2013 donors in New York and Chicago had a chance to meet Fr. Bohdan Prach, PhD, the new rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University, and Myroslav Marynovych, former Soviet dissident and current vicerector. Traditional luncheons were held in both cities. And an enjoyable jazz night was held in the Windy City as well. F r. Andriy Chirovsky, PhD, a member of the UCEF Advisory Council, represented UCU and UCEF at the Napa Institute Conference, held in August in Napa, California. Fr. Chirovsky celebrated the Byzantine Divine Liturgy, which was broadcast by EWTN. UCU Reps Talk Art in New York State Chicago Businesses Learn about UCU J ulia Hnativ, of the Development Department of the Ukrainian Catholic University, visited a number of Chicago area businesses in the fall. This was part of UCEF’s Business Sponsorship Program. These businesses then sponsored the two fall UCEF events in Chicago. A ndriy Kurochka, of UCU’s Development Department, and Halyna Solohub, head of UCU’s Modern Foreign Languages Center, visited New York State in the spring. They visited donors and also did research for the university as it plans to start an art collection. Have you considered including UCEF in your will or bequest? A will is an expression of your commitment to the people and groups that you cherish here on earth. As a supporter of the Ukrainian Catholic University, a bequest in your will ensures that the training of young leaders in Ukraine will continue into the future. Here’s suggested wording for a bequest: I give and bequeath to the Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation, of Chicago, IL, _____% of the residue of my estate [or: the sum of $_______] for its charitable, educational and religious purposes.” - See more at: http://ucef.org/support-us/in-the-u-s/ Please contact Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation (UCEF) in Chicago for more information about bequests.
