yachting industry for his work on the motor yachts Sigma and A. the 394-foot
vessel is designed by Philippe Starck, and its exterior lines conjure a military
ship, but in shiny white, more than they do your average mega-yacht. Apparently,
this has been very controversial in the yachting world . Philippe Starck-designed
items can be found in some of Europe’s and America’s most admired museums
New York’s Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Design in London, and Paris’s
Musée des Arts Decoratif
Sleek and Startling

The Godfather’s Son
Bannenberg Designs
Origins:
In 1952 Australian-born Jon Bannenberg moved to London and his career began
to morph towards its final destination: from music to stage design to opening
an interior design shop with his first wife and ultimately to designing yachts
Design ethos:
“It starts with one person’s imagination”. The team underpins this with a wellorganised office, armed with tried and trusted systems for drawing delivery,
specifying and budgetary control. They don’t forget that nobody actually needs
a yacht and the process needs to bring them pleasure.
Speciality:
Award-winning yacht design
Impact in the industry:
Bannenberg’s innovative designs were sometimes controversial in the yachting
community, provoking a “love it or hate it” response from many at the quayside.
Yet Bannenberg is much emulated, having inspired a generation of younger
designers with his novel and functional arrangements and styling cues. In essence,
Bannenberg introduced the latitude for the “stylist” in traditional shipbuilding,
which until that time, followed conservative Post-WW2 practices
Examples of work and why they are important:
Arguably the most striking of his futuristic designs began with the Oceanfast
2000 Never Say Never. This 122-foot (37 m) long vessel displayed not only
shockingly futuristic aesthetics, but a totally unprecedented internal layout
The Cu t in the Water
Dubois Yachts
Origins:
In 1976 the first yacht that Ed Dubois designed won the British Trials for the
Three Quarter Ton Cup, the RORC Class IV overall prize and the Solent Points
Championshipand the name of the boat was Borsalino Trois. It attracted enough
attention to launch both a racing career and Dubois Naval Architects, in 1977;
acknowledged today as one of the World’s foremost yacht design houses
Design ethos:
Dubois’ philosophy is to combine ultimate seaworthiness and excellent
performance with imaginative space planning and beautifully proportioned and
elegant lines
Speciality:
Dubois is a company of naval architects and designers who will always push
technology, who understand instinctively the principles of hydrodynamics, how
a yacht behaves in a seaway and how to design for overall performance. Having
started by designing racing yachts, Dubois expanded their work in 1978 to
include designing production boats and custom cruising yachts
Impact in the industry:
Dubois’ design concept changed the shape, in more ways than one, of yachting.
No longer did sailors rush around on deck, blasted by the elements, or have to
go below deck with no way to see where they were going. By a few deft strokes
on his drawing board he made it possible to stay above deck, out of the wind
and rain, and still see where you are going
Examples of work and why they are important:
In 1985 Dubois started work with an owner who wanted something “different”.
The result was Aquel II; a 37 metre (120 foot) cruising yacht which turned heads
wherever she went. The team developed new winches, a discreet ventilation
system and a new sleek superstructure. Here was a boat which was not only
technically advanced but also beautiful and original.

Impact in the industry:
Some of the design concepts of Ken Freivokh Design are excitingly futuristic.
Ken Freivokh Design is most famous for the sailing superyacht, the Maltese
Falcon, which won eight prestigious awards in 2007. At the time it was launched,
Maltese Falcon was the largest sailing yacht in the world, but she is known as
much for her beauty and innovative design as for her size. Examples of work and why they are important:
A more current design concept from Ken Freivokh Design is a 55’ concept
cruising yacht that uses no fuel. Freivokh met with the people at Voller Energy
to discuss integrating their green technology into one of his yachts, and they
readily agreed to collaborate. The Emerald Fuel Cell System is a reliable, safe
and clean source of electric power that eliminates the need for a large generator
or engine, which could effectively take over as the total power system for the
yacht. Without the bulk of the generator and engines, there would be more
room for design, too. One Man Show
Tim Heywood Designs
Origins:
With an interest in all fields of industrial design, it was when introduced to celebrated yacht designer Jon Bannenberg that Tim realised all of these interests
could fuse into one career. After graduating from the Central School of Art and
