Patron Picks
Patron Sally Brockman
recommends the following
titles:
The Secret Scripture by
Sebastian Barry. One hundred
year old Roseanne lives in a
decrepit insane asylum in
Ireland. She is secretly writing
her life story at the same time
the head doctor at the asylum
is evaluating patients to see
who can be released or be
moved to a new hospital.
Roseanne has been there over
60 years but there is no record
of why or exactly when she
was admitted.
The Ocean at the End of the
Lane by Neil Gaiman. Set in
the English countryside a
young boy begins to
experience some odd things. A
neighborhood girl, Lettie
befriends him and helps him
when he accidentally falls into
a world of strangeness. She
lives with her mother and
grandma at the end of the
lane. They are "ancients" who
guard and guide him through a
series of otherworldly adventures. It's like a Grimm's fairy
tale = bizarre, scary, exciting
and satisfying.
The Secret Rooms: A True
Story of a Haunted Castle, a
Plotting Duchess, and a
Family Secret by Catherine
Bailey. I enjoyed this story of
the 9th Duke of Rutland, John
Henry Montague Manners, and
the family secrets he tried to
hide. Before he died in 1940,
he locked himself in his archive
rooms at Belvoir Castle, feverishly working at, what? Upon
his death his son locked the
rooms and no one was allowed
in them for almost 60 yrs. In
2008, writer Catherine Bailey
was working on a book about
WWI and was granted access
to the archives. As she read
through the mountains of
correspondence, she became
intrigued by a "cover-up" and
so wrote a very different book
than she had set out to.
How To Survive a Zombie Apocalypse and
Other Disasters
Are you prepared for a zombie apocalypse and other disasters? Do you have an
action plan? Do you know what supplies to store in the case of a natural disaster?
Curtis Parsons from Lenawee County, Michigan, Emergency Management and
Homeland Security will be here to discuss emergency preparedness. All are
welcome to attend on Monday, August 15th at 6:30 p.m.
Fashions of the Roaring 1920’s
Laura Loew will showcase
the fashions of the 1920’s as
captured on the PBS show
Downton Abbey. She is the
owner of Lost in the Past, a
company that specializes in
antiques, clothing and
accessories of the Victorian
and Edwardian periods.
She will describe the
changes in style while spotlighting favorite characters
and their onscreen fashions.
This special fashion lecture
is sponsored by The
Tecumseh Area Historical
Society and the Tecumseh
Senior Center.
