Focus
At the mid-point of the year, I am delighted to
announce that we are well on our way to achieving
our target of reaching 90 locations by year-end.
Our Programme Services team, headed up by
Lisa Curtis, has been exceptionally busy launching
in four new locations, with a further five planned
for the second half of the year (see Programme

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
What is particularly interesting to note is that
the successful development and implementation
of our Masterclasses has, in a number of cases,
been instrumental in paving the way towards
launching core Workshops in certain locations.
Our ambitious target for expansion of both
Workshops and Masterclasses is, of course,
made possible through the continued support
of our member companies, generous help from
corporate partnerships and our unique and
exciting fundraising activities. This year’s
Feel Better Week has so far raised over an
amazing £200,000 and, at the time of going
to print, we are still counting!
Congratulations to Ian Daniels, Head of Fundraising,
and the team for their energy, creativity and
commitment in organising and co-ordinating this
hugely successful campaign, which culminated in
another new UK fundraising initiative – SWALK –
Walking for Women with Cancer. Read more about
these events on pages 8, 9 and 10. My sincere
thanks go to every company, organisation, team
and individual who created or participated in
all these outstanding fundraising triumphs.

Finally, as always, I would like to thank our
Head Office team, Regional Managers, voluntary
Regional Co-ordinators and all our fantastic beauty
volunteers for their continued dedication and
commitment. I would also like to extend my
most grateful thanks to our Chairman, the Board,
Finance Committee and Trading Company Board
for their commercial acumen and guidance,
as well as welcoming two new Board Members,
Ian Marshall from Benefit Cosmetics and
Guy Farmer from Boots.
We have asked one of our longest-standing
supporters and Board Member, Kenneth Green,
to give his point of view on our evolution as a
charity (see below). We look forward to a
successful second half of the year and will
update you again via our e-newsletters as
the year progresses.

As the saying goes, ‘imitation is the sincerest
form of flattery’ – so we were extremely proud
that some of our UK initiatives are going global.
The LGFB Make-up Brushes have been launched
internationally, Benefit Cosmetics’ Bold is
Beautiful campaign is now also a global project
and our friends at LGFB New Zealand have
recently undertaken an ‘On the Move’ roadshow,
inspired by our 20th Anniversary project in
2014 (see our International Focus on page 3).
A message from
KENNETH
GREEN
I’ve been involved with LGFB right from the
very beginning and watched with admiration
as the charity has grown and flourished, first
of all under the leadership of Ann Harvey and,
since 2007, under Sarahjane Robertson’s
direction. I believe that’s something to feel
proud about that we’ve only had two Executive
Directors and only four Chairmen in 22 years.
This continuity of leadership has resulted in a
highly professional evolution which, together
with Lisa Curtis’s 12 years’ heading up
Programme Services and Ian Daniels’ arrival
as Head of Fundraising four years ago, has
led to an impressive increase in our reach
and in the charity’s income.
At Kenneth Green Associates, our 300-strong
team are all proud to support LGFB and we
have great fun getting involved with Feel Better
Week and helping to raise funds. I encourage
everyone to participate in fundraising and many
of our Consultants are long-term volunteers.
For the future, it would be wonderful if we could
have dedicated LGFB rooms in some hospitals,
where patients could go and relax and have
a volunteer give them advice. As the number
of Workshop locations and Masterclasses
increases, we will need more and more products
– perhaps in the future, a LGFB skincare and
make-up range could be developed! As we
keep on growing, these dreams might become
realities. In the meantime, I am very proud of
what LGFB has achieved over the past 22 years.
Kenneth Green is Chairman of Kenneth
Green Associates and a LGFB Board Member.

INTERNATIONAL FOCUS
LGFB is operational in 26 countries with a global brand identity and unique offering but the flexibility to customise
certain elements based on local market needs. The USA, New Zealand and the UK are three of the ‘oldest’ countries
hosting LGFB, and we are delighted that the Executive Directors of LGFB USA and LGFB New Zealand have shared
some of their thoughts and initiatives with us.

ouanne Roark was appointed Executive Director of LGFB
L
USA in 2005, having spent 10 years previously working on the
Programme. Look Good Feel Better originated in the USA in
1988 and the Programme now has 2,100 host facilities across
the States. LGFB’s extraordinary global impact is demonstrated
by the statistics shown on this page. Louanne explains how the
charity plans to reach more women:
women reached to date,

“Our goal is to have consistent information from every country that supports what we
know anecdotally – that following a LGFB workshop, women feel empowered; they
feel better and more positive about their ability to fight and survive their disease; they
feel more like themselves before treatment. We plan to use this information to tell the
positive story of women everywhere who face the challenge of a cancer journey and
the impact of a changed appearance and the hope, confidence and self-esteem that
result when they experience LGFB. It is one small element in the complex web of
cancer treatment and recovery but we are providing tangible and practical support
to help women get through their cancer journey. We plan to share the results of our
research in a global World Cancer Day initiative in 2017 helping to raise funds and
awareness for LGFB in all 26 countries, as the only global cancer support Programme
addressing this issue.”

New Zealand
Each country has its special characteristics and issues and Clare O’Higgins, Executive
Director of LGFB New Zealand, certainly has geographical challenges. On South Island,
it is very rural and the population is sparsely spread, so there were issues about getting
enough volunteers in those areas and how far beneficiaries would have to travel.
Clare explains, “Some people had to travel over two hours, so we wanted to have
workshops in rural communities to avoid this. Now no-one should have to travel more
than 30 minutes. In the last two years, we have grown from 24 centres to 36 and by
December, we will be in 40 locations, with around 460 volunteers”.
Clare was inspired by the UK’s ‘On the Move’ initiative and thought it would be wonderful
if New Zealand could do pop-up workshops, “rocking into a town and putting on a
workshop on the spot”.
2
The dream became a reality when Royal Wolfe, a container company, donated a 40ft
container to LGFB. Mazda New Zealand offered to underwrite the insurance to take it
on the road; Farmers Department Store Group paid for the container to be fitted out and,
finally, BP donated the petrol! “It was amazing how everyone helped us out and made
the dream come true. The container can be packed down and then trucked to the next
venue. Our mantra was ‘how can we spread our wings?’ and we were overwhelmed
by the generosity of so many people and companies helping the charity to get to rural
communities.” New Zealand’s On the Move’ roadshow is scheduled to visit 40 venues
across both islands!

programme update
FOUR NEW workshop LOCATIONS
In the first six months of
this year we have launched
Workshops in four new
locations, two of which
were the result of very
successful Masterclasses
held in the previous year.
At South Petherton Community Hospital
in Yeovil and Sunderland Royal Hospital,
we were fortunate to have Regional
Co-ordinators already in place: Natasha
Kittelson for Yeovil and Joan Laybourne
for Sunderland. Natasha was involved
with LGFB when we first started to offer
Masterclasses at South Petherton and
she was instrumental in recruiting the
current team. Joan, a long-standing
volunteer and deputy Regional
Co-ordinator at Newcastle for many
years, also did some outstanding work
in enabling the launch in Sunderland.
The new purpose-built Macmillan Centre
at East Surrey Hospital, Redhill, was
opened in January and we were proud
to be asked to run the LGFB Workshops
at this beautiful venue. We are very
pleased that Rae Denman has taken
on the role of Regional Co-ordinator.
For the launch at Darent Valley Hospital
in Kent, we had newly appointed Regional
Co-ordinator, Sara Leyser, bringing with
her years of LGFB experience. The
hospital is very close to Bluewater
Shopping Centre, so is a great location
for store-based volunteers! At the
launch, Chris Handy, Macmillan Lead
Chemotherapy Nurse, commented,
“We pride ourselves in knowing that our
patient satisfaction is second to none.
Providing the LGFB service to patients
around the Dartford area is the icing on
the cake and we feel very privileged.
Not only are all our staff excited, but our
patients can’t wait to reap the benefits
of the service”.
Our grateful thanks to the hospital
staff and our wonderful new volunteer
teams for their excellent work on these
successful launches. Plans for five further
launches are already well underway.

REGIONAL CO-ORDINATORS CONFERENCE
This year, our Annual Conference
was held in London, with the venue
and excellent conference facilities
generously donated by CMS
Cameron McKenna. Fifty of our
volunteer Regional Co-ordinators,
including 19 first-time delegates,
attended the conference, with the
Head Office team and Regional
Managers, Sarah Emerson and
Michelle Roberts. The agenda
covered an overview of current and
future plans and the conference also
provided the opportunity to thank the
team for their outstanding commitment
and contribution.
Our Guest Speaker, Carole Ann
Pitfield, a LGFB volunteer and freelance
camouflage make-up expert, gave
a very interesting and insightful talk.
Our grateful thanks to Carole Ann
and to CMS for ‘donating’ the venue.

volunteer focus
Out of over 2,300 volunteers across the country, we asked four
of our wonderful team to share their experiences and thoughts.
Their views are probably echoed by every single one of our beauty
consultants and we hope they will inspire others to come forward
and join our invaluable volunteer ‘family’.
Our ‘fast track’ training for
a number of M&S beauty
consultants has resulted in
a sharp increase in the number
of Masterclasses held so far
this year, with several new
locations and all excellently
run by M&S staff.
We hope to have at least 12 M&S
stores running Masterclasses, with
more in the offing. Our thanks to
Rebecca Cullen, Beauty Experience
and Education Manager at M&S and
Ella Treloar, Commercial Manager, for
their very positive support.
BRIAN MESSAM
Our partnership with Breast Cancer
Care is also developing successfully
with 10 Masterclasses booked within
their groups to date.
We are on track to exceed our target
of 325 Masterclasses this year and
by the year end, we hope to have
reached 3,250 additional beneficiaries.
JOAN LAYBOURNE
A BIG THANK YOU TO
Not only does bareMinerals
consistently donate a large
quantity of products for our
patient gift bags and encourage
their beauty consultants to
sign up as volunteers, they
now provide much valued
(and vitally needed!) logistics
support for the materials
used at our fast-growing
Masterclasses.
We are therefore extremely grateful
to bareMinerals for offering this extra
support, allowing us to streamline the
logistics for this service. Our thanks go
to Andrew Rodgers and his team in
London and Basildon for being such
outstanding and practical supporters.
JANE RITCHIE
LORRAINE POPE
After volunteering for LGFB for nearly 10 years, Brian Messam
is now our Regional Co-ordinator for Guildford and The
Royal Marsden (Sutton) hospitals. Brian has over 30 years’
experience as a freelance hair and make-up artist as well as
personal experience of supporting a friend through breast
cancer. Through this he realised that he had a gift for helping
others with his expertise and caring personality. “Working
as a volunteer has enriched my life immensely. Giving
women back some of the confidence they have lost whilst
going through cancer treatment and making them look
and feel fabulous brings me as much pleasure as it does
them. It is rewarding beyond words!” So to other potential
volunteers he says, “becoming a LGFB volunteer will
enrich your life”.
Joan Laybourne, a volunteer for six years, recently became
Regional Co-ordinator for Sunderland Hospital, having
previously organised many Masterclasses in the area.
As a freelance skin camouflage practitioner, she has extensive
experience in helping women regain confidence in their
appearance and finds volunteering for LGFB very rewarding.
“It is amazing that make-up, which some people might
regard as trivial, can make such a very real difference
to someone’s self-esteem and confidence. For anyone
wanting to volunteer, it’s best to observe a workshop to
appreciate the difference it makes – it really is a deeply
rewarding experience.”
Jane Ritchie, a volunteer since 1995 and a Counter
Manager for Clinique for 40 years, feels privileged to
be able to bring her training and skills to LGFB workshops.
“As trained beauty consultants, we have skills to share
with the ladies attending the sessions. We’re not nurses,
but our training teaches us how to interact with different
personality types and to be empathetic. I love the feeling
of fellowship at workshops, of people making friends,
laughing and enjoying a new, non-medical experience.”
Jane offers some words of wisdom for potential volunteers,
“If you observe a workshop first, you’ll see that it’s
not an intimidating ‘hospital’ experience. I believe
the volunteers get as much out of a session as the
beneficiaries – it’s definitely one of the most rewarding
and gratifying things I have ever done”.
Lorraine Pope, a volunteer for 8 years, is also Deputy Regional
Co-ordinator for Leicester and has been a Lancôme beauty
consultant for 24 years. She finds her role uplifting, energising
and rewarding. “It really is a very positive experience – the
ladies come in with heads down, very quiet and then after
two hours, they leave with smiles on their faces, looking
amazing. That is the reward of being a LGFB volunteer,
helping the ladies attending to look and feel fantastic.”

AWARENESS CAMPAIGN FILM >>
lights, camera, action!
On a lovely sunny Saturday, L’Oréal UK very kindly opened up its spacious restaurant on the
6th floor of its Hammersmith headquarters, where we recreated and filmed a LGFB workshop.
Just like a real shoot, there were
‘models’, make-up artists, a director,
assistants, cameramen, soundmen
and a whole team of people ensuring
the smooth-running of the day. Although
no-one actually said “Lights, Camera,
Action”, the excitement and anticipation
of every participant certainly created the
feeling of an award-winning film in the
making. And indeed the Director, Lucy
Blakstad, who generously donated her
services, has won a BAFTA for her
work as a documentary and commercials
director. So, we were in very good hands!
Following a call-out for beneficiaries
who would be willing to be filmed
and interviewed, as well as beauty
consultant volunteers, we chose nine
‘models’, Jeannette, Jodie, Paulette,
Helen, Lungile, Caroline, Maureen,
Francesca and Lauren, ranging in
age from 20 to 70 years. The common
ground was that they had all attended
a LGFB workshop and were more than
happy to appear in this new film to
talk about their experiences.
6|
As an awareness-building communication
tool, the brief to Lucy was to produce
two short, snappy films – a generic one
focusing on Workshops and Masterclasses
and a second one to use for volunteer
recruitment, highlighting the role and
requirements of being a beauty consultant
volunteer and its unique rewards.
The morning was taken up with
preparation and filming the workshop
in action. Then, after a break for lunch,
the beneficiaries and volunteers were
interviewed by Lucy and Executive
Director, Sarahjane Robertson.
Many weeks of editing, refining and
finishing followed and our new ‘film’ was
launched at the Copra Awards Luncheon
on 18 May (see page 12) to an audience
of around 350 guests from leading
retailers and key cosmetic and fragrance
brands. The reaction was entirely positive
– “an engaging summary of LGFB’s
unique service”, “uplifting and motivating”,
“very persuasive”. We are now utilising
the films for PR purposes – showing
them to potential new member companies
and partners, new hospitals and cancer
care centres and to recruit new volunteers.

Bold is beautiful
Benefit Cosmetics’ highly successful global
philanthropy programme, Bold is Beautiful,
returned for its second year in aid of LGFB...
In the UK, the company pledged to
donate 100% of its profits from its brow
wax services during May equally to Look
Good Feel Better and Refuge. Customers
who booked a brow wax service during
the month also received a complimentary
full size Gimme Brow (worth £18.50).
This year’s campaign ambassador was
actress, singer and presenter Denise van
Outen, who launched the annual fundraising
campaign with a march through the
streets of London on Sunday 8th May.
Taking in Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar
Square and along the River Thames,
the walkers, who were encouraged to
start with minimal make-up, could stop
at Benefit’s checkpoints along the route
to receive beauty ‘touch-ups’ to their skin,
lips, eyes and, of course, eyebrows.
Speaking about her involvement, Denise
said: “I am truly proud to be a part
of this year’s Bold is Beautiful
campaign. Our incredible UK charity
partners, Look Good Feel Better and
Refuge, support women and children
undergoing serious times of
adversity and help them to regain
a sense of self and wellbeing.
I’ve had the pleasure of meeting
some of these women and have
been humbled by their experiences.
I urge everyone to get involved as we
attempt to raise as much money as
possible for these amazing causes!”
Benefit staff across the country were also
challenged to come up with additional
fundraising events which included bake
sales, VIP evenings, raffles, dance-a-thons
and mud runs to name just a few. But in
true Benefit style there were some unique
ideas including the Sunderland Benebabes
taking a ‘Pink Dip’; the unique patchwork
quilt that was crafted by the Boutiques
team and the Scottish team who scaled
Ben Nevis to perform the UK’s highest
brow wax!
Benefit Cosmetics’ Managing Directors,
Ian Marshall and Gail Bojarski explained
the thinking behind Bold is Beautiful:
“While we’ve been transforming
brows since 1976, it was 2015
which saw us take our feel-good
approach to beauty well beyond
the boutiques by launching our
first global philanthropic endeavour.
We’re pleased to donate the profits
from our brow wax services and use
this to help create bigger, bolder and
more beautiful lives for women and
girls across the UK”.

by the success of this year’s Bold

on the red carpet
There are many industry events throughout
the year which support LGFB, both in raising
funds and increasing awareness. Here we
highlight three recent events and we thank
all those involved in the organisation of
these occasions and those who so
generously donated.
COPRA LUNCHEON
1
This year’s Copra (Cosmetic & Perfumery Retailers’ Association)
Awards Luncheon was a unique occasion for LGFB as our
new Awareness Campaign film had its ‘première’ at the event,
receiving a unanimous vote of confidence from the 350 guests.
Julia Simpson, Luxury Beauty Buyer, Boots UK and Copra Chair,
introduced the new film, explaining its objectives of raising
awareness of LGFB’s unique services, encouraging brand
and corporate support and helping recruit beauty consultant
volunteers from leading companies.
Held at The Dorchester in London on 18th May, guests included
key industry figures from leading retailers and cosmetic and
fragrance brands. We are extremely grateful for their continued
support in raising funds each year from their Luncheon and very
popular Ball. The raffle, which included a wonderful selection
of prizes, raised £3,570. Our thanks and congratulations on an
excellent event to the Copra Board, especially Julia Simpson,
Debbie Trumper and Camilla Pascucci.
FRAGRANCE FOUNDATION
The 24th Fragrance Foundation Awards took place at The
Brewery, London on 12th May with over 700 industry guests
and a host of celebrities. Almost £28,000 was raised through
an auction and raffle and this will be split 50/50 between
LGFB and Fifth Sense. Our thanks to Chair, Annalise Fard,
CEO Linda Key and the Fragrance Foundation Board for their
much valued support and to all the guests for their generosity.

The BABTAC & CIBTAC Awards (British Association of Beauty
Therapy & Cosmetology and Confederation of International
Beauty Therapy & Cosmetology) took place on June 12th at the
prestigious Hurlingham Club in London. As their official charity
partner, BABTAC has been promoting LGFB volunteering
and fundraising opportunities to their members through regular
e-newsletters, their bi-monthly ‘Vitality’ Magazine, new and
renewal memberships and also at the Awards. This was
attended by leading industry figures from key professional brands,
as well as hundreds of members of the two Associations. This
ongoing partnership has been instrumental in enabling LGFB
to extend its reach within the professional beauty market.

The Bournemouth Daily Echo dedicated
a page to the LGFB Masterclasses at the

that the sessions “offer a fantastic
opportunity for women to come together”.
Earlier in the year BBC Wales and
TV presenter, Connie Fisher, attended
a workshop in Cardiff to capture the
confidence-boosting effect that our
sessions have on women undergoing
treatment for cancer. The ladies
interviewed were then included in a
programme that explored the importance
of make-up and the reasons people

New LGFB Ambassadors
After attending a workshop last
year, beauty bloggers Lily Pebbles
(left) and Anna Gardener (right)
wanted to do as much as they
could to help raise awareness
and money for LGFB.
Anna comments, “Lily and I have
seen first-hand just how uplifting
and confidence-building the LGFB
workshops can be for women going
through treatment. They’re full of
laughter and lipstick and we look
forward to supporting them in the
year ahead”.
As LGFB’s digital ambassadors they will be supporting us at a
number of events throughout the year. Most recently they took
part in SWALK and their YouTube videos to promote the walk
received more than 77,000 views.

Look Good Feel Better UK
I had an amazing afternoon at the Solihull hospital workshop today.
The volunteers who ran the session were brilliant from start to finish they
were very warm and welcoming. The two hours flew by and I loved all
the free goodies. Was rather apprehensive about going but it was lovely
to spend time with other women going through a similar experience.

& BEST WISHES
After over 20 years
of supporting LGFB,
our much loved
Regional Co-ordinator
for Sheffield, Jan
Cooper, stood down
from the Charity
at the end of April.
Jan’s enthusiasm for LGFB shone through in
everything she did – from leading the workshops
at Weston Park Cancer Centre three times
a month, the special teenage sessions and
through to all the wonderful fundraising events
she organised. Jan raised thousands of pounds
as well as generating a huge amount of awareness.
She has positively touched the lives of many
hundreds of women and teenagers during her
20 years with the charity and she will be hugely
missed by us all. Thank you, Jan, for being such
a wonderful Ambassador for LGFB.

NEW ANTI-BACTERIAL MAKE-UP BRUSHES
Following on from the huge success of
LGFB’s award-winning Make-up Brushes,
which have become a firm favourite with
make-up artists and consumers, a set of
anti-bacterial brushes has been launched.
Developed with the expertise of Bespoke
Europe, the company who created the
original brushes, each of the new brushes
is treated with a non-toxic, hypoallergenic
compound that will help keep harmful
bacteria, including E.coli, at bay. In clinical
trials, the anti-bacterial treatment was
found to stop bad bacteria from taking
hold and reduce the presence of E.coli
by almost 100%.

The four anti-bacterial brushes, housed in
a stylish pouch, have a deep pink design,
with hand-sculpted, super-soft taklon fibre
bristles. They are allergy-free, cruelty-free
and suitable for sensitive skin. The Look
Good Feel Better Anti-Bacterial Brush
Set includes a large Multi-Tasking Brush,
Round Foundation Brush, Eye Shading
Brush and Lip Brush. Priced at £35, the
set is available from larger M&S Beauty
