Too many genealogists are stuck in a genealogical rut. Oh, we still research frequently and
find new data -- we just never try anything new. It's almost fall now, and most of us will be
making a big genealogical push -- to get our research in order before the rush of the holidays, and, before the year ends, to fulfill the goals we envisioned for ourselves at the beginning of the year.
How do you get out of the rut? Try new techniques! Somewhere in your area, there are
classes or seminars or workshops. Find one or more that appeal to you, grab a friend, and
sign up. Just the opportunity to rub shoulders with other genealogists will give you new ideas
and reinvigorate your research. If you only learn one or two new things from the class,
seminar, or workshop, it may be just the thing to solve your problems with those elusive
dead ends.
Get some correspondence cooking! Remember when you were excited about genealogy and
wrote all those letters? Remember the thrill of a full mailbox? Check the Genealogical
Helper's annual list of societies and libraries; find one in one of your areas of interest, and
write some letters. Do they have any new books for sale? Do they have a researcher card file
you can add your name to'? Could they check their materials for information on your lines?
Do they have a publication and will they accept queries? Is there anyone locally who is
related to or researching your line that you could be put in touch with?
Were your folks Baptist? Catholic? Methodist? There are regional and national archives for
the various religions. Your local library should have a library directory in which you can
search out these types of libraries you never thought to contact before.
Were any of your ancestors in the military? Don't look for just Civil War veterans, but also
regular military service, and even modern military service, such as World War I and II.
Order a copy of your ancestor's draft registration for World War I. Order his VA claim file
and his military record. In the last year, I've ordered my father's military record and my
grandfather's VA claim file, and both had a great deal of material of interest, even though
they were very modern records. Were any of your ancestors civilian employees of the federal
government? I ordered my great grandfather'S employment record with the post office. It
was full of fascinating data! (Be sure to write "COpy ALL PAPERS" on everything you
order.)
Anyone who lived past the late 1930's may have applied for a Social Security card. Order a
copy of their application and their Social Security claim file. There were people born as
early as the 1860's who blabbed everything about their birth and their parents on the application for a Social Security card they filled out late in life.Order a free tombstone from the
VA for a veteran. It doesn't even have to be your ancestor! Perhaps there are some unmarked graves in your local cemetery. Investigate. If any were veterans (even Confederate
sOldiers), the government is anxious to ship you a free tombstone merely for the asking and
a little proof.
Don't know how to do some of these things? Well, it's never too old to learn something new
-- find out! Talk to people, call ~overnment agencies, write letters, take a class. Soon your
m(lilbox will be filled with goodies and your research will take on new life. You might start
by looking over the information in this issue about the AGS Fall Seminar. It's going to be a
great one, and you're sure to meet a lot of interesting people too. Join us in Fort Smith and
energize your gene,doh'Y!

Old Photographs
Member Collene Pearce, 1203 Weatherford
Dr., Austin, TX 78753-2031 has written that
upon the death of her grandmother and aunt,
many old photos were given to her. While
doing research on her lines, she learned that
many of these are people who are either not
related to her family at all, or are so distantly
related as not to matter to her research. She
would like to get those photos into the hands
of appropriate descendants. They include:
Family of Emme (Hollis) and Sam Smith.
Emme was sister of Louis Yandell Hollis, b.
1853 IL, d. 1923, AR, and dau. of David
Hollis, b.? NY. Photo contains 25 people
standing in front of white 2 story house with
picket fence, approx. 1900. Location: IL,
MO, KS, AR or OK.

Many small photos of Leroy family. These
people were either desc. of Irene Wollis
Leroy or were relatives of these descendants.

Neva Salisbury, first wife of Martin V. Hollis
(2 photos approx. 12 and 18 years of age).
Dates approx. 1905-1915;location AR or OK

living descendants of Neva and Martin.
Perhaps she remarried and had second
family).

article.

destroyed.

prostrated.
After Mrs. Freed's the wind took its course
up the Pilot Rock mountain, where it
completely destroyed the farm and buildings
of Mr. McMinn, which place is the last
damage we hear of, and the probability is
that it struck the mouth of Indian Creek, in
the corner of Johnson, Pope and Searcy
counties. We have not noted many reported
injuries to persons because they were
merely rumors, and the whole is much
greater than we have given.

_____________________Taylor Had Arkansas Kin
From the Arkansas Gazette, July 9, 1991
"To the Editor: The news about President Zachary Taylor is very interesting and informative. I
have the genealogy of this man. He was the descendant of King Alfred the Great, King John,
King Charlemagne, King Henry II, King Henry III and Edward I. His mother was Sarah Strother, the sister of General Grandison D. Royston's grandmother, Elizabeth Strother. Elizabeth
Strother married Rev. Samuel Watson. Their daughter, Elizabeth Strother Watson married
Joshua Royston. Joshua Royston and his wife, Elizabeth Strother Watson, were the parents of
General Grandison D. Royston, the president of the Arkansas Constitutional Convention of
1874.
Also in Taylor's line were the Thmntons and the Savages. Many people do not realize they have
distinguished kin.

Great Great Grandfather, Benjamin M. "Mem" GRAMLING
1816 - 1894
By John Leroy WILLIAMS, II
During the summer monlhs of 1990 I have heen on one of the most incredible journeys of my life - and yel I have
never left home to do it. I wanilO share one of Ihese fascinaling experiences with you.
Some months ago, I put what is known as a "query" in a genealogical publication -I don't even remember which
Pub it was. A query is a shari statement, in genealogical "shorthand"lerms, inquiring about some family conneclion, or listing the names of the family lines one may bc researching. The query thai I sem for publication included
the name GRAMLING, which as you may remember, was the maiden name of my (our) great grand mother, Mary
E. GRAMLING EUBANKS, mother of grandmother Armina Jane EUBANKS Wilhams.
In August I received a letter from a man who had read my query and who was also descended from a GRAMLING
family. His name is Harrel Shewmaker, and he lives in Greene Counly Arkansas where many of our old relatives
lived and died over the past 150 years. I followed up with a letter and we began 10 exchange and compare data. Soon
it became clear that we came from the same family line of GRAMLINGS. Using information thai Mr. Shewmaker
(who is about my age) senlto me, and comparing il with what J already had, and doing some more research at the
National Archives, I have now extended the GRAMLING line of our family back to Bavaria in the early 1700's,
That's something like twelve or fourteen generations into the past.
In the process J have definitely established some other things of interest. Here is the story Ihat unfolds from this
work which I believe with 95% certainty to be faclual:
Our earliest known (at this time, October 1990) Gramling fore-father was a man named Adam GRAMLING
(Gramlyn - Grumlich - Gramick· Krumlich) who came to this country about 1735 and settled near Orangeburg,
South CarOlina. Adam married Christiania Gassoway, an immigrant from Germany. They had at least eleven children.
Their second child was Rev. Martin Luther Gramling, a Melhodist Minister (1765-1831). Marlin's first child was a
son, Reuben M. Gramling (1791-1865). To Reuben was born a number of children. Three of Reuben's sons,
Benjamin, Richard, and Thomas, came to Arkansas ahout 1856 and sculed in and around Lawrence Gounty, what is
now Greene County Arkansas. These Ihree Gramling sons arc fore fathers of most (if not all) of the Gramlings
born in thai area during Ihe pasl 135 years or so.
One of those Ihree sons of Reuben was Benjamin M. (for Memory or for Martin) GRAMLING, my great great
grandfather. He was called "Mem" as I have personally heard from the lips of my grandmother Armina Jane Eu.
banks Williams whicb leads me to believe bis middle name was Memory, a promment 'given' name down through
the Gramling family line.
One of the youngest sons of Benjamin M. was Benjamin Madison Gramling, a well educated man, a schoolteacher,
who has done quite a bil of writing abOUI bis Gramling Family, and who says that his father's given middle name
was 'Martin: I must give this statement by his Son mueh weight, but if that is so, why then was he called 'Mem?'
Unfortunately, we cannol ask this question of "Uncle Ben' or any of his immediate kin who are all dead.
Great great grandfather 'Mem' Gramling was a m()st energetic and unusual pioneering person. He was born near
Spartanburg, South Carolina, on October 12, IS 16. He grew up there, and married Mary WILSONon November
17,1838 at the age of 22 years. They had cleven children, the fifth of whom was my great grandmother, Mary E.
GRAMLING EUBANKS,horn March 12)848.
Quoting 'Uncle Ben" (Benjamin Madison, son of Benjamin M.) "The family has migrated from South Carolina to
many parts of the U.S.; Texas, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, and the
Dakotas.
"The Arkansas Gramlings for the most part :>TC descendants of Reuben Martin Gramling (1791 - 1865). Three of
his sons, Benjamin, Richard, and Thomas, migrated hefore Ihe Civil War to Alahama (Georgia?) afler a difficulty
between Benjamin Martin and his falher, Reuhen Martin. After two years, the three sons (and also their siSler,
Sally Gramling COTHERN and her children) moved to Arkansas in 1854 and were joined a few years later by their
father.
"They crossed Ihe Mississippi River al Belmont, Missouri, ncar East Prairie, and then via Charleston and Bloom·
field, Missouri, and on through Nigger W()ol Swamp. They crossed the St. Francis River at Chalk Bluff near Pig.
gOIl, Arkansas, in whal is now Clay County, then into Llwrencc County where they struck the old Jacksonport

Military Road and followed il to Sugar Creek Bollom ...... ." where 'Mem' decided to settle. Richard settled his
family near Walcott,(now Greene County) Arkansas, and Thomas located nearby.
"Mem' and Mary brought seven children to Arkansas with them, the fifth of which was great gran~mother Mary E.
Gramling Eubanks. After seWing in their new home they had four more children. "Mem's" finn wIfe, Mary Wtlson
Gramling died on May 26, 1870.
'Mem" then married a second lime 10 Martha Wood on August 21, 1870. They had no children. Martha Wood
Gramling, "Mem's" second wife died August 1, 1874. This is a significam date.
'Mem" appa~ently could not.Sland 10 be alone. DeSiring comp~nionship, again he married soon after the. death of
his second Wife. This thIrd WIfe was a Widow, Martha Jane RobInson, who had been mamed 10 a "Mr. Pnce", then
deceased. Three more children were born to "Mem" and Manha Jane. They were Benjamin Madison (1876 - 1945),
David While (1878 1945), and Thomas Wise (1880 - 1882).
Now, here is the astonishing part of this slOry for me. For several years I have pored over the possible fate of my
great grand parents, EUBANKS. I knew from hearing grandmother, Armina Jane Eubanks Wilfiams, tell stories of
her childhood, that she, her younger sister, Susan, and still younger brother, Benjamin Eubanks, had lived with
their grandfather hecause their mother and father were dead. I did not remember grandmother discussing the fate
of her parents. This was a period about the mid 1870's. What could possibly have happened to take both young
parents, I wondered as I continued searching for information.
Then came the rest of the story after I began to compare and sift through data supplied by Mr. Shewmaker.
The summer of1874 brought a plague of typhoid fever which threatened to wipe out the entire family of great great
grandfather "Mem". First of the Gramling family to die "''liS my great grandmother:
(1) Mary E. Gramling Euhanks on July 6,1874 at age 26.
(2 Allison Gramling, Mem's #11 child, July 12, 1874 at age 14.
(3 William O. Gramling, Mem's #4 son, July 20, 1874 at age 29.
4 Ellen, Wife of William 0., July 23, 1874 at age 24.
5 Martha Eubanks, Mary E.'s sister, ] uly 25. 1874 at age 19.
6 Henry Gramling, Mem's #6 Child, Aug 1, 1874 at age 24.
7) Martha Wood Gramling, Mem's 2nd wife, Aug 2,1874 at age 37.
1
Seven memhers of "Mem's" family gone in less than a month! What must this man have been thinking? What could
he possibly have done to rise ahove this tragedy and despair when he was 58 years old! He was certainly resilient as
well as kind and caring, for he look in thc thrcc young Euhanks grand children; grandmother Armina Jane Eubanks
(WILLIAMS) age seven, Susan Eubanks (WILLIAMS), age four, and little brother, Benjamin Eubanks, age three.
This typhoid epidemic took all of "Mem's" immediate family still at home, including his wife. Alter taking in the
young children of his daughter, Mary Gramling Euhanks, he married again for the third time, as previously stated,
to Martha Jane Rollinson Price on Decemher 24,1874. Martha Jane was a widow who had a baby daughter less
than a year old when her Price hushand died and whcn she married 'Mem". This baby daughter, Lula Price,] grew
up with the Eubanks children.
But there was more tragedy in store to try this sturdy "Mcm' Gramling.
In April 1876, a son, Benjamin Madison was horn to "Mem' and Martha Jane. Two years later in July of 1878,
another son, David White was horn to them. After another two years, a final son, thomas Wise was born in
August 1880. All three of these sons, although much younger than the Eubanks children and step daughter, Lula
Price, were never-the-less, still uncles to the Eubanks chIldren who were older Ihan their uncles. Things were
looking beller for old 'Mem" as he shepherded his new and growing family through the balance of the 1870 decade.
Fate decreed that tragedy should strike again in the summer of 1881 when young grandson, Benjamin Eubanks,
now age nine, was out in the field when a sudden Ihundcr storm loomed On the horizon. When it began to shower,
Benjamin took sheller under the friendly branches of a huge Oak tree. Lightning flashed across the sky and the
thunder peeled through the hayous as Benjamin tried to swy warm and dry. Then came a blinding nash of fire from
the heavens, rending that old Oak Ircc, and takingyct anothcr life from 'Mem'.
The following year, 1882. waS to tesl and hurt old "Mem" yet anolher time. In August, his youngest son, Thomas
Wise Gramling was IwO years old. The following mOnlh, lillIe Thomas was Jilaying with othcr children on a porch
scat when he fell to the floor, striking his head a SCVefC hlow, which resulted in his death the next day, September
15,1882.
Benjamin M. "Mem" Gramling was as lough as they come. He was a true pioneer who was willing to risk aU against
the hardships and death threatening weslern wilderness. He continued to live oUl his life in the beautiful Crowley's
Page 120 - Volume 29, Numher 3· SCl'lemoer 1<)9
Ridge foothills, outJivin~ many of his younger children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces and other relatives, succumbing finally to the Gnm Reaper atthc age of78 years of Love, Joy, Toil, and Tears, He lies buried in his grave
at Owen's Chapel Cemetery, Greene County, Arkansas.
Can vou now understand why I said that I have been on an incredible journey this past summer. Piecing together
this story of the joys and sorrows in the life of my great great grandfather was a privilege. I now feel that fknow
grandfather 'Mem' a lillie heller, and knowing him lifts my own life up a lillie higher. Who eould ask for a more
remarkable journey?
But what about great grandfather EUBANKS? We now know about great grandmother Mary E. GRAMLING
EUBANKS, that she died in the typhOid epidemic of 1874 at age 26. Did her husband die in the same plague'! Did
he die before or afler Mary's death? If he did not die until after Mary's death, Ihen why did his children go to live
with their grandfather 'Mem'? Troubling questions are raised about this man - a man about whom we know sO
little.
What facts do we have to try to unravel this punle?
From U.S. Census records we know that there arc two EUBANKS families listed in Greene County in 1860 with
possible candidates for great grand father Eubanks. The Eubanks families live in adjacent dwellings 250 and 251
which are also adjacent neighbors to 'Mem' Gramling, dwelling number 249. This arrangement of dwellings is
significant since two of the Gramling girls married two Eubanks boys, All arc listed on a single page 44, Cache
TownShip, Greenc County, Crowley Post Office, enumerated July 20,1860.

This is an excellent 'snap-shot' of"Mem's' family in July 1860 a few years after coming to Arkansas from South
Carolina where he, his wtfe, and 5 of his children were born. But note that the family tradition about his coming by
way of Alabama and/or Georgia "where he spent about two years' appears to be born out by the reported births of
two of his children in Georgia, while his last child was born in Arkansas.
But wait, Gramling family tradition says 'Mem' and his brothers came to Arkansas in 1854, and this Is not supported by this Census record that shows Sarah, age 3, born in Arkansas while Martha, age 5, is born in Georgia. If this
information is correct, then 'Mem' must havc arrived in Arkansas more Ihan Ihree years allo (1857) and less than
five years ago (1855), My guess is that he, his brothers, and his sister arrived in Arkansas m 1856 - not in 1854 as
stated in family lore,

'This is the person that I believe to be my greal grandfather EUBANKS. I suspect that John's age was closer to ten
than to nine at the time of the census. Since the census was enumerated on July 20, 186(J, his birthday was probably
between August and December,
This Eubanks family was born mostly in Georgia. The births indicate that they came to Arkansas before one year
ago(1859)and after three years ago(1857). It would "ppear that this Eubanks family were friends or acquaintances
of the Benjamin M. "Mcm" Gramling familywhiJe perhaps living nearby in Georgia. They apparently decided to
follow the Gramlings to Arkansas a year afler the Gramlings went there, Perhaps through correspondence the

Gramlings convinced the Eubanks that there were greater opportunities in this new land in Arkansas than in the

"For a time I thought that this might be my great grandfather EUBANKS until I discovered additional information,
more about which I will relate later. This Gramling family profile does not tell us as much as we would like to know
because the father is older. We do not know how many older children were in the familv that have left by the year
1860. For example, is the A. Eubanks (age 33, above) a son of James and Francis or 1s he possibly a brother of
James?
Since both James and Francis were born in S.c. it is possible that they knew the Gramlings there, then moved to
Georgia where son A. was born 33 years ago. These Eubanks could have bcen the reason, through correspondence,
for the three Gramling brothers coming to Georgia from South Carolina before deciding to go on to Arkansas. We
know with certainty that James and Francis lived in Georgia for at least 19 years which is the age of Charles F. who
was born there.
.
Also 10 be noted is the name of James' daughtcr, .. Armina. This is the same name given 10 my grandmother
Armina Jane Eubanks Williams. James' daughter's name was undoubtedly the inspiration for naming Grandmother
Williams. Armina was nO! a very common given name which lends added weight to my theory about the Eubanks.
My conclusion, until proven otherwise, is that A. Eubanks waS an older brother of Charles F. Eubanks, and son of
James, and that both above Eubanks families came to Arkansas together about 1857 or 1858 from Georgia and
settled near their former neighbor and friend, "Mcm" Gramling, who they certainly knew in Georgia and probably
even knew in South Carolina. No doubt thosc childhood sweethearts, Mary Gramling and John Eubanks were
happy to be living near each other again after being separated for a year. If this conjecture is correct, then I have
found my great great grandfather, A. Eubanks, and my great great great grandfather, James Eubanks. I shall try to
confirm this theory now hy doing more research on records in Georgia and South Carolina.
Now to finish the slOry about John Eubanks: In the 1870 MORTALITY SCHEDULES OF ARKANSAS, there is
listed a John C. EUIIANKS, age 20, white male, married, born in Georgia, died in Greene County, Arkansas of
pneumonia in January 1870. Recognizing that he is listed here as John C. and elsewhere as John G., I still believe
this to be one and the same man. The coincidence is too great as all of the other elements arc correct.
So this is the reason grandmother Armina Jane Eubllnks WILLIAMS and her sister and brother had to go 10 live
with grandfather "Mem" after their mother died in the typhoid epidemic four years later. Mary E, Gramling Eubanks had already been a widow for four years when she, herself, was struck down with the dreaded ·FEVER".
Can you imagine a more exciting adventure than bringing 10 life beforeJour very eyes, forefathers as far back in
time as several generations removed. You get to know them through har work in research. They almost spring to
life and breathe again - even speak 10 you. I have only one regret in rcconslructing this narrative, and thatts that I

Report on the AGS Certificate Program____________
By Desmond Walls Allen
Arkansas Genealogical Society announced a program earlier this year to issue Certificates of
Arkansas Ancestry to recognize descendants of Arkansas' early settlers. Certificate categories
are; Territorial - a resident of Arkansas before 15 June 1836; Antebellum - a resident of Arkansas before 6 May 1861; and Nineteenth Century - a resident of Arkansas before 31 December
1900. Applicants must first request an application booklet which contains forms and directions
for applying for the certificate. The process is much like submitting an application for a lineage
~ociety but the only photocopy of a document required is that piece of evidence proving Arkansas residency. Application booklets are available upon request from the certificate chairman,
Desmond Walls Allen, 99 Lawrence Landing Road, Conway, AR 72032. Please include 52~ in
stamps for the return postage. The cost of a certificate is $10, payable when the completed
applica tion booklet is submitted. The application forms may be photocopied if an applicant
wishes to apply on behalf of more than one ancestor.
The material received by AGS for the certificate program will eventually be published in some
form or made available In a public facility for research purposes.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _,Arkansas Resource Directory
By Desmond Walls Allen
Arkansas Genealogical Society has a new r.roject of special interest to all researchers interested in Arkansas. AGS is going to com pIle and publish a directory of books and services
related to Arkansas. One obstacle genealogists must overcome when seeking information
about a published resource is finding the source from which a book can be published.
Books-in-Print is seldom helpful to family history researchers because books in our field
tend to be self-published, printed in short runs, and available from a variety of individuals
and small firms who cannot afford to saturate the market with expensive advertising. Thus, if
you are seeking a volume of marriage records on a particular county, where can you look to
find the compiler and source for the book? We'll have the answer for Arkansas when the
resource directory is published.
There will be no charge to individu;;ls and societies who wish to have their resources included. The directory, a service to members, will be sold for a price just above the cost of production. Publication, set for early spring, 1992, will be announced in the Arkansas Family
Historian.
We hope all groups, societies and individuals offering books and services about Arkansas
will wish to be included. Societies will be encouraged to submit information about membership, publications, and any other services they offer. Individuals with books for sale are
inVIted to list those which pertain to Arkansas. (No family histories, please.) Researchers
who offer research services about Arkansas are invited to include information about themselves. Libraries inside and outside Arkansas with collections of special interest to genealogists will be listed in the directory.
AGS products will have a prominent place in the directory - microfiche, books, Certificates
of Arkansas Ancestry and membership will be described. We want to tell the world about
Arkansas Genealogical Society and the high level of benefits to our members.
How can you be incl uded? A mailout to Arka nsas societies and libraries is planned for
August 1 so the forms should have been received by the time this issue of The Arkansas
Family Historian is mailed. Individuals with books for sale and researchers offering services
should write AGS, PO Box 908, Hot Springs, AR 71902-0908 for submission forms. The
forms contain additional information about the criteria for being included in the directory
but basically, anyone, AGS member or not, who has a book for sale about Arkansas reo
sources is welcome to be included.
If the directory is successfully received, it will be updated each year and remain in print. We
hope this directory will become the one-stop information center for folks interested in
Arkansas.

Two New AGS Indexes
--------------------------------------
By Desmond Walls Allen
Two new indexes to material published by Arkansas Genealogical Society are available and
we want you to know about them.
Arkansas Family Historian Consolidated Index 1981-1988
John Sanders of North Little Rock, AGS Board Member, has compiled a surname index to
The Arkallsas Family Historiall for the years 1981 - 1988. The purpose of the index is to
make research easier for those seeking information in back issues of our quarterly. The
price for the index is $12 postpaid. (182 pages, spiral bound) We appreciate John Sanders'
work on this tedious task of indexing.
In conjunction with publication of this index, Arkansas Genealogical Society has reprinted
all the back issues of Tile Arkallsas Family Historial! on microfiche. (Microfiche are 4" X 6"
plastic cards with images of pages stored in reduced format. A microfiche reader, available
at most libraries, is necessary to view the material or print paper copies from the fiche. On a
reader, microfiche produce a negative view of the information, that is the page background
is dark and the letters are light.)
Consolidated Indexes to AGS Family Group Sheet Series and Ancestor Chart
Series
Edsel F. Voyles of Conway, has compiled a surname index to two series of materials published by AGS from 1975 throu~h 1983 under the editorial leadership of Elaine Weir Cia.
The index is $8.00 postpaid, spIral bound, and contains a pocket to hold the fiche of the
family group sheet series and/or ancestor chart series (which may be purchased separately see fiche pnce list).
Sixteen volumes of family group sheets and twenty·six volumes of family group sheets were
published in the two series and they contain a great deal of information. The addresses for
submitters will, in many cases, be long out of date and many of the sheets have no source
citations, but, nevertheless, the information may be just the clue a researcher needs. Each
individual volume has a surname index bllt the consolidated index makes the search much
faster.
After the AGS Board of Directors made the decision to microfilm AGS materials and sell
microfiche, the question arose about preserving the ancestor chart series and family group
sheet series and it was decided to offer them for sale as inexpensively as possible on fiche.
Then Ed Voyles volunteered to compile a consolidated index to the material and we are
indebted to him for his labor.
These two indexes will make access to AGS materials easier and faster. We hope you will
consider purchase of the indexes or recommend them to your local library. A price list for
AGS microfiche is included in the back of this issue, or you may write for a fiche price list
(SASE please).

-------------------------------Queries
General guidelines for submitting queries:
1) Queries are limited to members only
2) Please submit no more than one query
per calendar year
3) Keep the query to approximately fifty
words
4) Neatness counts! If possible, type,
double spaced. Otherwise print legibly,
leave a space between each line
5) Capitalize Surnames
Remember the 4 Ws:
Who - Give complete names of interest
What - What do you want? Keep it short
and to the point
Where - LOCALITY IN ARKANSAS?
When - Give a time period
Since we always work with a large b~cklog
of queries, we strive to pn.nt them In the
order in which they are receIved. It may be
several months however, before your query
appears. We d~ use all queries received in a
calendar year before the end of that year.
We continue to receive queries with no name
and address included. If query gets separated
from the envelope, we cannot use them. It
simplifies the work of the all-volunteer st~ff
of this publication if you send your quenes
with your membership fee, to the Arkansas
Genealogical Society, PO Box 908, Hot
Springs, AR 71902-0908.

The following are reviews and/or announcements of book acquisitions for the
Arkansas Genealogical Society. These
books are premanently housed at the
Arkansas History Commission, or in the
local History and Genealogy Room of the
Little Rock Public Library. The Society
expresses its appreciation to the authors and
contributors. In ordering copies of these
books, please remember to say you saw the
review in this publication!
The Patriots at Kings Mountain, by Bobby
Gilmer ~oss, 519 Batchelor Drive, Blacksburg, SC 29702. Softbound, 6 x 9", 317 pp,
$25.00 plus $1.50 postage. Dr. ~oss
searched official records for references to
the battle of Kings ~ountain, and also used
earlier compiled lists as reference for
names. This is an alphabetical listing of
each proven Patriot at Kings ~ountain, with
information found concerning each man
with source cited. He rejected those names
supported only by tradition or those which
appeared in lists he could not document.
The result is a purified list of participants at
this battle. He has, however, included the
balance of names on a list of possible participants at the battle, or on a list of participants in the campaign (not the battle). This
is an excellent source of documented information concerning the particulars of this
battle declared to be the turning point of the
American Revolution in the South. The
author, one of the leading historians in the
area, is Professor Emeritus at Limestone
College, Gaffney, Sc. (BJ~)
The Chronicles of Milwaukee (VVisconsin), a narrative history of the town from its
earliest period to the present, A. C. VVheeler. This chronicle begins with ~ilwaukee's
origins in the wilderness; Indians made their
home here in 1785, and much of the future
town site was originally under water. In
1832, the Sauk Indian VVar broke out and
most of the Indians were removed "beyond
the ~ississippi"; white settlers took advantage of the tamed country and flocked into
the area. By 1837 the population of ~il
waukee was between six and seven hundred.
Reading this interesting history one learns
about the growth pangs of a mid-western
city, including: altercations between whites
and Indians, murder, establishment of a
newspaper and harbor, the hard times of
1837, road and bridge building, elections,
churches and more. A brief description of
~ilwaukee in 1861 is covered in a 25 page
chapter. An 1861 reprint, 303 pp., paper,
$22.50. Order from Heritage Books, Inc.,
1540-E Pointer Ridge Place, Suite 300,
Bowie, ~D 20716 (BJ~)
In Search of Your German Roots A complete Guide to Tracing your Ancestors in
the Germanic Areas of Europe by Angus
Baxter, 128 pp., indexed, paperback 1991,
$10.95. The author has updated his classic
text, presenting for the first time a manual
for genealogical research in a united
Germany. Not only does this updated edition reflect changes brought about by unification; the entire work has been revised and
updated, and it is now the most current and
com prehensive guide to German roots
available. It is designed to help you trace
your German ancestry in all the Germanspeaking areas of Europe, from the Baltic to
the Crimea, from Czechoslovakia to Belgium. It shows you how to conduct your
research by correspondence; how to work in
your own home, using the resources of libraries and archives or the records of church
and state. Order from Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. 1001 N. Calvert St., Baltimore, ~D 21202. (BJ~)
Anglo-Americans in Spanish Archives, List
of Anglo-American Settlers in the Spanish
Colonies of America by Lawrence H.
Feldman, 349 pp., indexed, cloth. 1991,
$30.00. A large portion of colonial America
was once under Spanish control; between
1766 and 1784 Spain consolidated its
domination, claiming jurisdiction over all or
part of what is now the states of Louisiana,
Florida, ~ississippi, Alabama, Arkansas,
and ~issouri. Spain opened this area to

settlement and encouraged people to take
up the land. When early in the 19th century
this territory came under U. S. jurisdiction,
the records of the colonial administration
were sent to Cuba, then to Seville, Spain,
where they were housed in various archives.
The papers relating to the administration of
Spanish-American colonies - census lists,
militia, landowners, etc. are in Seville. The
author has extracted the names of about
7,000 Anglo-American settlers, arranging
them in tabular format by state. This data is
totally inaccessible to the American reo
searcher. Rescued from almost total oblivi·
on, the book has an informative introduc·
tion to Spanish archives and a complete
index of names. Order from Genealogical
Publishing Co., Inc. 1001 N. Calvert St.,
Baltimore, MD 21202-3897. (B1M)

contains a coml?lete index to the Arkansas
folks who submItted claims to the Southern
Claims Commission following the War
Between the States. The issue describes the
commission, the location of the case files,
content, and access to the records. It gives a
county-by-county list of the Arkansas claimants with information about two sources
which contain the complete index to all
states. A map illustrates the number of
claims filed per county. While many researchers have heard in general about these
case files, this issue of the newsletter describes the step-by-step process of acceSSing
the records. To request a copy of this issue,
send $2 plus 52¢ postage to PGA, PO Box
1807, Conway, AR 72032. (BJM)
The By-Name Index to the Centennial
History of Arkansas, compiled by Lewis E.
Roberts, 12014 NE 140th Street, Kirkland,
WA 98034; $32.50 hardbound plus $2.50
shipping. This wonderful compilation is an
every name index to Dallas T. Herndon's
excellent three-volume history of Arkansas
published in 1922. Herndon's first volume in
the series is a general history of Arkansas
but it emphasizes the people who shaped
Arkansas. Volumes two and three are
Goodspeed-like collections of biographical
sketches. Centennial History is widely available in libraries and still in print (Southern
Historical Press). This index opens up that
series to family historians. It lists 37,876
entries including women indexed by maiden
as well as married names. The index is
arranged in three sections, one for each
volume in the original work. No library with
Arkansas materials should be without
Herndon's history and this impressive index.

A copy of Family Tree Maker software with
a demonstration disk has been sent to AGS
by Banner Blue Software, Inc., 39500 Stevenson Place, Ste. 204, Fremont, CA 94539.
The program runs on DOS based computers and produces family tree charts. Retail
price of the program is $59.95. The program
IS designed to draw charts in several formats. It is not a full featured genealogical
database but with proposed a GEOCOM
import utility, it could be an interesting tool
for producing chart formats not found in
other programs. The most significant deficiency is the program's total lack of SDurce
citation input. - (OWA)

Cherokee by Blood Records of Eastern
Cherokee Ancestry in the U. S. Court of
Claims, 1906-1910, Volume 7, Applications
16,746.20,100 by Jerry Wright Jordan, 490
pages, indexed, paper, $25.00. In 1904 the
Eastern Cherokees won a million dollar
judgment against the U. S. because of its
violations of the treaties of 1835-36 and
1845. The payments were to go to all Jiving
persons who had been members of the
Eastern Chrokee tribe a t the time of the
treaties, or to their descendants if they were
deceased. Over 46,000 people filed claims.
This volume presents detailed abstracts of
the applications numbered 16,746 to 20,100,
includmg numerous verbatim transcriptions
of affidavits by the applicants, their families
and friends. Since most of the applications
were descendants, and had to prove their
descent, the quantity of genealogical information in this volume is impressive, A
random check reveals a number of applica·
tions filed from applicants living in Arkansas; among them Caldonia E. Anible, Van
Buren, AR, Mary M. Chandler, Hensley,
AR, Sarah Wood and W. N. Nelson, Union·
town, AR and Elijah H. Bean, Fort Smith,
AR. Published by Heritage Books, Inc.
