TAKAPUNA is a 34m sailing yacht listed for
sale by Neal Esterly in San Diego. Last year
she finished a near world circumnavigation
but the most interesting part was the 18
months she spent in the South Pacific.
Pamela Stephenson-Connolly (the wife of
the Scottish comedian, Billy Connolly) is the
owner. Her great-grandfather was Robert
Louis Stevenson who wrote “Treasure Island”
and TAKAPUNA was her first boat. After
purchasing her she did a minor refit and sailed
to the South Pacific to re-trace the passage
of her grandfather. She wrote and published
a book about the experience: “TREASURE
ISLANDS” which is an interesting read
about places that a “white boat” has not
been seen for many years. An emotional
and exciting adventure for a relatively
inexperienced owner.
Dennis Frederiksen – New Amels 212
Another major new build project with Dennis Frederiksen of Fraser
Yachts Monaco is the new Amels 212, Project 6501 (65.50m). The
exterior design is by Tim Heywood and the interior is by Andrew
Winch. This is a winning combination for this very experienced
Russian client, who already has several new build projects under his
belt. The Amels 212 is being designed for worldwide cruising with a
delivery date of January 2011.

Bombardier Jets - The Superbowl
During the 2008 SUPERBOWL we were invited to BOMBARDIER’s
Touchdown Celebration in Glendale, Arizona. The event took place
from Thursday January 30th to Monday February 4th and was another
opportunity for us to work alongside partner companies including
Bombardier Jets, Maybach and Capella Resorts. The event was held in
the main hangar of Glendale Lux Air, an executive (non commercial)
airport about 2 miles from The Superbowl, giving jet owners easy and
swift access to the game.

John Solomon New Sales Broker, Monaco
Fraser Yachts is delighted to announce the arrival of John Solomon
into the Fraser Yachts Sales Team, based in Monaco. He comes
with an extremely impressive and varied background in the luxury
yachting industry. John has held management positions since 1992
and ran his own brokerage business, “Watermarques”, started
in 2000. Over the years he’s dealt with a great variety of marine
businesses around the world and developed a solid and trustworthy
reputation within the yachting industry.

year, David Legrand has
changed position in the
company and decided
to face a new challenge.
David is a very well-known
face at Fraser Yachts and
throughout the luxury
yacht industry. He led our worldwide charter division where he
was instrumental in the development of our charter fleet, team
of brokers and the considerable growth of our business. David’s
dynamism and passion for yachts are very evident to all who
meet him.
His passion for the sea actually started very early in life. As a
young man, David logged over 100,000 miles at sea, including
twelve Atlantic Ocean crossings. He also spent 3 years running
his own charter company and also a shipyard. This experience
provided him with a strong nautical and technical background
enabling him also to quickly get to grips with the commercial
side of yachting. This spurred him on to work in the world of
Vassilis Fotilas – Trainee Broker
Program, Monaco
Vassilis Fotilas recently joined Fraser Yachts, following two years
with Ekka Yachts S.A. in Greece. Ekka Yachts is the Ferretti Group
dealer and is the only dealership in the world carrying all nine of
the Ferretti Group yacht brands. Vassilis speaks fluent Greek and
perfect English and will be working alongside Richard Earp as
he develops his knowledge and understanding of the superyacht
industry. His appointment is part of the Fraser Yachts trainee
broker program whereby younger brokers with solid experience in
the smaller boat market work alongside highly experienced and
respected superyacht brokers to hone their skills and knowledge.

Azimut yachts. ACC is now a thriving division of Fraser Yachts
with operations across the world.
After serving on the Fraser Yachts Board of Directors and after
four years on the Board of the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers’
Association (MYBA), David has now decided to develop his true
passion, sales. His unique background and energy will stand
him in good stead for success in this new field. He combines
commercial know-how and yachting skills, an extensive
worldwide network of contacts and in-depth knowledge of the
industry with an unbridled love for the sea. Fraser Yachts is
pleased to announce his move to the sales team where he will
now operate as a sales broker.

This year visitors had the opportunity to have a close look at luxury
yachting at the Hampton Classic for the first time. Fraser Yachts were
available on site over the course of the whole week for anyone who

Mr Paolo Vitelli, President of the Azimut I Benetti group
has decided to join the Azimut Charter Club (ACC) with
his own Azimut 103S delivered in May 2008. The yacht
will be fully managed and chartered by ACC under the
‘Guaranteed Program’. With her amazing lines, deep
Bordeaux red hull and a fly bridge, this Azimut yacht

MY Let It Be - New Charter Yacht

MY Let It Be is the latest exciting addition to our exclusive charter fleet.
She is 47.7m (156’.6”), was built in 2007 and has a full-displacement steel
hull with an aluminium super-structure. This beautiful Heesen cruises
at 14 knots and is named after the famous Beetle song,. The spacious
interior of MY Let It Be is furnished throughout with a combination of
semi-gloss cherry and walnut wood, copper accents, marble floors and
colourful upholstery creating a warm yet contemporary ambiance.
The forward area on the main deck accommodates the owner’s ensuite stateroom and private study. The lower deck accommodates a VIP
cabin, 2 Queen cabins and a twin cabin. MY Let It Be has 3 decks for
relaxing. The main deck aft has a cocktail area which provides a perfect
welcome onboard the yacht; the upper deck aft has a large exterior
dining arrangement (for 12) and the sundeck is furnished with a Jacuzzi,

Gerrard Harvey–
New Director of
Yacht Management
Originally from
Christchurch New Zealand,
Gerrard joined the Royal
New Zealand Navy in 1971
after completing High
School education at Marist
Brothers in Palmerston North. In 1987 Gerrard was
awarded the MBE by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth for
service to the Royal New Zealand Navy. In December1992
he resigned from the Navy to take up the position of
Director Marine Operations with Blue Lagoon Cruises
a South Pacific based boutique cruise line operator. At
the time of his resignation from the Royal New Zealand
Navy, Gerrard held the rank of Commander and was the
Director Marine Engineering, Director Naval Engineering
Plans and Commanding Officer of HMNZS Wakefield
at Defence Headquarters in Wellington. In 1995 some
eighteen months after joining the Blue Lagoon Cruises
management team, Gerrard was promoted to the position
of CEO. One year later he was invited to join the Board
of Directors of the company and assumed the position
as CEO & Managing Director of Blue Lagoon Cruises.
We are delighted that he has now joined Fraser Yachts,
overseeing the entire Yacht Management team worldwide.
Italian Shipyard Tour
Fraser News
Just after the Monaco show Fraser Yachts organized a “New
Construction Tour” for the Sales Brokers. This time Italy was
on the agenda having been in Germany and The Netherlands
earlier in the year. Besides touring the shipyards we undertook
some formal training and updating on specifications,
contracts, building technology, product development, project
management and the role of the broker during a new build
project. The market is changing rapidly and we are seeing an
increasing demand from owners asking for support during
new construction. We visited Benetti, Perini Navi, CRN and
ISA covering different types of yachts including power and sail,
series and custom, composite, steel and aluminum. We aim
to constantly improve our knowledge and skill-base and inhouse training is a crucial part of our strategy to remain the
industry experts.
Dennis Frederiksen – New Benetti 251
A new 56.00m, Benetti 251 Project has been taken on by Dennis
Frederiksen, of Fraser Yachts Monaco. One of his long standing Irish
clients was initially looking to build a 52 metre Benetti but during
negotiations changed his mind for the Benetti 56 metre. The project
surveyor is Patton Marin, who will work closely with the entire team
until the delivery in June 2010.

brings with her a rich
history of multi cultural
and international experience from a variety of industries including
cruise, tourism, and high-end retail. She has lived and traveled in
over 65 countries, and speaks French and German in addition to her
native English. Lania has a proven ability to lead strategic initiatives
with 20 years in marketing, operations, revenue enhancement and
international business development.
Tribu’ – New Charter Yacht
Tribu’ is a true custom-built yacht with plain and unembellished exteriors
that belie the sophisticated modernist interior. She’s a rarity among today’s
recent launches, an avant-garde interior that combines physical comfort with
an eclectic, austerely modernist appearance with no hint of pretension. She
has been designed to meet her owner’s every wish and requirement from the
vast salon divided into separate areas to the upper deck’s extensive owner’s
suite, comprising office, bedroom, bathroom, gymnasium and sauna.
Julian Calder – New Haakvoort
Having been greatly impressed with the successful
management of his 40m yacht under the experienced
eyes of Roberto Migliaccio and Alan Armstrong
a five time yacht owner recently expressed his
desire to upgrade to a bigger yacht. Despite having
built several yachts without a broker involved, the
client’s experience of the professionalism of Fraser
Yachts’ management team persuaded him that he
would undoubtedly benefit from our brokerage

services. Just 3 months after their first meeting,
It was a busy second half to 2007 in our Monaco Yacht Management
under construction, negotiated the price, technical
office and what has been particularly pleasing is the renewed yacht
management contracts for both Nou Nou V (to be renamed Nanook)
and Freemont, both of which have been sold to new Owners. We
have also been awarded the Management of Axioma – a 47 metre ISA
which is a sistership to Ellix Too. It took nearly two years from the first
meeting with the owner’s representative until the final signature but
we are delighted to be working with them closely throughout 2008
and beyond. We also list the yacht for chartering and she is currently
in the Maldives.
Contracts have also been signed for Allegro – a newbuild Benetti
Classic due for delivery in April 2008 and Sanoo a 40 mtr CRN. We
have been involved in two very interesting and unusual repairs. On
one yacht a stabilizer fin was replaced in-water off Gibraltar, causing
minimal disruption to that yacht’s schedule, while another yacht
suffered a badly bent propeller blade such that one shaft could not
be used. Again this was repaired with full Classification Approval,
in-water, this time in the Maldives. The repair work utilised the very
latest techniques, much more common in the “commercial” shipping
world than in yachting, where the general reaction would likely be
that the yacht would have required docking. Both these repairs were
carried out by UMC, a company based near Southampton
and which is actually a subsidiary of V.Ships one of the Fraser
Yachts shareholders.
Julian Calder, Hein Velema and Antonio Pozzi had
located an appropriate yard with a yacht already
specifications and Building Contract, selected a new
interior designer, revised the General Arrangement
and agreed the price of all required changes. Fraser
Yachts were able to witness the signatures as the
client took over the existing build contract for a 50m
Haakvoort currently in build at the Monnickendam
yard. The client subsequently chose to appoint Fraser
Yachts’ Director of New Construction, Antonio Pozzi
to manage the build. This is testament to the benefits
that the Fraser Yachts’ team brings with its one-stopshop service approach.

KEIKI KAI is a stunning Benetti Tradition sold approximately one year
ago by Neal Esterly in San Diego. A young entrepreneur from Santa
Barbara purchased the boat, his first large yacht, with plans to travel the
world. On board are his wife, two young children, plus a good friend with
his wife and their 18 month old child. With the full complement of crew,
it can sometimes get pretty crowded! They plan to live on board for
two or three years. After a kick off trip in the Caribbean, they have been
cruising the Med this summer & autumn. A great experience with many

Duncan Bray
– New Manager at The Crew Network, Antibes
Duncan Bray recently made the transition back across the pond after seven years in the USA.
A football scholarship back in 2001 provided an opportunity lucrative enough to leave the
Shetland Isles in Scotland for the American Midwest. Following graduation he moved to the
Florida Keys to teach sailing before settling in Fort Lauderdale. The yachting industry had always
appealed and he soon found himself working with The Crew Network as a Crewing Consultant.
After almost two years in Florida, Duncan is now heading up the Antibes team as manager and is
very much looking forward to a busy and successful year.

Porsche, he demolished his rivals
with the legendary 917. At Audi,
he came up with the Quattro and,
at VW, he paid peanuts for the
Bugatti name before spending big
money on the development of the
Veyron. Although Piech initially
proposed an eighteen-cylinder
engine, he eventually settled for
the W-16, which is composed of
two 4.0 litre W8 units. But the
monosyllabic Austrian would not
compromise on his performance
targets. Maximum power had

As The Crew Network gets set to embark on its
next wave of growth, director Ian Pelham reflects
on the highs and lows of recruitment at sea.
I
t may just be a coincidence, or quite simply a case of being in the
right place at the right time, but in the five years since Ian Pelham
joined The Crew Network (TCN) the company has gone from being

one of the smallest crew recruitment businesses, to the largest with
the best reputation in the industry. And how exactly have they
managed this? Customer service, customer service, customer
service, says Ian.
“I definitely got on board at a very good time, just as TCN’s growth
accelerated,” he says. “Which is largely down to our company-wide
focus on client and crew satisfaction — without crew, we don’t
have a job.”
Following a serendipitous arrival into crew recruitment, when a
misplaced CV landed Ian his first role in cruise ship personnel
despite no previous experience and a background in finance, Ian
has been learning on the job ever since.
“I got to grips with cruise ship personnel by studying books,
supportive colleagues and basic trial and error,” admits Ian. “The
first three stewardesses I hired were fired within a matter of weeks!
But when I moved to Fraser Yachts in 2002 I found the difference
between the luxury yacht market and even high-end cruise lines
to be a real eye-opener, they are worlds apart in terms of client
expectations and you get to learn quickly that ‘good enough’ is
never good enough — it has to be the best.”

out of fashion, Heywood prefers to keep his
cards close to his chest and actively chooses
not to sneak a peak at the opposition. “I
want to innovate and be original,” he says,
“not simply mimic what someone else is
already doing. I trust my clients’ knowledge
and judgement to steer me towards what
it is that they’re after in the brief, and that
way I can create a design that is new and

as well.”

Compared to 20 years ago when the average
size of a yacht was 50m, the super yachts
of today are averaging 80m in length, and
are kitted out with every new and exciting
feature imaginable. Boasting on-board
cinemas, millionaires recreational toys,
hospitals and, in some instances, six to ten
additional small boats, as well as, of course,
numerous guest cabins with en suite
bathrooms, the ‘today’s’ yachts are aweinspiring. And they’re set to get even more
jaw dropping as a new wave of opulent
wellness centres, spas, gyms and treatment
rooms come into demand.
But, according to Heywood, it’s not all as
prestige-related or gratuitous as it may
at first seem. “Most super-yacht owners
have connections with the cinema world,
whether they’re actors, invest in films, or
rent their yachts out on set, so it makes
sense for them to have a cinema, for
example, on board,” he says. “And a facility,
such as a helipad, which can be solely
perceived as glamorous, is actually of great
practical importance to an individual who
lives in a ‘cash rich, time poor’ world.”
Now working out of his East End London
offices, Heywood admits he fell into yacht
design by accident, having qualified in
industrial design engineering, which
focused on items produced for the mass
market. But with a string of success stories
from the yachting world under his belt, he
rather modestly puts his accomplishments
down to the confidence placed in him by
his clients.

“The design of a yacht is important, but a good design is timeless,” says Heywood. “Therefore, at the
point of conception, my primary concern is that the yacht performs its function, and that function is
to keep the client happy, it’s a personal, bespoke project. If you commission a pair of handmade shoes,
the reasoning behind it would be that they fit your feet exactly, the same applies to a yacht. That’s why I
encourage plenty of client input right from the beginning, so that they enjoy the experience, and I have
a clear understanding of what they want…and our rate of repeat business supports that point of view!”

Nearly 75% of our planet’s surface is covered in water and under this water

t is no wonder, therefore, that the underwater world has
caught the attention of the luxury yacht industry and opened up
a completely new market in small leisure submarines. Some of
the world’s most significant yachts carry small submarines, and if
designers get their way an increasing number will follow in the near
future. These manned submersibles have an excellent safety record
and are, surprisingly, statistically the safest form of transportation.
This is due in large part to the rigorous classification requirements
of the main classification societies and the fact that each year the
submarines must be thoroughly inspected by a surveyor in order to
maintain classification.
Although the present number of submarines on super-yachts is still
small, the demand is steadily growing. Octopus carries a ten-man

farmer’s son, born and educated in Cyprus, Andreas migrated to
London with his family in 1963 where he took a job as a deliveryman for the
then tiny Fleur de Lys Patisseries. “I started work as a driver,” says Andreas, “and
after about three years with the company my first big break came. The owner
put the business up for sale. I wanted it but did not have the money. Even so,
we agreed a price of £2,500 and the deal was done. We didn’t even bother with
a contract. Every Saturday I would send him an envelope with postal orders for
£10, £20 or even £30 until he was paid in full. It took a little time to pay, but it
got paid and we stayed the best of friends.”

Natasha, after my first granddaughter.”
Unfortunately, a life of waking up at five to

me was up for auction and so I thought,

Lauren and Altair were projects that made

greater ventures for the future. “I have
always bought yachts well and sold them
for more,” adds Andreas. “Also, I was always
interested in the biggest boats because I

here are a number of considerations to bear in mind before
your floating palace is ready for that transatlantic crossing. Also,
in the hectic world of the super-yacht owner, it is unlikely he or she
will see the time spent in making the crossing as ‘time well spent’. So
you are faced with an ownerless voyage, still needing a full crew, the
possibility of foul weather, plus an arrival time that is hard to predict,
causing conflict with your all important charter commitments. There
are also a number of purely economic considerations to take into
account. There is the crew cost, fuel is expensive, extra engine hours
mean more maintenance and the risk of poor weather affecting the
yacht exterior and indeed interior. Not really something the average
owner worries about when their vessel is cruising in the Caribbean
or Med.
So what is the alternative? The answer is Dockwise Yacht Transport

What are the highlights of being the
owner of Lulworth?
rush. All the events onshore are special too
It is a privilege to stand at the helm of what is
owners. And don’t forget that in addition to
potentially the fastest boat in the classic fleet.
Last season we reached 16.4 knots but the
records from the 1920s show that Lulworth is
capable of 22 knots. It is difficult to describe
how powerful she feels. I’ll never forget our
debut at the 2006 Argentario regatta, when
Lulworth raced in earnest for the first time in
76 years. We beat Cambria coming back and
repeated the performance against Mariette
the next. To cross the finishing line and hear
Cambria’s crew ringing out the ‘three cheers’
as their predecessors would have done in the
late 1920s was wonderful. As we have taken
Lulworth to new heights, I have never tired of
this experience.
From Cannes to St Tropez, Lulworth has
entered all the great regattas and always seems
to have a prime position in and out of port. I
love the exhilarating atmosphere. Having up
to 150 classic sail boats jostling for position on
a 300-metre long start line is a real adrenaline

What inspired you to take on this
monumental project?
I have always loved history and been fortunate
enough to help save some fine buildings from
demolition via my property development
business. Lulworth has an awesome history
and an unrivalled pedigree. However efficient
computer design may become, they don’t
design beautiful lines like this. And then you
have the colours of the wood, the bronze work
on deck… It’s all such a treat for the senses.
It is of course possible to ‘build’ one’s way I

in Manhattan Beach, Don read Biological Science at the University of California
before embarking on his 17-year career in the marine industry, 10 years of which
he has spent as captain. Don is married with two daughters. He was the Fraser
Yachts ‘Charter Captain of the Year’ in 2007 and presented with a Blancpain
timepiece (see below) during the ‘Captains’ Dinner’ at the Monaco Yacht Show.

What was your first ever voyage?
I can’t really recall my first ever voyage, so to
speak, but my first real open sea voyage was
from New Orleans to Honduras.
What is your most memorable
experience at sea?
Probably some of my most memorable
experiences have been rough trips on board
Janie (the super yacht that I currently captain),
simply due to the amount of time spent in rough
water. But, the trip up to Alaska through the
islands of the Inside Passage where you get to
see whales and sea lions is way up there on my
list of memorable experiences.
Where is your dream destination?
That’s a really difficult question to answer,
because everywhere at some point seems a
dream destination – if you stay in one place long
enough, eventually you yearn to be elsewhere.
But, if I had to pick one place, I’d say the Turks &
Caicos Islands in the Bahamas. It has one of the
longest coral reefs in the world, which makes it
great for diving.
What would you choose for your last
supper, where and with whom?
On board, what do you consider your
personal necessity/luxury?
Do you have an unfulfilled dream,
and what is it?
For me, with a family at home, it has to be our
on board high-speed Internet access with a web
cam, which enables me to speak to, and see
them, every night, unless I’m in the middle of
the ocean. Things have really come a long way
in a short period of time, and the WIFI access
we have on board Janie is a far cry from the
prohibitively expensive SatCom we used to
work with.
My last supper would be with my wife and two
daughters in the Turks & Caicos Islands, and
it would consist of cracked conch and grouper
fingers – two of my favourite specialities!
Early retirement!
What is your biggest regret and finest
achievement?
My biggest regret is not being at home more
for my family. The length of time that I’m away
varies greatly, but I’m currently on a threemonth stretch without seeing them, so it can get
tough. My finest achievement would have to be
becoming a father, twice!
