Hubert James Vinnicombe Payne was born in Otterton in 1884 to Stephen and Emily
Payne. They lived in a cottage called Waterhayes.
Family
Hubert’s Father was called
Stephen and his mother was
called Emily. He also had two
siblings called Venn and Alma.
When Hubert was older he
married Pollie Law and in
1914 had a girl called Phyllis.

Alma Alice Payne got married to Cecil
Charles Till and then lived at Ropers
farm Hubert lived with them for a while
after he left home. At 18 Alma was a
dressmaker and lived with her auntie
(Mary Ann Payne) who was a Honiton
lace maker. She was born on the 15th
December 1892 and she died in
March1982.
When Phyllis was born in 1914
she lived until she was 44
years of age on the 20th of
October 1956.

Because of the food rations in
the country they had to grow
food for their village.

Pollie Law
Pollie Law lived in Exmouth with her
family. She had her father (William)
who worked as a shipwright and her
mother (Sarah Jane) and her
siblings William, Mabel, Edith,
Annie and James Law.
Because of the Great War
Hubert had to work in a
munitions factory in
Scunthorpe unfortunately he
died in an explosion in1917.
Sadly in 1914 Hubert and
Pollie had a little girl called
Phyllis and she was only 3
when he died.
The family grave
There are a few graves for the Payne’s in Otterton grave yard. This one is for
Hubert, Pollie and Phyllis. Cecil Till, Alma’s husband, who also fought in the war was
buried in the grave next to Hubert’s grave. Alma is also buried in Cecil’s. The grave
says:
In ever loving memory

Dearly beloved husband of
Pollie Payne
Accidentally killed at Scunthorpe Lincs.
June 28th 1917
Aged 32 years.
We cannot Lord thy purpose see.
But all is well that’s done by thee.
Also of Pollie
His beloved wife
Who fell asleep June 5th 1937
Aged 51 years.
The labours of well spent life
End in a great reward.
And their daughter
Phyllis Gertrude
Passed away 20th Oct 1959
Aged 44 years.

census with Venn
helping and Hubert
was a brick layer.
1911 census. As well as the
Payne’s Mary Vinnicombe
lived with them as well.
Hubert left £277 8 shillings and
5 pence for Pollie.
All these pictures are in Otterton. All the dates are around the war.
