Another million-dollar sunset on Little Traverse Bay
is a perfect way to end your day in Petoskey.

If you approach Petoskey from the south on U.S. 131, there
is a moment when you crest the hill and get your first
glimpse of Little Traverse Bay and the town of Petoskey.
I remember the first time I took in that view more than 20
years ago, and this spectacular view still moves me today.

Family Fun
Today, that view symbolizes “home” and welcomes me back
from business trips and other journeys. I suspect it is also a
sense of home for our resorters, those people who return to
their summer cottages in and around Petoskey year after
year. But for those of you who just experienced, or are about
to experience, the glimpse of the bay for the first time, the
message says “you’ve arrived someplace very special.”

That specialness runs far deeper than the area’s natural
beauty. You’ll experience a service culture that has been
developed and nurtured for more than 100 years. We’ve been
greeting guests here since the 1880s. Those guests of
yesterday came for many of the same reasons you’re here
today: clean air, cool summer lake breezes, opulent views,
abundant recreation opportunities, quaint shops and fine
dining. Today’s guest gets an added bonus of enhanced
winter fun with the Midwest’s best downhill skiing.

Secrets
of the Petoskey Stone
FOR SOME IT’S THE THRILL
of the hunt. For others it’s finding a
unique souvenir, and for a few it’s
the wonder of holding history.
Hunting Petoskey Stones is a long
enduring tradition in the Little
Traverse Bay region. Easily identified
by sunburst hexagons covering their
surface, the pebble-like treasures
are actually fossilized coral dating
back 350 million years. These
remarkable geological marvels,
named the state stone in 1965, are
so loved there is a book and festival
dedicated solely to their honor.
Winter storms disturb lake
bottoms bringing up a fresh crop
along Little Traverse Bay, making
spring prime time for Petoskey
Stone hunters, but they can be
found anytime. Petoskey’s
Magnus Park and Bayfront Park
are favorite hunting grounds. So,
kick off the shoes. Dig your toes
in the sand and keep a sharp eye
out for the beautifully patterned
rocks at the water’s edge.
If you happen to come up
empty-handed, you can purchase
one of the beauties from many
local retailers. Often they are
polished and transformed into
jewelry, clocks and other
memorabilia.
A brush with history
Historic Districts bring the past to life
T
he sights and sounds of Petoskey’s
past are ever-present. Stroll its
downtown streets and it’s easy to
imagine the way it once was. Standing
between the historic brick buildings with
their carefully preserved facade
decorations, you can almost hear the
swish of the ladies’ long skirts as they
pass you by. Hear the train whistle blow
gently from the depot beside the bay,
heralding the arrival of summer resorters.
See a young man with his hands thrust
into his pockets slip into a pub to pass
the time playing a few games of pool. It’s
Ernest Hemingway, yet years away from
earning fame as a writer.
Petoskey’s downtown district wears its
past proudly. It’s a registered Historic
Site dating back to 1879, encompassing
10 blocks, all filled with the stories and
glories of yesteryear.
At the edge of the district, along the
waterfront, stands the original Chicago
and West Michigan Railroad depot. During
the late 1800s and early 1900s, the rails
and Lake Michigan steamers brought
thousands of visitors to the area from
Chicago, Milwaukee and other Midwest
cities, launching the tourism industry.
Among the early resorters were members
of the Bay View Association, a Chautauqua
community founded in 1875 by the United
Methodist Church. Bay View’s program
series featured prominent speakers,
including Helen Keller, Dr. Booker T.
Washington and William Jennings Bryan.
Nearly 450 Victorian cottages were built at
Bay View, which can be enjoyed today
through walking and driving tours.
Nearby is the Saint Francis Solanus
Mission, a living memory of pioneering
days. The small wooden church built in
1859 is the oldest public building in
northern Michigan south of the Mackinac
Straits. It served as the primary church
for Native Americans, the areas’ original
inhabitants and early settlers.
