Pastor’s Corner
My Dear Friends,
This weekend, we’ll be celebrating the last 5
of our 10 First Communion Masses at the
Basilica Shrine of St. Mary. It is such a joy
to see children celebrate this milestone in
their lives. It is also a great wake-up call for
each of to reflect on the gift of the Blessed
Sacrament that Jesus gave us over 2,000
years ago at the Last Supper.

I’m delighted to report that registration for 2015-2016 academic year at
St. Mary Catholic School is coming along great. Just yesterday, we
admitted 12 new students.
Many thanks go to St. Therese parish in Wrightsville Beach for their
donation to St. Mary School. Their contribution will help our special
initiative to increase the population of immigrant and children of
immigrant children and youth in St. Mary Catholic School.
As you may have read in a recent article in the (Wilmington) Star-News,
there is an abundance of “giving opportunities” in the Greater
Wilmington community. The article noted, however, that many of the
groups are targeting the same people. After all, there are only so many
people in our area. Thus, we who are “givers” are increasingly
challenged to stretch and expand the virtue of generosity in our lives.
Here at the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary, we have many giving
opportunities also. In the following weeks, you’ll hear more about some
of these. Today, I mention just one.
There is an anonymous donor who has pledged $60,000 toward the
$100,000 to build a Habitat for Humanity house.
This particular house will be dedicated to Pope
Francis. The donor has challenged the Catholic
community of our area to contribute the other
$40,000. We, at St. Mary, will raise $5,000 for
the cause. I’ll keep you posted as to how you can
contribute.

Come and see Pope Francis in Philadelphia at the World Meeting of
Families, where the Holy Father will become the fourth Pope to visit
the United States!
What is it? For the first time ever, the United States will host this international event of prayer, catechesis and celebration. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia, in cooperation with the city of Philadelphia, is
preparing to receive 10,000-15,000 participants from more than 152
nations. This historic event will begin on Sept. 22 with a four-day
Theological Pastoral Congress; it will conclude with a Papal Mass on

The guiding theme for the eighth World Meeting of Families has been
announced, Love is our Mission: The Family Fully Alive. There will
be keynote speakers translated into multiple languages and topical
presentation sessions in a variety of languages. Several of the keynote
addresses will be live-streamed. A world market, music and film festivals, as well as the hallmark festival of families will be among the
attractions during the Congress.
The official hymn for the 8th World Meeting of Families, “Sound the
Bell of Holy Freedom,” made its debut at the Mass for the 1st Sunday
of Advent celebrated by Archbishop Chaput, at the Cathedral Basilica
of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia.

Fifth Sunday of Easter
St. John Paul II's Theology of the Body with Father Michael Burbeck
Reverend Michael J. Burbeck, Parochial Vicar at St. Mark Catholic
Church, will chat with Carolina Catholic about St. John Paul II's Theology of the Body which is a term used to describe a series of talks
given by St. John Paul II from 1979 to 1984 on the topic of his integrated vision of the human person. These talks, often referred to as
"Human Love in the Divine Plan," beautifully describe St. John Paul
II's teaching on love, life, and human sexuality. His reflections are
based on Scripture and contain a vision of the human person truly
worthy of man. In this show, Father will also discuss how Natural
Family Planning respects and works with the theology of our bodies.
This show can be heard on Wilmington Catholic Radio's stations, 93.1
FM and 91.7 FM, the first two weekends of May, Saturdays at 11 a.m.
and Sundays at 6 p.m. That's Saturday, May 2nd and 9th, at 11 a.m.
and Sunday, May 3rd and May 10th, at 6 p.m.You may also hear this
show on our website at www.wilmingtoncatholicradio.com by clicking on the Carolina Catholic tab. Thank you for your support of Catholic radio.
Week #2: Reflections on Human Dignity:
We are One Family Under God
God grant us the ability to see the human dignity of all our brothers and sisters regardless of their country of origin.
The Catholic Church proclaims that human life is sacred and that the dignity
of the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for society. The
Church has an abiding concern about human life from conception until natural
death; the lives of migrant children do not somehow fall outside the Church’s
commitment to protect and nurture life at all its stages. Consequently, children
who are fleeing violence and seeking safety should be given due process
under the law and provided the necessary screenings to ensure that they will
be given the help necessary to ensure their well-being.
Go to http://www.justiceforimmigrants.org/index.shtml to learn more about the
migrant children fleeing their countries.
Want to enrich your spiritual and social life? You are invited to join us

Fifth Sunday of Easter
I always appreciate the fact that our Liturgy celebrates 50 days after
Easter. It permits us time to deepen our appreciation of Jesus’ life,
suffering, death and resurrection. We also get a nice slice of history of
the early Church and today we hear how some of the early followers of
Jesus were a little skeptical about receiving Paul in their midst – after
all, he had a reputation of being their persecutor.
This made me reflect on a saying that I read the other day on a program I
use, entitled, Word for the Day. Margaret Fuller wrote there is
nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it’s going to be a butterfly.”
Appearances can deceive and we are called to see Jesus in all we meet. I
truly believe that the other day we saved the life of a young mother of
four. When I write these articles, which I have been doing for 10 plus
years, I want to help us all realize that the support we give each week to
the Church, helps us be “church” to so many. Your contributions
provide for the ministries that take place here in your name. When this
young woman came to the Outreach for help with a medical bill, it was
because of volunteers listening hard to her story, and putting her in
contact with all the right people, beginning with Laura at the Clinic, that
she is now in the process of getting proper treatment for a malignancy.
Vacation Bible School to be held
Monday, June 15 – Friday, June 19, from
9:00 a.m. – noon each morning. This
year’s program is “SonSpark Labs.”
SonSpark Labs creates a fun and engaging discovery lab where children will
have a great time singing fun songs,
watching skits, creating crafts and playing games. But most important,
they’ll discover that God’s plan for everyone is Jesus! We’re looking
forward to sharing this exciting event with the children and parents in
our parish. We hope they will all join us at SonSpark Labs. “SonSpark
Labs” can be an inspirational and educational experience for your
entire family.
How to register: Registration/Medical Release forms may be found at
the office of Faith Formation. If you are unable to come by the office
and pick up a registration form, I will be more than happy to e-mail a
copy to you. Space is very limited and we sell out quickly, so don’t
delay in signing up!
Yes, we are branches on the vine and we need to make sure we stay
connected to the Father who is the vine grower. Without Jesus, we can
do nothing, but we sure can accomplish much with Him, even seeing a
butterfly in a caterpillar!
RCIA
This year’s process will come to a close in two
weeks. But our journey in faith never ends, so the
celebration of Pentecost is a reminder that our
Baptism sends us out to share the Good News.

HELP US MEET OUR GOALS
2015 Annual Fund Campaign
The Annual Fund is the lifeblood of our school. All gifts to the fund are taxdeductible. The school can use these unrestricted funds immediately to satisfy the most urgent needs; generally student financial assistance, faculty support, new programs and the purchase of supplies and equipment.
WAYS TO GIVE
Cash Gifts—Gifts may be paid by cash or a check made payable to St. Mary
Catholic School and sent to: St. Mary School, Development Office, 217 S. 4th
Street, Wilmington, NC 28401
On-Line Giving—Contributing on-line is a convenient and safe option to
make your gift. www.thestmaryschool.org/annualfund
Pledges—Pledges are gift commitments paid over a period of time according
to a prearranged payment schedule.
Matching Gifts—Many employers sponsor matching gift programs that match
donations by current and retired employees.
Envelopes & brochures are available in the back of the church.
For additional information about SMS Annual Fund and other advancement
activities, please contact JoAnn Daley, Development Director

The present school year found us adding Lego Robotics in Grades 3-8 and
Chromebooks in Grade 5. The goal is to add Chromebooks in Grades 3 more
grades for the upcoming school year.
As the interest in Kindergarten has been so high for next year, we are opening a 2nd class for the next school year. We have very few openings in some
of our grade levels. I hope that you have registered for your child's space.
Thank you for choosing St. Mary Catholic School for your child's education.
Snow Day will be made up on June 5th with a noon dismissal.
June 4th will be a full day.
