About the university
USAO is one of the most unique and progressive
universities in the nation. It is Oklahoma’s only public
liberal arts college.
As a liberal arts institution, we believe it is important
that students always have before them the simultaneous
experience of specialized and general learning. We
believe it is important that they be challenged to relate
their academic concentration to the broader realm of
knowledge and that they continually be encouraged to
develop meaningful and useful associations between
diverse bodies of information.
This is the meaning of interdisciplinary education, and
it is what truly distinguishes the learning experience at
USAO. Many of the classes are taught by faculty teams,
where two, three and sometimes four instructors plan the
course and teach it together.
For example, American Civilization may be taught by
a historian, philosopher and artist. World Thought and
Culture could include a philosopher, sociologist and a
literature professor. Math in the Modern World might
involve a mathematician, computer scientist and musician.
Instructors interact in dealing with complex topics, all
bringing his or her particular academic concentration
into a conversation of perspectives.
This form of education is not easy. We intend that the
rigors students face in interdisciplinary learning will result
in significant personal growth and development. Difficulty
is a necessary prerequisite of growth and development.
Challenge is what interdisciplinary education is all about.
It is what USAO is all about.
USAO has one of the best-prepared faculties in the
state to offer and help conquer this challenge. Now,
almost 90 percent of professors have earned the highest
degree available in their field.
In 2011, USAO joined the prestigious list of “National
Liberal Arts Colleges” in the U.S. News and World Report’s
annual ranking — the only institution in Oklahoma, public
or private, to be included on this select, national list. The
same list includes Trinity, Amherst, Swarthmore and
hundreds of other respected, private liberal arts colleges.
USAO also received an ‘A’ grade from the American
Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) for the strength
of its IDS curriculum, making it one of only 22 universities
nationwide to earn this near perfect score.
No institution in Oklahoma has higher admission
standards. This is only one of the ways this institution is
being transformed by its 10-year Mission Enhancement
Plan.
In addition to the unique curriculum, USAO is a National
Historic District and is the only college or university in
Oklahoma to be on the National Register of Historic
Places. It was given this status because of its history
and the preservation of numerous original buildings on
campus.
Originally founded as Oklahoma College for Women
in 1908, the school was the first college created by
Oklahoma’s first Legislature. Additionally, it was one
of only seven colleges nationwide developed with the
mission of catering to women.
Along with a rich history, USAO has the oldest original
mission of any state college of university. Its original motto
states:
Not for livelihood but for life.

USAO Drovers
men’s
history
John, Marilyn and Katy Feaver
We take great pride in the accomplishments of our
students outside the classroom. And athletics is a prime
example.
In 2012, three Drover teams made appearances in NAIA
National Championship tournaments as men’s soccer,
men’s basketball and baseball all represented our fine
institution on a national stage. These are just three recent
examples of the school’s achievements.
Throughout its rich 40 years of Drover athletics, the
university boasts 45 All-Americans, 63 national scholarathletes and 228 All-Conference athletes and coaches.
I know you take pride in the accomplishments of your
Drover teams – setting records, graduating excellent
student athletes and helping create a vibrant campus
culture.
USAO, though, competes aggressively on a national
level with the finest schools, public and private, and we’ve
racked up several other “titles” that should add to your
pride as a Drover:
• USAO ranks No. 4 in America among peer colleges
for “promoting upward social mobility,” according
to Washington Monthly. Its “upward social mobility”
measure is based upon USAO’s ratio of graduation rate of
Pell Grant recipients to net price.

Drover History
The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma was well
into its history before introducing its first sports teams in
1973 — teams that became known as the Drovers and the
Droverettes, named after the rich heritage of cattle driving
in the Chickasha area. Today, both teams are referred to as
the Drovers.
The athletic programs began when the school was still
named Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts. It started with
baseball games, golf and tennis matches scheduled in the
spring of 1973. The Drovers’ most prominent sport — basketball — began in the fall of 1973.
During that first year of basketball, the Drovers borrowed
uniforms from Oral Roberts University in blue, gold and
white. In the school’s second season, the OCLA Drovers became the USAO Drovers, and new uniforms in our
trademark green and gold colors were acquired.
The first Drover basketball games were set against Bethany Nazarene College on Nov. 17, 1973. Two days later, on
Nov. 19, then-Chickasha Mayor Samuel E. Evans declared
“Drovers Day” as the university celebrated its first home
game in Myers Fieldhouse, which is owned by Chickasha
Public Schools. In 1981, the Drovers broke ground on the
USAO Fieldhouse, which gave the teams a place to practice and play in their own backyard. Phase I of the building
was completed during the 1981-82 season. Three more
phases added dressing rooms, training areas and a swimming pool.
Long-time head basketball coach and now athletic director Brisco McPherson played for the first Drover basketball team and has been connected with the school ever
since.
In 1984, basketball star Gordon Musgrove earned the
university’s first All-American honor. A few seasons later,
in 1988, Herb Blunt became USAO’s first All-America First
Team recipient and earned Player of the Year honors in the
Sooner Athletic Conference and NAIA’s District 9.
In 2002, the men’s basketball team went on to claim the
Drovers first NAIA National Championship, beating out
conference-rival Oklahoma Baptist 9679.
After a 17-year hiatus, baseball was
reborn in 1994, when the USAO Board
of Regents voted to expand USAO’s athletics programs to include baseball, softball and cross country. Long-time Drover
supporter and USAO administrator Bill
Smith donated his personal baseball
memorabilia to auction off for funds to
help re-establish the Drover baseball and
softball programs. In 1995, he became
the namesake of the Drovers’ ballpark.
Both baseball and softball programs
have served the university well, with
baseball earning the Red River Conference North Division Championship in
1999 and softball claiming the Sooner
6
#GoDrovers
Athletic Conference Championship in 2004. The softball
program earned three straight NAIA National Tournament
appearances in the mid-2000s while the baseball program
represented the university at the NAIA National Tournament in 2013.
USAO proudly supported a tennis teams for years. In
1999, the women’s tennis team became the first in school
history to win a regional championship. That year, both the
men’s and women’s team’s qualified for the NAIA National
Tournament.
While the golf team served the college sporadically for
many seasons, it along with tennis, was discontinued in
lean years.
In 1998, the Drovers began the men’s and women’s soccer programs under Coach Jimmy Hampton. The Drover
men have claimed numerous Sooner Athletic Conference
championships and have been to the NAIA National Tournament five times. In 2010 and 2011, the Drover men made
it all the way to the quarterfinals of the tournament, making
history for the young program.
In 2011, the Drover women’s soccer team competed in
their first NAIA National Tournament and won the Sooner
Athletic Conference Tournament title for the first time in the
program’s history.
Beginning in fall of 2012, the Drovers brought back cross
country, which served the university a few seasons in the
mid-1990s.
USAO began play as part of a five-school group that
started the Sooner Athletic Conference. USAO dropped
out of the SAC in 1994 for brief stints in the Oklahoma Intercollegiate and Red River Athletic conferences, but was
granted re-admission in the SAC for the 2000-01 season.
It is one of only two original members currently in the conference.
The Drovers have a rich history of winning and producing quality student-athletes. The university boasts 45
All-Americans, 63 NAIA Scholar-Athletes and 228 All-Conference coaches and athletes throughout its history.

Jimmy Hampton
Head Coach
In his decade and a half as the head coach of USAO men’s and women’s
soccer teams, Jimmy Hampton has built the programs from the ground up
and quickly turned them into powerful, nationally-competitive teams. He
has led both teams to a combined 367-208-32 record.
Four of the last five years, Hampton was named Coach of the Year by the
Sooner Athletic Conference and/or the National Soccer Coaches Association
of America Southwest Region.
On the men’s soccer side, Hampton is the 18th winningest active coach
in the NAIA with 210 wins to his credit going into the 2014 season.
In 2013, for the fifth year in a row, the Drover men received a bid to the
coveted NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship tournament. They found
their way to the NAIA Quarterfinals two of those years and in 2012, the men
even hosted the tournament’s opening round.
Making history for the women’s soccer
program, USAO won the Sooner Athletic
ampton s
Conference Tournament and played in
the opening round of the NAIA National
ecord
Tournament in 2011.

Before becoming USAO’s coach, Hampton spent eight seasons building
championship-caliber teams at Chickasha High School. In that time, the
Fightin’ Chicks collected five state championships, and Hampton won nearly
90 percent of his games in his years at CHS. He ranks as one of the all-time
winningest soccer coaches in Oklahoma prep history.
He is one of the few soccer coaches in the Southwest to obtain a national
“A” coaching license from the United States Soccer Federation.
As a player, Hampton was successful at nearly every level. As an all-state
selection at Tulsa Union High School, Hampton played two seasons at the
NCAA Division I Western Illinois University and two at Northeastern State
University, where he was named team captain and earned all-conference
honors as a senior. Hampton also played professionally for the Tulsa
Roughnecks and the Oklahoma City Warriors.

Alexis Vizarelis has been with the Drovers
program since it began in 1998, first as one
of the school’s best goalkeepers and then as
an assistant under Hampton.
While coaching at USAO, Vizarelis has
helped develop players to become NAIA
All-Americans and serves as recruiting
coordinator and goalkeeper coach.
His goalkeeping ability and defensive
philosophy are almost unprecedented.
Hampton has said Vizarelis is one of the best
goalkeepers he’s seen and someone who has
made a difference coaching USAO goalies.
In 2013, Vizarelis joined an exclusive list
of coaches to obtain a national “A” coaching
license from the United States Soccer

As a player, Vizarelis is one of the most
decorated goalkeepers in USAO’s history.
At one time, he has held every school
goalkeeping record. For his career (1998-01),
Vizarelis notched 21 shutouts.

which he described as one of the best in the program’s
history.
Three freshmen newcomers in particular that he pointed out as expected to start immediately are forward Jordan Cleveland, midfielder Lauren Parker and defender
Kate Williams. All three are Oklahoma athletes who were
named All-District in high school.
Hampton brought in nine freshmen and one junior. Additionally, junior Shay Nash, from Northern Oklahoma College, is expected on the field this year after a preseason
injury in 2013.
“The women have done well, to be fair. They have
bought into it,” Hampton said. “A lot of players have
changed even from last year in their workout mentality.”
In 16 years coaching USAO, Hampton has led the women’s team to an overall record of 157-125-18. The program’s highlight was a 2011 SAC Championship and first
national tournament appearance that same year.
Fans who can’t make it out to the Drovers home games
this year can watch them live for free online on USAO’s

Strong upperclassmen and talented newcomers could
lead to a record-breaking year out of the Drover women’s
soccer team as the 2014 campaign unfolds.
“This is the best talent we’ve had in the 16 years of the
program,” Hampton said. “I want us to win a Sooner Athletic Conference title and to go to the national tournament
to compete for a national championship.”
The 2014 team has nine upperclassmen and 14 returners who provide a backbone and leadership for the nine
freshmen, many of whom are expected to start immediately.
The Drovers were picked to finish fifth out of 10 teams in
the Sooner Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.
Hampton said he thought fifth was a fair position based on
last year’s performance.
In 2013, the Drovers won five of their last eight games
and found their way into the postseason after struggling
to get a rhythm early in the season. USAO finished the
year with a 6-11 (5-5) record.
From the 2013 squad, USAO lost two players who saw
significant time on the field and the team’s back up goalkeeper, but the Drovers’ big
scorers — Jade Ovendale and
Linda Addo — are back for
their senior season.
Together Ovendale and
Addo scored 29 of the team’s
38 goals for the season and
were also the team’s biggest
assisters on the year.
On the defensive end, USAO
returns its starting goalkeeper,
Addie Lee. After three years,
Lee is second in school history in career shutouts with
13. Also, she is third in career
goals against average (1.50)
and wins (21).
Anchoring the back line for
another year are juniors Ryah
Vyse and Jentry Yates.
“Our returners are going to
be huge for us,” Hampton said.
“And they look good in preseason.”
Despite how good returners
are, Hampton says no returner
is safe in her starting position.
“I tell them to compete, compete to get the starting 11 kit,”
Hampton said. “If you want to
get a kit, you better be better
than the new kids coming in.”
And the talent coming in is
strong. Hampton said he is excited for the recruiting class,

five shots on the year, two of which were on
goal.

starting all but one. While she didn’t score

First Team as both a sophomore and a senior
while playing for Midlothian High School.

in every game of the season and started
in all except for one. She had assists in
conference games against Oklahoma
Baptist and Northwood.

Oklahoma Baptist. In that same game, she

Senior Girls Soccer Team. In 2010, she

17 spot, which is where they finished the 2013 campaign.
It is the fifth year in a row USAO has appeared on the preseason Top 25 list.
Additionally, the Drovers were picked to take the Sooner Athletic Conference for the fifth year in a row.
“It creates a tradition of success and a highly competitive environment when you step onto the field as a USAO
men’s soccer player,” Head Soccer Coach Jimmy Hampton said.
In 2013, the Drovers won 11 of their last 12 games,
stomping through the SAC regular season and tournament with just one conference loss. The Drovers finished
the 2013 campaign with a 15-5 (9-1) record.
In 16 years coaching at USAO, Hampton has led the
men’s team to an overall record of 210-83-14. The Drovers have been to the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship tournament each of the last five years, and this
year’s goal, Hampton said, is to return and make a run for
the title.
“We want to continue the route to the national championship; it is an expectation,” he said. “There’s probably a
bit more pressure on the new kids coming in to live up to
the previous successes.”
The 2014 team is composed of roughly half newcomers and half returning players. Key returners include NAIA
All-American and SAC Player of the Year Liam Madden
and the Drovers’ record-holding goalkeeper Bryan Byars.

#GoDrovers
Madden, a junior from Scotland, was tied for first on
last year’s team for total goals with 10 and led the squad
in assists with nine. Byars holds nearly every goalkeeping
record in school history and is already tearing into national
records entering his senior year.
Also, three other Drovers who earned All-Conference
honors last year will once again take the field for USAO —
midfielders Kalokwera Okot and Niall Burley and forward
Stephen Owusu.
Together, the three players were responsible for 12
goals and 10 assists in 2013.
Hampton said it is hard to tell so early on which newcomers could prove to be big contributors this year, although many are expected to see significant playing time
early in the season.
The athletes began practice on Aug. 12, and Hampton said the Drovers focused on fitness and endurance
to best prepare the team to turn around and play almost
immediately.
Additional focus has been on tactical work and team
building to help the players learn to work as a unit and to
play for one another.
In their first preseason exhibition less than a week after
the players checked in for the year, the Drovers topped
Oklahoma Wesleyan, a team ranked fifth in the NAIA preseason poll, with a 3-1 final, and tied NCAA Division I Oral
Roberts a few days later.
Fans who can’t make it out to the Drovers home games
this year can watch them live for free online on USAO’s
sports website, usao.edu/sports.
