About the university
USAO is one of the most unique and progressive
universities in the nation. It is Oklahoma’s only public
liberal arts college.
As a liberal arts institution, we believe it is important
that students always have before them the simultaneous
experience of specialized and general learning. We
believe it is important that they be challenged to relate
their academic concentration to the broader realm of
knowledge and that they continually be encouraged to
develop meaningful and useful associations between
diverse bodies of information.
This is the meaning of interdisciplinary education, and
it is what truly distinguishes the learning experience at
USAO. Many of the classes are taught by faculty teams,
where two, three and sometimes four instructors plan the
course and teach it together.
For example, “American Civilization” may be taught
by a historian, philosopher and artist. “World Thought
and Culture” could include a philosopher, sociologist
and a literature professor. “Math in the Modern World”
might involve a mathematician, computer scientist and
musician.
Instructors interact in dealing with complex topics, all
bringing his or her particular academic concentration
into a conversation of perspectives.
This form of education is not easy. We intend that the
rigors students face in interdisciplinary learning will result
in significant personal growth and development. Difficulty
is a necessary prerequisite of growth and development.
Challenge is what interdisciplinary education is all about.
It is what USAO is all about.
USAO has one of the best-prepared faculties in the
state to offer and help conquer this challenge. Now,
4
almost 90 percent of professors have earned the highest
degree available in their field.
USAO belongs to the prestigious list of “National Liberal
Arts Colleges” in the U.S. News and World Report’s
annual ranking — the only institution in Oklahoma, public
or private, to be included on this select, national list. The
same list includes Trinity, Amherst, Swarthmore and
hundreds of other respected, private liberal arts colleges.
USAO also received an ‘A’ grade from the American
Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) for the strength
of its IDS curriculum, making it one of only 22 universities
nationwide to score this near perfect score.
As of fall 2011, no institution in Oklahoma has higher
admission standards. This is only one of the ways this
institution is being transformed by its 10-year Mission
Enhancement Plan.
In addition to the unique curriculum, USAO is a National
Historic District and is the only college or university in
Oklahoma to be on the National Register of Historic
Places. It was given this status because of its history
and the preservation of numerous original buildings on
campus.
Originally founded as Oklahoma College for Women
in 1908, the school was the first college created by
Oklahoma’s first Legislature. Additionally, it was one of
only seven colleges nationwide created with the mission
of catering to women.
Along with a rich history, USAO has the oldest original
mission of any state college of university. Its original motto
states:
Not for livelihood
but for life.

John, Marilyn and Katy Feaver
We take great pride in the accomplishments of our
students outside the classroom. And athletics is a prime
example.
Last year, three Drover teams made appearances in
NAIA National Championship tournaments as men’s
soccer, men’s basketball and baseball all represented our
fine institution on a national stage. These are just three
recent examples of the school’s achievements.
Throughout its rich 40 years of Drover athletics, the
university boasts 39 All-Americans, 62 national scholarathletes and 210 All-Conference athletes and coaches.
I know you take pride in the accomplishments of your
Drover teams — setting records, graduating excellent
student athletes and helping create a vibrant campus
culture.
USAO, though, competes aggressively on a national
level with the finest schools, public and private, and we’ve
racked up several other “titles” that should add to your
pride as a Drover:
• USAO ranks No. 4 in America among peer colleges
for “promoting upward social mobility,” according to
the latest report from Washington Monthly. Its “upward
social mobility” measure is based upon USAO’s ratio of
graduation rate of Pell Grant recipients to net price.
• For the third year in a row, USAO is the only institution

Drover History
The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma was well
into its history before introducing its first sports teams in
1973 — teams that became known as the Drovers and the
Droverettes, named after the rich heritage of cattle driving
in the Chickasha area. Today, both teams are referred to as
the Drovers.
The athletic programs began when the school was still
named Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts. It started with
baseball games and golf and tennis matches scheduled in
the spring of 1973. The Drovers’ most prominent sport —
basketball — began in the fall of 1973.
During that first year of basketball, the Drovers borrowed
uniforms from Oral Roberts University in blue, gold and
white. In the school’s second season, the OCLA Drovers became the USAO Drovers, and new uniforms in our
trademark green and gold colors were acquired.
The first Drover basketball games were set against Bethany Nazarene College on Nov. 17, 1973. Two days later, on
Nov. 19, then-Chickasha Mayor Samuel E. Evans declared
“Drovers Day” as the university celebrated its first home
game in Myers Fieldhouse, which is owned by Chickasha
Public Schools. In 1981, the Drovers broke ground on the
USAO Fieldhouse, which gave the teams a place to practice and play in their own backyard. Phase I of the building
was completed during the 1981-82 season. Three more
phases added dressing rooms, training areas and a swimming pool.
Long-time head basketball coach and now athletic director Brisco McPherson played for the first Drover basketball team and has been connected with the school ever
since.
In 1984, basketball star Gordon Musgrove earned the
university’s first All-American honor. A few seasons later,
in 1988, Herb Blunt became USAO’s first All-America First
Team recipient and earned Player of the Year honors in the
Sooner Athletic Conference and NAIA’s District 9.
In 2002, the men’s basketball team went on to claim the
Drovers first NAIA National Championship, beating out
conference-rival Oklahoma Baptist 96-79.
After a 17-year hiatus, baseball was reborn in 1994,
when the USAO Board of Regents voted to expand USAO’s athletics programs to include baseball, softball and
cross country. Long-time Drover supporter and USAO
administrator Bill Smith donated his personal baseball
memorabilia to auction off for funds to help re-establish
the Drover baseball and softball programs. In 1995, he became the namesake of the Drovers’ ballpark.
Both baseball and softball programs have served the
university well, with baseball earning the Red River Conference North Division Championship in 1999 and softball
claiming the Sooner Athletic Conference Championship
in 2004. The softball program earned three straight NAIA
National Championship tournament appearances in the
mid-2000s while the baseball program represented the
university at the NAIA National Championship tournament
in 2013.
8
USAO proudly supported a tennis teams for years. In
1999, the women’s tennis team became the first in school
history to win a regional championship. That year, both the
men’s and women’s team’s qualified for the NAIA National
Tournament.
While the golf team served the college sporadically with
pride for many seasons, it along with tennis, was discontinued in lean years.
In 1998, the Drovers began the men’s and women’s soccer programs under Coach Jimmy Hampton. The Drover
men have claimed numerous Sooner Athletic Conference championships and have been to the NAIA National
Championship tournament five times. In 2010 and 2011,
the Drover men made it all the way to the quarterfinals of
the tournament, making history for the young program.
In 2011, the Drover women’s soccer team competed in
their first NAIA National Championship tournament and
won the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament title for
the first time in the program’s history.
Beginning in fall of 2012, the Drovers brought back cross
country, which served the university a few seasons in the
mid-1990s.
USAO began play as part of a five-school group that
started the Sooner Athletic Conference. USAO dropped
out of the SAC in 1994 to join the Oklahoma Intercollegiate
Conference. The Drovers played in the OIC for just four
seasons before moving on to the Red River Athletic Conference. After only two seasons with the RRAC, USAO applied for and was granted membership back into the SAC
for the 2000-01 season.
The Drovers have a rich history of winning and producing quality student-athletes. The university boasts 39
All-Americans, 62 NAIA Scholar-Athletes and 210 All-Conference coaches and athletes throughout its history.

Jadyn Wallis
Head Coach
Now enjoying her second season heading up the Drover softball program, Jadyn Wallis is past the new coach jitters and ready for another
round in the tough Sooner Athletic Conference.
In her first season at USAO, which was riddled with team injuries, she
led the Drovers to a 26-26 record and a SAC Tournament trip.
Perhaps one of the highlights of the season for the young coach was a
5-2 road win against Oklahoma City, a team that was ranked No. 4 in the
country at the time.
In 2013, five Drovers were named All-Conference, including one Gold
Glove performer.
Wallis, an Oklahoma native and former NCAA Division I athlete, took
over at the helm of the Drover softball team in August 2012.
After playing four years for Patty Gasso at the University of Oklahoma, Wallis went back to her high school alma mater, Newcastle, where
she served as an assistant for two years. She joined USAO directly from
Sooner Athletic Conference rival Oklahoma Baptist, where she served as
pitching coach.
Wallis said her goal is to help transform student-athletes from teenagers
to women, “like Coach (Patty) Gasso did for me.”
In addition to her assistant coaching duties at OBU and previously at
Newcastle, Wallis has had a pitching and skills clinic for 40 athletes a week
for four years.
She also has helped with the Josh Heupel ‘Day of Champions,’ where
she has taught leadership skills and establishing trusting relationships
since 2007.
Wallis earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology from OU in 2008. She
lives in Blanchard with her husband, Greg Wallis, and their daughter, Conner.

Murray State transfers Sevie Carel and Courtney
Capps are two other players Wallis pointed out as
ones who will power the lineup and help out defensively.
“Also, we’ve got an array of outfields. Speed,
speed, speed. That is one thing you will see out of the
Drovers this year — speed — on the base path and in
the outfield,” Wallis said. “Dani Warren will be at third
base. She’s going to be one of our key players. She’s
aggressive.”
The always-tough SAC has undergone some
changes in the last few years. Starting this season,
four teams — Northwood, Southwestern Assemblies
of God, Southwestern Christian and Texas Wesleyan
— have joined the conference.
“Honestly, it hasn’t changed the makeup much because it’s still going to be tough. We are still in the
Sooner Athletic Conference, and we’re still going to
be tough,” Wallis said. “Do I think we are going to
compete better this year? Absolutely. But as far as
changing the strength, I don’t think it’s changed it at
all.”
USAO starts the season tied for fourth with Northwood in the SAC Preseason Coaches Poll, a position
she is pleased with to start the season.
“Actually, I feel really good about it because it’s
going to challenge us,” she said. “There’s no doubt
in my mind that we can work our way up to the front
of that, but that gives us a good starting off point …
then we can come in and just show with our talent.”
In addition to playing teams less familiar, three of
USAO’s regular conference foes are ranked in the
NAIA Top 25 Preseason Coaches Poll. Oklahoma
City, a team expected to finish first in the SAC, is third
in the NAIA, while (T15) Oklahoma Baptist and (19)
Saint Gregory’s add to the conference’s strength.
USAO will be offering free live stream broadcasts
of the majority of the home games this year. Games
will stream in real time along with live stats, a convenience USAO added in 2010.
“It’s going to help a lot because we play at 1 p.m.
and 3 p.m. early in the season and a lot of parents are
still at work. That’s going to allow them to be able to
watch their kid play, so that’s going to be nice,” Wallis
said. “And it’s going to help me also learn what I need
to work on defensively and offensively.”

overview
Head Coach Jadyn Wallis, who says this year’s
Drovers are a perfect combination of young talent
and returning veterans, is hopeful for the 2014 softball season’s potential at the University of Science
and Arts of Oklahoma.
“Overall, we’re going to be solid. I’m excited
about this year; I really am,” she said. “We are going
to have youth so we will have a lot of those youthful
mistakes, but those are the ones you learn from.”
Finishing the 2013 season with an even 26-26 record, Wallis said one of her goals for the season is
to have her team build on previous years and continue to improve the program.
Wallis has six returners, some of whom have
played together at USAO for four years. To round
out her team, she and Assistant Coach Ken Richardson found seven freshmen and three junior college transfers.
“It looks good,” she said. “My goals for the season are for them to really mold together … just competing every single game and just getting better every game.”
Returning for their senior seasons are four-year
starters Brooke McLeod, Sara Reeves and Skyler
Nichols as well as shortstop Taylor Smith, who is in
her third year as a Drover. Additionally, catcher Kayla Adams and outfielder Hannah Neill, both juniors,
are back for another season at USAO.
McLeod was one of the team’s two pitchers last
season and is a solid hitter who has scored 37 runs
and batted in an additional 31 in her career. She’s
a utility player, and Wallis said she expects McLeod
to see some time at second and third as well as in
the circle.
“My first baseman, Sara Reeves, is returning. She
is huge at first base. She’s solid,” Wallis said. “(Second baseman) Skyler Nichols is coming back from
an ACL tear. She’ll be a huge asset this year also.”
Adams, who missed just one game in 2013,
spends the majority of her time either on or behind
the plate. Adams led the team in RBIs with 40 and
home runs with seven in her sophomore year.
“She was a big stick for us last year, too,” Wallis
said of Adams.
One of USAO’s struggles last season was that
the Drovers only had two pitchers — both of whom
specialized in relief.
Wallis brought in freshmen Tate Landmark and
Jaci Booker to add to the battery. Both pitchers
were named All-State in high school.

every game. One of her best games was a
late conference game against Mid-America
Christian, where she recorded two home runs
and six RBIs.
2012: In her freshman season with the
Drovers, Adams saw 35 starts behind the
plate. She had 27 hits off of 94 at bats for the
season. Her lone home run was in an early
game against LSU-Alexandria. In that game,
she matched her season-high of three RBIs.
In a February game against Sterling College,
Adams went 2-for-3 with a double and a
triple, one run and an RBI.
High School: Adams joined the Drovers
directly from Mustang High School, where
she was named All-Conference four years,
All-District and All-City. She helped her team
become Regional Champions two years and
State Runners Up once.
2013: McLeod spent her junior season as
one of two pitchers, recording an ERA of
3.34, and also led the team in batting average
(.339). She was named an All-Conference
Second Team Pitcher.
2012: As a sophomore in the circle, McLeod
threw 26 strikeouts in 52.1 innings. At the
plate, she scored eight runs and had seven
RBIs off 11 hits.
2011: McLeod came in her freshman year
as one of the starting pitchers and threw
111 innings and 35 strikeouts. At the plate,
McLeod scored 12 runs and had seven RBIs.
High School: McLeod earned All-State, AllConference and Conference All-Star honors.
2013: Neill made 32 appearances for the
Drovers, including 22 starts, her sophomore
season. She scored a total of nine runs and
batted in another five runners. Her best
offensive series was an early doubleheader
against Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College. In
those two games, she scored a total of five
runs, hit three doubles and a triple and batted
four runners in.
2012: As a true freshman, Neill saw
appearances in six games and scored three
runs for the Drovers, mostly as a courtesy
runner. Her runs came in wins against
Benedictine College, Northwestern OSU and
Mid-America Christian.
High School: Neill was named AllConference and All-District while playing for
Harrah High School. She helped her team to
the state tournament her sophomore season
and to become District Champions all four
years she was in high school. Harrah High
School also was Regional Champions two of
her years there.
