A Legacy of Faith
Catholics have lived in what was to become the Diocese of
Sioux Falls dating back to the early French explorers. Next,
missionaries, including eventual bishop, Martin Marty, came to
serve the Native American and early settler population.
The formal Diocese of Sioux Falls was established on
November 12, 1889 by Pope Leo XIII. At that time it included all
of South Dakota. The current territory of the diocese, which
includes all of South Dakota east of the Missouri River, was
established when the Diocese of Lead (now Rapid City) was
created in 1904.
Through spiritual and sacramental outreach in parishes and
schools across eastern South Dakota, and a commitment to
service, the Diocese of Sioux Falls has brought the Gospel to all.
Grateful for the past, celebrating today and sharing our faith
into the future, we celebrate a Legacy of Faith – 125 years.

Philadelphia. Fr. Ron will be going (if anyone wishes to join him
in a 12 day road trip, call soon). We will take a space in the
bulletins these weeks, to celebrate God's gift of life, and to
dedicate ourselves to being a light for the world.
Prayer of Blessing for College Students
Lord God, your Spirit of wisdom fills the earth and teaches us
your ways. Look upon these students. Bless them with your
abundant grace and lead them to your truth and love.
Help them to enjoy their learning and take delight in new
discoveries. Help them to persevere in their studies and give
them the desire to learn all things well. Grant that they may
follow Jesus Christ, the way, the truth, and the life, forever and
ever. Amen.
Terra Sancta Guild Annual meeting
In Retreat Center, NW Rapid City
Saturday, September 19th, 2015
5pm Mass-6pm Social-7pm Dinner
With the gift of the old St. Martin’s Monastery in NW Rapid
City, we “Walked by Faith,” restoring the school, establishing
the Terra Sancta Retreat Center, and relocating some Chancery
Offices. The Financial Campaign begun in 2007 is ongoing. Now
we look to the future. The Terra Sancta Guild is an annual giving
society of generous donors in the Diocese of Rapid City. The
mission – to support the Terra Sancta Campus and special
projects of the diocese as designated by our Bishop. We are
asking current Guild members to continue to support the vision
through an annual gift. We also hope to bring new members
into this giving society by sharing the good news about Terra
Sancta, and inviting them to be a part of the vision of forming
faithful Catholic disciples. Generosity leaves legacies! Contact

Diocesan Stewardship Prayer: Most generous and loving Father,
you offer us the grace to live life more abundantly through your son,
Jesus, our Lord and Master. You invite us into a deep and loving
relationship – one built on faith and trust in your divine plan for our
lives. We pray for the grace of surrender. Lord God, you call us to
participate fully in building your Kingdom here and now by being
faithful stewards through a life of generous hospitality, a lively faith,
and dedicated discipleship. Modelling our Blessed Mother, it is only
in seeking and responding to the Holy Spirit that we can fully answer this call. We pray for the grace of faith. We thank you for the
many gifts you have given us. All that is good in our lives comes
from you. Give us eyes to see, ears to hear, and a heart to respond
so that we might generously share your gifts to build up the Body of
Christ, Your Church. We pray for the grace of generosity. It is in
sharing that we can fully experience this life in abundance in Christ
Jesus our Lord.

Pope Francis speaks to families in Wednesday general audience: “Today we begin a short course of reflection on three
dimensions that beat the time, so to speak, of the rhythm of family life: celebration, work and prayer. We begin with celebration. Today we will speak of celebration. And we say immediately that a celebration is an invention of God. We recall
the conclusion of the account of Creation in the Book of Genesis, which we heard: “And on the seventh day God finished
his work which he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done. So God blessed the
seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all his work which he had done in creation” (2:2-3). God himself teaches us the importance of dedicating a time to contemplate and enjoy what was well done in work. I speak of
work, of course, not only in the sense of a job or profession, but in the wider sense: every action with which we men
and women can collaborate in the creative work of God. Therefore, a celebration is not the laziness of being in an armchair, or the elation of a foolish evasion, no. A celebration is first of all a loving and thankful look on work well done; we
celebrate a work. Also you, newlyweds, are celebrating the work of a good time of engagement: and this is beautiful! It is
the time to look at children or grandchildren who are growing and to think: how lovely! It is the time to look at our home,
the guests we entertain, the community that surrounds us, and to think: what a good thing! God did this when he created
the world, and he does so continually because God always creates, also at this moment!”
Pope Francis has instituted a World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, which will be celebrated each year on
September 1st. In the letter, the Pope reaffirmed how part of our responsibility as Christians involves resolving
the ecological crisis which humanity is presently experiencing. In doing so, he stressed, we must first rediscover
in our own "rich spiritual patrimony" the deepest motivations for our concern for the care of creation and how
Jesus lived in the world.
All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of your creatures.
You embrace with your tenderness all that exists. Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty.
Fill us with peace, that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one.
O God of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth, so precious in your eyes.
Bring healing to our lives, that we may protect the world and not prey on it, that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction.
Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain at the expense of the poor and the earth.
Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contemplation, to recognize that we are profoundly united with
every creature as we journey towards your infinite light. We thank you for being with us each day. Encourage us, we pray, in our
struggle for justice, love and peace.
Father, we praise you with all your creatures. They came forth from your all-powerful hand; they are yours, filled with your presence
and your tender love. Praise be to you!
Son of God, Jesus, through you all things were made. You were formed in the womb of Mary our Mother, you became part of this
earth, and you gazed upon this world with human eyes. Today you are alive in every creature in your risen glory. Praise be to you!
Holy Spirit, by your light you guide this world towards the Father’s love and accompany creation as it groans in travail.
You also dwell in our hearts and you inspire us to do what is good. Praise be to you!
Triune Lord, wondrous community of infinite love, teach us to contemplate you in the beauty of the universe, for all things speak of you.
Awaken our praise and thankfulness for every being that you have made. Give us the grace to feel profoundly joined to everything that
is. God of love, show us our place in this world as channels of your love for all the creatures of this earth, for not one of them is forgotten in your sight. Enlighten those who possess power and money that they may avoid the sin of indifference, that they may love the
common good, advance the weak, and care for this world in which we live. The poor and the earth are crying out.
O Lord, seize us with your power and light, help us to protect all life, to prepare for a better future, for the coming of your Kingdom
of justice, peace, love and beauty. Praise be to You! Amen.
