“ From the shining cloud the Father’s voice is heard: This is my beloved Son, hear him.”
Matthew 17:5
Dear Parishioners and Visitors of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Shrine,
This weekend, I am sharing with you Bishop Dennis J. Sullivan’s letter of gratitude to our
parish and the entire diocese, for generously donating to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the
Philippines. In this season of almsgiving, this only reflects our answer to Christ’s call to care
for the most vulnerable. Let us continue to pray and reflect on today’s gospel of Matthew,
“This is my beloved Son, hear him,” and allow God to be with you in your journey this Lent.
Thank you for being with us this weekend and always. God bless you, Fr. Joe
The Chairman of the Catholic Relief Services Board, Archbishop Paul S. Coakley of Oklahoma City,
recently returned from the Philippines. He sent me a letter thanking the people of our diocese for
supporting our brothers and sisters who were impacted by Typhoon Haiyan. Archbishop Coakley asked me
to share the link to a 2-minute thank you video from CRS:
http://emergencies.crs.org/Philippines-typhoon-recovery-thank-you/
His letter also states, “ I saw the widespread damage wrought in the central part of the country, but I also saw
the wonderful results of the prayers and financial support that came from the Diocese of Camden. As
chairman of the board of Catholic Relief Services, I want to thank you, and all of your parishioners,
for your generosity.
In his apostolic exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis reminds us that Jesus invites us to “touch the
suffering flesh of others” and to “enter into the reality of other solidarity with the Filipino people.” I told the
Filipino people on our last day that it is our pledge not to forget. You have shown with your prayers and
support that you will not forget—and for that you have my heartfelt thanks.
I thank you for your loving and caring hearts. Through your incredible generosity our diocese collected
$259,799.33 which assists the work of Catholic Relief Services (CRS) in the areas of the Philippines
devastated by Typhoon Haiyan. Your generous response to this Special Collection is a witness to your lively
faith which reaches out in concern for those who have suffered the ravages of nature.
Thank you for responding with the charity of Christ. May God bless you.
+ Bishop Dennis J. Sullivan
