Dear Parishioners and Visitors of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Shrine,
Thanks so much for being with us this weekend or if you are one of our “long distance” friends whom we seem
to have via the internet, thanks for being with us via social media. This week’s letter is really simply to mention some
things that are happening in the parish as well as prepare us for the upcoming liturgical season of Lent. That’s right,
Lent is right around the pew beginning on Ash Wednesday, 5th of March, more on that in a minute.
I am always thrilled to share information about our young people with our parishioners and friends. When the
Catholic Christian faith is lived and taught within the domestic church that is the family, in a way that is consistent and
authentic, it is a joy to witness. At all of our Masses this week and next, a young college senior parishioner by the name
of Nicholas Frederick will be speaking with you and sharing some very exciting news. Nick is a graduate of our
elementary school, his family is and has been parishioners in our parish for a few generations. Currently, Nick studies at
Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades located in Media, Pa. He is studying to become a master mason (not to
be confused with the “Free Mason” movement.) Nick would like to become a tradesman. If you’ve never heard of this
school I invite you to check it out on the internet. It is very impressive, as is Nick.
Nick approached me after Mass at St. Luke’s, which he regularly attends, a couple of weekends ago and asked if
he could speak with me. He shared with me a program that his school is sponsoring that gives students the opportunity
to use what they are learning to help the homeless and poor. This particular experience will take place from 17th –24th
of May. Along with his teachers and fellow trade students, Nick will participate in Project FIAT sponsored by the
Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This is an order of Catholic religious sisters who work with the poor in
El Salvador. While there, the students will assist the good sisters in their ministry. Every student who participates,
however, is responsible to pay their way. Nick asked if he could ask for our parish support in anyway possible to help
defray his cost for this trip. I suggested that since he is one of “our own” (and by the way, a former very good altar
server at St. Luke’s) that he should speak directly to you seeking your spiritual and financial support. I ask you to help
him as best you can financially and if you are unable to do so financially, please keep him, his fellow students and the
good sisters in your prayers. He will be sure to report back to us when he returns from his mission trip. What a
wonderful and powerful way for our young people to live our faith. I thank you in advance for your assistance and who
knows, there’s always some brick and concrete work that needs to be done around the parish and I know where Nick
lives! Thanks so much.
Now for a blurb about Lent. We know that three main ways to acknowledge this penitential & renewal season is
through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Stay tuned for ways that you’ll be able to help your soul and your call to
sanctity through these three Lenten aspects right here at our parish. Hey, did I mention that Nick is going on a mission
trip and needs spiritual (prayer) and financial (almsgiving) help? Wow, how about that, here’s a great opportunity to start
at two of the three Lenten practices right off the bat.
As always, thanks for your presence, have a blessed week and never underestimate the grace and power
bestowed upon you at Baptism to help others come to Jesus. God bless!
Fr. Joe

During Bishop Sullivan’s visit to our school on January 30, he shared with 5th grade student,
Angwi Moutchia, how impressed he was with line she wrote in the class’s invite letter that read, “you may say no, you
may say yes, we just want to show you John Paul II is the best.”
We are very happy Bishop Sullivan said yes!
