Rebels suffer disappointing loss at home
BY SEAN BRAY

Maybe it was the Leafs jersey
Char-Lan’s general manager,
John Chafee, a die-hard
Montreal Canadiens fan, had
to wear as a result of a bet, but
his Rebels were not in sync on
home ice Saturday night as the
boys lost 7-4 to Athens.

Up 2-0 on goals from Travis
Locey and Grant MacDougall,
Coach Chris Eamon says his
boys appeared to call in the
rest of the game, “finding ways
to lose.”
The Rebs did lead later, 3-2,
following Joey MacDougall’s
second-period marker, but
Athens kept goaltender
Sheldon Primeau busy in the
net, eventually tying the match
again. G. MacDougall bulged
the twine in the third, restoring Char-Lan’s lead, only tem-
shots, but it was not enough.
And for Eamon, the experience was all too frustrating,
with his team “dominating”
early, only to see that energy
evaporate.

Thunder heard at broomball qualifying tourney
The Eastern Thunder
Juvenile Girls Broomball team
won the national qualifying
tournament held Nov. 27-28 in
Barrie, going undefeated
while allowing only two goals.
The girls topped a field of
nine teams from across the
province.
The Thunder met the
Twisted Sisters from Central
West in their first game.
Our local girls outscored
their opponents two to nothing. Goals were notched by
Justine Byers and Jodi
Pynenburg, with assists going
to Brittany Beckstead, Taryn
Hoogeveen, and Laura Hutt.
Game two was against the
Windsor Riot.
This one finished up as a 2-1
win for the eastern girls.
Justine Byers and Veronique
Cayer provided all of the
offence, each scoring a goal
and an assist.
Next up, the Thunder faced
their arch rivals, the Seaway
Valley Devils, another Eastern
Ontario squad. Though it was
a fiercely fought game, the
National Championships.
Many thanks to Terry
Barkley, Steve Norman, and
Clayton Ouderkirk, the team’s
coaching staff, who have spent
hours preparing the girls for
this tournament.
Thanks also go out to all of
the parents for their support.
Good luck in Regina to the
Eastern Ontario Thunder!

ON TO NATIONALS: The Eastern Thunder rolled over opponents at a recent qualifying
broomball tournament to earn a berth at the national competition. Back row from left:

Jackson, and Lily Moran. In front: Jessica Norman.
Thunder prevailed when
Pynenburg scored in double
overtime.
Assisting on the play were
Janessa Byers and Cayer.
With the double knockout
format of the tournament, a
team would have to twice beat
the Thunder.
The Devils gave it another go
in what turned out once again
to be a match that would need
double overtime to decide it.
The Thunder’s Beckstead
found the net in regulation to
tie the score at 1-1, sending the
contest into the extra session.
Assists on the equalizer went
20015D Hwy. 43, West of Alexandria (613) 525-0609
to Justine Byers and Jackson.
In the second OT period,
Justine Byers finally put the
win away, banging home an
unassisted tally to secure a
berth at nationals.

McLeod was assessed a game
misconduct and tossed from
proceedings, but Moore had to
fend for himself with the
Alexandria trainer still assisting
Akwesasne’s MacDougall.
Larocque says his netminder
was down on the ice for several minutes before he was able
to regroup.
In the GM’s comments to the
conference president, Larocque
notes that Akwesasne tapes
every game, encouraging
Shorey to take the opportunity
to review the recording.
The Glens GM was responding to a notice from Shorey
that trainers must be diligent in
filling out injury reports for
their players, though Larocque
expressed concern about
Akwesasne with the team having no trainer on duty.
Roster moves
At the Dec. 1 cutdown deadline last week, Alexandria
made several moves, including
the signing of 18-year-old
Jonathan Fitzpatrick off the

season to get him.
Coach Marc Sauve says
Fitzpatrick “wanted a change”
from the struggling Lions and
will add some size to the Glens.
The team released local player Tyler O’Brien who was looking for more ice time.
Instead, O’Brien will now
play in Maxville, following in
the footsteps of his older brother, Shane, who was a star with
the Mustangs just a couple of
seasons ago.
The final move saw defenceman Sam Rodrigue join the
Glens. The veteran player has
experience as a forward too,
having played four seasons
with Char-Lan.
He saw his first action
Saturday night in Akwesasne,
having not played for the
Rebels this year, and Sauve
says the athlete will go a long
way to stabilizing the Glens
defence.
To get the rights to Rodrigue,
Alexandria dealt Jared
McDonald to Char-Lan.
Larocque says he may consider signing a third goaltender
as insurance, with Quann
forced to sit out both upcoming
games this weekend and his
emotions always a risk.
The team has four cards
available for any upcoming
signings or deals.

Sting to vie for a title
For the third year in a row, the Eastern
Ontario Sting Juvenile boys broomball team will
represent Ontario at the National Juvenile
Broomball Championships, which will be held
March 23-27, 2010, in Balgonie, Saskatchewan.
At the qualifying tournament held recently in
Barrie, Ontario, the Sting went 4-0 in defending
their title as the boys played outstanding broomball and outscored opponents 9-1 with three
shutouts.
The Sting opened the compettion with a
game-one win against the Windsor Devils, 2-0.
Goal scorers were Wendel Baker and Jake
Billingham, with Tyler Leduc and Zachary
Leclerc drawing assists. Colby Huybregts was in
net for the shutout.
The second game pitted the boys against the
Blythe Renegades, and the Sting were victorious
again, taking the match 4-0.
Finding the net were Matt Moran, Kyle
Toupin, Baker, and Connor Hanna, and assists
went to Travis Nixon, Moran, and two for Paul
Norman. Huybregts and Cameron Muir shared
the shutout.
In the tournament’s double knockout format
where teams have to lose twice to be eliminated,
the Sting ended up playing their rivals, the
Eastern Ontario Icedogs, in the next two games.
The first match was a battle of unbeaten
squads, though the Sting prevailed 2-1.
Sting goal scorers were Baker and Norman,
while helpers went to Leduc and Baker.
The second meeting between the teams was a
tight defensive battle, with the Sting taking a
hard-fought 1-0 decision, enough to secure the
title for the third straight year.
Toupin scored the tournament-winning goal
with Norman assisting. Huybregts backstopped
his team to the shutout victory.
The Sting coaches and players would like to
thank the parents and fans who travelled to
Barrie to support the boys.
Special appreciation is extended to Steve
Norman, Keith Presley, and Clayton Ouderkirk,
the Sting coaching staff, for their time in training
the team for this tournament.

Jessy Seguin of the Peewee B1 Glens and NGS’ Kyle Vander Wielen fight for puck
control. In this Thursday night game, the Glens rode Cameron MacPherson’s hat trick
to a 7-1 decision over the Braves. Qattani Legroulx added a pair of goals, while Dakota
Chisholm and John Alexander each counted singles. In the return engagement on
Saturday, the Alexandria squad was not as successful, capping a disheartening winless tournament performance with a 1-0 overtime loss to the same NGS Braves, in the
tournament C final. The Glens found themselves overmatched against teams from
Gananoque and the Ottawa area, falling 5-0 to Kanata and 7-2 to a strong Gananoque
squad. The C final, between the two local squads, was a close, tight-checking affair,
played by a pair of tired teams. Both goalies, Alex Zarifi for the Glens and Jonathon
Buiting for the Braves, had to be sharp to keep the game scoreless. Matters were finally decided with less than a minute to play in the overtime. As so often happens in
these situations, the play began with Buiting making a big save at one end and the
puck going in at the other. Zarifi made the initial save on a breakaway by Alexa
Beehler, but Haley Verville was there to bury the puck on the ensuing goalmouth
scramble. The tournament had its upside for the Glens, though, as MacPherson took
home the prize for shooting accuracy, and the trio of Alexander, Legroulx, and
