- Steve Ashcraft
And a good day was had by all. SJR and the NJ BMW club shared an event today at Camden. Approximately 80 cars got in
6 runs followed by some practice runs. Fifty-one drivers were competing for season points with SJR. The course was another
superb one by Jim Blanton. It was targeted to the Bimmers since this was really their event and SJR was just along for the
ride. Not too many off courses and not too many cones and, in general, just a fun — hang out the tail - course. The success
of the event was the result of the many SCCA members from NNJR, SJR, Philly, and Susquehana (and I probably missed
someone) who jumped in and helped the BMW folks put on a fine show. Thanks to everyone who helped. The list of people
would be too long and they all know who they are anyway ;-) It is always a great pleasure to see people share their experience with others.

SJR Event 2 4-14-2002
No rain. Lots of sunshine. 59 drivers. A devious, sneaky course devised by Jim Blanton and tamed by Perry Aidelbaum (PAX
Winner). Perry stated,” It was a great course.” Jim stated (smiling),”If I’d known it was going to be so tough to get into that
slalom I would have changed it.” Personally, I just chose to drive the wrong way into the slalom 8 times just to prove that it
was slower. John Borden proved that if you trust your tires you can find over a second on your last run. The folks from Philly
came through with lots of help and Stephen Rosenberg even took home FTD. Thanks to all of the folks who made it another
great autocross and we hope to see you next week-end. Please send any corrections to me at [email protected]
(Unless your first name is Matt and you want me to change the way I think your last name should be spelled ;-) I hope
everyone had as much fun as I did.

South Jersey Results 4/21/02
Another fine spring day — colder than last week but it didn’t rain until we were passing out awards. This was a good thing
otherwise everyone would have been there and the state of the results might have resulted in a small Camden riot. Due to a
number of circumstances (which need not be enumerated) the results of the event are a little bit confused. Please take a
look and send any corrections to me at [email protected] Other than the results, the event was a blast. The
course (designed by Andre Downey) was fast and had a couple of technical challenges. Take a look at the year to date
results — some close classes. Since next event could be SJR’s last event of the year unless an autocross site falls out of
the heaven, the next event may determine the SJR 2002 champions. If we only get four events this year then 3 events will
count towards the end of year championships. Good Luck.

MERRITT’S CITGO MR2 at SUMMIT POINT, WV (26-28 April, 2002)
Monday 4 Sept – Thurs 25 April: The biggest job over the winter was getting the bodywork done. All the front body
panels from the parts car, which had been painted by guests at the NHIS race last summer, were installed. The passenger
door was also transplanted from the parts car to the racecar. The minor dings in the rear quarter panels (which are part of
the unibody and can’t be removed) were hammered/pulled out and Bondo’d smooth. The big crunch in the right rear
quarter panel (from the Oct 00 race) was cut out and a replacement (cut from the parts car) was welded and riveted
in. The plastic front air dam, that used to be riveted to the OEM air dam, was replaced with an aluminum one that is
attached with ¼ turn Dzus fasteners. That way it can be removed (when the car is loaded into/unloaded out of the trailer)
so it doesn’t drag on the ramp and cause damage to the front fenders. A horizontal lip 1/4” wide was welded to the bottom
edge of the new air dam to help keep air from flowing under the car. The plastic piece that closes off the opening between
the bottom of the radiator and the front bumper was replaced with sheet metal. The gaps between the radiator and the
frame were sealed with insulating foam. The right side engine compartment vent piece was replaced with a different one
from a slightly newer car because it should flow more air into the engine compartment. All the panels that hadn’t previously been painted in NH, were sanded down and another painting party was held at home in NJ to carry the “free expression” motif over the rest of the car. The Toyota Racing Development (TRD) headers, which have been used on the engine
since before Peter bought it in the fall of 1997, start as 1.5” tubing at each of the four exhaust ports on the head. Those
four pipes merge into two 1.75” pipes and those two merge into a single 2.25” opening. Peter’s mistake last year (when
he replaced the exhaust from the header back) was using only 2” pipe with crush bends in it. The combination of reduced
diameter and the restriction from the crush bends was probably/hopefully the cause of the power loss he experienced last
summer. After much deliberation on whether to use 2.25” (better torque/low RPM power) or 2.5” (better high RPM
power), a new 2.5” pipe was made up (by Mufflex in Trenton, NJ) with non-restrictive mandrel bends in it and a new 2.5”
SuperTrapp muffler was bought and immediately gutted. The front and rear motor mounts were sent away to have another/more material poured into them around the existing rubber. This should allow power that was taken up twisting/
moving the rubber mounts (when the engine was revved up) to be put to the ground instead. Certainly not a lot of power,
but every little bit helps. The right rear lower ball joint had a tear in the rubber boot, so it was replaced. Checking the
corner weights and the alignment was postponed until just before the next race. As usual all the fluids were replaced and
everything was thoroughly cleaned and checked over. Friday 26 April: Peter drove in four sessions over the practice day
using the very worn out dry/slick Hoosiers from last season. The motor felt much stronger and lap times were about
where they were last year with fresh tires. Unfortunately the track personnel didn’t have a sound meter for the open
practice, so the sound level of the new exhaust couldn’t be checked. One showroom stock Neon was particularly resistant
to letting Peter pass and he didn’t want to pull a Banzai move in practice. Perhaps the Neon driver didn’t appreciate
Peter’s new paint job, especially the “Watch Your Ass!!” painted backwards on the front bumper. Saturday 27 April:
Overnight temperatures were in the 30s and since Peter was in Group 1, the first qualifying session was still very cold and
wound up being very short. About three laps into the 15 minute session (not quite long enough to warm up the engine/
transmission/tires), someone dropped an engine full of oil all the way around turns 1 and 2. Between that and 2 other cars
off into the gravel traps, the officials ended the session so that the track could be cleaned up. Unfortunately that meant
Peter couldn’t check his hot tire pressures on the fresher Hoosiers. Things had warmed up nicely for the second qualifying
session right after lunch, which was gridded by times from the first session (a new policy to keep people from lining up
there cars in the paddock too early so they can be first out onto the track). The times were not indicative of true speed
because of the first session being cut short/off so quickly. Peter wound up stuck behind several slower cars, including the
same showroom stock Neon, who even ignored the blue flags being waved by the corner workers for 2 laps. Finally Peter
pulled a late pass into Corner #10 and easily pulled away. The Neon wound up off in the gravel trap of Corner #1 right
after that. When he finally did get a clear lap, Peter was given the “Sound Warning” sign at the start finish line. Instead of
lifting off the gas on the straight (where the sound control meter is stationed) every lap, he just pulled in early. The sound
meter had registered 104 db on the gutted SuperTrapp, so later that afternoon, the perforated tube was installed back into
it. Instead of putting back the fiberglass packing around the perforated tube (which hadn’t made it into the trailer), Peter
loosely wrapped some header/exhaust insulating tape. None of the baffle plates were added on because the reading was
only 2 db over the limit. The hot tire pressures were high (by as much as 5 psi), but Peter still got down to a 1:34.7 lap
time that was good for 12 place on the starting grid. Sunday 28 April: Peter had signed up for the hardship practice in order
to check the sound level before the race, but it wound up being a “get used to the rain tires again and see how flooded the
track is” session because of the rain that had been falling steadily since Saturday night (and didn’t really stop until around
lunch on Sunday).

cont’d.......
Between putting on the rain tires and the spray shield (for the engine intake) there was no time to install the camera and
cover it with a plastic bag, so unfortunately there are no video clips of the race. Other than the start, which is always
particularly blinding because of the spray from the cars ahead, nothing much happened during the race anyway. Peter did
manage to get around a VW Golf (who had started alongside in 11th place) in the first few corners. Over much of the
race, the VW would fall away down the straight and through the first few corners and then catch up again in the second
half of the track. Every once in a while, the VW would feint a pass into the last corner (#10), but Peter held him off
(almost) every time. There was a short pace car period to pull one car out of the gravel trap in Corner #3, but nothing
changed on the restart. On the last lap, they came up to lap another MR2 who was struggling to stay on the track with his
street tires. Not only did this allow Peter to catch up with the RX-7 ahead, but also the VW caught up to him and finally
did get alongside into Corner 10. He tried to draw the VW into the corner so deep under braking that it would slide
off. When that didn’t work, Peter tried taking the last corner as fast as he possibly could, so as to pass again coming out,
but came up half a car length short at the finish line. Final position was 11th overall and 10th in class. Several people
commented on the new paint job over the weekend. At one point someone remarked that it must be a 1966 Toyota MR2.

The usual and enormous thanks to all workers and participants. We ALL know that without both ingredients we
don’t go far in our sport. An expanded write-up appears in the GASLINE newsletter. All members receive and
each non-member team will receive a one time copy of the newsletter.
WORKERS - Al Knystautas, Barbara Nixon, Dan Sandridge @Checkpoint #4 & #8
Jack O’leary, Holly Fleming, Frieda Bartlett @Checkpoint #2 & #6
Marlene Hazen, Hazel Painter, Holly Fleming, Al Knystautas at finish scoring.
Hazel Painter also did pre-event Registration and on site Registration - THANKS TO ALL!!
CONTESTANTS - an entry field very different from last years group which had about 8 or so entries in
NOVICE class. We missed them year with the field being mostly veterans.
Tne handicap system that is used to provide competition in Class Z (SCCA Classes E, L, S) once again
seemed to work well. The raw score of Class L of 383 (Novotne & Mauger) was handicapped at 60% to
230 and the raw score of 864 of Class S (Horoschak & Hess) was handicapped to to 259. The positions
did not change but you can see that it provided a close margin of competition. We really missed the field
of SOP Novice teams that make the events with only two teams present compared to last year at about
eight. There is so much appreciation that the veterans came out to support the event and win or lose
had the opportunity to sit down together at the finish and ‘refresh’. Once again, thanks to all!!

Rally Route
by Clyde Heckler
Longtime SJR members may remember me. Back in the 70’s and 80’s SJR had a very active rally program. We hosted
National and Divisional events. We had a relatively small, but dedicated core group of rallysists, several of which were very
successful, even winning national championships along the way. What happened?
It was a combination of things. There is some difference of opinion here, but there are a few basic reasons. Several in the
core group got married, had kids, and no longer had time to devote to the rally program. Others would argue that the events
got too hard and just weren’t fun anymore. Decreasing attendance, whether from harder events, gas crises, or whatever,
caused rallymaster burnout. Putting on an event for a small turnout just wasn’t worth it. Competition from other activities
increased, costs were higher, and on and on. All of the above contributed, but in my mind, failing to bring in “new blood” was
the ultimate reason, because no one was there to step in when we old-timers grew tired.
So now we’re going to try and resurrect a rally program from the ashes and perhaps not repeat some of the same mistakes.
We’re going to start small. Rallying has always been a spring and fall sport. Winter weather can be unpredictable (although
it seems to snow less and less) and in the summer everyone’s “down the shore” and generally busy with other things. We’re
going to attempt to put on a rally in the fall and another in the following spring. We will have support from Philadelphia
Region (rally chairmen Allen Hefner), as well as Brandywine Motor Club (rally chairman David Teter). We hope to eventually
offer a series, perhaps with an annual championship, but that’s still a ways away. We initially foresee some cooperative
efforts to publicize events with club members not only running their own club’s events, but attending those of the other two
clubs as well. We’ve already had a meeting to discuss some preliminary ways of cooperating.
I know some of you have already run BMC or Philly region events. Others are interested in trying a rally, but have yet to
actually enter one. I want to hear from you. Send an email to [email protected] or give me a call. The best bet is the
office number 215-246-6622. What types of events would you like to see SJR sponsor? What types of events don’t you
like? Would a rally school before or after a meeting be a good idea? I’ll let you know what the consensus seems to be. Our
first event will probably run in Salem County, which has some of the best roads and scenery.
We’re open to suggestions, but certain things are, at least currently, off the table. Our first events will not be “trap” (tricks)
oriented, and will be geared to the newcomer. While I know some of you would like to blast around the sand roads in the
Pine Barrens, that will have to wait until later. We’re currently thinking of what’s known as a Monte Carlo type event. The
location of (and mileage to) the checkpoints will be included in the route instructions, as well as the perfect arrival time.
What could be easier? Little or no calculations, no average speeds to maintain, all you have to do is drive some scenic
roads and cross the line at your time, but you can’t stop in sight of the checkpoint. Does that sound appealing? Does it
sound boring? Some of you might ask “Why not begin with a question and answer rally?” Our feeling was that we want
there to be some automotive skill involved. This is a car club after all. But we do want to know what you think.
TRI REGION RETURNS TO POCONO LONG COURSE
Long Pond, PA.
The Tri Region Race Group announced that it will return to the famed Pocono Long Course that it used for
SCCA Club Racing events from 1986 thru 1998. This configuration uses both NASCAR Turns 1 and 2, the
Long Pond Straight without a chicane and the North road course section. For the past three years, a combined
road course utilizing both the North and South road course sections has been used. This course has received
mixed comments, both positive and negative, from NEDiv competitors. Difficulties with the course set up and
maintenance of the high standards of SCCA racing safety have led Tri Region to this decision.
Tri Region will present two weekends of SCCA racing at Pocono in 2002. On 21-23 June there will be a Drivers School on Friday accompanied by a two day NARRC / NYSRRC Regional Race and a revival of the Pocono
Touring Challenge for street tire cars. The traditional Pocono Sports Car Grand Prix NESCCA Double National
will be held on 2-4 August.
In order for competitors to re-familiarize themselves with the Long Course, there will be SCCA Test Days before
both weekend events. There will be a limited Test Day for competitors on 21 June, concurrent with the Drivers
School. There will be a full Test Day on 1 August prior to the NESCCA Double National.

BOARD MEETING
South Jersey Region-Sports Car Club of America, Inc.
March 2002
The March 2002 meeting of the Board of Directors for the South Jersey Region, Sports Car Club of America, Inc. was held at the home
of John Borden on Wednesday evening, March 6, 2002.
The meeting was called to order by R.E., Jim Tornetta at 8:30 PM.
Present were: John Borden, Jim Tornetta, Sue King, Kurt Schenk, Nick DiMeo, Jack Oliver and Ed Jenks.
Treasurer’s Report – Jack reported a balance in the operating account of $2,694.00. Bills for the annual banquet totaled $2,500.00
which did not include the trophies. Trophies cost $800.00.
Tri-Region – Jack reported that NNJR will be running counterclockwise for the May event. The Chronomix will be shipped March 15th
for timing and scoring. The location for T & S has not bee resolved. They are talking about using school buses to house timing and
scoring-this was proposed by NEPa. Radios will be rented. The drivers school and the test and tune day will be combined for Friday.
Test and tune will have three 20 minute sessions. Tri-Region is still looking for a T & S chief.
Rausch Creek – Ed reported that they are talking about dirt track motorcycle stuff and they hope to get the track done this year.
Solo II – Kurt reported that there are three dates in April, the 7th, 14th and 21st. One date in May, the 4th – the venue is Camden. Trophies
were discussed. Suggestions covered
t-shirts for first place, also magnets were suggested. Kurt felt that we would need 12 first place trophies. Kurt will check his supplier
for other types of trophies and report back.
Rally – Jim attended a meeting with Philadelphia Region, BMC and our Region representatives. They will try to create a rally group to
put on TSD and gimmick type rallies. BMC is normally the group to put on fun type rallies but their membership has dwindled but they
feel that if they team up with the SCCA people but not be a part of SCCA but be an associate member of our Region - they will do most
of the heavy duty work and get a lot of publicity out and getting people to show up may boost their group to come up in membership.
At this meeting there was a lot of discussion on how best to put together a first class event and get out the publicity. Tentative date
for the first event is the first weekend in June-length of 60 to 70 miles with 8 checkpoints. Alan Hefner from Philadelphia Region and
Clyde Heckler from our Region are getting together on this event.
Roundtable – Jack and Dolores Oliver and Sue will be attending the Roundtable in Painted Post, NY.
New Business – J.D. was contacted by Herb Sharp from the South Jersey Mustang Club and he invited a representative of our club to
attend one of their meetings as members of their club are very interested in Solo II and Solo I. They meet the first Thursday of each
month at the Vineland Fire Company #4 located on Oak Road right off of Main Road. Jim will contact Herb about attending their April
meeting. Sue suggested that Jim take some of our Solo II brochures to this meeting.
Motorsports Show – It was felt by the Board that we should look for alternative venues to replace our attendance at the Pennzoil
Motorsports Show held at Fort Washington.
Old Business – None.
There being no further business, meeting was adjourned at 9:30 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Sue King
Secretary
** Thanks Darlene **
A big thanks goes out to Darlene Cookson for her generous contribution of
our generator for Solo II. As most of you know Kingsley brought to the events all
the power we needed to run our equipment for many years. In his memory,
Darlene helped us secure a wonderful Honda generator to power our events. It is
the little red thing that you can’t hear running, very quiet, smooth and should
provide us with reliable power for many years to come. The Cookson family has
provided our group with lots of help, whether it be electricity, timing and scoring,
or just plain sportsmanship, we really appreciate you guys!
Thanks for being an example of the best of our SCCA family.
