The first quarter of 2014 started with several activities showcasing the professionalism and
desire of each tanker to excel in several endeavour. I enjoin and encourage our troops to always aspire
for the best and to be the best in everything we do, be it in small or big tasks. The excellence we display
is the reflection of who we are and the level of professionalism we have. As the Philippine Army grows
stronger and attuned to the challenges ahead, we should keep in step with the demands of technology
and modern warfare. This we can do if we are “MECHANIZED”… Men of extraordinary Excellence,
Character, Humility, Attitude, Nobility, Integrity, Zeal, Enthusiasm and Dedicated to our Duty.
Through the years, time and again, our unit has evolved into a better, stronger and more

Symbol of continuity and finest military traditions
Change the Leaves; keep intact your roots.”
-Victor Hugo
Along with the rich and finest military tradition of having a Change-of-Command Ceremony, the
Mechanized Infantry Division recently had a series of Change of Commanders, Staff and Chief of Offices. The
formal passing of responsibility, authority and accountability of command from one officer to another provides the
outgoing an opportunity for career advancement and the incoming to fill in his new role and perform his duties

“MAGBALANTAY”
Guardians and Heroes
Lanao del Norte - At least 13 people were
killed and thousands were displaced from their homes
due to the onslaught of Tropical Storm Agaton that
caused a series of flashfloods and landslides. The
collapse of Napo bridge also isolated Iligan City from
the Western and Northern parts of Mindanao.
January 13, 2014. It was monday night
when heavy rainfall struck Lanao del Norte. Colonel
Demy T. Tejares CAV (GSC) PA, Commander of 2nd
Mechanized Infantry (MAGBALANTAY) Brigade, Mech
Div, PA and his three escorts were on their way back
to Brigade Headquarters from attending “Araw ng
Salvador” and stakeholders engagement in
Bacolod, Lanao del Norte when they were stranded at
Barangay Buru-un due to the massive rainfall and
flooding which caused the collapse of Napo bridge.
Luckily, the Brigade Commander’s vehicle crossed
just in time before the said bridge collapsed.
Heavy rains flooded the highway connecting
Barangay Maria Cristina to Barangay Buru-un, all of
Iligan City which stranded commuters and passengers
alike. The continuous rising of sea level and flashfloods
destroyed houses along the Linamon River and Iligan
Bay. Linamon Barangay Captain Renato L. Ancis tried
his best to protect and help his constituents and move
to safer ground from Barangay Linamon to Barangay
Buru-un gymnasium. "It's a nightmare," he said. “The
water is rising continuously. We have to move to a
safer place as soon as possible.”
The thick dark water along the highway is
now hip-deep. What caught our attention was a
commotion that happened when a lady barangay
official together with some children cried and trembled
in fear. The said barangay official was carrying
something and we found out that it was a 13-day old
cyanotic infant shivering in cold covered by wet
blanket. Immediately Col. Tejares and Cpl. Flor, a
registered nurse took the infant and put him on
a table inside the Barangay Hall of Buru-un and
started to revive the said infant. They removed
the wet blanket and under garments and replaced
them by a large size diaper which was bought by
Col. Tejares supposedly for his grandson. A dry
blanket from a Barangay Tanod was borrowed by
the Brigade Commander at the said barangay hall
to help keep the infant warm. After a few minutes of
massage by Cpl. Flor, the infant slowly recovered and
his skin changed color from bluish black to pinkish
until he became normal and started crying. The mother
was so happy and told us that they were stranded and
soaked in flood waters inside their house for about
four hours waiting to be rescued until a female
barangay official discovered them and brought the
baby to the Buru-un Barangay Hall.
Hundreds of commuters were stranded that
night and the brigade commander ordered the 4th Mech
Bn under Lt. Col. Ibon to send V-150 and KM250
vehicles to ferry stranded passengers from Iligan City
to Linamon. Likewise, 3rd Cavalry Squadron and 32IB
were ordered to ferry stranded passengers across the
Napo River using the Brigade’s two (2) rubber boats.
The DRRMO said that the flooding damaged
several bridges and isolated some towns, as well as
8,000 hectares (20,000 acres) of planted corn and rice
were destroyed.
To us, it was another day of helping our people.
Doing our best to keep them out of danger and after
the storm, assist them in returning back to their normal
lives.

SHARIFF AGUAK, Maguindanao…The 1st

Task Force KADTATABANGA is an organization which

PENETRATOR Penetrates Enemy Camp
Once again the 21st Mechanized Infantry
(PENETRATOR) Company proved its might when
the unit was tasked as the Main Effort during the
conduct of “OPLAN MUSTANG” of the 2nd Mechanized
Infantry (MAKASAG) Battalion, Mechanized Division,
Philippine Army.
On the dawn of January 27, 2014, Captain
Lito B. Maghuyop (CAV) PA, Commanding Officer of
21st Mechanized Infantry Company led six armored
vehicles composed of fifty four (54) personnel to
conduct Law Enforcement Operations at the
strongholds of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom
Fighters at Brgy. Damablas, Datu Piang and Brgy.
Ganta, Shariff Saydona Mustapha both municipalities
of Maguindanao.
Despite the advantage of the enemy in terms
of terrain and the possibility of the enemy to conduct
“Pintakasi” (small group attacks), the Penetrators were
able to penetrate deep into the enemy strongholds and
capture its bases.
After a series of skirmishes and firefights, the
21st Mech Coy reached and captured the main camp
of BIFF at Brgy. Ganta, Shariff Saydona Mustapha,
Maguindanao which is also known as “Cp Saad
Bin-Abiwakas” last January 31, 2014. On that very
date, the unit together with the 45th Infantry Battalion
personnel raised the Philippine Flag for the first time,
emphasizing a clear message to the BIFF that the
Philippine Army is serious in neutralizing and
addressing all threats to peace anywhere and anytime
across the land.
The 21st Mechanized Infantry (PENETRATOR)
Company proved its worth in performing every
assigned tasks and adheres to the motto of “Serving
the people, Securing the land” not only in its
designated area of operations but also in the Area of
Responsibility of the 6th Infantry Division, Philippine
Army which gave credit not only to the 2nd Mechanized
Infantry (Makasag) Battalion but to the Mechanized
Infantry Division as well. We will continue the change
and penetrate any barrier that will hinder lasting peace
of our people.
The New Breed of Soldiers
Men in uniform are always perceived
as tough, courageous, strict individuals with a
heart of steel. More often than not, they are even
branded as human robots since the world they
belong is not the life a normal and carefree civilian has.
They are always expected to be proficient in combat,
efficient in warfare, traversing mountainous ranges
and unforgiving jungles. When you ask people how
they describe a soldier, you can often hear from them
is that they did not have the chance to mingle with
soldiers ever since. Soldiers rarely mingle and interact
with the populace. Even if you ask a child, they can
easily describe soldiers as masculine wearing fatigue
uniform holding rifle with hundreds of bullets wrapped
around them with a big back pack carried at their back.
Throughout the years, men in uniform,
gradually changed their image. In the Philippine
Army to be particular, its leadership see the need to
change the way a soldier should be perceived. The
importance of adapting to the fast changing world was
noticed upon. That’s why inch by inch, soldiers try to
create an impression that they will be looked upon as
part of the society that a normal civilian has and not
the old school image that was categorized to those
who wear the fatigue uniform.
This is the very reason why our AFP
came up with the IPSP BAYANIHAN. A tool that
will pave its way in bridging the gap among our
stakeholders, constituents and benefactors; a breach
that was shaped long time ago and is now being
fixed and molded upon. With the advent of the said
IPSP BAYANIHAN, our soldiers innovated ways
on how they can revise the past branded brute like
character into tame and easy to get along with
individuals. The need to bring up this kind of new
breed of soldiers is appreciated by the 3rd Mechanized
By: 1LT RANI V BIROG (CAV) PA
Infantry (MAKATARUNGAN) Battalion. Hand in hand
we initiated actions that continuously create a new
positive image of our soldiers noticeable to the people
we serve. We opted to be always visible in the eyes
of the people making them feel that we are part of the
society. Aside from being the protector of the people,
we also give emphasis in becoming their partners in
nation building. As the term “Bayanihan” connotes, the
unit works hand in hand with different stakeholders
to come up with activities that will benefit the people
we are mandated to serve especially the Tarlakenyos.
As part of the 7ID, PA Campaign Plan
“BAYANIHAN SA BARANGAY” and 3rd Mechanized
Battalion CMO Action Plan CY 2014, the unit in
collaboration with the Filipino-American League of

“KALASAG” LAUNCHES
CIVIC ACTION PROGRAM
-bUmbLe Bee-
Camo Pintoy, Iligan City - The 4th
Mechanized
Infantry
(Kalasag)
Battalion,
Mechanized Infantry Division, Philippine Army
under the leadership of Lt. Col. Danilo G. Ibon CAV
(GSC) PA in partnership with ABS-CBN Lingkod
Kapamilya Foundation Inc. Northern Mindanao
headed by Ms. Aizza G. Magallanes initiated a
Civic Action Program dubbed as “Sagip Kapamilya/
Bantay Bata 163 Caravan” at Deus Caritas Village,
Brgy. Luinab, Iligan City last February 22, 2014.
A Civic Action Program is a combined
activity of different services which includes Medical
and Dental services, feeding activity, free haircut,
manicure and pedicure, circumcision, distribution
of slippers and assorted food packs provided by
different institutions to help the beneficiaries who are
below the poverty line who need assistance. The said
activity was organized by this unit together with ABSCBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation Inc. Northern
Mindanao and the help of the different stakeholders,
LGUs of Iligan City and other Government Agencies.
The populace of Deus Caritas Village are
several families who were victims of the Typhoon
Photos by: PFC Bryan N Nova
Sendong last December 2011 who lost almost
everything including their houses, clothings,
properties and for some even their loved ones.
For this reason, the unit with the support of their
partner
stakeholders decided that
these
families should be attended to especially with their
medical needs.
After the successful completion of the
program, a total of fifty seven (57) for tooth
extraction, five hundred (500) for Medical Checkup, sixteen (16) for circumcision, two hundred
(200) for haircut, twenty (20) for manicure &
pedicure, eight hundred (800) for feeding, six
hundred forty three (643) for distribution of slippers
and two hundred eighty (280) for distribution of
assorted food packs were given to different
beneficiaries.
“We are very thankful to our partners in
realizing this kind of activity, indeed, without them
we cannot achieve this and through the bayanihan
concept it was a successful activity and as always,
we do say we do the job the best way we can”
Lt. Col. Ibon said.
Tagapanguna:
Significant in Basilan
The 1st Cavalry Squadron, Mechanized
Infantry Division continuously contribute significantly
to the OBJECTIVES of the Strategic Intent of the AFP
IPSP “Bayanihan” specifically to “defeat the ASG, JI,
and their allied armed threat groups” and “support
developmental, environmental protection, disaster
risk reduction and management, and law enforcement
activities”. 1CAV supports the “winning the peace”
strategic approach of the Joint Taskforce “ZAMPELAN”
(JTFZ) through sustain, responsive and robust armor
operations. One of the line units of 1CAV, the 11th Light
Armored Cavalry Troop (11LACT) conducted armor
operations in Basilan which is a priority of the national
government in security and development concerns.
Captain Rey Valencia (CAV) PA, Commander of
11LACT and his subordinates are very thankful for the
chance they have in helping the Basilenos achieve their
aspiration to live in a place where peace and security reigns
while pushing for sustainable economic development. As a
soldier saying goes, “many aspire to be posted in Basilan
but only few are chosen and given the opportunity”.
Filipinos of today may only know about
Basilan as the place in Southern Philippines that
provide haven for terrorists and kidnappers where
people thrive on blazing gunfires from the government
troops and the lawless elements or commonly known
before as bandits and now as terrorists. This perception
hinders the economic development of the province even
though they have the resources needed. One has to know
what Basilan really is.
Basilan is one of the richest provinces in the
south in terms of agricultural and aquatic resources,
diverse cultures and pristine tourist destinations like white
sand beaches and coral reefs. The province now has 2
cities and 11 municipalities that administer 256 inner,
coastal and island barangays. It has a population
of around 400,000 residents of Christians and the
Muslim tribes of Yakans, Tausugs, Samals and Badjaos
occupying a land area of 1,379 square kilometres. The
island sustains its economic survivability through vast
rubber and coconut plantations augmented by coffee,
cacao and abaca crops. It has rich coastlines that provide
the local fishermen bountiful catch of numerous types
of fishes and other aquatic and marine resources such as
squids, lobsters and the famous curacha.
Withstanding decades of armed conflict from the
MNLF and MILF uprising, Abu Sayyaf Group terrorists and
thriving ridos, Basilan deserves better conditions. The
AFP has been assisting the local government units to
restore peace and security and serves as catalyst in
economic and infrastructure development. The
Philippine Army, thru the 104th Infantry Brigade has been
exerting vigorous efforts in collaboration with the LGU’s
to accomplish a multi-faceted objective of transforming
Basilan into a stable and significant player in both local
and national economic activities.
The 11th LACT has been conducting armor
operations in support of other ground units and law
enforcement agencies. It secures the construction
company that is presently concreting the rough segment
of the Basilan Circumferential Road (BCR) specifically
in the municipalities of Al-Barka, Ungkay Pukan,
Tipo-Tipo, Sumisip and Maluso. The gallant tankers
secure the major corridors through patrols and robust
posturing that demonstrate armor capabilities and
readiness to deter enemy plans of violent activities. It ably
secures the workers that have already completed 61% of
the programmed worked for the un-concreted segments.
The presence of armor units and capabilities ensure the
people of their safety as well as instilling respect on the
enemy of what tankers are capable of doing and
accomplishing.
The sight of extended concreted roads with
houses mushrooming and booming retail merchandise

Lanao del Norte - Brgy. Pagayawan is one
of the sixteen Barangays of Bacolod, Lanao del
Norte which has five muslim barangays and eleven
Christian Sitios. Pagayawan hosts a diverse community
including the Border Command of the MNLF led by
CMDR ABEDIN SANGUILA @ CMDR TARAPAS
occupying Camp Datumanong as well as a good
number of MILF fighters. It was also one of the
conflict affected areas during the previous wars in
Lanao del Norte and has become almost deserted.
Recent peace and development projects, however,
are slowly transforming the place into a progressive
barangay. Pagayawan Elementary School is the only
school in the area with a total number of 362 Pupils
from Kindergarten to Grade VI of which 50% are MNLF
dependents, 40% are MILF dependents and the other
10% are dependents of plain citizens of the barangay.
Said school was selected by the 3rd Cavalry Squadron
and the Soldiers Wives and Girlfriends (SWAG)
Philippines Incorporated as the beneficiary of the
“ADOPT A SCHOOL LIBRARY PROJECT/FEEDING
PROGRAM AND FREE HAIRCUT” to help build the
place and reach out to the MNLF and the MILF
communities.
The KAAGAPAY Squadron Staff Officers
and personnel under the leadership of Lt. Col.
Leonidas L. Hidalgo CAV (GSC) PA continuously exert
its efforts to promote partnership with the stakeholders
within the unit area of operations. As a result of the
continues linkaging to the different sectors of the
government and to the non-government organizations,
the “Adopt a School Library Project/Feeding Program
and Free Haircut” were conducted at Pagayawan
Elementary School last February 28, 2014 at around
9 a.m. This was a joint project of the unit together
with the Soldiers Wives and Girlfriends (SWAG)
Philippines Incorporated, Lanao Chapter in
cooperation with the 32IB, 1ID, PA, LGU of Bacolod,
LDN and DepEd.
The activity started with a short program:
National Anthem, Invocation, Welcome Remarks by
Mr. Ali D. Mutia, the PTA President of Pagayawan
Elementary School. The inspirational talk by Ms.
Mary Grace T. Roble, SWAG Philippines Inc, Lanao
Chapter Coordinator was followed by the Ceremonial HandOver of Books by Lt. Col. Hidalgo and Ms. Mary Grace
T. Roble for the Pagayawan Elementary School Library.
Afterwhich, Hon. Raymond C. Santos, Vice Mayor of
Bacolod, Lanao Del Norte delivered a short message
and expressed his heartfelt thanks to the donors of the
project. This was followed by a message of Lt. Col.
Hidalgo and the Closing Remarks by Mrs. Venus B.

School. The program was subsequently followed by
the feeding of the pupils. The Free Haircut meanwhile
commenced upon the start of the Program. There
were also parlor games in the afternoon for the pupils
wherein all winners received prizes from SWAG Phils
Inc.
Our media partners were also present to cover
the event. Right after the program, Lt. Col. Hidalgo,

Army Aviation soars HIGHER
-SKIPPER-
In the operation of any aviation flight activities,
one of the most critical segment of the operation is the
maintenance of the airframe and powerplants. Failure in
one of these will mean possible damage or loss of life
and property. Every man responsible for the maintenance
of an aircraft or any of its parts or components bears a
serious responsibility to the public, to himself and to the
organization. He must perform his work in such a way
that when he has completed a particular inspection,
repair or overhaul job, he can say: “This aircraft will not fail”.
Persons new to aviation may wonder why
aircraft maintenance is so costly and its parts should
only be bought through Original Equipment Manufacturer
(OEM). They may also wonder why despite series of
redundant inspections being performed before, during
and after every operation, the aircraft still has to be
grounded for more inspection which is more extensive.
This is what makes the aircraft maintenance so
expensive and at the same time it is the reason why
airplanes are considered the safest mode of
transportation. But a mere neglect or failure to
comply with standard maintenance safety procedure
would mean a catastrophe which can cause fear for
people to ride an airplane.
Here in the Army Aviation Battalion,
Mechanized Infantry Division, PA we don’t just fix the
aircraft to be air worthy we also enforce refinement system
for the pilots and crew as well, for we strongly believe
that human factor is a big consideration.
Through the leadership of Lt. Col. Danilo O.
Cariño CAV (GSC) PA, the unit was able to craft
several Standard Operating Procedure and guidelines
that every member of the unit must adhere to not just for
safety purposes but also for the improvement of the unit
being the sole flying component of the Philippine Army.
Among the crafted SOP is the Standard Tenets
for Aviator’s Refinement System (STAR) which aims to
prov ide ev ery army av iat ors it s l imi t a t io n s a n d
precautionary measures to effectively manage risk and
minimize the accidental loss of aviation personnel and
equipment. To ensure that corrective actions/controls to
improve performance are identified and included in the
training management cycle and unit SOP, to observe
flight and ground operations to detect and correct unsafe
practices, observe aviation maintenance operations,
making recommendations to correct unsafe procedures
and practices, and monitoring the Safety of Flight (SOF)
Program and to encourage voluntary reporting of safety
issues and events to support the Army Aviation Safety
Program are also contained here with this SOP is
applicable not only to the organic aviators of the Battalion
but also to the other stakeholders who may see it useful
for them.
Likewise the crafting of another SOP for
Aircraft Markings for PA Aircraft is very timely for the
newly restored aircraft because this aims to standardize
the paint scheme and markings of all our air assets, to
be distinct from the ones being used by other flying units
of the AFP while it enhances the invulnerability of our
air assets from detection during aerial reconnaissance
and will conform to the requirements of international law
pertaining to military aircraft markings.
Presently, the standard markings are already
being applied to the three (3) aircrafts of which two
(2) are newly restored. The PA 501 (Cessna 150L)
which will be utilized for training purposes and the PA
102 (Cessna 172M) which will be utilized for aerial
missions. This new paint scheme gives our air assets a
stunning and vibrant look. Likewise, the new upholstery
and cabin furnishing will give more comfort to the pilots
and crew. With these two additional air assets, the unit

Maintaining the Standards of Service
In line with its mission of “providing armored
vehicle maintenance support to sustain the operational
capability of the Mechanized Infantry Division,” the
Armor Maintenance (Masinop) Battalion has continuously
conducted maintenance-related training to enhance
the skills of its personnel as well as those from field
units.
Last December 18, 2013, AMBn conducted the
Opening Ceremony of the Armor Vehicle Mechanic
Training Class 04-2013 with students coming from
AMBn itself and other Luzon-based armor units. The
objectives of this training are to impart the knowledge
and skills of maintenance personnel in the repair
and overhaul of all types of armored vehicles in the
Division’s inventory and to train prospective maintenance
personnel who will replace those who are due for
retirement.
The training program consists of short
lectures and demonstrations conducted by personnel of
the Heavy Maintenance Company, AMBn followed
by hands-on practical exercises. The emphasis on
practical exercises enable the students to apply
whatever they have learned in the lectures and at the
same time deal with common maintenance-related
issues normally encountered in the field.
With the projected deployment of armored vehicles
as part of the Philippine contingent to the United Nations
Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in Golan
Heights, the knowledge and skills of the thirteen
students were put to the test. Under the supervision
of the training NCOs, the students were able to
successfully finish various practical exercises using
the UNDOF AV’s as their training platform. Recently
the Bn manage to finished the conduct of AV Mechanic
training which enhance the skill of our troops.
We believe that a well-rounded Armor personnel
not only knows how to drive an AV, fire its gun but most
importantly, has the knowledge and skill to
maintain and repair his fighting vehicle if be needed.
Here in AMBn, we make this happen.

Towards an Excellent Environment
On March 3, 2014, Lt. Col. Sidney V. Atega
(CAV) GSC, PA was installed as the new Commanding
Officer of Headquarters and Headquarters Service
Battalion. The change of command comes with
challenges as the former made innovations for the
improvement of the Camp. One of which, the Commander
Mech Div, Brig. Gen. Dela Cruz gave emphasis
to enhance the personal capability of our individual
soldier. Some of the activities noteworthy are the
change of commanders of the Rapid Deployment
Force and Military Police Company which are now
led by Maj. Noli Binbinon (CAV) PA and Maj. Roger G.
Conmigo (CAV) PA respectively.
For the past days, beautification of the camp
was prioritized next to physical fitness. Ornamental,
herbal, and vegetables such as squash, corn, watermelon,
etc. and fruit bearing trees were planted. Different
signages has been placed such as speed limit of
vehicles, directions as to where the different offices
are. HHSBn is also in the process of upgrading the
bike trail with challenging stages for troops and visitors
who are cycling enthusiast.
On the other hand, Zumba was introduced
to our soldiers. With the movement of the body
while feeling the music, mounted warriors hop to
the tune as we sweat it out. This distinct exercise may
become an individual’s wake up call to be more
active and more physically fit and be able to join fun
run, marathon, duathlon or even triathlon and future
Mechanized Division “Bakal Challenges”. The
Commanding General, Philippine Army Lt. Gen.
Hernando DCA Iriberri AFP, joined us in one of our
Zumba sessions last April 8, 2014 and the “Bakal
Challenge” last May 1, 2014.
Lt. Col. Atega now exerts effort in making into
a reality a mini zoo and orchidarium. These places will
become places where our soldiers and visitors from
different walk of life may visit and relax. Maintenance
of our fruit bearing trees such as mangoes adds to the
food on the table and other income of our soldiers.
These endeavors become possible with hard work
and diligence of the men and women of Mech Div. Let
us join hands and work to make them happen.
educating the BEST
and the BRIGHTEST
In today’s society, education is one of the
most indispensable elements in the success of an
individual. In the profession of arms, training and
education empowers a soldier with the essential
knowledge and skills which makes him capable in
doing his job and hurdle
the challenges ahead. It is
a continuous process - a
never ending one even he
departs from the service.
The Armor School
(Kahusayan)
with
the
school’s mission to conduct
training for cavalry officers
and enlisted personnel as
part of career advancement
in the Philippine Army, organic
personnel of Mechanized
Infantry Division, Philippine Army and other branch of
service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, are
catered to by the school as well as army students
from different countries which has armor as
specialization. To accomplish this, the school not
only conducts, but also supervises the standardization
of academic and non-academic instructions of all
career and specialization courses that emphasizes
on general military subjects and other armor-related
lessons. This equips every personnel not only with
the individual skills required for the efficient and
effective combatants in the field, but also develop
every soldier’s character, leadership, personality
and moral values.
(by: penguincanfly / lclunag)
For the calendar year 2014, The Armor
School had started to cater to students from different
Army units who wishes to specialize on armor
operations. The school has completed four (4) Armor
Career Courses, one of which was conducted by
the Mobile Training Team
(MTT) at 6th Army Training
Group in Awang DOS,
Maguindanao.
Currently,
the school is handling three
(3) Career Courses and
is continuously conducting
other essential trainings
such as Restructured
Reenlistment
Trainings
(RRT) and other In-Service
Trainings. In addition, the
school
has
trained
ninety-three
(93)
new
recruits to amplify the forward units’ personnel fill-up.
With the current thrust of training and honing
all armor personnel to be the best and the brightest,
the school is continuously evolving into a
professional and competent organization within the
Mechanized Infantry Division.
We believe that a well-trained, and disciplined
soldiers is the enemy’s worst nightmare. As such,
we make sure that every soldier gets the proper
training and has his mind set towards excellence.

“R
Dubbed as “Regalo ni Sarhento”, a CMO related
project initiated by 1st Light Armored Cavalry Troop
(Separate), aims to donate used clothing, foot wears,
books and other school supplies, toys and bags to
indigent families within its area of operation. The items
to be distributed were initially collected from 1LACT(S)
organic personnel. This unit will also identify possible
beneficiaries within a selected barangay with the help
of its officials. From there, a gift giving day shall be
scheduled following a simple program at the barangay hall
of which the selected families belong. For a start, the unit
envisions to conduct said activity twice a year. In the long
run, 1LACT(S) desires to expand the collection scheme of
the project from 1LACT(S) individual soldiers to its generous
stakeholders and friends. The project
was first launched last September
26, 2013 with seven (7) families
having a total of 30 members as
recipient.
After the launching of the
CMO project: “Regalo ni Sarhento”
held last September 26, 2013,
personnel of this unit continuously
gather things they rarely use within
their households. Troop Commander,
executed a courtesy call to the City
Mayor of Ilagan City, Hon. Jose Marie L. Diaz regarding
the unit CMO activities particularly the unit’s project:
“Regalo ni Sarhento”, to help this unit select the most
indigent barangay under their responsibility. Further, as
the unit aims to increase the beneficiaries of the project,
CMO NCO of this unit conducted lateral coordination with
the local stakeholders. On November 14, 2013, CMO NCO
coordinated with Dr. Gertrudes T. Acosta, Ed. D., Directress
of Nazareth School of Cabatuan to present said “Regalo
ni Sarhento.” Subsequently, on November 21, 2013, CMO
NCO presented “Regalo ni Sarhento” project before
parents and teachers of Nazareth School of Cabatuan,
Cabatuan, Isabela during the schools’ 4th Quarter Parents
and Teachers Conference. After which, on November 23,
2013 the unit was able to receive donations (used clothing,
foot wears, and old books ) from the parents and
teachers of the Nazareth School of Cabatuan. Likewise,
same coordination was done on November 28, 2013 with
Rev. Ptr. Jose B. Cabajar, Pastor of Ilagan Baptist Church
and presented the project before him. Ilagan Baptist
Church supported the units CMO project. On December 5,
2013 the unit received donations (used clothing and toys)
from Ilagan Baptist Church thru Rev. Ptr. Jose B.
Cabajar. As soon as the unit had enough, personnel
this unit cooperatively washed and pressed the collected
items ready for distribution. CMO NCO immediately
coordinated with the Local Government of Ilagan City thru
the City Mayor, Hon. Jose Marie L. Diaz last November 29,
2013. The City government recommended Sitio Bateng,
Brgy. Alibagu, Ilagan City to be the recipient of the
aforementioned project. This unit checked the status of
the recommended barangay and subsequently agreed to
the recommendation of the City government of Ilagan as
the sitio found to be the most feasible area for the
implementation of the gift giving project without
compromising security. On December 4, 2013, CMO
NCO of this unit conducted coordination with the
barangay chairman of the concerned
sitio, Brgy. Cpt. Alfredo J. Alluad.
Subsequently, on December 6,
2013, CMO NCO was able to have
the list of fifty (50) indigent families
of the sitio to be the recipients.
On December 8, 2013, all available
troops under Cpt. Gamao proceeded to
Sitio Bateng, Brgy. Alibagu, Ilagan
City, Isabela to distribute the gifts
for our less fortunate compatriots.
At about 2:30 p.m., same day, the
unit finally distributed the gifts the second time now, with
a larger number of beneficiaries Fifty (50) families with a
total of Two hundred twenty (220) family members. The
activity started with a simple program with Hon. Alfredo J.
Alluad in his welcome remarks, followed by the message of
1LACT(S) Troop Commander Cpt. Donny Val C. Gamao
(CAV) PA, and subsequently, the distribution of gifts to
recipients. The activity ended successfully at about 4:30
p.m. same day.
The whole activity was a success. Excitement
was very evident not only in every recipient’s eyes but
the whole crowd. Project’s success is determined with
the unending gratitude of every beneficiary of the “Regalo
ni Sarhento” and most of all, the wide smiles that every
indigent recipient uncovers as they had their own chance
to have their share. The activity highlights and advocates
the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Internal Peace and
Security Plan “Bayanihan”. Though how small these
achievements may seem the simple care and help for the
needy is such an essence of service that every Filipino
soldier should possess.
Scorecard…
Significant to Success...
By 2LT KBA
The 2nd Light Armored Cavalry Troop (Separate),
Mechanized Infantry Division, Philippine Army
conducted its Scorecard Workshop last February
7-9, 2014. The core purpose of the said workshop is
to gradually implement and instill to the minds of our
troops the significance of ATR and understand the
importance of individual scorecard to every military
personnel of this unit. The said workshop was attended
by thirteen (13) NCO leaders from the different
detachments for them to disseminate to their
subordinates the importance of these scorecards as a
tool to achieve the army vision “By 2028, A World class
Army that is a source of national pride”.
Headed by our Troop Commander, Cpt. Raul
P. Escat CAV PA, he emphasized the importance of
scorecard as a tool in adapting to changes individually
and as a unit in order to increase competitiveness and
flexibility as well as motivation among us. As part of
the ATR, both personnel and the unit must try to adapt,
survive, perform and influence other people not just
within their section or platoon but to the members of
their family as well. Troop Commander encouraged
each and every one to improve their ability to perform
and excel in every unit’s undertakings. With this, every
personnel must commit to deepen their understanding
of their performance as an individual soldier, as head
of the family and as part of the unit. Completion of the
scorecard does not only determine their objectives
and initiatives but also to have a better grasp of their
individual capacities in order to achieve better results.
The highlight of the said workshop was the
actual completion of the scorecard. Random question
and correction provided an avenue for every attendee
to fully understand and internalize what they have written
on their forms. It encourages them to aim for a better
result but feasible and in accordance to their respective
tasks.
Both officers and senior NCO’s helped the
attendees especially in sentence construction and in
providing examples so that the attendees can fully
understand and express what they want to include in
their respective scorecard. The lively discussion and
mentoring allows the attendees to correct and even
improve their objectives and initiatives as they were
guided properly. But the biggest challenge they have
seen was tying it all the way down to what they do
every day and how it impacts their objectives. As
William Faulkner said, “Do not bother to be better than
your contemporaries or predecessors. Try to be better
than yourself.”
At the end, the attendees are now individually aware
on their duties. They are more committed to strive and
be more responsible as the Philippine Army is now
implementing its transformation that will lead soldiers
to learn their function as leaders and backbone of the
PA organization.
As we have aligned ourselves to the Philippine
Army’s intent, in 2LACT(S), we understand why the
scorecard is indeeds significant to success.

Blood For a Cause...
By: Cpl Wellah Jane C Vera (EW) PA
In connection with the Internal Peace and
Security Plan (IPSP): “Bayanihan”, the 3rd Light
Armored Cavalry (Katapangan) Troops (Separate),
engaged in a Blood Letting Activity on March 21, 2014
at Metro Cotabato Water District (MCWD), Cotabato
City with the theme “Dugo Mo, Buhay Ko.”
2nd Lt. Monina Leynes (CAV) PA, attended
coordinating conference which was spearheaded by
Ms. Leonora D. Gaudiano, the General Manager of
MCWD on February 27, 2014 and finalized the plan
on March 12, 2014. Other stakeholders involved
were Cotabato Regional and Medical Center (CRMC),
Blood Bank Department; Rotary Club of Cotabato;
Alumni Notre Dame of Cotabato for Boys and Girls
Class 83, 88 and 92; Barangay Rosary Heights
4,6,9 and 11 of Cotabato City; Kalipunan ng Liping
Pilipina (KALIPI), Cotabato Chapter; DSWD; Tactical
Operations Group (TOG) 12; 38th Infantry Battalion;
and 23rd Mech Coy, 2nd Mech Bn, Mechanized Infantry
Division.
In order to promote and gain more blood
donors, 3rd LACT(S) led by Cpt. Erwin I. Combate
(CAV) PA, helped in conducting information drive
regarding the activity with a slogan “Every Blood Donor
is a Hero.” On March 4, 2014, the CMO NCO of said
unit posted several campaign materials to increase
the awareness of the populace on the safety and
timely access of blood products and attract more blood
donors.
To qualify as donor, an individual must weigh
at least 110 lbs (50kgs) as blood volume collected will
depend mainly on body weight; pulse rate between 60
and 100 beats per minute with regular rhythm, blood
pressure between 90 to 160 systolic and 60 to 100
diastolic and lastly atleast 125g/L. Proper screening
was conducted to the donors before blood extraction.
As a result, out of two hundred twenty one
(221), one hundred sixty (160) were qualified to undergo
blood extraction. After the activity, all of the
participants were able to accomplish two things. First,
they were able to deposit sufficient blood to CRMC
which can be utilized in emergency situations in the
future. Second, good rapport was established
between the members of the AFP and the stakeholders
in the Area of Operation, thereby gaining support for
the IPSP of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
“We are overwhelmed with the support
that your unit has rendered for the success of this
activity. We are looking forward for future joint
activities with us in order to promote peace in our
place and help those citizens who are in need”
these are the words of Ms. Gaudiano, General
Manager of MCWD, before the activity was culminated.
A soldier’s home away from home
“ARMY = WORST FIELD CONDITIONS”
This is the most common stereotype to which this
branch of service often receives as compared to the
other fraction of soldiers comprising the Armed Forces of the
Philippines. It is but usual that those who joined the
Army easily accept this notion as it is mostly based on
fact rather than fiction. Armor personnel, likewise are
not exempted from this reality.
Together with the other field units within the
army, almost, if not all are suffering from this situation
due to the lack of resources that in effect limits the
level of comfort a typical shelter can give to the soldiers
especially those deployed in the far-flung detachments.
This hard reality may be dealt with indifference by people
in the helm of authority who have less concern over
the welfare of their men or may serve as a challenge
for those who are empathetic and big hearted who,
by all means, will find ways to uplift whatever poor
condition his men are into. The Troop Commander of
4LACT(S), Mechanized Infantry Division, Philippine
Army, Major Edmon M. Bandilla (CAV) PA, has stood
to the challenge and made a leap through the strength
of his vision to embark in a project that would give his
soldiers a “home away from home”.
Apparently, this is a big challenge to his leadership
as it was not a common trend amongst other
commanders, but still he confronted it with boldness,
thus coming up with a “Customized Collapsible Shelter”
for the personnel assigned to the detachments who do
not enjoy permanency but rather displacement from
one location to another according to the deployment
of supported units in the field.
This eye opener came about during his visits
to the detachments under this unit. Along the way,
he saw the situation of his men...soldiers who have
become used to keeping themselves satisfied with
shelters that diminishes pride as a modern soldier and
loses respect from the point of view of the outside world.
With the fabrication of this shelter, the unit
has succeeded in supporting the morale and welfare
of his men as well as contributed to the upliftment
of the image of our Army that continues to struggle
to achieve the 2028 vision of “A world-class Army
that is a source of national pride”. The said project
was also seen and appreciated first hand by no other
than Maj. Gen. Nicanor E. Dolojan AFP, the former
Division Commander of the Mech Div during his
farewell visit last November 27, 2013. This ingenious
structure which only costs lower than Twelve Thousand
Pesos will be comfortable to live in at the same time
portable for the reason that it can be assembled and
dismantled in about thirty (30) minutes since the
parts and joints are detachable for easy mobilization
whenever a change of location will arise and can be
completely transported in a single haul by a KM450.
The imaginative and inventive gesture of
Maj. Bandilla, who, in every way is up to the dare to
surpass the expected leadership method and
approach has proven once more that a collaborative
thought is never undermined as long as there are
people willing to contribute and innovate for the good
of the majority in order to deliver the services not only
to the people within the area of operation but also to
the soldiers who are performers and partners in the
mission to build this nation.

Steadfast ...STEADY… ON!
The 5th Light Armored Cavalry Troop (Separate)
is steadfast on its dedication in achieving the unit’s
mission to provide armor security to the Presidential
Security Group. Not only this, the troops of 5LACT(S)
are composed of highly trained individuals that
provide security operation to no less than the
President of the Republic of the Philippines, H.E.
Benigno Simeon Aquino III and other Heads of
State and dignitaries visiting our country. Almost all
our troops have undergone the VIP Protection Course
that imparts to them the required knowledge and skills
in providing security to the President.
For the first months of 2014, 5LACT(S) was
able to accomplish thirty nine (39) NCR and twenty
one (21) Provincial VIP Security Operations to the
President, First Family and other heads of States.
Some of the notable engagements are with the
opening of the Skyway III Project which was attended
by the President. Also, the visit of His Majesty King
Carl XVI Gustaf, the President of Sweden, where our
troops provided security. Another major engagement that
our troops have participated in was during the signing
of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro
Framework which was signed at the Malacañan
Grounds on March 27, 2014, which is a historic event
paving a way to a peaceful Mindanao.
With all of these workloads, the unit is making
sure of providing our personnel the necessary activities
to boost their morale and welfare. The unit
has convened our EP Promotion board to screen
candidates for promotion to the next higher rank.
Monthly socials such as boodle fights are conducted
to strengthen the camaraderie of our troops. Likewise,
passes and rest and recreation are granted to personnel
of this unit to them time off to unwind and to spend
quality time with their family.
The 5th Light Armored Cavalry Troop
(Separate) will remain dedicated in serving our country
with the highest sense of valor and patriotism. Our men
will continue to uphold the highest standard of the
Mechanized Division as your contingent here at PSG
and we will perform our duty the best way we can.
Steady… On! Armor!
Beyond Humanitarian Aid....
The Philippines is one of the most disaster prone
countries in the whole world because of its high exposure
to natural calamities according to international reports.
This was proven due the phenomenon that hit our
country in the past years. Commonly known are typhoons
Juan in Cagayan Valley in 2010, Sendong in Cagayan De
Oro and Iligan in 2011, Pablo in Cebu and Bohol in 2012
and the recent Super typhoon Yolanda with international
name “Haiyan”. Typhoon Haiyan is one of the deadliest
disaster ever to hit the Philippines.
On the 8th of November 2013, Super typhoon
Yolanda made its onslaught in the islands of Samar,
Leyte, Cebu and Panay where this headquarters is
located. The effect was worse when Storm Surge stroke
some areas of Samar and Leyte where Tacloban City
is situated. Storm Surge is an atmospheric disturbance
manifested in strong winds accompanied by rain and
often by thunder and lightning. Storm surge causes
severe damage to coastal areas. Many are uninformed
or unaware of such that exaggerated the effect in said
areas.
In Panay Island, four hours (4hrs) of strong
wind left a long term devastating effect in the provinces of
Aklan, Capiz and northern part of Iloilo, and snatched
dozens of lives and destroyed millions worth of
properties. Said provinces were almost paralyzed for
several months due to province-wide black out and loss
of signal communication.
6th Light Armored Cavalry (Paghiliugyon) Troop
(Separate) headquarters is one of the Armed Forces of
the Philippines (AFP) units badly affected, not only the
facilities inside camp but also our personnel’s properties
back home to include their respective families.
Despite of the troubles brought by Yolanda and
considering the effect to our personal lives, 6LACT(S)
headed by Maj. Russel V. Mascardo (CAV) PA, Troop
Commander did not waste time to seek aid from different
people’s organization in order to bring hope to the
affected populace in our area of operation (AO). The call
for aid was heard by different stakeholders such as Iloilo
Boy Scout Council, Eagle Scout, Bangon PH, Employees
of M Lhuilier Region 9, Western Visayas State University
and Colegio De La Immaculada Alumni, faculties,
students and parents, and concerned citizens of Pototan,
Iloilo headed by Ms. Jo Villalon, the wife of our comrade
Ssg. Den Villalon of Bagwis Batalion .
Paghiliugyon troopers led by Maj. Mascardo
were tasked to provide and conduct Disaster Relief and
Rescue Operation (DRRO) in northern part of Iloilo
together with other AFP units under 301st Infantry
(Bayanihan) Brigade stationed in Camp Hernandez,
Dingle, Iloilo. They were responsible for the collation
of relief goods intended for the victims and planned for
the orderly delivery in the targeted areas. The unit was
able to conduct eight (8) Humanitarian Assistance and
Disaster Response (HADR) activities thru the provision
of mobility and delivery of goods in Barangay Macalbang
and Tamis-ac, Concepcion; Barangays Daculan, Gogo,
Calapdan and Butongon, Estancia; Brgy. Binon-an,
Batad; Barangay Pili of Ajuy and Barangays Tingui-an
and Balanti-an of Balasan all of Iloilo province. Despite
having a handful of personnel, the 6LACT(S) DRRO
team also provided point security for stakeholders who
participated in the relief operations and ensuring the
smooth flow of distribution in the said municipalities. In
addition, Paghiliugyon troopers see to it that DRRO still
go on even during holiday season where almost half of
the personnel were on yuletide break.
As a result, the unit was able to assist stakeholders
in the delivery of relief goods which benefitted four
thousand four hundred fifty seven (4,457) individuals in
the affected municipalities of Iloilo.
The unit extends its deepest gratitude to all
stakeholders who opened and extended their hands that
made the DRRO operation possible. Said operation
would not be achieved without them. Indeed the spirit of
Paghiliugyon, an Ilonggo word which means “Pagkakaisa”
was shown and felt not only by military by the stakeholders
as well.
Our soldiers’ commitment and passion to help
despite the odds and personal gain is always seen as a
step further... beyond humanitarian aid.

No storm too strong...
No mission too tough...
On November 8, 2013, Super Typhoon Yolanda
devastated portions of Eastern Visayas. It was
considered as the deadliest typhoon that hit the country.
Region 8 suffered the most number of casualties that
reached 5,870 dead, 26,186 injured and reported
missing was placed at 1,005.
The super typhoon tested the Humanitarian
Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR) preparedness
of local government units and agencies to include
that of the 8th Infantry Division. As 8ID troops were
deployed to conduct rescue
and clearing operations in
affected areas on D-day,
incidents of massive looting
took place in the region
specifically in Tacloban City
and the immediate towns of
Palo, Sta. Fe, Tanauan and
Alang-alang (all of Leyte).
Gaisano and Robinsons
malls, warehouses of National
Food Authority (NFA) and
big grocery stores were
ransacked. Fuel stations
were also subjected to looting. Further complicating
the scenario were reports of Red Cross trucks loaded
with relief goods mobbed in Southern Leyte and the
massive break out of inmates in Tacloban City and
Leyte Provincial Jail.
Immediately, additional security forces coming
from the different battalions of 8ID were organized
to beef up the government forces in Tacloban City. A
scout platoon of the 7th Light Armored Cavalry Troop
(Separate) composed of two Simba Fighting Vehicles
(SFV) and two Commando V150s led by Cpt. Leober
V. Samudio Jr (CAV) PA, Troop Commander, were
deployed in those areas as deterrent force to immediately
restore order in Tacloban City, the region’s seat of
government and center of commerce.
The movement of the armored vehicles from
Camp Lukban to TF Yolanda’s Headquarters in
Tacloban City Police Office was impeded by the
outflow of people carrying looted goods, appliances,
etc and one-way lanes of the highway where typhoon
debris remained unclear. It took the scout platoon
eight hours to reach their destination and arrived at
about 11p.m. (Note: Distance from H8ID to Tacloban City
is 107 kms while normal travel time is approximately two
hours and a half).
As the troops settle to rest overnight near
Tacloban City Health Office (southeast portion of the
TF Hqs), gunfires were
heard. The troops were
alarmed that a number
of inmates from the city
jail broke out. From 11:30
p.m. to 3 a.m. the following
day, 7LACT(S) personnel
were able to recapture six
escapees from the said jail
who tried to flee one by
one. These prisoners were
immediately turned
over
to BJMP personnel of

Tacloban City Jail.
The next day, the TF started deploying the
scout platoon to augment the PNP Special Action
Force (SAF) in performing security operations as
checkpoints were set-up and curfew imposed to help
end looting. From thereon, the security situation of the
city improved.
Indeed, the armored assets have greatly
contributed to the immediate restoration of peace and
order in Tacloban City. 7LACT(S) has once again proven
its being MASASARIGAN or reliable living up to the
Mechanized Infantry Division’s motto: “When we are
needed, we will be there and do the job the best way
we can!”
Note: The scout platoon was pulled out from Tacloban
City on January 13, 2014 after nine weeks of continuous
security operations. Government offices, banks and some
commercial establishments have resumed their operations.
Signal Coverage...
Wide and Strong!
The 1st Quarter of CY-14 is again a challenging
but fulfilling time for us. The Signal Company together
with OG6 personnel successfully conducted ICS
Installation & Maintenance Training attended and
participated by Signal personnel from line units in
support to the on-going AV Integrated Communication
System project of the Division. The training aims to
know the capabilities, limitations and characteristics
of the ICS equipment, identify the functions of Power
amplifier, RF amplifier, Intercom boxes and headsets;
know how the proper installations on different AV,
troubleshooting technique and proper maintenance of
equipment and its ancillaries.
As we continue to assemble and build these
ICS and forward them to our line units for installment,
we envision that our troops will be able to accomplish
either admin or combat tasks with the help of proper
communication brought about by ICS. It will be easier
to move and fight if we have excellent communication.
MOVE - SHOOT - COMMUNICATE. These are the
essentials. We will do our part to make this happen.
One of our programs also is to ensure the
serviceability of Central Terminal Office (CTO)
manned by Signal personnel for 24/7 operation. The
Company regularly conducts Telephone line & system
maintenance of the Command that resulted to the
installation of three (3) Telephone extensions, activated one
(1) long local line, trace & repair four (4) dual ports,
replaced one (1) Telephone set; trace, checked & fixed
sixteen (16) Telephone lines of the Command.
Moreover, aside from the routine function of
downloading & uploading communications Division
wide, the Company also participated during Command
activities, CE repair & maintenance that resulted to
one hundred eighty five (185) Public Address System
services, nine (9) dream satellite installation & alignment;
five (5) areal TV antenna alignment and repaired
twenty eight (28) assorted appliances both personal
properties of different organic personnel and properties
of the Command.
Signal Company continues to carry on its support
to the Mechanized Division’s Mission & Vision. Mabuhay!

A Week of Celebrating Holiness
Cpt. John O. Geronimo CHS (PA)
The Holy Week is a traditional practice of
the entire Roman Catholic Church. It celebrates the
Mysteries of Salvation accomplished by Christ in
the last days of his earthly life, from His Messianic
entry into Jerusalem, until His Blessed Passion and
Resurrection.
This year falls on April 13-20, 2014. The Mechanized
Division Chapel headed by the Division Chaplain
participated the Universal Church in the celebration
of the Holy Week. It started with the Palm Sunday
celebration where Community gathered at the Multi
-Purpose Hall for the blessing of the palm leaves. Palm
Sunday celebration reminded the Catholic Christians
for the grandeur entrance of Jesus Christ into His native
place, Jerusalem.
On Holy Monday, there was a recollection at
the Mech Div Chapel. Rev. Fr. Christmar Daguno was
the recollection master. The activity was participated
by the Lay Ministers, Lectors, Commentators, Choir,
Apostles, Officers, Enlisted Personnel and other
Dependents. They appreciated well the topic for the
speaker talked about the liturgy. Liturgy means it is a
public worship rendered to the Father by the
faithful through Jesus Christ. It focused more on
the Holy Mass celebration and the participation of
every minister in the celebration. After the recollection
proper, the division chaplain officiated the sacrament
of confession. And it was concluded with the
concelebrated mass. The recollection master was the
main celebrant and the division chaplain as concelebrant.
On the afternoon of the Holy Tuesday, the
faithful gathered around 3 p.m. at the miraculous chapel
for the station of the cross. The celebration of the station
of the cross reminded the faithful of the events where
Jesus suffered and crucified and even died on the
cross. After which, the division chaplain officiated
the sacrament of confession and many of the faithful
availed. Around 7 p.m. there was a film showing
entitled the Ten Commandments.
On Wednesday
there was station
of
the
cross.
Following
was
recieving some of them the sacrament of confession.
Confession has the main purpose of making available to
the faithful forgiveness of their sins through the priest
as an instrument to represent Christ. This is because
Jesus Christ wants us to be reconciled with the God
after we have offended Him. Around 7 p.m. there was
a film showing entitled the Passion of Christ. Many of
the viewers were very much touched because of what
had happened to Jesus Christ during His passion and
death when he saved mankind.
Then Holy Thursday. The Division Chaplain
attended the Holy Chrism Mass. It was presided by
the Most Reverend Florentino Senense D.D.. He is the
Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Tarlac. The whole
priests of the Archdiocese and religious priests joined
the celebration of the Holy Chrism Mass. The celebration
of the Holy Chrism Mass is very solemn and very
important among priests because during the celebration,
the priests renew their vows for Priestly vocation.
Around 5 p.m., the Division Chaplain celebrated
the mass of the Lord’s Supper. During the washing of
the feet ceremony, Brig. Gen. Mayoralgo M. Dela Cruz,
Our Division Commander helped the Division Chaplain
for washing the feet of the 12 Apostles. Then after the
mass celebration, the procession followed for the
expository of the Blessed Eucharist. It concluded with
the actual reenactment of the actual Last Supper of
Jesus Christ with His 12 Apostles. Then, the vigil of the
different offices continued to the blessed sacrament
until 11p.m.
On Good Friday, the activity started around
11 a.m. for the station of the cross. Then followed by
the 7 Last Words which were uttered by Jesus Christ

HEAT INJURIES...

People take advantage of the warmer temperatures by spending more time outdoors during summer season.
Activities such as traveling for a beach excursion, picnics and mountain climbing occur during summer months.
Sports such as basketball, beach volleyball, tennis, golfing, biking, kayaking and water rafting are some things we
usually enjoy during this season. However, we must also be cautious during extreme heat which could damage our
body. Here are some important tips to remember to prevent heat injuries, weather you’re inside the house or doing
some outdoor activities.
&
Heat Exhaustion: A response to heat characterized by fatigue, weakness, and collapse due to inadequate intake
of water to compensate for loss of fluids through sweating.

E
S
S
Heat Stroke: A response to heat characterized by extremely high body temperature and disturbance of sweating
mechanism. A normal body temperature is around 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, but in heatstroke the body can warm up
to 106 degrees Fahrenheit or higher in 10 to 15 minutes. Death or permanent disability can result from heatstroke
if not treated immediately.
Signs and Symptoms:
- Profuse sweating with pale, cool skin
- Weakness or faintness
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Heat cramps
- Nausea (with or without vomiting)
- Chills (“gooseflesh”) Rapid breathing
- Urge to defecate, tingling in hands or feet
- Lack of normal perspiration
- Skin that is hot, flushed (red) and dry
- Mental Confusion
- Nausea or stomach pains
- Seizures
- Weak and rapid pulse and respiration
- Sudden loss of consciousness
Treatment:
- Move casualty to cool, shaded area
- Normal position for shock
- Loosen clothing and boots
- Pour water over the casualty and fan him/her in order to cool his body faster
- Have casualty slowly drink one quart(one canteen) of cool water.
- Elevate his/her legs.
- Seek medical help if possible.
- If casualty cannot drink water due to nausea or
vomiting, initiate IV and evacuate.
- Monitor the casualty’s breathing. Administer mouth-to-mouth resuscitation if needed
- Evacuate ASAP
yes to whiter teeth!
Step 1: Understand the cause of stained teeth and avoid
it. There are various reasons for stained teeth. However they
could fall under one or the following category. Finding the reason
and stopping the root cause of the problem is the best way to
get started.
Tobacco usage - Smoking or other forms of tobacco intake.
Food habits – Having abnormal amount of coffee, wines, cool drinks etc.
High Fluorides – Excessive intake of fluorides either in the form of drinking water or food.
Alcohol intake – Excessive intake of alcohol.
Genetics – For some people, genetics can also be one of the reasons for stained teeth.
As a person aspiring to know how to get white teeth,
you must analyze your behavior and try to stop the root cause.
Except for genetic reasons all other causes can be reasonably
eradicated.
Step 2: Proper dental hygiene. Adapting to proper dental
hygiene can reduce the nature of yellow teeth to greater extent
over a period of time. One must be aware of how to brush teeth
and to clean tongue properly every day. In addition, these best
practices can lead to a better and healthy life style.
Step 3: Teeth whitening methods. First two steps take
significant amount of time to get results. Typically they take
over 3 to 6 months to achieve remarkable change. However
in certain cases if you are not able to wait for a longer period
or the level of impact is high, you may want to consider teeth
whitening methods after consulting a dentist.
Go Natural: How to get white teeth through natural methods?
Yes, it is indeed possible. Here are some methods:
- Good intake of milk
- Usage of orange pulp
- Usage of strawberry pulp and many more
It is clear that all these natural methods would take
significant time and needs patience. However if you feel it is
not possible it is better to go with artificial methods to get white
teeth. Here are some artificial methods:
- Laser teeth whitening
- Teeth whitening strips
- Teeth whitening gels
- Toothpastes
- Chewing gums and
- Bleaching kits

“There is nothing constant and permanent in
this world except change”. Even the way we address
the needs of the students differ from the previous
years that we hold discussions and now we apply the
new curriculum under the ATR. Likewise we have to
admit that because of modernization, threats increase
and new approaches were introduced to fight these
obstacles. John Dewey, a famous education
proponent once said that, “If we teach today the
way we taught yesterday, we rob them of tomorrow”.
Therefore we have to embrace changes thru student
centered learning and Instructor Development Training
to aspiring models of the school for the instructors to
be more competitive and confident in delivering their
assigned subjects.
Information technology provides the students
with wide range of information thru internet. It is
discovery learning where the students are the one
responsible in assessing and processing information
in order to formulate an outcome and principles based
on their own understanding. Through group activities
and battle simulations along with enough equipment
and facilities, students will work well. The more
involvement the students have in the processing of
learning the greater retention of the knowledge they
acquire. If the students truly analyze the concepts
and principles taught they will be able to apply it on
various situations. Although group activities sometimes
has disadvantages such as students having too much
conversation, some group members not cooperating,
some are not in good terms and oftentimes only the
bright ones manipulate the group and feels they
always has the correct idea, we should understand
that there are several studies which proved that it is
more beneficial to discuss as a group because they
are able to understand the concept and how to use it
rather than memorizing the facts. It is much better if at
the beginning of the class activities, students will be
provided a related topic to the discussion then allows
the students to work on it based on their own
understanding because each individual is unique and
has special ideas in their own way. There are things
that Juan knows but Pedro doesn’t and vice versa.
God created us with different personalities in order to
help and support one another. They only have to respect
each other and become open minded. Students have
to realize the value of working as a team where there
is cooperation, collaboration and trust. The instructor
acting as facilitator will intervene to give explanations
with his observations and recommend better COA’s to
the students. In this way, the instructor and students
are viewed both as learners and instructors. Truly, I
am SSg. Matondo, a training model who believes the
schools do change... for the better!

Team Building Activity
Subic, Zambales
When one goes around the Mechanized Division, we cannot help but see quotes that remind us of the
simplicity of life and our service. One favorite we have is the quote “ All work and no play takes the joy of life
away…”
This applies to both the soldier and their family. The Division places much premium on this because
we know a soldier with a happy family is the one who tends to excel in his work. We recognize the importance
of the balance between work and play…. duty and family that is why this summer season, the Office of the
assistant Chief of Staff for Personnel G1 led by Lt. Col. Charlemagne F. Batayola Jr. crafted, recommended and
implemented the Mech Div Team building activity held at Subic Beach Resort, Zambales last 03 and 10 May
2014. Along with our office mates and troops, dependents and friends, everyone enjoyed a fun filled day of
festive ambiance full of food, drinks and entertainment such as games and live band performances by our very
own combo.

The Mechanized Infantry Division Summer Sports Clinic was conducted from May 12 to 16 2014 by
the Office of the AC of S for Personnel, G1 in coordination with the Division Special Service Office. A total of
thirty-seven (37) dependents of organic personnel joined in the clinic of arnis, swimming and ground navigation.
The clinic was designed for the dependents to have a summer filled with fun and learning as they gain additional
skills in sports and sharpen their minds in solving riddles, familiarizing the terrain around the camp and looking
for the best way to tread. The Ground Navigation facilated by Cpt. Filemon I. Tan Jr. culminated by an “Amazing
Race Challenge” with the dependents running around the camp looking for the designated stations and targets.
Indeed, the Division’s Treasures… our troops and our family…. are well taken care of and their morale
and welfare significantly considered that is why we have activities such as these. Truly, balance of these have a
long lasting impact on our soldiers and their family. We at Mechanized Division, intends it to be this way…. Work,

MECHANIZED
NEWS BITS...
Mechanized troops joins
BALIKATAN 2014
The Philippines and United States of America
Armed Forces recently conducted joint military exercises
under the BALIKATAN 2014. The Army, Navy and Air
Force of both countries trained together and were given
different scenarios to solve and finally execute their
plans on the ground. The 3rd Mechanized Infantry
Battalion joined the exercises along with the troops of
the 20th Infantry Battalion. The planning exercises and
rehearsals made by the troops along with our American
counterparts sharpened the interoperability of both
groups as they learn and understand how to properly
assess, plan for and execute certain maneuvers and
procedures in defending and attacking the enemy. The
Balikatan 2014’s culminating activity in the area was the
Combined Arms Live Fire Exercise (CALFEX) held at
Crow Valley last May 15, 2014. The troops showcased
what they have learned by executing their plans in
actual ground to include the live firing of ammunition
and ordnance. Once again, our 3rd Mechanized Infantry
Battalion gained knowledge and skills from this
exercises which are essential in our operations in
Internal and External Security Operations.
CGPA visits Mech Div ; Joins ZUMBA and
harvest vegetables @ Hardin ng Lunas Mech Div
The Mechanized Infantry Division recently had
some changes in its program for physical fitness.
One of which is the ZUMBA Dance exercise. Soldiers
and dependents dance to the beat of the music while
sweating it out. Personnel dance and sweat it out
during mornings of Tuesdays and Thursdays while
the dependents exercise on the afternoon of Monday,
Wednesday and Fridays. No less than the
Commanding General Philippine Army, along with his
staff experienced to dance with the beat and sweat
it out during his visit last April 8, 2014. Yes, an
alternative to the traditional Army exercise with the
added zest of music which makes you swing your
hips and forget time… after all, here in Mech Div, the
one hour of Zumba dancing burns calories without
you getting bored. Here we burn fat the exciting way.
The second visit of the CGPA Lt. Gen. Iriberri
was during the 01 May Bakal Challenge. After the
said duathlon, CGPA, along with other officers from
several units, were invited by Tarlac Heritage
Foundation Chairwoman Dra. Isa Cojuangco Suntay,
to visit the Mech Div Hardin ng Lunas and harvest
some of its fresh produce. Fresh vegetables such
as Upo, Patola, Talong, Sitao, Sili, Kangkong, Mais,
Papaya and other herbal and medicinal plants were
planted and harvested. Mech Div Hardin ng Lunas
serves as a model for other unit Commanders to see
the importance of a land inside a camp being tilled
and taken care of can place healthy food on the table
and extra income for our soldiers.
The HEAT is on.....
As the Summer Heat continues to rage, so does
the spirit of sportsmanship of the troops of the Mechanized
Division. As such, a two (2) week Summer Sports fest was
organized to foster camaraderie among the troops and different
line units near the Division Headquarters. Several events and
games such as the Tug of war, Tire race, Dodge
Ball, Basketball, Volleyball, etc. were made for the troops to
enjoy while and at the same time, having additional physical
activities for better health. There are five (5) participating
groups; Division Headquarters, Headquarters Support
Battalion, Combined Armor Maintenance Battalion and The
Armor School, 3rd Mechanized Infantry Battalion and Army
Aviation Battalion. As the fire of competition blaze, the
camaraderie of our troops further intensified. In the end, there
where no losers... only winners because troops are happy &
relationships became healthier.

tayong iiwanan...
Una ay si Tinyente ”Ka-Meeting”. May nakapagsabi
pusong BAKAL.... pusong ARMOR…. Matulungin at tapat.

Significant in Basilan
activities along the BCR has given hope to the people as
well as to the soldiers that stability is in the horizon. The
BCR once completely paved will hasten the delivery of
products and crops of the people to bigger markets and
investors to come in for ventures.
It emboldens the hearts of the tankers in Basilan
every time commanders of higher headquarters and
other head of national agencies acknowledged their
significance, sacrifices and contributions to the island.
11LACT leadership is also thankful to higher headquarters
for their support in terms of resources, guidance,
knowledge and skills.
The 1CAV will always stay on the forefront of
the Army efforts in winning the peace in the region as
its Squadron Commander, Lt. Col. Anjo Divinagracia,
emphasized that the unit will secure the communities
while breaking the will to fight of the different threat
groups. The enemy won’t dare fight once they hear the
thundering rolls of the armored vehicles that manifested
the mobility, shock action and firepower of the tankers.

Army Aviation soars HIGHER
has now a total of five (5) mission-ready aircrafts which
will not only boost the operational readiness of the unit
but also enables the unit to extend its aviation related
services to all AFP units and its stakeholders.
Also among the latest in Army Aviation is the
conduct of Basic Aviator Course Class 15 – 2014 wherein
students are being sent to a civilian flying school for their
ground training for them to be able to acquire the latest
and standard knowledge in aviation. The updated and
advance skills that each student will gain allows the unit
to fill-in its inadequacy of modern aircraft systems and
be able to accomplish its mission perfectly the same with
other flying units with modern equipment.
With these improvements of the Army Aviation
Battalion, we are more ready to accept any challenge
that will prove our worth and significance it be it in
internal security operations, counter terrorism or national
development efforts…

A Week of celebrating Holiness

Exactly 5 p.m. the way of the cross was participated
by the officers, enlisted personnel, dependents and
the civilian.
On the eve of the Black Saturday the Miraculous
Medal Community celebrated the Easter vigil. It
began with the blessing of fire, lighting the Paschal
Candle and small candles singing of the Exultet, the
restoration on the festive mood of the celebration of
the Holy Eucharist where the community sang Gloria,
rang the bells, unveiled the Sacred Images, blessing
of the holy water and the faithful and the baptismal
renewal of the community. This celebration tells us
that Jesus Christ has resurrected in which He is truly
God.
In the early morning of Easter Sunday around
3 a.m., the community celebrated the “SALUBONG”.
It is a traditional practice of the Catholic Church. It
is celebrated in the early dawn of Easter Sunday in
which the Blessed Mother and Her Son meet together
and greet with each other. Then they proceeded to the
chapel for the Holy Mass celebration. It was
participated by the Mechanized Division community
and the civilian faithful around the camp.
This Easter celebration dates back to the
historicity of the Catholic Church and this gives joy
and hope for the Catholic Christians the soldiers of
the Mechanized Infantry Division who live and share
the faith a holy week truly honored, cherished and
remembered.

Partners for Peace...

the Anchors of Radio Kalambuan DXNE 94.3 FM Station
headed by Mr. Edwin V. Paypa.
Moriones, San Jose Tarlac with the theme
“PINAGSAMA-SAMANG PROYEKTO PARA SA
MGA TARLAKENYO”.
With the help of the said organizations and
different volunteers mentioned, the 3rd Mechanized
Infantry Battalion created a positive outlook for our
men in uniform. Instead of going to war physique and
attitude, our audacious yet humble soldiers turned
into servant leaders. Instead of carrying firearms,
they used shovels, cement mixers, meter scales to
create the Artesian Well Project intended to give our
benefactors potable water to drink. As the theme goes
during the turnover ceremony of the five (5) artesian
well to the four recipient barangays: “Well for Peace:
Let there be water and there is water” the unit is trying
to give and carry out the immediate and essential desires of our people. Instead of basic load of
ammunitions and explosives, instead they carried
medical and dental kit in order to give the proper treatment
and remedy they deserve. Jungle packs intended to
be loaded seven (7) days ration for combat operation
were replaced with school supplies, drinks, bread and
cookies wholeheartedly transported to far flung areas
and given to the youth in order for them to feel the
charity being extended by our comrades in arms. This
is how the new breed of soldier operates.
The soldiers from the 3rd Mech Inf Bn will never
get tired in doing this cause for they always feel
satisfaction and contentment in their chosen profession
every time they had the chance to help the less
fortunate. It is indeed very fulfilling on the part of
a soldier knowing that he is the very reason why
the people he protects get sound sleep at night;
furthermore, he gets the chance to fuel the hopes and
dreams of those who are less fortunate yet a simple
gesture of generosity for them makes them feel they
are not alone and there are men in uniform willing
to extend a helping hand to alleviate and uplift their
economic condition. As we pledge to be of service to
the people, your army, the “Makatarungans” will always
remain the protector of the state and your companion
and partners in nation building.
The Conduct of the “Adopt a School Library
Project/Feeding Program and Free Haircut” was indeed
a successful “Bayanihan” activity wherein the books
for “Adopt a School Library Project” was successfully
handed-over to Pagayawan Elementary School. The
“Feeding Program” benefited three hundred sixty-two
(362) pupils of PES while the “Free Haircut” benefited
sixty-two (62) pupils of the same school. It showed our
whole hearted devotion to duty and the initiative and
enthusiasm of the SWAG Philippines Incorporated in
helping the soldiers in the field and the government
through “Bayanihan” by addressing part the needs of
some schools in far flung areas especially in the province
of Lanao del Norte to include their desire to have a
School Library. This high impact activity immensely
benefited the pupils of Pagayawan Elementary School
and has helped in winning the hearts and minds not
only of the pupils and the teachers of PES but of the
whole populace in the area.
The collaborative efforts exerted by our troops
under Lt. Col. Hidalgo and the Soldiers Wives and
Girlfriends (SWAG) Philippines Incorporated in
cooperation with the 32IB, 1ID, PA, the LGU of Bacolod,
LDN and DepED Lanao del Norte resulted to a very
significant accomplishment that can be treasured by
the pupils and teachers of Pagayawan Elementary
School. With this endeavor the military, especially the
3rd Cavalry Squadron Troopers, were able to impress
the civilians that the soldiers are good partners in
peace and development especially in promoting education
among the youth.
