SKINCARE NEWS

KNOW YOUR SPF
"Believe it or not... sun exposure
causes most of the skin changes we
think of as the normal part of aging!”
B.Kamins Laboratories.
Always look for a broad spectrum
sunscreen when choosing an SPF for
your face and body. Broad spectrum
will protect you against both ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, the main cause of
sunburn, which are the strongest in
the summer, and ultraviolet A (UVA)
rays, which remain constant throughout the year.
Although less intense than UVB,
UVA rays are up to 50 times more
predominant, and go through glass,
making sun protection necessary
indoors as well as out. Remember B,
burns while A ages. Looking for an
SPF in your moisturizer will help you
stay younger for longer, even if you
are staying out of the sun!
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor
which refers to the theoretical amount
of time that you could stay out in the
sun without protection. An SPF 15,
would protect you
15 times more than
your natural sun
protection. If your
skin would naturally redden after
15 minutes of sun
exposure with an
SPF 15 it would take
225 minutes. SPF
also only applies to
UVB rays not UVA.
To make sure that
you are covered,
look for ingredients such as titanium dioxide or zinc
oxide. These are opaque materials
that reflect light. If applied correctly
these will help to block out UVA rays.
When choosing an SPF for overall
body protection, look for a waterproof SPF 30 and reapply every one to
two hours. SPF can easily be washed
away by sweating during physical
activity or water exposure. You only
need to apply an SPF to the body on
those days when you are outdoors
for an extended amount of time; 20
minutes or more depending on how
fair you are.
A daily SPF 15 should be applied
to the face in your day cream and/
or foundation. This will protect you
throughout the day from regular dayto-day exposure. When spending an
extended amount of time outside,
you should apply your SPF 30 in addition to your regular day protection.
SPF 15 layered with an additional
SPF 30 does not accumulate into an
SPF 45. You are only protected by
the largest number you have applied.
Even an SPF 100 does not mean twice
the protection of SPF 50.
Remember that an SPF 15 sunscreen
blocks over 90 percent of UVB rays,
so you don't need an SPF of 80 or 100
for adequate protection. You would
only choose these higher SPFs if you
have extremely fair skin. This type of
protection is unnecessary for common exposure unless recommended
by a physician. Proper and repeated
application is more important. More
sunscreen simply replaces what has
worn off, it does not start the clock
over.

HEALTH TIPS
COMPUTER ATHLETES
For many people it is almost impossible to get away from the desk at
work. Here are five amazing tips to
help keep your body strong and painfree while stuck at a computer.
1
Engage your muscles.
The reason we become sore
after sitting for a long time is because we are slouching. This causes
a lot of strain on muscles and joints.
Sit with a straight back and your head
over your torso. This will allow your
muscles and bones to work together
to prevent your neck and lower back
from becoming compressed.
6
www.BHBBOTTAWA.ca
2
Do chin tucks.
We tend to lean towards the
computer screen, which causes a
forward head posture.
At the end of your work day, while
keeping your eyes and jaw level,
bring your head back as comfortably
as it will go. Hold and breathe deeply
(not forcefully) for 10-30 seconds.
Repeat this exercise three to five
times, at least once a day, to stretch
the muscles being compressed and
strengthen those responsible for supporting your head.
3
Decompress your spine.
When we sit, our lower back (un
less properly supported) becomes
compressed. This deprives our muscles, joints, and vertebral discs of
nutrients.
To stretch the lumbar muscles and
vertebrae, begin by lying down on
a soft flat surface. Bend your legs as
you bring them up, clasp your hands
behind your knees, and hug them to
your chest. At the same time, bring
your head and your hips off the floor.
Breathe, and hold for 10-30 seconds.
Repeat as needed.
4
Use heat and ice.
Use heat (i.e. hot water bottle, heating pad) for your chronic
low back or neck pain, as heat will
increase blood flow and help relax
your muscles.
Use ice for acute injuries or when
existing ones flare up in order to
remove inflammation and help numb
pain. You can use heat or ice on sites
of pain, depending on what you
respond best to. NEVER use heat on
an area that is already inflamed or
warm to the touch.
5
Get a massage.
No matter how hard we try, we
will at some point develop knots in
our muscles that can become quite
painful if left untreated.
To keep your muscles happy, try
including massage in your healthcare routine. Aside from getting a
massage from a registered massage
therapist, you can exchange massages with your partner, or use a foam
roller to break apart knots and ease
away tension.

COVER STORY
MADE WITH LOVE!
If unique handmade items, flirty petticoats, and 50s
glamour are what you are all about, then prepare to
fall head over heels for this store in New Edinburgh. Think indie!
www.BHBBOTTAWA.ca

When you think of handmade it is easy
to conjure up the idea of romance.
Think burlap, lace, tulle... the list goes
on. The Handmade Bride, located in
New Edinburgh, is a dream come true
for the indie bride-to-be and handmade lovers alike.
Above: Meaghan Brunetti, owner of
The Handmade Bride.
Meaghan Brunetti, who lives in
Cantley, Quebec, with her four children and husband, was inspired by
her own big day to open The Handmade Bride. "I opened The Handmade Bride to fill a gap for modern
brides in Ottawa. When I got married
in 2011, I had a hard time finding
items I liked locally," says Meaghan.
She continues: "Everything seemed
so traditional and boring. The concept
was born, combining really awesome
wedding stuff with ethically sourced
and made products."
When you step in to the boutique,
you are welcomed by unique dresses and whimsical products that will
excite the bride-to-be in any woman.
Dresses range from classic white, to
almond, to black and white, to the
more adventurous polka dot and pink
petticoats.

There is something for
everyone. If you are a oneof-a-kind bride then this is
a must-see stop on your
bridal map.
"The Handmade Bride is
really unique because its
the only shop of its kind in
the world. It offers modern
brides a casual, fun place to
shop for their dress while
guaranteeing that everything in the shop is made
sustainably and with love."
Meaghan adds: "We
focus on creating a low
pressure sales environment
where brides-to-be can be
themselves and hang out
with their friends and family
while finding their dress."
What's next for the indie
wedding store? Meaghan
says: "The Handmade Bride
is the love of my life (after
my husband and children of
course). I want to continue
sourcing amazing products
for my clients and be able
to accommodate the growing number of brides flocking to the shop every week!
We have already outgrown
our sweet little spot in New
Edinburgh and are starting
to look into new fantastic
venues to host The Handmade Bride."

TOP THINGS TO THINK
ABOUT FOR BRIDES-TO-BE
1. Write some vows to yourself when you get
engaged and follow them throughout your
entire wedding planning process.
2. You can be yourself! No need to fit into the
strict parameters set by the wedding industry.
3. Keep it sweet, simple and authentic.

4. Wedding planners are worth it, seriously,
look into it. They can add to your DIY plans.
5. If you don't know where to start, look for the
venue and the dress first. They will help set the
date and vision for your day.
