Surfing
Porthcawl, Sandy Bay
If you want to surf, there is nowhere better than along
the Glamorgan Heritage Coast & Countryside and its
the closest surf area to Cardiff, Wales’ capital city, saving
you hours of travelling time!
Once here you can take full advantage of the restless waves
lashing against the rocks and crashing on the golden beaches,
as you ride the waves on another warm breezy summer day.
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of pitting your surf skills
against the mighty sea.
The sea has always had a strange almost hypnotic attraction.
Some say it even has a humbling effect on them. There is no
doubt that it certainly has an invigorating effect; always
changing and always breathtakingly beautiful.
If you have never dared try surfing, but would like to, then there
is surf tuition available, provided by specialist water sports
companies. And then of course there is the ‘Apres Surf’. Our
coast and its coastal culture is something well worth experiencing.
There is no doubt about it the Glamorgan Heritage Cost is a
surfer’s paradise with beaches to suit all abilities. Take a look
at the following list and choose the beach that will give you
the very best of times!
4
Surfing
A beautiful flat sandy bay sheltered by the towns harbour. It is
very popular for families and day visitors during the summer
season so surfers need to take extra care.
Porthcawl, Rest Bay
Popular with surfers, Rest Bay faces south west, so the ocean
swells produce a fine surf for board riders. This beach offers
wanna be surfers the ideal opportunity - with Instructors and
surf board hire available. But if you're after something a little
less energetic, the firm, golden sands that sweep up to a
rocky shoreline backed by acres of common land offers the
perfect place to relax. A European Blue Flag Beach.
Porthcawl, Trecco Bay
This well sheltered sandy and rocky beach is non
commercialised and close enough for a stroll to the town
centre of the popular seaside resort of Porthcawl. The beach
is part of a holiday park with access to the public, which has
excellent facilities for all the family. A European Blue Flag
Beach.

Horse Riding
Whether you are an experienced rider or just an enthusiastic
trainee, the countryside around our area of Southern Wales
is ideal for either, especially when you consider the many
riding centres throughout the area.
In the hills or on the coast, there is so much natural beauty
to see and where better to see it than from the saddle of a
horse along a quiet bridle way?
There may be many other areas to ride, but you won’t find
anywhere so compact as The Glamorgan Heritage Coast &

Walking
Walking is not only an excellent form of exercise but can
also be a relaxing and rewarding experience, especially along
The Glamorgan Heritage Coast & Countryside, as there are
so many areas to explore that can only be reached by foot
or cycle.
There are also dozens of local community routes that have
shops and inns along the way, so you can make a full day of it.
Whether you are an established hiker, or just an enthusiastic
’stroller’ our coast has something to suit you.
Some of our routes can be quite long, so don’t forget your
map and compass and a mobile phone might be quite useful.
Don’t forget to leave your contact details with someone.

There’s a whole world of things to see
and do for visitors to the Glamorgan
Heritage Coast & Countryside, a
compact, beautiful area of a spectacular
country. This may surprise the many who
still feel it is dominated by industry. On
the contrary, it is an area of dramatic
cliffs and award winning sandy beaches.
Test the waves on a surf board or learn to scuba
dive with professional trainers. Take a charter
vessel out to sea and challenge the elements while
fishing or just stroll along the spectacular cliffs
overlooking the shimmering waves.
It’s an environmentalist’s dream come true with
specially designated walking and cycling paths
through areas that are abundant with natural
interest. Every turn of a corner produces yet more
fascinating scenes. Old industrial sites have been
taken back by nature, and now beautifully blend in
with the countryside, while still maintaining their
historical interest.
