TASMAN DISTRICT
Proudly brought to you by Tasman District Council.
Supporting our region’s communities and their interests
Summer is here, and there is no better
place to be than Tasman District.
Whether you love the beach, back country tramping, gigs, theatre,
sport, sampling local food and drink or just browsing around a market
you will find something to bring a smile to your face in our wonderful
District this summer.
To make sure you don’t miss out on the many events that are taking
place we have created this comprehensive Summer Event Guide.
As well as the higher profile events we have also included all of the
smaller ones that often only locals get to hear about. These smaller
community events really bring Tasman to life, and emphasise the
community spirit and passion that makes Tasman District so special.
If you are a visitor to our beautiful District I would like to extend
the warmest welcome to you. There is a lot to like about Tasman,
and even more to love about it!
Abel Tasman, New Zealand’s smallest National Park, is probably our
most famous landmark and one that you will no doubt be visiting
over the summer. Its world-renowned beaches, mixed with pockets
of pristine native bush, make it somewhere you won’t want to leave.
Kahurangi, situated at the heart of Tasman, is our country’s newest
and second largest National Park. It has rugged beauty and alpine
scenery to match anywhere in the world. Another alpine treasure
is Nelson Lakes National Park.
Tasman District is home to the deepest southern hemisphere caving
system, the clear waters of the cultural icon Te Waikoropupu Springs
and the ‘not to be missed’, World Heritage listed, sand dunes of
Farewell Spit.
Nestled within all this natural beauty are 17 settlements – each with
its own unique character and appeal. Murchison, Tapawera and
Takaka are the home to vibrant communities and a rich tapestry
of attractions. Richmond, Motueka and Mapua have enough boutique
retail outlets to keep the most hardened shopper happy.
Have a great stay – be safe, considerate
and have fun. We’re glad you came!

INFORMATION
AREA GUIDE
GOLDEN BAY
MOTUEKA
The dramatic karst landscape
at the top of the Takaka Hill
has the power to transport you
to another world. Remarkable
land and seascapes create
the character of Golden Bay
in colours of apple to emerald
green, bright gold to icy blue.
The community is equally
colourful, with a strong Maori
heritage and a past filled
with gold-fevered settlers
and rugged farmers.
Set between river valleys and
the region’s famous beaches,
Motueka is a town rich in settler
history and indigenous culture.
Te Awhina Marae close to town
provides a cultural hub for local
Maori and the wider community.
Glimpses of days gone by
can be seen in Golden Bay’s
museum and the historic
graveyards of Clifton and
Collingwood. Golden Bay’s
stunning geographic features
can be seen in Kahurangi
National Park, Farewell Spit, the
Te Waikoropupu Springs and the
Takaka Hill cave system. Golden
Bay is also renowned for highenergy creative and cultural
events, summer on the beaches
and the interesting townships of
Takaka and Collingwood.
Motueka is the gateway to
the Abel Tasman National
Park. From here you can also
reach special places like the
source of the Riwaka River, Mt
Arthur, the Motueka River and
Kaiteriteri Beach. Once known
as the “tobacco town”, Motueka
now has greater horticultural
diversity, and is home to a large
number of cottage and craft
industries.
Tasman District Summer Event Guide 2014/2015
MAPUA/
MOUTERE
Our region is famed for
sunshine, sand, vineyards,
picturesque countryside and
artists’ studios – you’ll find
them all on the Ruby Coast and
Moutere Hills, in villages where
the vibe is relaxed and where
people have time to talk. Visit
the cafés and boutiques
of the lovely seaside villages
of Mapua, Ruby Bay, Tasman
and Kina.
Find vineyards, orchards,
galleries and rural villages in
settings rich in heritage. The
coastline near Mapua has
become a highly sought-after
residential area. Golden sand
gives way to the stony shore,
which changes colour with
every lick of the tide at Ruby
Bay. Catch the ferry from Mapua
across to the beaches and cycle
trails of Rabbit Island.
RICHMOND
WAIMEA
Tasman District’s biggest town,
Richmond, was once a major
commuter port, connecting
the productive lands of early
Tasman to the markets of
Nelson City. Tasman District
Council has its headquarters
in Richmond and each year
the main regional Nelson
Agricultural & Pastoral Show
is held here.
From Wakefield to Richmond,
the Waimea Plains fan out to
the edge of Tasman Bay and
the foot of the Moutere Hills.
The area’s rich bounty comes
from market gardening, dairying,
apples, sheep and beef.
It is also a favoured area for
nurseries, vineyards and art and
craft galleries. The area is fast
becoming one of New Zealand’s
leading wine growing areas.
Richmond is now emerging as
a major retail and commercial
centre in its own right, with
the advantage of free parking
(time limited) and an excellent
modern mall that fronts on to
the main street. The new town
centre, Sundial Square, provides
a refuge in the midst of the
town, with sculpture, seating
and grassed areas.
Those in search of a summer
splash will find plenty of freshwater options in the rivers
running through the Wairoa and
Aniseed Valleys. If it’s the beach
you want, they don’t come
much bigger than the sevenkilometre stretch of Rabbit
Island (Moturoa). This fabulous
beach offers safe swimming
as well as picnic and barbeque
spots among shady pine trees.
LAKES/
MURCHISON/
TAPAWERA
From Tapawera to St Arnaud,
Frog Flat to Murchison, the
landscape of this largely rural
area is raw and dramatic. Fields,
forests, farms, rivers, mountains
and valleys are interrupted
by small settlements, country
pubs and craft galleries. It is the
isolation of southern Tasman
that is attracting more and more
domestic and overseas visitors,
lured by its reputation for great
trout fishing and back country
hunting.
The power of nature is equally
alluring. Rafting and kayaking
enthusiasts flock to the area
every year to challenge the
swift-flowing Buller River.
As Tasman s southernmost
town, Murchison is a centre
for adventure tourism with
businesses geared to visitor
enjoyment. The town’s historic
buildings and a great little
museum add to the area’s
appeal.

Little Women (1949, G, 122mins). There have been many film adaptations
of Louisa May Alcott’s novel, Little Women, but this 1949 adaptation is
the most powerful. At times both funny and poignant, the film follows the
March sisters – Jo (June Allyson), Beth (Margaret O’Brien), Amy (Elizabeth
Taylor) and Meg (Janet Leigh) - as they grow up and learn some important
life lessons. Pack a picnic (BYO weclome), bring a rug or your couch, wear
warm clothes or pyjamas and pocket a torch to light your way home.

Captain Blood (1935, PG,
119mins). One of Errol Flynn’s
crowning achievements, Captain
Blood is among the best that the
pirate genre has created. Dr Peter
Blood (Flynn), a man unjustly
convicted of treason, is exiled
to Port Royal, sold into slavery
and bought by the lovely Lady
Arabella (Olivia de Havilland).
He and fellow convicts manage
to escape and take over a
Spanish galleon, and thus the
pirate Captain Blood is born.
Pack a picnic (BYO weclome),
bring a rug or your couch, wear
warm clothes or pyjamas and
