with our current products and expanding more exciting new items.
Many of the plants we offer have been traditionally propagated by
budding, grafting, or cuttings but we are confident that you will
find that the advantages of our liners through tissue culture to be
superior to the other standard methods. More and more custom
propagation services have been added to fit many of our customers’
needs. Please do not hesitate to contact us for specifics on what we
can do for you.
Our fruit section has been significantly expended the last few
years. We offer many fruit crops in our production lines, such as:
blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, and pomegranates and we
continue to add more varieties for each type of fruit. Choices of fruit
tree rootstocks including pears, apples, peaches, almonds, plums,
apricots, walnuts, and pistachios have also been increased. These are
all listed in our Fruit Tree Brochure. We understand that many of our
ornamental customers have added or increased their production on
fruit trees for the growing home garden market. Please contact us if
you are interested in any of the fruits, nuts, or fruit tree rootstocks.
Again, we sincerely thank you for your interest in our products.

About Our Company and Products
North American Plants, LLC serves the wholesale
nursery trade in the capacity of a propagator of woody
ornamentals, rootstocks and nut and berry varieties. We
employ in vitro micropropagation (tissue culture) in our
on-site laboratory as the exclusive means of propagation.
The plants we produce thereby are then acclimatized to
ambient conditions and grown-on to transplantable size
that starting plants in paper plug systems, such as the
Ellepot® results in higher quality, more easily handled
transplants as compared to plant materials grown or rooted
in common flats or standard cell packs/small pots.
We make our own paper plugs at North American Plants
Starter plant grown in
paper plug, easy to transplant!
Our transfer room
in our signature paper-plug format for your convenience.
Because of our unique combination of laboratory and
greenhouse facilities, we can both propagate as well
as establish high quality micropropagated starter plants
completely in-house. This means that we do not sell any
materials that are still in vitro, such as stage II or III plantlets.
Instead, we offer only fully-established transplants or liners
that are ready to transplant right away. So our customers
do not need high humidity tenting setups or specially
designed environments to succeed with our materials.
How We Grow Our Plants: All of our plants are initially
planted out of the laboratory in paper plugs. We believe
Our culture room
(see picture of our machine below). This allows us to vary
the components of the substrate from crop to crop to fit
the exacting root-zone and fertility requirements for each
variety. In our paper plugs, we use the same peat-based
substrates that most growers use for softwood cuttings or
micropropagated materials. But there is one very important
difference: the root system of a paper plug is supported on
the sides by a non-woven fabric “paper.” North American
Plants was the first propagator in North America to utilize
this technology in the production of tissue cultured woody
plants. We think that you will be impressed by the speedy
transplanting and establishment of our small and large size
products that are grown in this system as compared to bareroot, or cell-pack grown, starter plants.

Our Size Formats: We offer three size formats for different applications. Small and Medium plugs are our standard product
formats, whereas Large size transplants are normally produced on a custom basis. We direct-stick the plants in the Small and
Medium plugs, but Large size transplants are produced by planting Small paper plugs and later transplanting them, after a root
prune, to 21/4” Landmark 32 pots. These three size formats are described in further detail here.
Small (144 plants/flat)
This is our smallest and most economically-priced transplant.
Small transplants are grown in 3/4” wide by 11/2” deep
paper plugs. Transplants grown in this soil volume are
normally shipped when one to three inches tall. Small
transplants are best used for transplanting into smaller
containers (less than one gallon) or tree bands. This is our
most popular size format.
Medium (50 plants/flat)
Our Medium-size transplants are grown in 11/2” wide by 2”
deep paper plugs. Plants grown in this soil volume typically
attain between 6 and 12” in height, at which point they
may be shipped. (note: heights may be less than this range
for certain shrub varieties). The Medium size format makes a
great transplant into containers under 5 gallons. Also, with
care and some pre-hardening, medium transplants can even
be lined-out directly in the field. We can place your order
outside for one or two weeks prior to shipment to harden
them for field planting if you so request.
Large (32 plants/flat)
This item costs $0.20 more per plant than the
corresponding Medium price. Our Large liners are initially
established in paper plugs and are then later transplanted
and grown-on in 21/4” by 3” containers. We remove any
circling roots from the plug base that may be present at the
time of this transplanting. Large liners are normally grown
on a custom basis, please allow up to a year lead time.
Notwithstanding the foregoing, we do occasionally have
unallocated inventory in this size, so please do not hesitate
to call us for availability of materials in this premium size.
The best application for our Large liners is for lining-out in
the field or for transplanting directly to larger containers.
Important Note About Paper Plugs: As with any containerized growing system, root systems are artificially restricted by the
“walls” of the container. In the case of paper plugs, this is also true. We recommend inspecting the root systems of the paper
plugs you receive for any circling or upturned roots (which could result in a small “J” root) and take remedial action prior to
transplanting in order to avoid later root quality issues in bare-root production.

How to determine prices: The actual price for a given
product depends on the quantity ordered and the size format selected. Therefore, to determine your price first find the
corresponding quantity rate column, then the corresponding
row for size format.
pricing example (red sunset® maple)
Quantity:
Small (144/flat)
Medium (50/flat)
Royalty = $0.65/plant

So, for example, if you wish to purchase 6,000 Small Red
Sunset® red maple transplants, your price would be in the
“Small (144/flat)” row, under the “5,000+” column = $1.18
each.
Or, if you want to buy 4,000 Medium Red Sunset® red
maple transplants, then your price would be in the “Medium
(50/flat)” row, under the “1,000+” column = $1.53 each.
Remember, if Large size (21/4” pot) is desired, then you must
add $0.20 to the corresponding quantity rate prices listed in
the “Medium” row. Please allow a 9 to 12 month lead time
for “Large” materials.
Royalty rates (where applicable) are listed with the
prices for each entry. Please note: royalties are in
addition to (never included in) the listed price.
Our Variety Offerings
In the following pages we list the ornamental plants
that we shall be producing during the next twelve
months. Prices listed here become effective on 1
August 2009 and supercede any pricelists, catalog
or offerings made before this date. The prices or
royalty rates listed herein may be modified at any
time, be sure to double check current pricing at the
time you place your order. All materials listed herein
are offered subject to availability.
In perusing our Ornamentals Catalog you may notice
some varieties not offered anywhere else on their
own roots. Certain others may be available from other
propagators on their own roots, but not necessarily
with the benefit of tissue culture propagation or
the benefit of having been grown in our convenient
paper plug format. So, when shopping for transplants
or liners, please consider the quality benefits derived
from our special production system. We believe
(and are sure you’ll agree) that the increased vigor,
uniformity, and tightly-packed basal buds of our in vitro
propagated transplants will more than compensate any
difference in price of our transplants as compared to
cutting-propagated liners offered elsewhere.
Additional Information: For information on ordering,
shipping, terms of business, and other important notices,
please see pages 28-30, following the variety descriptions.

autumn blaze® maple
Acer x freemanii ‘Jeffersred’
This highly popular maple is a demonstrated
winner across the continent. In fact, it was
chosen 1997 tree of the year by the Iowa Nursery and
Landscape Association. It attains a height of approximately
50’ with an oval crown spread of about 40’. Its A.
saccharinum parent confers vigor and a better adaptation to
droughty sites than cultivars derived from straight A.
rubrum. It also stands up well to heavy soils and the potato
leafhopper. Regarding climate adaptation, it has performed
well in many places, even as far south as USDA zone 8. Of
course the primary benefit of this wonderful tree is its
consistent, brilliant and long lasting fall colors of red and
orange, making it very aptly named. Hardiness to USDA
zone 4, possibly 3.

autumn fantasy® red silver maple
Acer x freemanii ‘DTR 102’ PP7655
Celebration® Freeman Maple
Acer x freemanii
(FREEMAn OR RED SILVER MAPLES)
This group of hybrid maples brings together the best of both
worlds: the good habit, fall color and hard wood of the reds
(A. rubrum) but with the vigor and stress tolerance of the
silvers (A. saccharinum). Like red maples, freemans can also
be propagated a number of ways, but we encourage you to
consider the benefits of in vitro-propagated liners and transplants over cutting-grown materials. For further discussion
about those benefits, please see the red maple section.
Acer x freemanii ‘Armstrong’
An old favorite: upright, almost fastigiate growth habit.
Armstrong trees have attained over 50’ in height with only
a 15’ crown width. Fall coloration can be a nice yelloworange-red, but only under ideal soil and climate conditions
(which conditions are normally encountered in the north).
It grows vigorously both in the north and the south but
in the southern tier states fall coloration can be less than
spectacular. Female clone, adapted to USDA zones 4
through 7.

This tree is creating quite a stir in the Green
Industry! Autumn Fantasy® is a fast
growing, full-crowned tree with the ability
to withstand adverse growing conditions. The fall color is an
annual October feature, persisting until the first hard frost.
The impressive annual display becomes outstanding because
the heavy leaf population turns an intense ruby-red almost
simultaneously. Autumn Fantasy® will attain a height and
spread of 45’ and 40’ within 30 years and is adapted from
USDA zones 4/5 to 8.

Acer x freemanii ‘Celzam’ PP7279
This seedless freeman maple is
gaining popularity because of
its excellent attributes. The
form of the plant is distinct in that it is upright/pyramidal and
relatively compact. It naturally forms good crotch angles to
hold up well under heavy snow loads. It grows vigorously at
first, then more moderately, ultimately reaching 45 to 50’ in
height with a crown diameter of 20 to 25’. Celebration® has
shown good drought tolerance in Ohio. Fall color begins
relatively early with red giving way to golden hues, depending
on local conditions. This well-behaved freeman maple is also
a male clone and its hardiness is to USDA zone 4.

firefall™ freeman maple
Acer x freemanii ‘AF#1’ PP15,593
Resulting from a controlled cross of a cutleaf form of
silver maple (Beebe cultivar) and Autumn Spire red maple,
this new male (seedless) freeman maple from Minnesota
represents a new addition to the lineup of hardy maples.
Firefall™ has a symmetrical oval form with branches that
grow at approximately 40° angles relative to the leader.
It can reach 50’ in height with a 30 to 40’ crown width.
The foliage is somewhat cut and develops excellent red fall
color. Like other freeman maples, this tree is vigorous but
it hardens off earlier in the fall than other freeman maples.
Adapted to USDA zones 3 to 6.

Red Sunset® Maple (page 8)
marmo freeman maple
Acer x freemanii ‘Marmo’
Acer rubrum
Selected in Lisle, IL at the Morton
Arboretum, the unusual name of this
variety is derived from Margaret Morton, in whose honor it
was named. This variety has withstood the rigors of northern
Illinois winters and has performed better in heavy clay soils
than most red maple cultivars. Marmo grows vigorously but
has a good upright habit, nice strong branching structure
and a strong central leader. Fall color seen on Marmo trees in
northern Illinois varies from site to site and year to year, but
is generally an interesting mix of red and green, as well as
burgundy, yellow and gold hues. The parent tree, which is
now over 75 years old, has attained 70’ in height by 35’ in
diameter. This tree can be grown from USDA zones 3 to 8.

Acer rubrum
Selected from a cross of October Glory®
and Red Sunset®, this maple stood out
for its consistent and early fall color, which is described as
an excellent orange/red. The crown of Autumn Radiance® is
essentially round in outline with good natural branching
structure. This variety can attain heights over 50’ with up to
a 40’ spread. Best adapted in USDA zones 4 to 7.
Acer x freemanii ‘Sienna’ PP11,322
Sienna Glen® has a very uniform branching habit that
naturally makes an attractive pyramidal form and is thus
highly recommended for planting along boulevards and
highways for its consistent beauty. Besides excellent form,
the rich green of the summer foliage gives way to a good
orange/red fall color. Its hybrid origin confers to Sienna
Glen® adaptability to a wide variety of soil conditions as
well as fast growth. But luckily, Sienna Glen®’s vigor does
not come at the expense of good form or strength against
wind breakage! Because of its superior hardiness, Sienna
Glen® shows high resistance to frost crackling/sunscald.
Sienna Glen® is recommended from USDA zones 3 to 6.

This important shade tree species scarcely needs
introduction. Although they can be successfully budded in
many cases, most growers have abandoned that practice in
favor of own-rooted plants due to delayed incompatibility
risks. Own-rooted red maple liners are now mostly produced
by softwood cuttings or by tissue culture. Tissue cultureproduced red maples are preferred by quality-conscious
growers around the country for reasons which include: well
branched/distributed roots, good and uniform vigor, no
doglegs (typical in rooted cuttings), and the large number
of buds at the base of the stem. So, when shopping for
red maple liners, consider these advantages as compared to
those occasionally less-expensive cutting-grown materials.
Our vigorous micropropagated transplants will get you a
quick stand of liners every time.

autumn spire red maple
burgundy belle® red maple
Acer rubrum ‘Autumn Spire’ PP7803
Acer rubrum ‘Magnificent Magenta’ PP7222
Autumn Spire is a broadly columnar to upright growing red
maple selected in Minnesota. Because of its above-average
hardiness, this is one of the best choices for situations
where an upright maple is desired in a cold climate. Fall
color is a good, consistent red and as an added bonus
the spring flowers (which are bright red and occur before
leafing out) are so profuse and bright, they are ornamentally
effective. Autumn Spire is a male clone and is therefore
fruitless. Ultimate height 50’ with a 20 to 25’ spread.
Adapted to USDA zones 3 to 6.
Burgundy Belle® is a new red maple selected by the late Melvin Schmidt in northeast
Kansas. The parent tree has attained a
height of 45’ and has a compact, wellshaped, symmetrical crown. These traits make this variety a
superior tree for street planting or for landscaping in small
urban settings. Summer foliage is a medium to dark green.
In autumn, the leaves turn to a vibrant, almost fluorescent,
burgundy red that glows in the autumn sunlight and holds
for a long period of time. Several days before leaf drop, the
color changes from burgundy to scarlet. Burgundy Belle® is
heat resistant, drought tolerant, and has withstood temperatures to -32º F without damage. Burgundy Belle® branches
to perfection in the nursery row, giving a high percentage of
premium quality grades. This trait makes it an ideal small tree
for garden center sales. Vigor is somewhat lower than most
red maples. Hardiness to USDA zone 5.

bowhall red maple
Acer rubrum ‘Bowhall’
Bowhall is a beautiful red maple whose narrowly pyramidal
upright crown displays perfect symmetry. It is ultimately
wider than Armstrong but not as tall. Bowhall is a wonderful
variety and is definitely in demand, but its growth rate in the
nursery can be classified as “lower than average.” Fall color
is yellow to red, depending on conditions. Eventual height is
40 to 45’ by 15’ wide. Hardiness to USDA zone 4.

brandywine red maple
Acer rubrum ‘Brandywine’
This potato leafhopper-resistant cultivar was
released from the U.S. National Arboretum
breeding program in 1994. It is distinguished by having an
oval habit and moderate size (25’ tall by 12’ wide in 12
years). Fall color lasts over a long period (two weeks): it
starts out red and finishes brilliant purple/red. Its color peak
is later than most other red maples, but still earlier than
October Glory®. Widely adapted, it has performed well
from Georgia to Michigan. Brandywine may prove to be
among the best choices for planting along streets and in
residential settings. Being a male clone, production of seed
will not be a concern. Hardiness to USDA zone 4

Acer rubrum
This is a great columnar maple that is
gaining in popularity. It was originally
selected in New York state for its narrow upright habit that
becomes more oval with age. It has noticeably red twigs
that contrast nicely with its dark green foliage. Its
dimensions are perfect for urban landscape settings,
ultimately attaining 35 to 40’ in height and 15 to 20’ in
diameter. Fall color is yellow to red and as an added bonus
it is a male clone! Hardy to USDA zone 4.

new world red maple
Acer rubrum ‘New World’
New World was selected for excellent potato

unusual for a red maple, that the mature tree resembles a
small upright American Elm in structure. This combination of
characteristics make it a very good choice for urban areas,
especially in the Northern States. The ultimate height should
be between 30 to 35’ with a spread of about 1/2 the height.
New World is a male clone hardy to USDA zone 4.

northwood red maple
Acer rubrum ‘Northwood’
One of the hardiest, if not the most hardy, named red
maple cultivar. Northwood was selected from a seed source
in Northern Minnesota, at the Northwestern limit of this
species’ range. Northwood is a grower-friendly tree, with
a naturally straight trunk, vigorous growth and appealing
branching structure. The fall color can be a nice orange/red
if the conditions are right. It is a male clone (seedless). Best
adapted from USDA zones 3 to 6 or 7.

Acer rubrum
This is the latest of the red maple cultivars to color in the
fall, and the color also lasts longer, often retaining its brilliant

a beautiful tree that consistently performs well in many areas,
including the southern states, which is probably why it is so
often used as a parent in red maple breeding. Its ultimate
height tops out between 50 and 60’ with an essentially ovaterounded habit. Female clone, hardiness to USDA zone 5.

This is our most intriguing red maple variety!
We say this because we have found the need to modify the
description every time we do a catalogue, as each year we
learn something new and unexpected about it. This US
National Arboretum release is probably one of the hardiest
red maples to cold, coming from a northern Minnesota seed
source. Its combination of reduced size and tight upright
habit coupled with heavy red pigmentation (both in new
shoot tips as well as in autumn foliage) make it a compelling
choice for many landscape situations, especially in smaller
gardens or urban settings. Now, given that it is from such a
cool area as northern Minnesota, we always supposed that it
would be happiest growing in northern areas and places like
Oregon. Conversely, we previously indicated that it would
not be recommendable in hot summer areas like the South.
Over time, it has become apparent that this tree performs
very well in the South. Here in Oregon, which has a summer
climate more similar to Minnesota’s than that of Tennessee, it
seems to lack vigor and uniformity. One thing that has not
changed, is the high esteem in which we hold this very
beautiful red maple variety.

Named in honor of its discoverer; this beautiful Snakebark
maple sports pure alabaster white bark in midwinter. This
variety is considered by many snakebark connoisseurs to be
the best of the white stem selections. Snakebark maples
are somewhat difficult to grow; for success with this plant
one needs to provide good drainage, but with adequate
fertility and irrigation. The species can reach heights of 30’,
but in most situations this selection should top out between
10 and 15’. Due to its oversize leaves, it seems best suited
to partial shade, especially in warmer zones. Adapted to
USDA zones 4 or 5 to 7 or 8.

This is the famous coral-bark Japanese maple, popular for
its stunning bright coral-red bark in the winter. Although
Sango Kaku is traditionally grown as a single-trunked
specimen tree, we may suggest that some new possibilities
are opened-up by having it on its own roots: One possibility
could be to grow multi-stemmed Sango Kaku trees,
or perhaps a shrub-form Sango Kaku that is renewed
periodically by cutting them back to the ground, like Cornus
sericea cultivars (just imagine clumps of hot coral-pink stems
planted en masse, what a sight!). If left to its own devices,
this variety should attain 25’ in height with a spread of
about 20’ with a vase-shaped habit. Fall color is also a fairly
nice yellow gold. Adapted to USDA zones 6 to 8

Acer rubrum ‘Sun Valley’
Sun Valley is another great variety from the U.S.
National Arboretum breeding program, selected
for its potato leafhopper resistance and beautiful fall color.
One of the easiest red maples in the nursery row, it is
vigorous and develops well-formed finished trees naturally. In
the landscape, it possesses a symmetrical ovate crown and
has attained a height and width of 21’ and 10’, respectively,
in ten years. Although it is relatively late to color in the fall
(peaking about one week before October Glory®) it is more
than worth the wait. The stunning fluorescent orange-red
color lasts about two weeks. Sun Valley is our favorite red
maple for fall color: in our greenhouse the Sun Valley blocks
really stand out in fall. Male clone, hardiness to USDA zone 4.

Amelanchier species
(SERVICEBERRIES)
Members of the genus Amelanchier go by many names:
we’ve seen them listed as Serviceberries, Sarvisberries,
Shadblows, Juneberries, or Saskatoons depending on
the species and the context. To make matters worse, the
taxonomy of this group is also far from clear. We have made
our best attempt to put the most accurate Latin name with
each cultivar listed here, but you may find some listings at
variance with ours.

Amelanchier canadensis ‘Prince William’
Amelanchier x grandiflora ‘Princess Diana’
Prince William is an excellent multi-stemmed large shrub.
It will reach an ultimate height of 8 to 10’ with about a
6’ spread. Of course Prince William has abundant white
flowers and excellent orange/red fall color, but perhaps the
attribute that most distinguishes this variety is its heavy
yields of wonderful blueberry-like fruit. You’ll have to race
the birds to harvest them, though. Having been selected
near Madison, WI it is hardy to USDA zone 3.
This gracefully spreading small tree has abundant white
flowers in the spring followed by edible purplish fruits up
to 3/8” in diameter. This tree will attain 20’ in height by
15’ wide, usually with several main stems. For all its fine
attributes, Princess Diana’s fall color is the most outstanding.
Beginning in early October (Wisconsin) and lasting late in
the season, the leaves of Princess Diana produce the most
vivid display of brilliant red fall color imaginable! Hardy to
USDA zone 3.

Betula nigra ‘BNMTF’
As the name implies, this superior river
birch from Georgia was selected for its
notable tolerance to summer heat, so characteristic of the

interesting exfoliation pattern of the bark, and good fall
color that has been described as “butter-yellow”. The leaves
are smaller than average for the species and are spaced
closely on the shoots, thereby giving even young trees the
effect of a very dense canopy. Dura-Heat® is also rated as
having greater resistance to bronze birch borer and leaf
miner compared to white-barked birch species. Adapted to
USDA zones 4 through 9.

(RIVER BIRCHES)
Lately some birches have been known to suffer from a
physiological condition known as “Mouse Ear” which is
characterized by deformed leaves and in severe cases, limb
dieback and stunting. River birch is particularly susceptible
to this problem in the nursery. It appears that this condition
is aggravated when soil or substrate pH is too high and/or
when excessive amounts of copper, manganese, or zinc ions
are present in the soil solution. The best theory explaining
this problem appears to be that of a previously unheard-of
physiological disorder, namely: nickel deficiency. The jury is
still out as to whether or not nickel treatments may be the
“silver” bullet to solve this problem. However, attention to
this species’ cultural preferences of acidic soils and adequate
moisture coupled with the avoidance of fungicides or
culture systems that contain or release excessive Cu++, Mn++
or Zn++ ions should also go a long way in alleviating this
disorder in the nursery.

is interesting in all the seasons and begins at a relatively
young age), resistance to bronze birch borer, and its good
form. Other attributes of this fine selection include: vigorous
growth, adaptation to diverse soil types, large dark green

This series represents an
exciting development in the
history of paper birch: beautiful clonal selections which
possess bronze birch borer resistance. Both are rated hardy
to USDA zones 3 to 7.
Renaissance Oasis® Paper Birch (‘Oenci’ PP12,766) is
the most stress tolerant selection of the series. It has
undergone extensive testing in the heat of southwestern
Ohio and is bronze birch borer resistant. The juvenile bark
is also an outstanding reddish bronze, turning white with
attractive exfoliation. Because of its distinctive pyramidal
form, Renaissance Oasis® is the best choice for single-stem
specimen use.
Renaissance Reflection® Paper Birch (‘Renci’ PP12,768)
was the first release in the series and is characterized
by heat tolerance, rapid growth, and attractive slender
pyramidal habit. The fall coloration is a nice yellow and its
bark matures to a brilliant white. Of the two Renaissance
varieties, this one is the more popular choice for clump or
multi-stem applications.

Betula platyphylla ‘Fargo’ PP10,963
Dakota Pinnacle® is notable for its unusually narrow
pyramidal habit that borders on columnar. It is not
completely resistant to borers but has a reliably high level
of tolerance relative to seedlings. The dark green foliage is
retained later into the autumn than most birches, even in
northern climates. Over the years, the bark changes from
darker orange white tones (on young trees) to an ultimately
yellowish white on mature trees. In trials it has performed
very well in areas of high wind, moderate drought, intense
heat and heavy soils with elevated pH, making it a good
choice for many sites in the Midwest and Mountain states
that would otherwise challenge birch trees. The tolerance to
poor conditions, coupled with a unique narrow habit, make
Dakota Pinnacle® an excellent addition to the list of trees for
urban settings. Widely adapted to USDA zones 3/4 to 7/8.

Betula hybrid
Forest Pansy Redbud
Betula populifolia
(POPLAR [GRAy] BIRCH)
whitespire poplar (gray) birch
Betula populifolia ‘Whitespire’
This tried and true selection has proven its value in the
struggle against borers. There is some amount of confusion
in the nomenclature of this cultivar: Clonal propagules of
the original ‘Whitespire’ selection (a single superior tree
in Wisconsin) are now often referred to as “Whitespire
Sr.” (senior) in the trade. Named varieties of woody
plants, especially trees, almost never “come true from
seed.” Unfortunately, seedlings of the true ‘Whitespire’
parent have been marketed over the years as the superior
cultivar ‘Whitespire’. To further compound the confusion,
‘Whitespire’ was originally thought to be an Asian white
birch (B. platyphylla), but has since been identified as being
a poplar (or gray) birch (B. populifolia), which also happens
to be a species native to the United States. As a result of
these unrelated naming issues, some growers refer to seedpropagated trees of B. populifolia as Whitespire birches
(implying that Whitespire is the common name for the
species). Because Whitespire was the originally-intended
cultivar name for this superior upright-pyramidal tree with
its bright white, non-exfoliating bark, we have elected to
retain it. Whitespire poplar birch is best adapted to northern
climates, from USDA zones 4 to 6, possibly into some parts
of zone 7.

This selection, probably a
hybrid between B. platyphylla

choice for its nice exfoliating whitish/cinnamon bark and
deep red leaves. The leaf color holds well during the summer.
Having originated in Wisconsin, it is easily hardy to USDA
zone 4 and possibly 3. It is important to point out that this
cultivar does not possess reliable bronze birch borer resistance
and does require a bit more staking and training than
most trees in the nursery row. It is, however, an undeniably
beautiful tree, usually topping out at 30 to 35’ with a crown
diameter of about 20’.

Cercis species
(REDBuDS)
Redbuds are unique among temperate-zone trees in that
they possess a trait, found almost exclusively in tropical
plants, called cauliflory. Cauliflory has nothing to do with
a certain vegetable with a similar name, but is rather the
technical name for the ability to bear flowers on the stem
and from the same node year after year. Because redbuds
are cauliflorous, they are capable of flowering on the
main trunks of even well calipered trees. Botanists believe
that modern day redbuds are tertiary relicts from tropical
ancestors that adapted to climate change (towards colder)
over the millennia. Most plants are unable to adapt to
drastic climate change that occurs due to ice ages or major
changes in weather patterns. Luckily redbuds proved to be
an exception to this rule and it is for this reason that they’re
so distinctly beautiful in our temperate-zone gardens.
forest pansy redbud
Cercis canadensis ‘Forest Pansy’
This redbud is unique with its intensely colored reddishpurple heart-shaped leaves in the spring that become a deep
reddish green in the summer. The flowers (which precede
the leaves) have a darker rose-purple color than the straight
species, as one would expect from a plant with so much
pigmentation. This highly desirable tree can reach heights
exceeding 20’, but most often attains 10 to 15’ with a
spreading crown. Hardiness to USDA zone 6, possibly 5.

make a beautiful small flowering tree. As the name implies,
the flowers are lavender-purple in color and are borne

and darker than seedlings, so they create an interesting
“shingled” effect on the weeping branches. It has survived

Cercis canadensis ‘Hearts of Gold’ PP17,740
This variety hardly needs a description as its big, beautiful
golden heart-shaped leaves sell
themselves. But we could point
out that the lavender red flowers
in the spring are effective as they are plentiful in each cluster
and that the growing tips in the spring take on an orange/red
tone which makes a nice contrast to the older, chartreusecolored leaves. It is also noteworthy that although this
plant is predominately yellow in leaf it is not at all lacking in
vigor! One’s imagination can run wild with the landscape
possibilities of this great new plant. Hearts of Gold should
reach 20 to 25’ with a roughly equal spread, adapted to
USDA hardiness zones 6 to 9. This plant may behave more
like a dieback shrub in colder zones, which of course would
not be a fatal problem considering our plants are ownrooted! Please note, Hearts of Gold will express its gold color
much better in full sun, in the shade it will rapidly green out.

bunchberry
This is the first release of a redbud from the US National
Arboretum. It is named in honor of one of the arboretum’s
breeders who worked extensively with
redbuds and other woody plants. Don
Egolf is somewhat more compact in
growth habit (9’ tall by 9.5’ wide in
15 years) than Avondale or seedling
chinese redbuds. When in flower it
really is a sight to behold, with its
bright pink flowers so tightly packed
on the stem as to obscure the bark.
The floral display is all the more
impressive because you’ll find flowers
solid from the branches all the way to
the ground. The plant in full flower
actually looks a lot like a piñata done
in shrub-form. We must not fail to
mention that this variety is also completely sterile, so there is no need to

Cornus canadensis
Bunchberry is certainly one of our best native groundcovers.
It can be found growing naturally in the understory of
boreal (northern) forests or in high elevation sites further
south. It rarely reaches more than six inches in height, but is
capable of spreading slowly over several square feet of area.
It is relatively exacting in its climatic and soil requirements,
preferring acid soils with no small amount of organic matter
and filtered light to deep shade. Bunchberry will not do
well in warm areas or droughty sites. Bunchberry leaves are
borne in fours on the tops of its stems, as are its flower
“petals” (actually these are modified bracts). Even when in
fruit it is showy, as the fruits are borne in tight clusters and
are bright orange in color. Fall foliage is generally red before
the leaves drop off. Best adapted to cooler parts of USDA
zones 3 to 7.
We put this wonderful groundcover in vitro because of
frequent complaints of certain production problems: Seeds
are cumbersome to germinate and division of established
plants can be inconsistent. Susceptibility to root disease is
another possible limitation to division. We think that you
will find these clean, uniform, and vigorous transplants will
be a great way to start a fine crop of liners. We grow bunch
berries only in small size paper plugs, and to order:
So please allow 3 to 6 months’ lead time for delivery.

(HAzELnuT)
harry lauder's walking stick hazelnut
Corylus avellana 'Contorta'
Originally selected in England, this unusual hazelnut is
distinguished by intense curling of its trunk, branches, and
even leaves. It is most interesting in the winter when this
unique twisted habit is fully exposed. It also makes quite a
show in early spring when abundant, long, bright-yellow
catkins dangle from its contorted stems. The catkins set the
entire tree aglow when maximally extended. Hazelnuts are
notorious for suckering, but because these plants are on
their own roots, the suckers will also be contorted, thereby
reducing the need for constant removal to maintain the
unique and beautiful appearance of this small tree (ultimate
height 8' to 10'). It should be noted that this cultivar does
not possess significant resistance to eastern filbert blight.

Blue-colored leaves are “in” and this
brand new Smoketree from Holland

colorful Smoketree palette. In addition to the blue coloring
in the summer, the new growth is dark pink in the spring.
In the fall, older leaves take on pink tones and the tips turn
orange/red. For such an innovative plant, we are a bit
puzzled by the name; not only does the plant possess a
unique color, it is also a very vigorous and robust form of
this species, with leaves that are both rounder than the
species and about twice as large. We are pleased to make
available to the industry some of the first plants in North
America of what will surely be a bestseller. USDA hardiness

Smoketrees are usually grown as shrubs, but can reach the

derives from the resemblance to puffs of smoke within
the foliage provided by their hairy and densely-branched

droughty soils and extremes in temperature, however
sites with a history of Verticillium should be avoided, as
smoketrees are fairly susceptible to this root pathogen.

The foliage does not scorch in full sun unless exceptionally
dry conditions prevail. Golden Spirit has pink inflorescences

Mango Meadowbrite™ is the second
coneflower release from the Chicago
Botanic Garden breeding program. It is
similar to Orange Meadowbrite™ in
most aspects except that it has no red pigment, thus the
blooms are a tropical-looking, deep rich yellow, much like
the flesh of a ripe mango fruit. It too will supply you with
blooms all summer long that are even more fragrant than
other coneflowers. Recommended for USDA zones 4 to 9.

orange meadowbrite™ coneflower
Echinacea hybrid ‘Art’s Pride’ PP15,090
This is the first coneflower ever to
be released with orange petals! A
true plant breeding breakthrough,
Orange Meadowbrite™ has taken the perennial world by
storm. Now gardeners in many climates can enjoy its tropical
orange colors from June till September. The flowers also have
a sweet, spicy fragrance as an added bonus. This wonderful
plant will eventually reach dimensions of 2’ wide and high
with dark green, glossy leaves. Once established it will
tolerate some drought, but must have adequate drainage in
the winter. Adapted to USDA zones 4 to 9.

paranoia coneflower
Echinacea hybrid (purpurea x paradoxa)
‘Paranoia’ PP 16,587
This attractive Echinacea is unique due to its dwarf compact
habit and yellow narrow petal flowers. This Echinacea is
striking in the perennial garden, and unique as a cut flower.
Amazingly, it is only 12-inch tall when grown in the Eastern
USA. The really good news for growers is that ‘Paranoia’ has
a good multiplication rate and these divisions or “splits” can
fit into cell packs. This allows a propagator to sell as a very
young plant or as a good-sized liner. USDA cold hardiness

innovative new variety is echoed in its tight pink flowers
which are themselves borne on sturdy, upright stems.
There are a great deal of applications for a plant with these
dimensions and long lasting color display, both in large and
small landscape settings. This bright and cheery variety is
well adapted to full sun situations in USDA zones 4 to 9,
with mature dimensions being 18” tall by 20-24” wide.

Fargesia murieliae New Umbrella is
one of the very best bamboos for the
garden. It is clump forming; therefore
no rhizome barrier is needed. A mature clump (10 years)
will reach approximately 6 ft in diameter and about 1012 feet tall. New Umbrella is a new seedling selection,
resembling the mother plant (collected by Ernest Wilson in
1907) in stature and decorative value. Young green culms
are covered with powder and the leaves are delicate green.
It is particularly appreciated as a solitary specimen, or en

This exciting new introduction originated
as a branch sport from Fothergilla
major ‘Mt. Airy’ and is blessed with
the same vigorous constitution and
well-structured habit. The most alluring
aspect is the striking display of large bluegray leaves, which develop and intensify as the foliage
matures. The ivory white flowers are 1 to 2” long, honey
scented, and appear in feather like filaments at the ends of
the branches in April-May with the new foliage. An
outstanding autumn display of rich yellow, red and orange
lasts two to three weeks, usually coming on in late October
to November. Blue Shadow is a medium-size deciduous
shrub 5 to 6’ high and wide and easily adapts to sun or
partial shade. The blue color tends to develop better in the
shade, though. It is tolerant to a wide range of soil and
environmental conditions, needs little pruning and has no
major disease or insect problems. Cold hardiness to USDA
zone 4 and heat tolerance to zone 8.

Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Ward’ PP10,027
Here is a sweet gum that does it all! First, it is
nearly free of gumballs (fruits). The few fruits
that are found usually fail to develop into the
hard and pointy things that litter your lawn.
Instead they normally remain small and under-developed.
The other nice thing about this tree is that it has normal,
dark green, star shaped leaves, like you’d expect from a
sweet gum. Cherokee™ also has vigorous growth that
develops as a pyramidal habit with a good central leader,
becoming more oval in outline with age. As you would
expect from a good sweet gum variety, the fall color is a
nice burgundy red and the bark develops those interesting
corky extrusions, too. And, on top of all these attributes,
Cherokee™ Sweet Gum is hardy to -28º F, making it better
adapted to northern regions than your average seedling-run
sweet gum.
snow queen oakleaf hydrangea
Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Snow Queen’
Probably the most elegant and showy of the full-sized
oakleaf hydrangea varieties, Snow Queen was selected
for its predominance of sterile florets (the showy ones)
and big, full bloom trusses. Since the florets are single
the inflorescences don’t weigh-down the stems like
double-flowered forms, so they are held upright, thereby
reducing sprawl and displaying the beautiful blooms more
prominently. Fall color is a nice, deep, reddish purple.

Magnolia virginiana
This beautiful and refined deciduous vine is a great
choice for covering walls or sturdy fences with its lustrous
green vegetation complemented superbly by abundant
(and fragrant) white lace cap inflorescences in early to
midsummer. Climbing hydrangea is best sited in partial to
full shade. Although fall color is nil, the vine sports lovely
bronzy exfoliating bark in the winter on nice stout stems.
This vine does not need to be tied or trained to what it
climbs as it produces holdfasts (modified adventitious roots)
that keep it attached to most any vertical surface. This
wonderful plant should be in every garden. Best adapted in
USDA zones 4 to 7.

This new sweetbay magnolia was selected
for its hardiness, vigorous growth, beautiful
dark semi-evergreen foliage, and distinct
upright growth habit. Moonglow® has proven to be very
winter hardy, having survived the terrible winters of the
1970’s in northern Illinois. There was no visible damage
from the sudden blast of arctic air on November 2, 1991
when temperatures dropped to -1º F after a full month of
temperatures in the 50’s and 60’s. It showed no damage in
the early 1980’s when the winter low was -28º F. In January
1999 it withstood -33º F with no apparent damage. This
hardy magnolia’s almost evergreen foliage, upright habit of
growth, and long period of flowering in late spring make it
a very desirable tree for the home landscape, or for planting
on city streets where a small tree is desirable. This new
cultivar will mature at about 35’ in height, with a 15 to 18’
spread. Moonglow® flowers at a very young age, usually
within two years from planting. Besides a long blooming
period, the flowers also have a lemon-scented fragrance that
is very pleasing. Adapted through USDA zone 5 and south.

Platanus x acerifolia
(PLAnETREE)
bloodgood london planetree
Platanus x acerifolia ‘Bloodgood’
Originally selected for good vigor and above average
resistance to anthracnose, this variety has become the
most popular and best known of the London planetrees.
We started producing Bloodgood in vitro at the request of
some quality-minded shade tree producers who wanted
to eliminate the long shanks from their hardwood cuttingpropagated trees. With our TC-derived plants, there’ll be
plenty of buds packed down low. So the grower can stub
back the plants as low as desired and not have to worry
about accidentally cutting off all of the buds. London
planetrees are famous for their beautifully toned, exfoliating
bark and adaptability to less-than-ideal soil and climate
situations. Planetrees can be seen lining the streets of
practically any major city in the world (outside of the deep
tropics or really cold places). Assuming an average or better
site, you can expect Bloodgood to top out at about 50’.
Adapted through USDA zones 4 to 9.

Morus alba ‘Chaparral’
Compared to the more common Pendula cultivar, Chaparral
has a lot to offer. Its superior traits include: finer-textured,
lobed leaves that look like miniature fig leaves, true sterility
(no messy fruits), and a more refined habit in general. The
plant, if left to its own devices, forms a sprawling mound
or groundcover. It can of course be trained to any desired
height and from there its elegant branches will cascade
down. The trunk can be trained straight or serpentine
and with our own-rooted transplants, you’ll never have
the unsightly off-type suckers of budded or grafted trees.
Hardiness to USDA zones 4 or 5.

Prunus species and hybrids
(FLOWERInG CHERRIES)
Tired of budding cherry seedlings? Our flowering cherry
selections include: Own-rooted varieties, an own-root
interstem, and new clonal size-controlling rootstock selections.
We’re betting that own-root F 12/1 and the other clonal
rootstocks will ultimately prove to be superior alternatives
to mazzard stock. With these rooted interstems and new
rootstocks, we hope to see an elimination of unsightly basal
overgrowth in the case of the former and bringing on earlier
flowering and reduced tree volume in the case of the latter.
Twisty Baby™ Locust
kwanzan flowering cherry, vc
Prunus serrulata ‘Kwanzan’
Besides the above potential innovations, and in the interest
of giving all of our Prunus the best start possible in life, we
inoculate all of our plantlets with NOGALL™ crown-gall
antagonist immediately prior to planting. When used properly,
NOGALL™ has proven highly effective in combating Crown
Gall (Agrobacterium tumefaciens) incidence in Prunus and
other susceptible woody species. It is recommended that
NOGALL™ be used whenever susceptible plant material is
handled/wounded to ensure continuing benefit.
Hardy and well-known, this cultivar combines show-stopping
flowering display with great foliage and habit. Double pink
flowers are abundant and appear before the foliage. New
foliage is also interesting in that it comes out a bronze color
that quickly changes to dark green. Kwanzan’s fall color is
excellent for a cherry, with bronzy orange or orangey red
hues. The strongly vase-shaped habit is also very useful as a
structural element in the landscape. Ultimate height 30’
with a 20’ spread. Hardy to USDA zone 5.
In this section you’ll see the letters VC following the variety
name. This denotes “Virus Certified.”

Prunus avium ‘F 12/1’
Originally selected as a semi-vigorous rootstock for
commercial sweet cherry production, this variety has been
employed extensively as an interstem in the production of
flowering cherry trees. It is favored for the nice, clean surface
of the bark and very straight trunk it produces. Normally
F12/1 is budded on mazzard (Prunus avium seedlings)
and grown up the following year to be top-worked with
the variety of choice. Now you can buy own-rooted F 12/1
interstems, thereby saving you the trouble of having to
buy-in and later bud seedlings. This not only reduces labor
costs but will also eliminate the unsightly swollen base of
the mazzard stock that is often seen in landscapes on
traditionally produced trees. Virus Certified (VC).

tabel™ cherry rootstock, vc
This selection was developed by the French
National Institute of Agricultural Research
(INRA) because of the size control (vigor reduction) and precocity (entry into production) it was found to impart to
sweet cherries (P. avium). Besides these traits, it also has few
suckers, is tolerant to wet soils and is well-anchored.
Although not yet tested extensively with flowering cherry
varieties, we felt that if these traits were good for commercial cherry growers, they should be equally welcome in the
home landscape! Since P. cerasus has equal or greater cold
hardiness than any variety of P. avium, P. serrulata, P. x subhirtella, or P. x yedoensis, the resulting finished tree should
therefore be cold-hardy anywhere the above-named flowering cherry species are already grown. Virus certified (VC).

snow fountains®
weeping flowering cherry, vc
Prunus hybrid ‘Snofozam’
This famous selection
was named for its strong
weeping habit and profusion of single white flowers that,
in the spring, give it the appearance of a fountain of snow.
It is listed as being drought and heat tolerant, with clean,
dark green, disease-tolerant foliage that turns golden to
orange/red in the fall. Since our starts are own-rooted they
are useful for producing finished trees that do not have any
unsightly graft unions or rootstock suckers shooting up out

Prunus hybrids
'VSL-2' PP15,723 and

prairie flame™ shining sumac
Rhus copallina var. latifolia ‘Morton’
These new cherry
rootstocks come from the famous Eremin Prunus breeding
program in Krymsk (Krasnodar Region) Russia. They were
originally selected as hardy, size-controlling rootstocks
for sweet cherries. In trials in Russia, Europe, and North
America, they have proven to be more tolerant to drought,
heat, cold, nematodes and calcareous soils than mazzard.
Although not yet tested extensively with flowering cherry
varieties, they may prove useful for sites with soil problems.
Because these stocks were selected for precocity, their
use with flowering cherries may impart some size control
and increased flowering to the varieties worked on them.
With sweet cherries, both of these selections produce trees
smaller than standard (mazzard); Krymsk® 5 is less vigorous
than Krymsk® 6. These are virus certified (VC) rootstocks,
any varieties budded onto them should also be virus free.

purple robe locust
Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Purple Robe’
Crimson Pointe™ Plum is a
highly innovative, tight
columnar selection of
Newport Plum. The branches are
so strongly ascendant that they
practically parallel the axis of the
main trunk, resulting in a tight
column which will top out at
around 20’ but with only a 4 to 5’
spread. In addition to its very unplum-like formal habit, its mature
leaves are a deep merlot-burgundy
color which contrasts nicely with
the new growth that has an
orange-bronze hue. This is
certainly a unique combination of
size, shape and color. Crimson
Pointe™ may be grown in a
multistem fashion (with multiple
Crimson Pointe ™ Plum
heading cuts made during the
growing season) as a replacement for that moth-eaten thing
called Purple Sandcherry (P. x cistena). Another possibility is
as a single-trunked tree, ideal for street plantings. Hedging
applications also come to mind. Best suited to USDA zones
4 to 7. This is virus certified.

Prairie Flame™ is a compact and beautiful
specimen of flameleaf sumac. Whereas the
straight species may reach upwards of 25’ in height with an
even broader spread (by underground suckers), this one is
constrained by a moderated growth habit to dimensions less
than half that size, bringing it back into the realm of
something that may be safely planted in a garden (albeit a
large one). Besides compact habit, it has wonderful dark
green and glossy leaves that turn a striking fire-engine red
in fall. It also has dense creamy-white terminal flower spikes
in late summer that don’t set fruit (male clone). Although
hardy to intense drought and sharp winter cold (to USDA
zone 5 or possibly 4), it should not be planted in soils where
verticillium wilt is present.

Twisty Baby™ is a real eye-catcher, with its highly

choice for containers or smaller gardens where it can
be prominently featured as a specimen. In open ground
it can reach 15 to 20’ in height, but can be maintained
much smaller in a large container or tub. The twisted
branches are charcoal gray in color and contrast nicely
with the grass-green leaflets they bear. This variety is
shy of flowering, but in warmer climates some flowers
may occur. Adaptation is rated to USDA zones 3 to 9.

primrose yellow bloom trusses and shiny, cinnamon colored
bark. The blooms also have a wonderful fragrance, which is
an added bonus. Its range of adaptation will probably
include USDA zones 4 to 7.

allée® elm
(LInDEnS)
Ulmus parvifolia ‘Emer II’ PP7552
american sentry™ linden
Here is a tree that can bring back the
cathedral-like feel that we lost when
dutch elm disease wiped-out our
beautiful native U. americana that
once lined so many of our streets. The original tree has
attained 75’ in height with a vase-shaped spread of over
50’. Besides this classic elm growth habit, Allée® also boasts
a trunk that provides year-round beauty and interest: First,
the bark exfoliates in jigsaw puzzle patterns in shades of
green, gray, brown and orange, and secondly, as it grows, it
also displays a gorgeous fluted pattern that gives the whole
tree the look of a finely sculpted piece of art. The foliage is
a rich, dark green during the entire summer, and looks just
as good at the end of the season as at the beginning. Fall
color varies from yellow to yellow/red. Besides disease
resistance, Allée® is not troubled by Japanese or elm leaf
beetles. This dramatic addition to our urban landscapes is
adapted from USDA zones 5/6 to 9.
Tilia americana ‘McKSentry’
The main attribute of this named selection of our native
basswood is its highly symmetrical pyramidal habit. As
compared to seedlings, this variety has a somewhat reduced
spread and consistently good crotch angles with uniform
distribution of the branches within the crown. It is also
worth noting that a pleasantly spicy fragrance permeates
the air when the tree comes into bloom in late spring.
Ultimate height 45 to 55’ with a 30 to 40 spread. Hardy to

Ulmus species and hybrids
(ELMS)
Elms are trees with a long and important history in
American landscapes. Unfortunately with the advent of
certain serious pests and pathogens, in particular Dutch Elm
Disease, the course of that history has changed drastically
in recent decades. But out of the struggle against these
pressures has emerged a diverse group of new hybrids and
selections which promise to bring this highly ornamental
genus back to the forefront of American horticulture.

frontier elm
Ulmus hybrid ‘Frontier’
Frontier is one of several hybrid elms developed by
the United States National Arboretum. It is a novel
hybrid of the spring-flowering species U. carpinifolia and the fall-flowering U. parvifolia. This innovative combination brings resistance to Dutch Elm Disease together
with a desirable upright-pyramidal habit and a strong central leader, but with smaller stature than other elms. The
leaves of this variety are also smaller than average for an
elm and turn an unusual and attractive bright reddish-purple
in the fall. Topping out at around 30’ in height with a 15 to
20’ wide crown, this small tree might be the best choice
among the various elm varieties for smaller urban landscapes. Frontier elm is adapted to USDA zones 5 to 8.

wisteria
27
Wisteria species
(WISTERIAS)
No porch or arbor should be without a wisteria! What a
beautiful and interesting group of plants! The taxonomy of
wisterias can be difficult, and not all sources agree with the
classification of the varieties. There are some common themes
that are useful to know: All American species bloom on new
wood, after leaf emergence. Asian ones bloom on previous
year’s wood. Because of this, American species have more
“effective” hardiness. With work, all wisterias can be grown
as small trees, but it is against their nature, they would much
rather twine up trees or some other support. Also, if grown
without support, they can make an effective groundcover in
a short time. These vines are long-lived and very beautiful in
bloom. American wisterias are generally less vigorous than
their Asian counterparts, which is also an advantage as the
Asian species are gaining a somewhat unsavory reputation
for invasiveness. Kentucky wisteria (W. macrostachya) is generally hardier to cold and can tolerate wet soils better than
American wisteria (W. frutescens).
For those who might be wondering if micropropagation
may delay flowering, we are pleased to report that feedback
from our customers has indicated that no such delay occurs.
amethyst falls american wisteria
Wisteria frutescens ‘Amethyst Falls’
This fine selection is most likely the best known cultivar of
American Wisteria. Fragrant bluish purple flowers are borne
on short and wide racemes that look somewhat like grape
clusters. Besides late spring blooming, they often bloom
again during the summer months. This selection from HeadLee Nursery in South Carolina is protected (i.e. proprietary)
outside of the United States. Adapted to USDA zones 5 or
6 to 9.

at your preferred time: we recommend that you place your order as early as possible. Six months is a good guideline for materials in small sizes and nine to twelve
months for larger sized materials. We know that it can be difficult to know your
needs that far in advance, so we recommend that you order your basic amount so
that we can be working on the bulk of your order, we can make adjustments later
as we get closer to the desired ship date. And as always, if you run short of something in the meantime, never hesitate to call as we may have some unallocated
inventory or a crop on the way of exactly what you need!
PLEASE NOTE: If you do not receive an acknowledgement within two weeks,
please call us. Without receipt of an acknowledgement we cannot be deemed
to have received your order. For additional details about ordering, please see the
Important Policy and Terms Information section below.
shipping and receiving information
Shipment options: If your order is to be shipped, we will normally use carriers
of our choosing unless you specify some other means of shipment. We can ship your
plants any time of the year by truck, within four business days, to most places in the
United States (excluding AK and HI and acts of God or unforeseen circumstances).
Shipping charges or boxing costs, where incurred, are invoiced at our cost. Buyer
assumes all shipping expense. Buyer accepts full risk of any losses during shipment.
How to order: We’re flexible! you may phone-in or e-mail, or send in
your completed order form by mail or fax (please keep a copy for your records).
North American Plants, LLC will acknowledge (confirm) your order as soon as we
have arrived at a mutually acceptable shipping date, quantity and size. This can
occasionally take some time, especially where new varieties or difficult species are
concerned.
Deposits: North American Plants, LLC’s general policy is to require a 25%
deposit on advance orders, due within thirty (30) days of acknowledgement. If we
do not receive your timely deposit when requested, and unless you have otherwise
been advised in writing, your acknowledgement may be deemed cancelled. In the
case that an order is not so cancelled it will receive lower priority in the case of
shortages. Notwithstanding any acknowledgement, we cannot guarantee availability on items for which requested deposits were not received in a timely manner.
The deposit requirement may be waived in certain circumstances which include: for
items acknowledged as “if available” (see below) or when ordering items that are
already in stock, which will be shipped soon after ordering.
“Regular” and “If Available” acknowledgements: All orders
will be by written acknowledgement or invoice. In the event of any difference between the Terms and Conditions of this Ornamentals Catalogue and
those stated on the reverse of the invoice or acknowledgement; the Terms and
Conditions set forth on the reverse of the acknowledgement or invoice shall
control all transactions, except that the deposit referred to above will apply.
Boxed and palletized shipment
For items that are either in stock, or that are in full and normal production, any
order shall be confirmed with a written acknowledgement (regular acknowledgement). Deposits
on such orders may apply. There are, however, circumstances where products in certain varieties or
sizes may be in short supply or cannot be assured
for delivery by a specific date. Items to which these
circumstances apply may then be confirmed as “If
Available” and will not require a deposit but are
likewise understood to be less secure. Due to their
uncertain nature, such acknowledgements may be
cancelled without notice or recourse. Although
the acknowledgement in this case will not guarantee their availability, it will establish your priority
in the case of availability.
Cancellation: Any cancellation of confirmed
orders will be subject to written approval from
North American Plants, LLC. In certain cases, any One of our delivery carts
deposits collected on such orders may be retained
in lieu of other damages. In cases of default on
account or late cancellation of an acknowledged order, we reserve the right to
cancel any remaining acknowledged orders of the canceling party.
Minimums: North American Plants, LLC is a wholesale-only nursery. The
minimum order for shipment within the United States constitutes: Four (4) trays
per variety and eight (8) total flats per order (of one or two varieties).
Ordering proprietary materials: For those customers who hold licenses
for royalty-bearing materials; we can in most (but not all) cases waive the collection
of royalties at the point of sale to you. Please note: possession of a state-issued
nursery license should not be confused with being a licensee for a given proprietary variety.

Pickup at North American Plants: If you wish to pick up your order here,
please give us at least three (3) business days’ advance notice so that we can grade
your order and have it prepared. It is recommended that the cargo area of your
means of conveyance be covered so that the wind will not tatter or desiccate the
leaves. If such covered vehicle is not available, just let us know ahead of time and
we’ll have your plants boxed and ready for travel on your flatbed or pickup truck.
Please note: Materials ordered and not picked up within 30 days notice of their
availability or within 30 days of their acknowledged ship date (whichever is longer)
may be reallocated to other customers. In this circumstance, the items so affected
will be backordered or cancelled at our discretion. Any deposits paid on such items
may be retained in lieu of re-stocking charges.
Once unpacked, it is highly recommended to give the plants a good drink of
water, just in case they got a little dry while in transit.
It is important to know, also, that we do not use any shade cloth in our production process. Notwithstanding this fact, though, if they’re in active growth and
have been in a box for a few days (en route to you) it is not a bad idea to acclimatize them to their new environment at your place. For this, a little shade may
be helpful for a couple of days before commencing transplanting. IMPORTANT:
In warm weather, actively growing transplants will dry out, they may need water
twice a day under hot and/or dry conditions and until established.
Additional information: Please see the Important Policy and Terms
Information in the next section, below for more details on shipping.

Catalog, our website, order form, or availability list are intended only for those
United States entities engaged in the business of buying and selling nursery

to flood, drought, fire, frost, hail, contamination, errors in the inventory or count
or any other cause or act of God beyond our control. Any discount appearing
on an invoice or acknowledgement is discretionary and shall never be deemed
as constituting a continuing discount. All prices are in U.S. funds and are F.O.B.,

576 quality starter plants per box
How to unpack boxes with small (144) flats: When you receive
your order, it will have been graded for uniformity and count. Small (144) flats are
shipped four to a box (total 576 plants/box). To accomplish this, we use folded
cardboard inserts to make two layers of two flats in the box.
If you are receiving small-size transplants, PLEASE NOTE: The proper way to
remove the flats from the box is to lift out the entire insert (with the tray inside).
Do not try to remove the tray from the insert while still in the box, as the insert
is specifically designed to prevent free movement of the flat while in the box. By
removing the insert first, the tray inside it is thereby “unlocked.”

Care after receipt: Upon receipt of your shipment, please unpack it
immediately and inspect for any damage. VERY IMPORTANT: if boxes arrive late,
in bad shape, or there is some other obvious problem when the material arrives;
then please note any damage or loss on the carrier’s documents. If such damage
is not noted on the carrier’s documents, they will almost never honor your claim.
North American Plants can assist you in filing a claim for shipping damages, but
we cannot be held liable for them. Please let us know, in any case, if you have any
problems with your shipment.
Payment and credit policy: Once plant materials have been shipped or
delivered, the balance owing for them is due within thirty (30) days from invoice
date unless otherwise indicated on the invoice. Past due balances incur a 1.5% per
month finance charge. Accounts that become past due may be placed in “Cash
On Delivery” status. Such COD accounts may also be subject to larger deposits if
future orders are accepted. Payments received on any account will be allocated at
our discretion. Any payment received from a customer with a past due balance
will be allocated first to finance charges (if applicable), then to service charges
(if applicable), then to the oldest balances. We do not accept post dated checks.
Any check returned to us for insufficient funds will be assessed a $35.00 service
charge. We reserve the right to perform credit checks on new accounts in order to
determine credit worthiness.
Taxes, assessments, royalties and other costs: All applicable royalties, taxes, including but not limited to, sales taxes, use taxes, or any other special
tax assessments shall be fully paid by the Buyer and will be added to the invoice
total and collected by North American Plants, LLC.
Limited warranty and technical advice: Our plants are periodically
inspected by the Oregon Department of Agriculture and certified to be apparently free of dangerous insects and dangerously contagious plant diseases. Except
where otherwise noted within the catalog, North American Plants, LLC warranties
its plant material to be true-to-name and in good living condition at the time of
shipment to you. However, North American Plants, LLC makes no representations
or warranties, expressed or implied, with respect to the vigor, pest or disease
resistance, climatic adaptability, yield or quality of fruit or flowers, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or any other characteristic of any variety we
produce. The foregoing list is intended to act as an example and in no way acts
as a complete list of limitations. It is mutually agreed and understood that should
any claim arise regarding plant materials that our total liability will be limited to
replacement of the material in question free of charge or a refund of the purchase
price on said item(s). This limitation also applies to any plant material that proves
not to be true to name. Any claims arising from unsatisfactory quality of stock
must be reported within the timeframes specified in the Terms and Conditions set
forth on the invoice and held for advice as to disposition. Beyond those specified
timeframes, materials will be deemed to be accepted in good condition. North
American Plants, LLC reserves the right to not consider any claims that arise after
delivered materials have been processed, stored improperly, transplanted, or otherwise altered. It is expressly understood that any technical advice furnished by
North American Plants, LLC with reference to the use of its products is given gratis
and as a courtesy and that North American Plants, LLC assumes no obligation or
liability for the advice given or results obtained, all such advice being given and
accepted at Buyer’s risk.

customer’s (your) credit applications.
3)
To the US or state governments for tax purposes.
4)

5)
In legal proceedings, and to the appropriate legal authorities.
6)
If asked for references, we may name some of our customers.
7)
In response to queries about the origin/sources of our foundation stock
(see next subsection).
It is North American Plants, LLC’s policy not to disclose information about:
1)
Our customer’s buying habits, volumes of consumption, varietal mix, etc.
unless in specific connection to one of the cases named above.
2)
Any other aspect of our business relationship not specifically authorized,
unless in connection with one of the cases described above.
Policies regarding foundation stock of our clonal lines: As a
micropropagation facility, we are honored to play a unique role in the production of
high quality transplants that you, our customer, will purchase and resell as a finished
product. The principal part of the overall quality of our products as well as yours, ultimately, is the phytosanitary status and trueness-to-name of the varieties we produce.
Accordingly, we make diligent efforts to always start with the highest quality, trueto-name materials, but we do not consider ourselves experts with respect to clonal
identification. So when selecting the initial material with which to begin our lines, we
rely upon the highly esteemed plant knowledge possessed by the owners of varieties, or alternatively from select nursery producers of these materials. Occasionally,
customers will inquire about the source of the plant material we used to initiate our
cultures, we will gladly share this relevant information.
It is also our policy that the individual(s) or nursery(ies) that provide(s) us with the
foundation material of a given variety be the first in line for the eventual production
of transplants from that material. North American Plants, LLC reserves the right in
these cases to offer additional production to other buyers once the immediate needs
of the original provider(s) are satisfied. In cases of involving exclusive or experimental
proprietary materials, the foregoing obviously would not apply.
Custom micropropagation of proprietary materials: A significant
share of our business is done on a custom basis. North American Plants, LLC accepts
custom micropropagation work only on the express condition that the customer is
authorized to possess, propagate and/or sublicense for propagation, any and all proprietary materials that may be involved. Please contact us for more details.

Patented and trademarked varieties: Unauthorized (unlicensed) propagation of patented varieties and/or unauthorized use of trademarks is unlawful and
prosecutable. Purchasing plant material from North American Plants, LLC never inherently authorizes you as a buyer or grower to propagate any additional units of proprietary materials for which you are not licensed. It is also prohibited to sell, donate,
or otherwise transfer proprietary materials to end users or unlicensed third parties
without Proper Labels (see below) attached to, or supplied with, each unit sold. If you
would like to purchase a proprietary variety for which you are not licensed, then you
will need to sign our Customer Label and Non-Propagation Agreement and comply
with its terms. A copy of this agreement may be obtained upon request or by visiting
our website. Individuals who do not comply with these rules may be reported to the
licensors or owners of the materials involved who may, at their discretion, instigate
prosecution for patent or trademark infringement on that individual.
Proper Labels: Proper Labels (some might call them “patent tags”) can be
defined as any durable label that provides purchasers the applicable notifications as
to: the plant’s patent status and/or as to the trademark status of its name. Proper
Labels can be plain text-only labels or fancy full-color affairs. In either case, to be
deemed “proper” they must adhere substantially the following simple rules:
If using trademarked (brand) names in advertising copy or labels, the trademarked
name should include the ™ or ® symbol immediately to the right of the trademarked
name. For example:
Red Sunset® Red Maple
Acer rubrum ‘Franksred’
This label properly identifies the registered trademark “Red Sunset” used in connection with the Franksred cultivar of red maple.
Rubyfrost™ Red Maple
Acer rubrum ‘Polara’
This label properly identifies the common-law or pending trademark “Rubyfrost”
used in connection with the Polara cultivar of red maple.
When listing or labeling patented materials, the plant patent number (or patent
applied for acronym - PPAF) must be clearly stated immediately following the cultivar
name. Some wording indicating that unauthorized propagation is prohibited should
also be added. For example:
Golden Spirit Smoketree
Cotinus coggygria ‘Golden Spirit’ PP13,082
Asexual or sexual reproduction of this patented plant is prohibited without a license.
or
White Satin Birch
Betula hybrid ‘White Satin’ PPAF
Asexual or sexual reproduction of this patented plant is prohibited without a license.
For additional information on your rights and obligations concerning proprietary
materials, please contact the management at North American Plants, LLC.
We believe, and hope that you agree, that the foregoing policies are in line with
accepted practices for our industry.
