Signs and Signage:
what is needed to be visible
Signage needs to clearly
communicate a message
and convey brand
recognition
Even basic symbols can be
signs
Left: a South Carolina liquor
store chain that started during
prohibition. They were not
allowed to erect a sign so they
used a simple geometric symbol.
Symbol Signs from the Olympics
The 1968 Summer Olympics
symbols were designed by
Lance Wyman. These
stylish icons helped visitors
navigate events. Many are
still used around the world
today.

What successful Retailers are doing
- and what misses the boat
Successful retailers not only have brand recognition, they also often have
architectural consistency in their building facades (Home Depot, Lowes,
Pizza Hut)
Location and visibility is key
What misses the boat
These stores can't be seen from the road, even though the mall is fairly
new construction, because they're too far back. Driving by, all you see
are empty parking lots.
JoAnn Fabrics, Barnes &
Noble, Five Below,
Home Goods, Game
Stop, etc.
Award winning billboards –
what makes a good sign
The following examples of billboards add a little tongue
and cheek humor
The message is simple enough to be red in seven seconds or
less while driving a car at 70 mph.
