2016 Oneida County Travel Guide
Whether you believe in spirits or not, after two centuries
of guests at the Hulbert House in Boonville, there are a
lot of stories tell. One prevalent story is about Wayne, a
spirit who has been seen — and photographed — standing in a doorway outside Room 25. He appears to be a
large man in a old military uniform. The Hulbert House
once was a gathering spot for Civil War soldiers going
off to war.
Other spirits that have been studied, recorded and
photographed by paranormal groups through the years
include little Lucy, a child who often is heard running
through the hotel.
Up to recent times, residents and guests have stayed
in second-floor rooms. Rooms on the third floor no longer are used for that purpose. There have been no residents on that floor of the Hulbert House since the early
1970s. Those halls and rooms still retain furniture, decor and belongings from days past.

educational experience for the young

place the second weekend in June, and
includes a parade of champions down
Main Street.
The Hall began as a local project
in 1990, when Ed Brophy wanted to
honor a pair of Mohawk Valley natives
for their boxing accomplishments. But
it wasn’t long before Carmen Basilio
and Billy Backus were joined by the
likes of Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis
and Rocky Marciano, and the Hall of
Fame became what we know today -- a
shrine to more than 1,000 boxers and
contributors.

If a weekend immersed in history is
your ideal getaway, Oneida County
is the perfect destination. Located at
the convergence of many important
travel routes, an extraordinarily diverse amount of significant history
happened here.
In Rome, visitors can tour Fort
Stanwix National Monument. Known
as “the fort that never surrendered”
for successfully thwarting an intense
siege in 1777, Stanwix was built to
protect traders during the French
and Indian War and was also used
during the Revolutionary War. 2016
marks the 40th anniversary of the
reconstruction of the Fort on the
original foundation and the Centennial Celebration of the National Park
Service.
Just six miles away at the Oriskany Battlefield, explore the site of
one of the Revolutionary War’s most
deadly battles. Considered by many
to be a critical turning point in the
War, hundreds of brave soldiers lost
their lives in Oriskany, fighting for
American independence.
In Sherrill, the Oneida Community Mansion House offers an intriguing tour that lends insight into a
mysterious utopian community that
endured for decades – even though
marriage was not allowed.
The building of the Erie Canal
sparked countless cultural and commercial developments across New
York State. The digging of the original canal, known as Clinton’s Ditch,
began in Rome on July 4, 1817.
Interested in the history of
American sports? Check out the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown or the International Boxing
Hall of Fame in Canastota.
Be sure to visit the Baron Von
Steuben Memorial State Historic
Site, see astounding bygone architecture and decorative arts at Fountain
Elms, learn about the Oneida Indian
Nation at Shako:wi Cultural Center,
and explore a long list of historic sites
just waiting to ignite your passion for
the past.

ONEIDA COUNTY IS HOME TO 27 GOLF
COURSES WITHIN 27 MINUTES.
With 27 courses within 27 minutes,
golfers can immerse themselves in an
entire vacation of course exploration.
Valley View course in Utica was designed by the famous Robert Trent
Jones Sr., whose design philosophy
was “a golf hole should be a hard par
and an easy bogey.” Rome Country
Club’s beautiful course is completely
irrigated (roughs, too!) and is rated
four stars by Golf Digest.
Turning Stone Casino Resort
has five spectacular courses, three of
which are PGA-level, 18-hole championship courses. Atunyote and
Kaluhyat were each honored on Golf
Digest’s prestigious America’s 100
Greatest Public Courses list for 20152016.
Those looking for a more relaxed
game will enjoy Pleasant Knolls, a
player-friendly recreational course
GOLF TRAINING CENTER AT TURNING STONE RESORT,
VERONA
offering 9 holes of par 36 golf. Golfers in a hurry will appreciate Sandstone Hollow. Designed by legendary
course architect Rick Smith, with the
busy golfer in mind, the Hollow ranks
among the top 25 par 3 courses in the
United States.

If your perfect getaway means bountiful time in the great outdoors, you
won’t find a more ideal destination
than Oneida County. Book a campsite, cottage, room, or house and
spend your days doing all the activities you love all around the county.
Explore Pixley or Trenton Falls.
Bike the Erie Canalway Trail or Forest Park. Take a nature walk on the
Root Glen’s garden trails or a relaxing ride on the Adirondack Scenic
Railroad. Enjoy mountain biking
the BREIA Trail System, rent a boat
or launch your own from a marina
on Oneida Lake, and ride horseback
at Dar Maur Manor, Whisper Wind
Equestrian Center, or Adventure
Horse Riding.
Travelers with a passion for fishing may never want to leave. With
some of the best bass, trout, walleye, panfish, and pike fisheries in the
Northeast, we’re considered to be
one of the greatest American fishing
spots. In the winter, shanty up and
ice fish on Oneida or Delta Lake. You
can also experience exceptional fly
fishing on the famous West Canada
Creek.
Kayakers, too, have a multitude
of options. Fish Creek Cabin Resorts
offers thrilling guided tours of 9.4
miles of some of the finest Class III
whitewater rapids in the Northeast.
Paddlers seeking a more peaceful
experience can book tours and enjoy
more than 25 miles of calm-water

And this is really just the beginning of the outdoor possibilities
Oneida County has to offer. Numerous state parks and forests, miles of

2016 Oneida County Travel Guide
WINTER ADVENTUR E
If winter excites you, a trip to Oneida
County is a must. Whether your intent is to dig into some outdoor activities or enjoy a peaceful weekend
cozied up in a warm cabin, Oneida
County will exceed your expectations.
Our winters are among the finest
in America. Boonville consistently
ranks in the nation’s snowiest places, sometimes topping the list. With
more than 500 miles (804km) of
trails, it’s the perfect destination for
snowmobiling and snowshoeing. The
fact that twelve Snowmobile Clubs
exist throughout the county speaks
for the quality of the experience.
A cross-country skier’s paradise,
the BREIA Trails are more than 31
miles (50km) in length, making them
one of the largest groomed cross
country ski systems in the East. If
downhill is more your style, visitors
of all ages can ski – or tube – down the
slopes at Woods Valley or Val Bialas
Sports Center.
At the Utica Aud, cheer on the
Utica Comets pro hockey team or the
Utica College Hockey team. There are
also many arenas available for those
who wish to play hockey or skate.
Interested in curling? Take a lesson,
plan an event, or just watch at the
Utica Curling Club.
Oneida County is the place to
make your winter fantasies come
true. A variety of cabins, houses, bed
and breakfasts, hotels, motels, and
campsites are available throughout
the county, so you’re sure to find
something that meets your needs and
desires.
You may never in your life see
winter scenery quite as brilliant as
the Adirondack greenery frosted
winter white. So plan a getaway to
Oneida County and seize the season.

For sports fans we have a variety
of events and activities in Oneida
County. Start with a local favorite
by getting rowdy and cheering on
the Utica Comets AHL pro hockey or
the Utica College hockey team at the
Utica Aud, voted one of the 10 Coolest Hockey Rinks in the World by
complex.com for its design.
If college sports are your thing,
you’ll be busy. We host over 20,000
students at more than a dozen area
colleges. These institutions boast
outstanding facilities and some of
the nation’s top teams.
Catch a game with the MLB stars
of tomorrow, the Utica Brewers,
Rome Generals, or Adirondack Trail
Blazers, Collegiate Baseball Leagues.
Baseball enthusiasts shouldn’t miss
a visit to Cooperstown’s National
Baseball Hall of Fame. The museum
features nearly 40,000 items and
tells the history of baseball through
a three-story time line.
Be inspired by the greats at the
nearby International Boxing Hall of
Fame in Canastota, just off the NYS
Thruway exit 34.
Get ready to lace-up your sneak-
ers because Oneida County is a hot
bed for running as well. Just about
every weekend you can find a road
race that fits your skill level, and be
sure to check out uticaroadrunners.
org for a full calendar of events. We
all love the Utica Boilermaker Road
Race 15K, but other local favorites
include Rome’s Fort to Fort Race in
April and the Falling Leaves Road
Race in September.
Utica is also the home of America’s Greatest Heart Run and Walk,
which is the best of its kind by far.
Each year the community raises
over $1 million for the American
Heart Association.

GET AWAY TO Gather
A Fresh & Beautiful Gathering Place
ERIE CANAL CRUISE
There are four main reasons people choose to host events in Oneida
County. The first is our conveniently
accessible location. Utica, Rome, Verona, and Sylvan Beach are just off
NYS Thruway I-90 Exits 31 through
34 and we’re only minutes from Syracuse’s Hancock International Airport.
The second reason? Our natural
beauty. Imagine hills, valleys, forests,
and lakes as the backdrop for your
event.
Third reason is our food. Rich local farming, strong traditions, and
ethnic diversity converge in Oneida
County to produce memorably delicious fare. Fourth reason is that
event planners are attracted to the
quality and variety of our venues.
Corporate Events & Conventions
We’re home to many impressive
state-of-the-art facilities that can
host any number of guests and more
than 3,000 rooms are available
throughout the county. With 27 golf
courses within 27 minutes, planning
the perfect golf outing is a breeze.
Hosting a large convention? Look into
Turning Stone Resort Casino, Vernon
Downs Casino Hotel, Radisson Hotel,
Hotel Utica, or the Holiday Inn. Planning a more intimate gathering? Try
a small, unique venue like the Oneida
Community Mansion or the F.X. Matt
Brewery.
Weddings
Oneida County offers an unforgettable array of possibilities from large
48 |
2016 Oneida County Travel Guide
fairy tale receptions in the ballrooms
at Vernon Downs, to swanky affairs at the Shenandoah Clubhouse
and The Beeches. Rustic but elegant
barn weddings at the Hayloft on the
Arch in Vernon Center or the historic
Union Chapel, built in 1887 in Sylvan
Beach are just some of the possibilities.
Group Trips & Bus Tours
If you’re planning a trip to entertain a
large group, you can’t go wrong with:
a trip on Erie Canal Cruises’ doubledecker Lil Diamond III, a visit to the
Munson-Williams-Proctor Museum
of Art, a Saranac Brewery tour, or
ranger-guided exploration of Fort
Stanwix National Monument.
Let us help you create
your next successful event.

If you’re passionate about local foods;
if you care about the “where” behind
what’s on your plate; and if your ideal day includes visiting the market,
farm, or nursery, then head over to
Oneida County.
Eleven farmers’ markets offer visitors access to the freshest foods the
county has to offer. Not sure where to
start? Try the nationally recognized
Oneida County Public Market in Utica
or the old-fashioned Clinton Farmers’
Market on the village green. For a map
of farmers’ markets, visit the Cornell
Cooperative Extension website. To
learn about locally grown and produced products, visit CNYFresh.com.
The entire county is loaded with
farm stands that can be easily found
just by jumping in the car. In the fall,
visit one of many pumpkin patches,
pick apples at North Star Orchards, or
savor a just-pressed cup of cider at the
Clinton Cider Mill. Enjoy dairy tours
of Mercer’s, Sunnyview, the Finndale,
or Full Circle Farms.
Celebrate your fresh finds with
a locally made beverage. Adirondack Distillery uses environmentally
friendly processes and local ingredients to create high-quality vodka,
bourbon, and gin. F.X. Matt Brewing
Company produces the award-winning Saranac lineup of craft beers
and soft drinks. Nail Creek Pub and
Brewery offers selective releases of
house-brewed beers. Check out BrewCentralNY.com to learn more about
our locally produced beers, wine, and
spirits.
Visit Oneida County to gather
up the season’s bounty and prepare
something amazingly fresh, healthy,
and delicious for your family. Don’t
feel like cooking? Unwind and enjoy
a meal at one of the area’s exceptional
farm-to-table restaurants like The
Tailor & the Cook in Utica’s Bagg’s
Square, Nola’s in the village of Clinton,
or Piggy Pat’s BBQ in New Hartford.

Dear Traveler,
On behalf of the Mohawk Valley Association of Realtors, I’d like to personally thank you for visiting our great area. We sincerely hope that
your time here in Oneida County was everything you expected, and much more. The Mohawk Valley is the cradle of many things, but for
those of us who live, work and play here, it’s our home. And like all good neighbors, we’d like to share our home with you.
If your visit here left you wanting a more permanent Mohawk Valley experience, one where your daily life is rarely routine, we’re here to
help. The Oneida County region delivers four full seasons of outdoor living, theater and entertainment, night life and activities. We are close
to everything our great state has to offer, and many of New York State’s greatest attractions are either in our backyard, or a day trip away.
There’s camping, fishing and boating in the summer. When the snow flies, we have hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails to explore, as well
as access to the best skiing in the Northeast. In the spring and fall, you’ll enjoy some of the most magnificent foliage in the nation.
Are you a foodie? Our dining is second to none, with more family-owned specialty restaurants than franchised eateries.
Commuting in the area is a snap – no matter where you are, you’re close to where you need to be.
Our area is welcoming to people from around the world, or around the corner. No matter where you’re from, you’ll feel like you’re a native
in no time.
Oneida County offers some of the most affordable real estate in the northeast, and housing options range from modest starter homes to
grand Adirondack lodges, with every possible option in between. We have homes dating back to pre-Revolutionary War times, and we have
new construction – whatever your style, we can make it happen.
If you loved your visit, and you’d like to make Oneida County your permanent place of residence, call a Realtor. Our team of professionals
across the Mohawk Valley Association of Realtors will welcome you home.
All of my best,
Ed Jekel
