Annual Report - Community Action Center of Northfield
Meeting Northfield’s
GROWING NEEDS
Annual Report 2015
A Letter From the Executive Director
September 2015
Dear Friend of the Community Action Center,
In these pages you’ll meet people of worth and value whose lives have been changed by
receiving a little help at the right time:
• A
devoted mother who needed temporary assistance when she lost her longtime job due
to a change in hours that wouldn’t have allowed her to properly care for her children, and
• A
good man who just needed some “soft skills” coaching to deal with a habit that was
getting in the way of successful employment, and
• A
kind woman whose drive to help others grows from her gratitude for being helped when
she needed it most.
Jim Blaha, Executive Director
These people – your Northfield neighbors – know that the Community Action Center helps
where we’re needed.
This year we’ve increased assistance in housing, a growing area of need for our clients, as
well as providing essential employment services through our very successful new Northfield
Works program. At the same time, we’re maintaining our strong programs that feed the hungry,
clothe people in need, and offer an essential hand up that helps
YOUR GIFT WILL HELP ENSURE
our neighbors back to self-sufficiency.
THAT THE COMMUNITY ACTION
And now we need your help.
CENTER STAYS STRONG SO IT IS
Just as we adapt to help meet the community’s changing needs,
we need your help to meet changing economic realities. Some of
ALWAYS HERE FOR THOSE IN NEED.
our funding sources have decreased, and we depend on you, the
caring people who best know our work and understand our local needs, to help ensure we
can continue to meet those needs.
I ask you to make a gift today to support the Community Action Center, and to consider
increasing your support of the CAC to fill the gap where other funding sources have
decreased. A donation envelope is included for your convenience, or visit
www.communityactioncenter.org/donate to contribute online.
If you normally write one check to us each year, thank you – and I ask you to increase the
amount this time, or write a second check. Or consider donating on a more regular basis: Many
people find it convenient to set up automatic monthly or quarterly donations that painlessly
increase the total they can give. Call me today at 507.664.3550, or indicate on the enclosed
form that you’d like to set up recurring donations, and we will set up automatic withdrawals
that you can stop whenever you like.
Today, your gift of $1,000, $500, $100 or $50 will help ensure that the Community Action
Center stays strong so it is always here for those in need.
Thank you for your many contributions to our community. We appreciate your continued
partnership and kindness.
Best regards,
Jim Blaha
Executive Director

Northfield’s needs
are changing!
Especially in the
housing arena.
Yes, we’re distributing more food.
625,000 pounds last year.
And we’re helping more children through
Operation Backpack, Christmas Sharing
and Activity Scholarships. 1,664 children
were served last year.
But most notably, our housing needs
and services increased. Substantially.
We served 70% more people with rent
assistance this year than last year.
Help us meet the growing needs of
Northfield residents.
MAKE A GIFT TODAY.

To Xochitl (pronounced so-chill), her children are
her world. And while this, alone, does not define
her as a parent, she recently faced a difficult
decision that does: adjust her work schedule to
meet her employers’ needs – a job she had held
for eight years – while sacrificing the needs of her
children, or strike out and find a new job. She chose
the latter. And through the transition, the CAC has
provided much-needed support.
Xochitl
“The CAC has helped us a lot – food, clothes, money
for rent and electricity, and helping me apply for
medical assistance. They’ve helped fill a gap that
will allow me to search for a job that will work for
me and my kids. I’m very thankful. The CAC is like
family – it’s a place that you can ask for help.”

Soft-skills training for a new future
A hard worker, Jerry has held a number of interesting
jobs over his lifetime – from master jeweler to security
officer, diesel mechanic to caregiver. Still, he’ll tell
you that one of the best things that ever happened to
him was getting to know the people at the CAC.
“I have always really enjoyed caring for people, but I
needed help managing my emotions on the job. I
know the right way to get a job done, and when things
weren’t going the way that I know is right, I’d get angry.
That wasn’t good for me or my employer.”
Through the CAC’s Northfield Works program, Jerry
received soft-skills training to help him manage his
emotions on the job. “The CAC is absolutely fabulous.
It’s the center of Northfield and an outlet for people
who really need help. They’ve been a great support
and advocate for me.”

Jerry
Annette’s 13-year journey in and out of
homelessness – which ended thanks to
support from the CAC – has inspired her to
help other people. She has always been a
caregiver and dreams of someday opening
a shelter for young teens who are parents
and struggling to make ends meet. In the
meantime, she’s working to build a stable
life through her work as a CNA.
Annette
“The CAC is great. Everyone is very willing
to help as long as you’re willing to help
yourself, too.” Annette benefitted from the
CNA training program offered through the
CAC. She has also had many listening ears
who have helped her find stability in her new
home and job. “The best way to describe the
CAC is helpful and encouraging. Everyone
here is great.”
