Welcome to Sarawak!
2009 marks another auspicious year for this Land of the
Hornbills as it will be celebrating the inauguration of the new
Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) building or the State Legislative
Assembly building in Petra Jaya this July. Sited just across the
river bank from the iconic Waterfront in the heart of the city,
this landmark building is also bound to be another icon
to Kuching with its unique and beautiful structure that both
inspires and evoke emotions of wonder.

The significance of the DUN for Sarawak is both historical
and indicative of the state’s governance. Sarawak hosted the
first legislative session in 1867 in Bintulu, in the record as the
nation’s first such meeting. It was presided by Rajah Charles
Brooke during the reign of the White Rajahs and called the
General Council then. In 1903 the legislative assembly was
then called Council Negeri. The inauguration of the present
DUN building also culminated with the sitting of the Rulers’
Conference. In keeping with tradition, this new DUN building
will also be inaugurated with a Rulers’ Conference and the first
sitting of the legislative assembly in the later part of the year.
I am sure that dignitaries and visitors will take this opportunity
to visit the DUN building during the inauguration as it will be a
historic event for the state.
In conjunction with the launch of the DUN building, there will
also be a special Regatta held along the Sarawak River to mark
the occasion. The staging of the Sarawak Regatta, the oldest
recorded regatta in South East Asia, River Floats and Fireworks
which will be another interesting, and eventful affair, will follow
this. There will be hard races among the competing teams and
light ones among the tourists and visitors while the sideline
activities of duck catching, pole climbing and others will add to
the thrill of the event. It is an event that will remain in the
memories of those who come to see and share in the day of the
races among the thousands who annually make this pilgrimage
to the state’s capital!
Of course, Sarawak has more to offer visitors and locals alike
throughout the year with events and conferences that will
continuously bring in people from all over the world. The state’s
new Borneo Convention Centre will also be opening its doors to
the public later this year and is another iconic building with its
hotel, conference and other facilities for guests sitting on an
isthmus along the river! There are underwater wonders, jungle
adventures and caving spectaculars as well as cultural
extravaganzas throughout Sarawak like the Borneo Cultural
festival in Sibu which will appeal to a range of visitors in this
land of diverse ethnicity, religion and culture. There is always
something that will attract people from all over the world
here and the memory that all visitors bring back with them is
the ever-smiling face of the people wherever they go in this
land of smiles!
Enjoy your stay and enjoy reading Borneo Talk, as such
publications will be part of the living heritage of our state.
Thank you!

Just as Sarawak is unique for its ethnic,
cultural and religious diversity, there
is also a unique Islamic Information
Centre (IIC) with a mission to further
the understanding of Islam through
interactions with the community in a
series of programmes and activities.

at Jalan Uplands, the main building

structure combined beautifully with
other ethnic architectural design
to form an outstanding, aesthetically
pleasing building.
“Our Centre will celebrate its first
anniversary this August. Given the
current economic situation and the fact
that there is a lot more that we need to
do to create a better understanding
TourismTalk
A place for
better understanding
of Islam
and appreciation of Islam, our
Centre’s anniversary celebration will
be carried out on a modest scale”
said the Chief Executive Officer of
IIC, Ms Zabariah Haji Matali. “What
is more important is that since day
one, we have worked out a series
of programmes that strives to bring
together people from all over the
country to come here to share and
collaborate on ways to work together
for the betterment of humankind.
I believe we were set up at an
opportune time when Islam has been
given quite negative perceptions around
the world, it is our role then to correct
that mistrust and misperceptions. Islam
is a religion of peace and justice and
always will be for universal good for
everyone; ideals and values which
have not been widely publicised.
Our Centre is open to anyone who
wishes to understand Islam better
and how we can all live together in
harmony with one another and with
our environment.”
On the national front, the IIC is
planning to set itself up as one
of the information Centres for
Islam through the compilation of
materials and resources of historical
significance and research works from
scholars and others who donate their
works to the centre. These materials
and compilations will in turn be
made available to those who come
to the Centre for their own research
work and with modern IT facilities,
the IIC is able to maintain close
contacts with other such Centres
around the globe.
Apart from being a Centre for
information, IIC aims to be one of
the leading institutions in the quest
to dispel doubts and misunderstanding
on Islam. This involves sending the
right messages to others about
the religion and inviting people of
different beliefs and faiths to join
in discussions at the Centre. The IIC
aims to bring together more experts
and scholars in the future to share
views and understanding of the
religion, not only in Malaysia but also
from other corners of the world.
The IIC holds numerous talks and
forums on current issues and concerns
as they relate to Islam and the society
at large. Also, the Centre conducts
Friday prayers with sermons in
English. In fact, the IIC is the only
Centre in the State that provides
such services to its congregation.
There are always upcoming activities
at the Centre and these are also
available on the Centre’s website for
those who wish to participate.

214th Rulers’ Conference at Istana Negara Kuala Lumpur in 2008.
Sarawak plays host to
New State Legislative Assembly building.
6
| BorneoTalkJul-Sept2009
Sarawak will once again play host
to the Rulers’ Conference with the
meeting scheduled in the state
capital, Kuching on the 28th to 30th
July this year. This will coincide with
the official opening of the new State
Legislative Assembly building, sited
majestically on the opposite bank
of the famed Waterfront. This 218th
Rulers’ Conference will mark the third
of such conferences that Sarawak
has had the honour to host. The first
being in year 1979, where Sarawak
hosted the 116th Rulers’ Conference
which culminated in the opening of
our very first State Legislative Assembly
Building. The State was again given
the honour to host the 157th Rulers’
Conference in 1992.
The Rulers’ Conference is a meeting
of the nine rulers of the Malay
states (Negeri Sembilan, Selangor,
Perlis, Terengganu, Kedah, Kelantan,
Pahang, Johor, and Perak) and the
four governors or Yang di-Pertua
Negeri of Penang, Malacca, Sabah,
and Sarawak. Formally known as the
Council of Rulers of Malaysia, this is
the only such institution in the world
and was established by Article 38
of the Constitution of Malaysia. The
first such Conference of Rulers was
convened on August 31st, 1948 and
TourismTalk
generally three meetings are held
annually at the Istana Negara (palace)
but the venues can be changed on
agreement of all concerned. Each
Malay Ruler on a rotational basis
usually chairs these meetings.
The main function of the conference is
to deliberate on matters pertaining to
national policy, religious observances
and election of the King or Yang Di
Pertuan Agong and his deputy, once
every five years or after the death of
the King. Interestingly though, once
elected King, the Ruler is no longer
a member of the Conference and
his place being taken by a Regent
appointed by him to such meetings.
These meetings are customarily
attended by the King and the Prime
Minister who represents the Federal
Government and the Rulers and
Governors, each of whom is
accompanied by the Menteri Besar
or Chief Minister. The Keeper of the
Rulers’ Seal is the appointed official
of the Conference of Rulers and acts as
Secretary to the Conference of Rulers.
Apart from the many functions of
the Conference, its members must
also be consulted on the appointments
of Chief Justice of the Federal Court,
the President of the Court of Appeal,
Chief Judges of the High Courts, the
other judges of the Federal Court of
Appeal and the High Court, the
Auditor-General, The Chairman,
Deputy Chairman and members
of the Public Services Commission;
The Chairman, Deputy Chairman
and other members of the Railway
Service Commission; Chairman and
members of the Election Commission.
157th Rulers’ Conference in Kuching in 1992.
As host for this royal event, Sarawak will
have the opportunity to showcase its
range of ethnic, culture and religious
diversity that is unique in the nation
and members of the public and
visitors will also be entertained by
these colourful displays. A number of
events will also be specially hosted to
welcome these royal entourage and
their family members who will also
take the opportunity to visit the
various places of interests in the
state. In view of the auspicious
occasion, there will be the official
opening of the new State Legislative
Assembly building, a special regatta,
river floats and fireworks to be held at
the Sarawak River, which will provide
thrills and spills for everyone in the city!

10th – 12th July 2009
Twelve years in the running, with over
100 internationally renowned bands
strutting their stuff on stage, the
Rainforest World Music Festival in
Sarawak is the music event of the
year! A must see and experience music
festival, these performers range from
traditional to ultra modern, east to west
and even diffusion artists marrying the
old and modern for new wave music;
this event has no rival for its repertoire
of artistes. To be held from 10th - 12th
July in the ‘living museum’, the
Sarawak Cultural Village, in Kuching,
Sarawak, the stage is set for another
three nights of happy dancing, feet
stomping session under the open sky
in the heart of the ancient rainforest.
The participating bands this year
include Zawose Family Africa from
Tanzania, Noreummachi (Korea),
Moana & the Tribe (New Zealand),
Red Chamber (Canada/China),
Jouhiorkesteri (Finland), Muzsikas
(Hungary), Inti Illimani (Chile), Jeff &
The Vida (USA), Dazkarieh (Portugal),
Oudaden (Morocco), Poum Tchak
(France), Asika (Malaysia), Sekaa Jaya
Jenggala (Indonesia), The Nicholas
Orchestra (Poland), Lan-E Tuyang
(Sarawak, Malaysia), Kinabalu Merdu
Sound (Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia) and
AkashA (Malaysia). For the record,
22,000 revelers jammed packed the
RWMF last year and you can be sure
that many will be back for more!
Live performances are just one part
of the obsession with RWMF; the
jamming, interactive afternoon
workshop sessions are equally thrilling
for many as they get real close up
and personal with these performers!
Each of the three afternoons will
feature some of the performers and
those with artistic inclinations can also
browse the displays at the Rainforest
World Craft Bazaar (RWCB) held
simultaneously with the festival. In
fact, there are lots more to do and
see than just music at the RWMF; it
is just an excuse to take in the sun,
superb food and drink, places to visit
and friendly faces that Sarawak is
famous for.
Who would have thought that a simple
idea of inviting traditional music
performers for a jamming session in
1998 would evolve into the music
phenomena it is today which attracts
visitors from all over the world for this
annual event. Truly an international
icon for music, RWMF is one of
Malaysia’s premier tourism events
that has put Sarawak on the world
map. This can be seen from the list
of prestigious awards the event has
garnered over the years, including
Pacific Asia Travel Associations Gold
Award in 2006, and recently the
Aseanta Award of Excellence 2009
for Best ASEAN Marketing and
Promotional Campaign category.
First time visitors to RWMF need to
really book early for their places as
the number of places to stay can
be limited and tickets for each day’s
performances too. Check out the
various packages available at: www.

Bazaar
Venue: Sarawak Cultural Village
by Heidi Munan
The Rainforest World Music Festival.
Crowds throng the picturesque Sarawak
Cultural Village (SCV). The dark flank of
Mt. Santubong echoes to the strains
of music. The crowds get hungry – a
plethora of food stalls offers every cuisine
imaginable. Then the crowd would
like to go shopping, and voilà! The
Rainforest World Crafts Bazaar (RWCB)
spreads the wealth of Borneo craft for
them to choose from.
The inaugural Rainforest World Crafts
Bazaar, held in July 2008, was a
resounding success (see www.crafthub.
com.my - Events). RWCB 09 promises
to be even better.
The area around the Malay and Melanau
houses in the SCV is transformed into a
colourful bazaar. Traditional craftsmen
and craftswomen from Sarawak ply
their trades, and display their wares:
basketry, mats, beadwork of all kinds,
woodcarvings, metalwork, ceramics
ancient and modern, artistic ikat
textiles. Not forgetting bamboo flutes,
wood xylophones, sape guitars and
drums of all sorts – there’s a music
festival going on.
•
The RWCB is a truly international event
– look at the 2008 spread:
• Young Japanese artist Asano
Chisanto and friends brought a
collection of grotesque hand-made
puppets based on the famous
Japanese comic books.
• Zoia Mambetalieva’s family left
their home in Kyrghyzstan to
exhibit their country’s famous
wool felt products: slippers, toys,
headgear – their tall ‘Jengis-Khan
hats’ were much admired and
constantly photographed!
• Udjo Ngalagena of West Java sent
his skilled bamboo workers to
delight the crowds with their
sophisticated angklung (bamboo
‘piano’) and related bamboo
crafts; local craftsmen were often
seen in deep conversation with
their brother reed-workers from
Indonesia.
• Susanne Kampp carried a golf
bag full of willow wands all the
way from Denmark to Sarawak to
demonstrate the time-honoured
craft of willow-weaving at the
Rainforest World Crafts Bazaar.
• Gossamer shawls from Gujarat
Province were brought to the
RWCB by Kamaldeep Kaur, an
Indian lady who confesses she is
‘in love with Sarawak’.
And don’t forget the coiled baskets
from Sabah … the mother-of-pearl
brooches from Bali … the splendid
songket from Sumatra … the intricate
embroideries from India …
Korea contributed lacquer and
textile knicknacks spread out for
sale by two gracious ladies.
How do we get in?
The RWCB is a fringe event of the music
festival; from the 10th to the 12th July
only visitors with Rainforest World Music
Festival (RWMF) passes can enter.
But here’s the good news: The RWCB
starts two days early! The official opening
is on the 8th, while the 9th is RWCB open
day whereby SCV has very kindly opens its
doors, admitting local visitors (bring your
IC!) at the reduced rate of RM15, or RM5
for children in school uniform. This is your
chance to visit the RWCB, shop for crafts,
watch the demonstrations, then stroll
around the famous cultural village and
enjoy the floorshow.
Make the most of it – come one come all!
Wednesday, 8th July: Official Opening • Thursday, 9th July: Open Day at SCV – special rate for entry tickets. DON’T MISS IT! open from 10am to 6pm •

Crafts in
The Modern Era
Unique products, live demonstrations and skill exhibitions by Kraftangan Malaysia
• 25th July – 2nd August 2009 •
(Sarawak) all in one location – Waterfront Kuching
There is no better time and place to
sample Malaysia’s craft products than
during the Regatta Festival cum
Kuching City Day at the “Promosi
Kraft Malaysia” from 25th July to
2nd August 2009 at the Kuching
Waterfront. Occupying a large section
of the Waterfront, products unique
to Sarawak and other states in Malaysia
such as batik, wood and bamboo
based products, ceramics and even
glass will be on display daily from
10am to 10pm. A native palm,
Nibong will be the centerpiece as
its multiple uses and versatility will be
incorporated into unique products.
“Some eighty entrepreneurs from
throughout Malaysia including
Sarawak will be showcasing their
unique products and there will also be
ten demonstrations, including a classy
glass blowing show,” revealed Mohd
Latif Dirun, Director Kraftangan
Malaysia (Sarawak), the organiser for
the exhibition. “Among the many
exhibits and demonstrations, there
will be Penan craftsmen showcasing
their carving skills and visitors can
interact with these crafts masters,
providing a rewarding experience to
both groups. Children will find the
traditional games using handmade
products interesting and challenging
as there will be no reset buttons like
in PC or TV games!”
According to the Director, the main
objectives of the “Promosi Kraft
Malaysia” is to provide opportunities
for craftsmen to showcase and sell their
products, which are unique in many
ways and of very high quality as each is
crafted separately. The demonstrations
and exhibitions will provide interactive
opportunities for visitors and craftsmen,
which will further promote local
products and increase understanding
and appreciation of these unique
products. Among the states
participating this time around will
be Sabah, Johor, Malacca, Negeri
Sembilan, Terengganu and the East
Coast Batik Cooperative.
“While we try as much to retain our
traditional skills by producing traditional
products, we also incorporate new
concepts which are in tune with
modern times and make these
products more appealing and saleable.
Thus visitors will also see some of the
new and innovative crafts equipment
and tools to further add value to
traditional products,” he added.
One thing is for certain; there will
be innovative products utilising local
materials in attractive fashion to
appeal to modern taste and lifestyle
at the exhibition.

Launching of Pandaw River
Cruise - 1st July
Sibu
The Adventure Centre of
Central Sarawak
Experience the dynamism of modern
Sibu and explore the newly
commemorated Hoover Memorial
Square dedicated to the memory
of Pastor James Hoover. Often
called the modernizer of Sibu with
his tireless work in bringing roads,
electricity and telephone, schools
and creating jobs, Hoover’s
contribution to the town is now
fondly remembered in the square.
Of course, Pastor Hoover was
exemplary for his missionary work
in introducing Methodist theology
to the people here and the memorial
will attract people connected to
the original movement back to the
town. Another international icon is
the launching of Yu Lon San Tien
En Si Temple, which is the biggest
in the world covering Taoism,
Buddhism and Confucianism
theology. The inaugural Pandaw
Cruise along the Rajang River will
be an eye-opener for tourists
who have never been to Borneo’s
longhouses and riverine beauty.
So, welcome to Sibu, the town
where history, nature and friendly
people are a way of life!

The Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) is an annual
event with many activities going on at the same
time. The multi-racial and multi-cultural events
of all the communities make the BCF a natural
crowd-puller for locals and tourists alike. Walking
into the BCF’s venue at the Sibu Town Square is
like walking into the homes of the three main
communities of Chinese, Dayak and Malay/
Melanau: the only place where one can see
and experience all the activities taking place
simultaneously under one roof.
If you are into traditional games, the BCF has
plenty, from Chinese chess to tug-of-war to
gasing just to name a few. These games are also
a fascination to visitors.
The BCF features scores of singers, musicians,
and dancers who will perform continuously
throughout the event from 3rd - 11th July this
time. This is certainly the place to see the best in
local talents and cultures and the excitement will
be a treat to all, young and old alike.
For those into arts and paintings, the Cultural
Belt is the place to visit during the BCF. Taking
place at the sub-basement of the Town Square,
for the whole duration of the BCF, it showcases
the artistic work of locals in paintings (of all types),
drawing, photography, and Chinese calligraphy.
The sights, sounds and colours that are authentically
Sarawakian can be captured at the BCF, providing
an irresistible treat for shutterbugs also. In addition
to the musical and cultural varieties on show,
there is the side appeal of the traders selling a
wide variety of items ranging from traditional
food, arts and handicrafts, drinks, clothes, and
communication devices.
Business and industrial entrepreneurs as well
as captains of industry flock to the BCF Tradex
(Trade and Exhibition) to view the latest innovations
on show. This is the place where exhibition of
commercial and industrial products, including
promotion of consumable goods will be taking
place, also during the BCF.
The BCF is not only an evening of entertainment of
the local communities but foreign cultural troupes
from New Zealand, Korea, China, Indonesia and
West Malaysia, have thrilled the crowd with their
spell bounding performances before.
For those who just want to find a place to unwind
after a hard day’s work, sit around at the eating
places while enjoying the variety of food and
drinks. You will be surprised to find sumptuous
delicious food here which were once widely
available in yesteryears.
The BCF is a myriad of activities. So make yourself
available for the BCF, 3rd -11th July. You’ve got to
experience to know why it is called, “Beauty in
Ethnic Diversity.”

Hoover Memorial Square
Named after the great Methodist
missionary from USA, the late Pastor
James Mathew Hoover, this memorial
square is set to attract more tourists
to Sibu through religious tourism.
Located at Island Road, the project
when completed in August this year,
will house an exhibition hall for the
display of photographs and articles
relating to the history of Methodist
Church in the town. The building
housed a joint treasury office, an
administrative block, a library,
conference room, a 180-parking lot
bay and hostels for members.
who also wanted to start a Christian
colony. As both were on the same
plan, the Rajah advanced $20,000
to Wong Nai Siong for expenses to
bring in Chinese farmers from China.
Methodist Church denomination
started in Sarawak in 1901. In fact,
the early historical and economic
development of the Methodist Church
in Sarawak has its beginning in Sibu.
The church presently consists of the
Sarawak Chinese Annual Conference
(SCAC), the Sabah Mission Conference,
the Chinese Methodist Church in
Australia and New Zealand and the
Sarawak Iban Annual Conference
(SIAC).
In 1901, about 600 Chinese pilgrims,
of whom 90 per cent were affiliated
with the Methodist Church, set sail
in the ships Beng Hai and Hai Ceu.
Meanwhile, Bishop Warne who was on
his way from America to the Philippines
to conduct conferences, met the two
pilgrim ships in Hong Kong. He was
so impressed by this venture that he
cancelled his passage to Manila and
joined them on their great adventure.
The spread of the Methodist Church
to Sibu owed very much to the founder
of Sibu Foochow settlement, the late
Wong Nai Siong. In his plan to help
his poverty-stricken fellow Christians,
oppressed by the Boxer Rebellion
which had become anti-Christian and
in which persecution was prevalent,
Wong travelled through South East
Asia looking for a place to start a
Christian colony. He first visited Hong
Kong, then Singapore and finally
Sarawak. Upon his arrival in Sarawak,
he called on Rajah James Brooke
The Foochow immigrants touched
ground at Sungai Merah on 16th March
1901. Bishop Warne greatly helped
in the settlement and the establishment
of Methodist congregations in the
new habitat. Wong, who was a lay
preacher himself, brought in two
other groups of immigrants a year
later. The three phases of migration
totaled 1,118 men, of whom two
third were Methodist Christians. They
scattered about Sungei Merah and
the nearby land of Sungei Rejang
and began their new life of planting
potatoes, tapioca and vegetables
as well as rice. With the coming of
the Heng Hua Chinese in 1911, more
church buildings and schools were
constructed on a 300 acre site at Bukit
Lan, about 50 km from Sibu enrolling
both Chinese and Iban students.
After the Japanese occupation, the
Foochow immigrants who by nature
were extremely thrifty, hardworking
and gifted with business acumen,
began to move and establish
themselves in other towns in Sarawak.
As many of them were Methodist,
the church spread wherever they went:
Kapit 1953, Kuching 1954, Limbang
1956, Sarikei and Simmangang (now
Sri Aman) 1957, Miri 1965, Bintulu
1975 and Sabah 1980. Thus by
the mid 20th Century, the Chinese
Methodist Church covered virtually
all the major towns of every
Administrative Division of Sarawak
and Sabah. There are now 121
Methodist churches in Sarawak and
another 41 in Sabah.
The late Pastor James was the first
oversea’s pastor for the Methodist
Church in Sibu. He served the church
in the town from 1903-1935.
Yu Lon San Tien En Si Temple
Said to be the largest temple in Asia,
the newly built Yu Lon San Tien En Si
Temple of the three religious faiths,
Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism,
is now a new tourism draw for Sibu.
Even before its completion expected
end of this year, stream of visitors
from overseas have visited this
magnificent place of worship.

| BorneoTalkJul-Sept2009
To be exact, some 3,000 foreign tourists from far
and near have set foot in the temple. That speaks
volume how this temple would be a tourism icon for
Sibu. Located at KM26 Sibu-Bintulu Road or just half
an hour drive from the town, the temple is slated to
have its official opening on November 5 after more
than two years of construction.
One of the main attractions of the temple is that it
prominently features a set of 12 Chinese zodiac animals
on its left entrance. The temple is so huge that
inside it are four halls (dian) of Davejara (Tienwangdian),
Mahavira (Daxiiongbaodian), Maitreya (Miledian) and
Daomudian. The sight of such halls is set to enthrall
visitors as they are adorned with statues of Amitabh,
Gautama Buddha, Smiling Buddha, Weitao, eightarmed and four-faced Daomu Goddess and Dashizi
Bodhisattvra. Another star attraction of the temple
are the accessory halls on both sides of it – the Bell
and Drum towers, both furnished with the same
hexagonal windows and curved eaves.
In any ceremonial event, the drum would be beaten
and the bell rung. At the right side of the temple is
the Sutras Keeping Hall (cangjinglou) which keeps the
three treasures of the temple – Dazang sutras, gold
seals and the Buddha statues. Last but not least are
the statues of the legendary Tang monk, Xuan Zang,
a follower of Buddha, the Monkey God, also known
as Sung Mu Kong, Zhu Ba Chiat, the humorous pig
who transformed from a heavenly general for his
crime of assaulting a fairy and a sea monster Xa Zhen.
They are found in front of the pavilion.
For those intending to go to the temple, they should
make proper transport arrangements as it is quite a
distance from the town. The hotels can also assist
in making these arrangements for tourists to travel in
groups and save on cost and providing comradeship.

Sarawak Boleh Express Boat
Experience a new generation
of express boat ride!
Visitors to Sarawak must experience the scenic beauty of
its interiors to catch a glimpse of the legendary longhouses
of the Iban, the largest ethnic group in the state. Most
of these are found along the mighty Rajang River and
the best place to set up camp is Kapit, the riverine town,
some two and half hours of express boat ride from Sibu.
Sarawak Boleh Express Boat is a company that specialises
in this adventure trip, utilising a fleet of sleek and powerful
boats to take passengers from Sibu to many of the
riverine towns scattered over the interiors, including
Kapit. Come November-December this year, the company
will be introducing the Sarawak Boleh 268, latest express
boat plying between Sibu and Kapit on a daily basis.
This purpose built craft will have the usual comfort like
air conditioning and free movie shows on board and
different classes of seats ranging from VIP to 1st Class,
and Business to Economy, comfortably accommodating
151 people. Seats are specially designed and built by
German technology with ample leg room and VIP
passengers will enjoy the comfort of stretching their legs
at the upper deck of the boat during the trip.
Unlike the older generation boats, Sarawak Boleh 268
will be powered by Mitsubishi engines, using water jets
instead of propellers, giving a more quiet and comfortable
ride. As safety is a priority, the craft will have seven accessible
doors and at the bottom interior layer is a sensor, which
will trigger the alarm system if water gets inside the
lower hull. The five toilets inside adequately cater to the
needs of all passengers and as usual, the interior is tastefully
transformed to create an ambience for the pleasure of
the guests. Sarawak Boleh 268 will be distinctive in its
colour scheme, reflecting on the company’s tradition of
colouring each of its boat differently.
Sarawak Boleh 268 will also be berthed with the other
fleet of boats at the busy Sibu Express Boat Terminal,
just minutes from the town’s centre. For those new
to express boat experience, the Sarawak Boleh boats
feature comfortable settees with ample leg room in a
two-seat configuration arrangement for 1st class. For
the economy and business class, the seats are arranged
in rows of four each and the interior has ample room
for storage of bags and other goods carried by passengers.
Tickets can be bought on the spot when boarding for
Sibu or Kapit but to ensure that you get the seat and
time you want to travel, it is always good to make
bookings at the office at the Sibu Express Boat Terminal
or at the Kapit terminal.

FoodTalk
Smells good, tastes great
Sarawak is blessed with many races
living harmoniously together. The
locals will happily inform a visitor
to the state that and this leads to a
whole smorgasbord of food choices.
While Chinese and Malay cuisine
dominate, the other indigenous races,
namely the Iban, the Melanau and the
Bidayuh also have their own delicacies
and unique way of preparing them.
When in Kuching, Aroma Café is
the go-to place to try the very best in
authentic Bidayuh food. The eatery
is famous for its lunch meals, which
are prepared in the local fast food way.
So popular is the fare that people
often order takeaway and some even
bring their own stainless steel food
containers to do so. The fast food
lunch is finished by 1pm.
available. It can be served steamed
(teo chew or tom yam style) or deep
fried sweet and sour with Thai sauce.
Of course for those who prefer to eat
fish fillet, it can be served buttered,
with black pepper or Thai style. Red
telapia asam pedas is cooked in a
claypot. Those into eating catfish will
be happy to discover that it is grilled
here too and served with a special
sambal sauce for lunch every Tuesday.
Apart from fish, there is a wide
selection of squid and prawn dishes
that promise to tickle and titillate the
taste buds.
Over the years tourists from other
parts of Malaysia and from the rest
of the world have flocked to the café
to sample the food. Three things
stand out when it comes to the items
served here: reasonable prices, good
taste and generous portion size. The
fast food lunch meals (with rice) cost
from RM3 to RM5.50, and it must be
emphasised that this is the very best
in Bidayuh cuisine especially cooked
by the owner’s sister. Returning
customers continue to frequent Aroma
Café because they are truly satisfied
with the dining experience here. What’s
more two hotel-trained chefs are on
hand to cook up a variety of Western
and local fare. Be it grilled chicken
chop or wet beef kway tiaw, they
can cook it to perfection. Customers
are always pleasantly surprised to
find that they are spoilt for eating
choices at Aroma Café. There are
even those who patronise the place
strictly for a particular favourite dish.
Aroma Café is situated close to the
heart of town and is within walking
distance from the major hotels and

Of course there is more to Aroma

the local ulam (salad). The Bidayuh

for their ayam pansuh, or chicken
cooked in bamboo over an open fire.
The bamboo helps give the chicken
its distinctive smell and taste, and that
is what this eatery is all about. Unlike
many other eating establishments
in Kuching that serve this delicacy,
the ayam pansuh is cooked upon
ordering. This spot cooking insures
that the patrons get the freshest

Spicy ‘Bubur Pedas’ Porridge
Bubur Pedas or Spicy Porridge is a
speciality of the Sarawak Malays that
is traditionally served for breaking of
fast during the month of Ramadan.
The unique taste of the bubur
pedas boils down to the multitude
of ingredients used in its creation.
In fact the porridge is a complete
meal. Nowadays this spicy porridge
is cooked and served throughout
the year, and is a treat during family
gatherings and other special occasions.
The wonderful thing about the
porridge is that different meats and
veggies can be added according to
preference to further enhance its
taste. The porridge is only limited
by the cook’s imagination. However,
initially it is best to start with the
standard bubur pedas.
The most important ingredient in
the spicy porridge is the homemade
mumbu or paste. Uncooked rice is
cleaned and rinse-dried and set aside.
Coconut is grated and fry-dried to form
the kerisik. Initially coriander, cumin,
aniseed, cloves and cinnamon are
36

heated in a wok without any oil
for several minutes, then removed
and pounded in a mortar with a
pestle. This is set aside too. After
which a little lemon grass, ginger,
dried chillies, red onions and cloves
garlic are sliced and dried together
with tumeric powder and white
pepper powder. This is added to the
uncooked rice and pounded together
with the coconut paste. All this is
then mixed together with the rest of
the ingredients to form the mumbu.
Only 300gm of the mumbu will be
used to make the actual bubur pedas.
As the name implies, the porridge
is spicy, and to make it 10 dried
chillies (soaked in water, drained and
pounded) are used. A wok is heated.
Cooking oil is used. Red onions (15),
garlic cloves (8), the aforementioned
chillies and dried shrimps (50gm)
are added and browned. After that
the bubur pedas spice mixture is
mixed with water to make a paste
and added into the wok. Stir till
well blended and fragrant. Sliced
beef (500gm), cubed potatoes
(100gm) are added to the long beans
(150gm), lily flowers (100gm), dried
bean curd (140gm), black fungus
(50gm), vermicelli (100gm), turmeric
leaves (12), sengkel leaves (5) which
have all been finely sliced, is added
to this, and all the ingredients are
mixed well. Where necessary the
ingredients can be soaked in warm
water first to soften it. Coconut milk
(from 1-1.5kg of grated coconuts)
is poured in. The whole mixture is
stirred occasionally under high to
moderate heat until well cooked and
the gravy slightly thickens. Use more
milk if necessary. Salt is added to taste.
Today, like the famous Sarawak
laksa, the paste of the bubur pedas
is readily available throughout Malaysia.
So those who would like to try
this dish can easily find the
mumbu and save time
and effort preparing
the porridge in the
comfort of their
own kitchen.

Kuih Celorot
The Sarawak Malays are renowned for their traditional cakes
(kuih), which tend to be rich, moist and sweet. The main
ingredient is usually coconut milk, gula apong, rice flour and
eggs. What sets the cakes from those made in the other
regions of Malaysia are that gula apong is used instead of
gula Melaka. Gula apong is palm sugar and its distinctive
sweetness gives a big difference to the taste of the cakes
from Sarawak. Kuih celorot is the type of cake that brings
smiles from those familiar with it and wonder from those who
see it for the first time. Kids especially like the cake because of
the way it is wrapped in palm (nipah) leaves in a spiral shape
and the kuih has a springy texture. Initially such cakes were
popular during the fasting month, but over time they have
become a staple teatime item. In fact the kuih celorot is relatively
easy to prepare. The hardest part is the wrapping of the leaves.
One litre of coconut milk is heated together with palm sugar
(350gm) and 12 screw pine (or pandan) leaves until the gula
apong is dissolved. The mixture is removed from the heat.
Rice flour (250mg) is mixed with 200ml of thin coconut milk.
This is added to the heated coconut milk and sugary mixture,
and stirred until smooth. Eggs (three, beaten) are then added
and mixed well. This is poured carefully into the prepared
palm leaves and steamed for 10 to 15 minutes or until the
cakes are cooked.
Dadi Bisaya
The Bisaya community is one of
the many indigenous or “Orang
Ulu” communities of Sarawak that
comprise of the Kayan, Kenyah, Lun
Bawang, Kelabit, Penan, Kajang and
other minorities. They mostly inhabit
the upper reaches of Sarawak and
are traditionally farmers and collect
jungle produce and hunt for wildlife
to supplement their diet. Thus, the
Orang Ulu cuisine is the result of
their resourcefulness in making full
use of what Mother Nature offers
them. A typical example is the Dadi
Bisaya, which is a popular dessert of
the Bisaya community.
The Dadi Bisaya’s chief ingredient is
glutinous red rice. About 250gm of
the red rice is cleaned and drained.
In a saucepan, coconut milk from
250gm of grated coconut is
simmered with salt added to taste.
Then the rice is added. The pan is
then covered and left to simmer
till the rice is half cooked. Stirring
is done occasionally. When this is
done, the rice mixture is cooped into
portions of 2-3 tablespoons in size
and wrapped in the ‘nyirik’ leaves.
This is then steamed for about 5-8
minutes. This simple dessert can
be eaten on its own. Those with a
sweet tooth can take it with kaya
(local coconut jam). Dadi Bisaya
used to be a rare treat but today it is
made by other communities too and
can be enjoyed as a teatime treat.
Please note that all the above recipes were taken from “A Selection of the
Flavours of Sarawak”, published by SABATI (Sarawak Badan Amal Tenaga
Isteri-Isteri). The book is available for purchase and all proceeds will be donated to
charity. For further information, kindly contact (6) 082 449311 or (6) 082 416499.

Sarawak Laksa
Visitors to Sarawak are always taken
on a laksa tour of Kuching city’s
favourite stalls when it comes to food
sampling. For food connoisseurs, the
laksa is something that has to be tried
to know why it is the local favourite
and one that is fast becoming an
international icon for the state.
One of Asia’s television and gourmet
celebrity, Singaporean Moses Lim got
on the laksa trail while on the first
leg of his “food escapade tour” to
Kuching and subsequently gave the
thumbs up to the unique spicy blend
of beehoon (rice flour noodle), spices
and sprinkling of shredded chicken,
eggs, prawns and bean sprouts
concoction. Even after tasting a
number of laksa outlets, Moses was
still undecided on his own favourite
one, choosing instead to give two
thumbs up to the lot!
gaining international
popularity
“It all depends on individuals
whether they like their serving spicy
and with thick and creamy gravy or
otherwise,” said Moses, who readily
admitted that Sarawak had wide
variety of local delicacies that could
be promoted as a tourist attraction
among food lovers worldwide. Apart
from Moses, the production crew
and his wife also remained just as
undecided when it came to making
their choices on their favourites
and this wonderful agreement on
disagreement would be part of their
selling point when they will be leading
a group of tourists here on the Sarawak
Laksa Escapade tour.
The recently launched laksa tour
is part of Sarawak Tourism Board’s
(STB) new packages to bring in
tourists to the state. These trips can
be just a quick short tour of the
city’s favourite food outlets or an
extended tour of the diverse range
of food unique to the state in all the
different towns in Sarawak. While
here, Moses and his crew also tried
the kolo mee, beef noodle, midin
fried with belacan, chicken pansoh,
umai, prawn noodle, belacan beehoon,
oyster omelette, seafood like ambal
(bamboo clam), prawn, fish and crab
and even linut (sago flour mixed with
boiling water).
As every visitor to the state will
testify, food is a unique thing here
as the multi-ethnic and multi-culture
people each produce their own
specialty that has to be tasted to
know! Other well renowned chefs
too have been to Sarawak to sample
these diverse food and came away
pleasantly surprised and enriched
as they also add to their repertoire
of cooking skills and taste from this

are required to conduct research on
selected topics to produce high quality
products. The students’ creativity is
manifested through a variety of media
and techniques. This academic
exhibition is one of the core activities
of the Faulty. It is meant to expose
students to the hands-on experience
of organising and managing events,
and to the art of communicating
with members of the public. Such
experiences will instill in the students
a sense of responsibility, esprit de corps
as well as a pride and appreciation for
their own creations.

issues such as your lifestyle that may be
causing the acne...then I’m not giving
you the best care,” he stresses.
CAH, says Miller, is unlike other wellness
centre or medi-spas available around here.
It is currently undergoing renovation
whereby CAH will be a one-stop centre.
Luxurious massage and spa treatments
were pretty much unheard of in Kuching
years ago. But they have since become
a rage among the society here who
constantly seek to pamper and beautify
themselves in one of the many wellness
centres that offer aesthetic services
ranging from relaxing massages to
chemical peels.
However, how much can these centres,
which are mostly operated by beauticians,
guarantee in terms of results? As clients
who pay a substantial amount of money
to beautify themselves, are they given
assurance that they are in good hands?
Normah Medical Specialist Centre (NMSC)
consultant surgeon for aesthetic health,
Dr Adam Miller says that it’s mutual that
everyone wants to look their best.
“People know that they don’t want to
look as tired and they would rather have
better skin. If they can find a treatment
which can help improve their skin condition, they are willing to do so,” he says.
“Apart from excellent facial, massage
and manicure-pedicure services carried
out by therapists from Thailand and
Indonesia, we will also be adding
thermage and fraxil laser treatments,
chemical peels, dermabrasions, eyelash
extensions, laser hair removal, electrolysis
and waxing just to name a few,” he
says, adding that there will also be
a body contour area to help clients
achieve their goal for their ideal body.
Miller, a Board Certified Maxillofacial
Surgeon from the eastern United
States is offering multiple clinical
treatments that include Botox as well
as eyelid surgeries, cheek and chin
implants, face-lifts and liposuction.
Another highlight of CAH is the sleep lab,
a first that has yet to been incorporated
at aesthetic centres worldwide.
“Sleep is an important component of
overall aesthetic health as the Human
Growth Hormone (HGH) is the most
valuable natural rejuvenators that we
have and it’s only produce significantly
when you sleep,” says Miller.
In order to cater to the growing demand
for aesthetic health here, NMSC has
established the Centre for Aesthetic
Health (CAH) which aims towards a
more holistic approach to the idea of
cosmetic and beauty treatments.
“Every 90 minutes our pituatary gland
will release HGH but this is many times
greater when you sleep. This is important
because it repairs collagen, nerves,
muscles. And yet most people in today’s
modern society are not taking advantage
of their natural rejuvenator because
they’re not stopping to get some sleep.”
“First of all, the philosophy behind this
is to give people the absolute best care
just like in cardiology or in any other
range of medicine,” explains Miller,
who is also director for the centre.
“That is the power of HGH and is truly
natural rejuvenation. The centre will be
taking that into account and I think that is a
unique aspect of our centre that I have not
seen anywhere else around the world.”
“It’s not just about making money...the
upside of looking at this is to ultimately,
give the best treatments to clients. If I
know that I have treatments that can
help treat your acne but I don’t address
Rejuvenation also starts with helping
people smile more. For some, this
means adding confidence to their smile
with dental implants, a field which
Miller is also an expert.
“For others that means helping them
achieve better sleep,” he promises.
Each particular treatment conducted
at CAH will be customised to suit each
client’s preference.
“We’ll be providing them with a very
comfortable space where they can feel a
sense of membership and combining
packages for people to suit their lifestyle,”
Miller says, adding that staff at CAH
include a dietitian and nutritionist.
As reasons for aesthetic care are
private and individual, CAH also prides
itself in giving clients a sense of privacy.
“The centre is located on the fourth floor
of NMSC, where the whole area will be
dedicated for our aesthetic treatments
providing clients with service while at
the same time giving them privacy. We
also have a Pinnacle Room where it is a
private waiting area for clients.”
From a cosy environment, to friendly,
professional staff, a variety of effective
aesthetic solutions and comprehensive pain
management techniques, CAH, which
caters to both male and female clients, will
be able to help you achieve your aesthetic
desires with minimal discomfort.
“CAH is going to be a one-stop
centre where you can come and get a
comprehensive approach to aesthetic
health. Hopefully people will really
appreciate the fact that they can come
here and trust that we’re going to give
them high quality programmes that
they can stick to for months or even
years,” assures Miller.
The facility is completed and those who
are interested in starting a program can

and exporters to ensure that the product will have consistent supply and

Private sector input and expertise, community participation and
government assistance in the various smart partnerships along the
chain contributed to this venture too. Realising the need to have
such close cooperation and entrepreneurship spirit, the Bumiputera
Entrepreneur Development Unit sourced and secured these contracts
with the various parties with the aim of providing business opportunities
to all in the state. The effort paid off with the establishment of contract
farming between the farmers and private companies in various
parts of the states i.e., in Santubong, Bau, Sempadi and Samarahan
whereby the farmers were assured of the demand for their tapioca
produced and at reasonable prices. With the large land area possible
for such planting, the once idle and peat soil areas can now become
productive lands in the state and thus generate income to farmers.
According to the Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department,
YB Tuan Haji Naroden Haji Majais at the recent launching of the
shipment to London, the people must continue to be creative in
their various fields of expertise and to team up with others to achieve
their dreams. He reiterated that the smart partnership concept must be
emphasised if more entrepreneurs are to achieved their aims and
to expand their market share. In the globalised world the single
professional is no longer a viable business model as business people
need to have a global perspective to grow and also to become
global citizens in whatever they do. Only in this way can they remain
relevant and also able to change quickly
based on market demands and
expectations, he added. In the

Women and Family Council seeks to
create women as equally capable in
contributing to the development of the
state and nation.
When the Women Council Sarawak
was established in 1989, one of its
main objectives was to strengthen
women’s participation and welfare
in view of the nation’s vision of
development. Its role was to advocate
and advice on women’s views to
the government, private sector and
others on policy matters including law,
regulations and development among
others. This would then increase
women’s participation in all fields
and contribute meaningfully in the
development of the family, society

“As stated in its mission statements,
there were five main areas that
women’s participation would focused
on,” said Chairperson of the Women
and Family Council, YB Datin

In this aspect, changes in the laws

where women would contribute

In line with these main areas of

The industrious and filial women in

In Malaysia the Manzano name is synonymous with
uncompromising perfection. What many might not
know is how Jimmy Choo, the man behind the brand,
came up with the name in the first place. Jimmy Choo
designs the very best and most unique in furniture.
Manzano Concept is named after the chair-manufacturing
district in the extreme Northeast of Italy. Manzano
used to be world famous for it’s chairs. Today it has
been battered by cheaper Chinese produced ones. A
giant 23-ton chair is a reminder of the town’s more
prosperous times.
Uncompromising Perfection
What better way to highlight the quality of his furniture
then to choose a name that has a proud tradition of
once producing the finest chairs in Europe and the
world. Jimmy tries to carry on that legacy in his own
products. Whenever anyone purchase a Manzano
Concept furniture they are assured of getting the very
best for their money. Jimmy’s attention to detail starts
from the moment of the design. He has learnt how
the other renown furniture companies produce
their furniture and gone the extra kilometer to make
sure that his is even better. That’s why Jimmy dares to
give a 6-year guarantee and free first cleaning service,
which is unheard of in the local furnishing business.
To continue to better serve his customers Jimmy has
come up with an exclusive VIP lifetime membership
card. The magnetic-swipe card records all customers’
purchases on a database for future reference, and
customers are entitled to another 5% discount on
top of existing discounts. Upon signing up for the card
customers will be given a one-of-a-kind key chain and
an exclusive towel.
Manzano Concept will be celebrating its 3rd anniversary
in early July. To commerate this occasion new products
will be unveiled and special discounts will be offered.
What this means is that customers will have more choices.
Manzano continues to grow and has spread to the United
Kingdom, Australia and China. In Malaysia Jimmy’s
furniture is sold in Seremban, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching
and Miri. What’s more Manzano also sells the very best in
mattress from Europe, the U.S. and Australia. Drop by at

Dr. Adam C. Miller
MD - DDS (Director of The Centre of Aesthetic Health - Borneo)
- an interview with BorneoTalk -
cosmetic and view it as a means for
restoring healthier skin”. The Centre
for Aesthetic Health will apply this
spirit to, not just skin, but the overall
rejuvenation of our patients. My
charge is to make my patients the
best version of themselves. In order to
achieve this, I must consider everything
from what my patients are eating and
their dental health to their sleep and
fitness. Patients are being told that
great, lasting results can be achieved
with a superficial approach to beauty.
This does not feel right to me.
Aesthetic Health - could you please
explain more on this and how this is
a driving force in today’s society:
Dr. M: A recent article in Forbes
magazine (online) reported that
many older professionals are seeking
cosmetic enhancement to compete
with their younger colleagues. I see
this as one indicator of the power
that beauty has in the industrialised
world. Let’s consider topical cosmetic
products. By 2012, in the U.S. alone,
the cosmeceutical industry is expected
to top $20 billion USD. Throughout
Asia we are seeing the same growth
in sales of beauty products. I believe
many of these dollars are being wasted
due to lack of public education, lack of
regulation and a “fast-food” perspective
on cosmetic surgery. Dr. Zein Obagi,
founder of Obagi skin products, made
a statement in the preface to his 1999
book (Skin Health / Restoration &
Rejuvenation) that reflects my philosophy.
“For the field of skin rejuvenation to
move forward, (we) must abandon
the notion that rejuvenation is strictly

Would you recommend treatment
for those who suffer from low self
esteem? Sometimes women, and
even men will want to improve
their looks even though they are
naturally alright with no major
deficiencies:
Dr. M: Great question. Let me try to
explain my approach. The desire to
look one’s best is natural. Even the
preacher at church combs his hair
carefully and wears nice clothes that
fit well. Michael Jordan, the famous
ex-NBA star, replied to a question
about his clothing line with, “you
have to look good to feel good and
feel good to play good.” More and
more adults are now wearing braces
to straighten their teeth for a more
beautiful smile. We like people who
smile. They seem happy. For most,
looking our best, helps us feel and
perform at our best. And modern
marketing takes full advantage of
that. It comes down to expectations.
I am eager to improve a patient’s self
esteem through rejuvenation. I am
very reluctant to take on a patient
who is lost and is trying to become
a different person through a few
procedures. It is hard to fully answer
this question without touching on
spiritual fitness. I encourage patients
to explore their heart and find deeper
meaning in their life.

There’s more to good health than dieting and managing disease. Integrative
approachers to improving one’s sense of radiance and beauty is part of the new Centre for
Aesthetic Health at Normah under Dr. Adam C. Miller, consultant surgeon from USA.
At what age should one be before
seeking medical treatment for long
term healthy condition in later age?
Dr. M: This is where public education
becomes so important. Let me offer
some practical suggestions that your
readers may appreciate. I recognise
a great desire among the people of
Sarawak to have a beautiful smile, yet
there is profound dental neglect. Early
intervention with a dentist can help
prevent major long term problems, and
is always less expensive than waiting
until “it gets really bad”. Having said
that, due to recent advances, I am
placing dental implants in 70 and 80
year old patients with great success.
Regarding skin. Untreated acne can
leave devastating, lifelong scars on the
face. Therefore, teenagers with acne
should see a physician like myself. We
know that the natural production of
collagen starts to decline around the
age of 21 years. The early 20’s is an
ideal time to get both women and men
on a preventative skin care regimen,
replace bad teeth and talk about
lifestyle issues. Keeping a young person
from smoking and educating them on
the connection between lifestyle and
beauty is invaluable.
What are the major advantages of
coming to the one stop centre for
treatment when compared to other
private practitioners?
Dr. M: The Centre for Aesthetic Health
has one great advantage. It is based at
a top-notch hospital, Normah Medical
Specialist Centre. We realise that for
many patients, time and convenience
are the main obstacles to achieving
their health goals. Because we have
a neurologist, dietician, physical
therapists, highly trained nurses and
estheticians, radiology, and a sleep lab
there will be no cutting of corners with
patient care. We are positioned to
deliver comprehensive care and superior
results in a convenient manner.
When did you first discover that
this was the medical path you
would be pursuing in life? Was it
what you had anticipated it would
be and would you recommend it to
others?
Dr. M: I started college as an art
major and enjoyed drawing and
sculpting. Even as a child I was called
to art as a way of expression. My
work now feels like more art than
science. I declined offers during
residency to join the dermatology or
plastic surgery fields. Those were
difficult decisions. But, abandoning
my advanced training in sleep apnea
and dental implants just did not settle
well with me. And now, my practice
success has been based on being
able to reconstruct a patient’s mouth,
rejuvenate their face and help them
achieve better sleep. I am putting
both my dental degree and medical
degree to great use everyday. And
patients seem to really appreciate my
practice scope. Many of my dental
implant patients go on to have facial
rejuvenation and sleep analysis. As for
the field of cosmetic surgery, I walk
cautiously and encourage my younger
colleagues to do the same. Maintain
diversity in your practice. Do not
allow your business responsibilities
to compromise your treatment
decisions. By performing dental implant
surgeries, sleep apnea procedures, I
never feel like I must perform a facial
cosmetic surgery. The diversity of my
practice gives me the luxury to be
completely honest and selective with
my cosmetic patients. I urge patients
to be alert to “pressured sales.”
Unfortunately this is common in the
cosmetic surgery industry. I want no
part of that.
Why Sarawak? Of the numerous
places you could have gone to,
coming here must be quite a
sacrifice to you and family. How
do you cope with this and has the
family adapted to this?
Dr. M: Believe me, many people are
asking me this question right now.
You are right. At this time I could go
just about anywhere. My practice in
the US is amazing. I could not ask
for a better staff, more money or a
better schedule of patients. We are
busy, challenged and profitable.
But my response is, “why not Sarawak?”
Malaysia has a huge need for
education and the development of
standards related to cosmetic surgery,
dental implants and sleep. I feel
custom made to respond to these
needs. On a personal note, I love
to travel and plan to explore the
eastern part of the world. The pace
is refreshing; excellent scuba diving is
close and I am a big fan of the food.
Sarawak has a personality that invites
healing of the body and the soul. I
believe that all of this provides a
recipe for success. There is a lack of
equipment, training and understanding
right now, but I am confident in the
people responsible for those parts.
We are creating something currently
not found anywhere else in the world
- The Centre for Aesthetic Health at
Normah.
If you have one major advice to
people here, in terms of health,
what would that be?
Dr. M: In my two months at
Normah, I have observed severe
dental neglect. Infections in teeth
and the jaw bones are known to
cause an increase in heart attacks
and spontaneous abortions. From
a cosmetic standpoint, loss of teeth
and bone cause the face to “fall.” So,
take your oral health more seriously.
There is much more to say, but it will
have to wait for your first appointment
at The Centre for Aesthetic Health.
Thank you so much for this discussion.
I truly enjoyed your questions.

My memories
Member of Parliament Nancy Shukri reminisces the fond
Time flies so fast that I felt it was just yesterday the
late Datuk Amar sat next to me on the plane while on
our way back to Kuching. She was sharing with me
about Vitamin B17, a possible treatment to cancer
and, barely two days after, she sent her driver to my
house ( a great effort made on her part) just to deliver
articles on Vitamin B17 and a list of healthy goods to
consume. She had always left people with a lasting
impression and always been remembered as a warm
person once we got to know her.
I had the opportunity to work closely with her on
women activities. She was once a Deputy Chairman
for the Sarawak Federation of Women Institutes [WI]
before she left for Kuala Lumpur to join her beloved

husband. During the WI’s 40th anniversary celebration
the WI’s Exco members paid her a courtesy visit. Datuk
Amar asked me “Why didn’t you ever come and see
me? I’m glad that you came to see me now”. I was
then Deputy Chairman for WI. Her concern really
touched me and of course, it means a lot to the WI
community as well.
Sarawak had been very lucky to have her as the top
leader’s wife. She has played her role so well that
many, who have worked with her would be able to
appreciate her sincerity and her genuineness in carrying
out her passion on environmental conservation. She
was personally involved in the planting of trees, in
ensuring the “greens” are preserved and in planning

of Laila
moments of her encounters with the late
Datuk Amar Dr. Hajah Laila Taib, wife of the Chief Minister of Sarawak
the number and locations of trees to be planted.
She was also committed towards the aesthetic
values of buildings in the city; to ensure that the heritage
buildings were well maintained. On women NGOs
(non government organisations) she had not only
been the pillar of strength for the Chief Minister but
also the women NGO leaders. She gave us guidance
on how NGOs could help the rest of the community.
Having had casual times with Datuk Amar, I could feel
her warmness and learnt a lot about how much she
had to sacrifice as an expatriate joining her husband
in a backward state like Sarawak in those days. Her
patience paid her with a happy family. The Almighty
blessed her with vast knowledge for her to generously
share with us in Sarawak. The Chief Minister, Pehin Sri
Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud and his beloved children are
not the only ones who mourned the loss of a wonderful
woman, the whole state of Sarawak and the whole
nation too, had felt the great loss of a great asset.
However, the Almighty loved her more than anyone
else and laid her to rest in peace.
The late Datuk Amar was a great inspiration to me
through her undivided support towards women’s
activities. Her determination to help develop women
from all walks of life are visible by the uncountable
things that we could see today. One of them is the
setting up of the Sabati Women’s Museum. She never
failed to share with us what she learned and saw
from other parts of the world. It made us feel that we
have been to the places that she mentioned to us.
How I wished I could write more new paragraph
about her in this column, but it sufficed to say that
Datuk Amar had always share with us about family
values; our role as mothers, as wives and as women. I
can never forget her “free” motivational talks. Sitting
with her was an enriching experience for me. Indeed
she was a woman with a charitable heart and she will
always be remembered for as long as I live, because
she made me learn a lot about life, noble contributions
were cherished by all, especially the women of Sarawak.
May her soul be blessed by Allah the Almighty. Amin.

‘A major decision about me is being made, and no one’s
bothered to ask the one person who most deserves it
to speak her opinion.’ The only reason Anna was born
was to donate her cord blood cells to her older sister.
And though Anna is not sick, she might as well be. By age
thirteen, she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions,
and shots so that her sister, Kate, can somehow fight the
leukaemia that has plagued her since she was a child.
Anna was born for this purpose, her parents tell her,
which is why they love her even more. But now that she
has reached an age of physical awareness, she can’t help
but long for control over her own body and respite from
the constant flow of her own
blood seeping into her sister’s
veins. And so she makes
a decision that for most
would be too difficult to
bear, at any time and at
any age. She decides to
sue her parents for the
rights to her own body.
