A M ESSA G E F ROM R ABBI RO S E N B AUM
God in Search
of Man
D
o we find God or does God find us? In our Tradition,
it’s both. The Torah depicts God as searching for us. In
Genesis 2, we see God creating Adam, and then deciding
that ‘it is not good for the man to be alone.’ So, God and Adam
together begin a search process to find the perfect companion
for Adam. As a first step, God creates the animals. It’s as if God
were saying, “maybe a pet will cheer Adam up.” Adam enjoys the
companionship of the lions and the bears, but something is still
missing. So, God creates Eve out of Adam’s own body, and this time
there is an unmistakable spark.
Only as a result of this search for understanding does Abraham hear
the voice of God speaking to him.
We are natural seekers. And the seeking takes many forms. This
summer, many of us will travel to a new environment. For some of
us it will be summer camp. Others of us might travel to a distant
country or to another part of America. Still others of us might travel
more metaphorically with a good book that takes our mind to new
horizons. All of this is seeking behavior. Being created in God’s
image, we have a need to continually wander into new territory.
That’s how we learn and grow.
Whatever form our travels take this summer, may our explorations
open our eyes to new understanding. And, may we return home
with a deepened appreciation of the wonders of the universe and
our place in it.
Shalom,
Rabbi Rosenbaum
What’s intriguing about the Torah’s account is that while this story
is unfolding, a parallel search process has begun. Apparently, it’s
not only humans who need companionship. It’s also not good for
God to be alone. The first eleven chapters of the Torah describe God
as seeking a partner who will really understand Him. God creates
human beings in God’s image and there seems to be a dream tucked
into that creation.
But, the dream initially remains unfulfilled. We frustrate God. Cain
kills Abel. The people of Noah’s generation are corrupt. Even after
the Flood, we don’t seem to have learned our lesson. We build a
tower to heaven to ‘make a name for ourselves,’ as if this were our
highest aspiration.
And, then God finds Abraham. Finally, someone God can talk to.
Someone who can even be a second pair of eyes for God’s ideas,
someone who seems to intuit what God wants most from human
beings. And, the rest of the Tanach is about God and us trying to
establish a relationship with each other, with all of the ups and
downs that are present in even the best of relationships.
For the most part, in the Bible, it’s God who initiates the
conversation and we who respond (or don’t). But fast forward to
the age of the rabbis, 1,300 years after Moses. Where the Bible has
God calling Abraham, in the midrash it’s the reverse. Abraham is
described as a person in search. He is like a man who wanders from
place to place until he finds a palace all lit up. He wonders aloud, “Is
it possible that this palace has no master?” The owner looks out and
says, “I am the master of the house.”
In this midrashic parable, it is Abraham who searches for God. Later
rabbis explain Abraham’s ‘wandering’ as a quest to understand the
deepest truths about life. He explores every avenue of knowledge.
In today’s language we might say that Abraham studies science,
art, music and philosophy. He learns from direct experience with
human relationships. Who knows? Maybe he even plays basketball.

P R ES I DE N T ’S ME S S AG E
Personal
Reflections
A
t my house, the last few weeks of school brought a thirst for
summer sunshine, finals panic, graduations, picnics and
lazy days of not getting up early. As school wound down,
the anticipation for summer camp always took over. How many days
until we leave for Camp Solomon Schechter was a question often
asked - and the countdown would begin. As my kids got too old to
be campers, the thrill of actually getting paid to spend the summer
at the happiest place on earth (and I don’t mean Disneyland)
became the new theme. Robbie spent most of last summer traveling,
a hard decision to make only because it meant missing being a
counselor at Camp. At the final hour, Robbie called Camp Director,
Sam Perlin, and begged to be a counselor just for the Aleph Session.
Ah, a 10-day camp fix!
So what is it about Camp Schechter that makes our kids want to be
immersed in Jewish life, prayer and song, constantly surrounded by
friends and how do we bottle that magic and make it last all year? I
think the answer lies in the lifelong relationships built through the
camp experience and the comfort and familiarity of living Judaism
on a daily basis.
I never had the privilege of attending summer camp so have only
lived the experience vicariously through my husband and children.
Some of Dave’s lifelong friends and best memories are from his days
at Camp Schechter. The same holds true for Tammy and Robbie. My
brother-in-law, Michael, has memories so fond of Camp Schechter
that he is sending his son to camp here this summer, all the way
from St. Louis.
A group of lay leadership, staff and clergy have spent many hours
these past few months analyzing our youth programs at HNT.
We have talked extensively about new ways to engage our teens
and how to create an atmosphere and programming that make
Kadima and USY events the cool place to be. Our new Livnot high
school program has added another facet to the teen experience for
HNT youth. Our Board of Directors recognized the critical role
HNT plays in developing the next generation of Jews by keeping
our youth engaged. The time from post-bar mitzvah through
young adult is a very challenging age group to keep connected
to synagogue life. It takes creativity, funding and staff to ensure
we don’t lose this demographic to the myriad of other activities
available to them. And it probably takes creation of a little
“camp magic.”
To face this challenge, our youth commission, chaired by Iris
Schwartz, joined with a newly formed youth task force, chaired by
Brad Lehrer, have collaborated to hire a part time Youth Director.
We are thrilled to welcome Dawn Shelley who joined us in midApril to oversee our teen programs. Dawn is already hard at work
4
integrating herself into our staff, creating relationships in the school
community, and preparing a schedule of creative outreach programs
for our teens. We are excited to see our youth programs grow in the
coming year. I encourage you to welcome Dawn and to share your
passion and vision for our youth with her.
I want to personally thank the dedicated group that participated in
the hiring process--Iris Schwartz, Michael Tischler, Ruth Raskind,
Brad Lehrer, Bob Zimmerman and Brianna Roberts, as well as
Rabbi Rosenbaum, Rabbi Levy and Nadine Strauss. A special yasher
koach to Iris, who is “graduating” from being Youth Commission
chair after many years.
I wish you all a sunny and peaceful summer and hope you create
some camp magic of your own!
Shalom,
Julie Ellenhorn

Services: July 15: 9:00 PM and July 16: 2:00 PM
Memory is one of the most vital parts of being human. Every year
we gather together along with Jewish communities around the world
to remember our tragedies and to commemorate them. The Jewish
people lost the first and second Temples on the 9th of the Hebrew
month of Av, and there have been many tragedies that have befallen
our people on this date. Join us this year for a meaningful and
solemn commemoration of these tragedies, as we go from
darkness to light.

CONG R EG ATION AL L E AR N I NG
Summer Edition:
Adventures in
Judaism
P
rofessor Judah Goldin said “Texts and experiences are
mutually enlightening.” At the Frankel Religious School, we
understand that a person cannot just “study” Judaism but they
have to live it and experience it.
Therefore, Congregation Beth Shalom and Herzl-Ner Tamid are
excited to announce Adventures in Judaism, a new program designed
to complement your 8th grade religious school studies next year. The
program consists of two joint sessions of learning and social action
(one in the fall and one in the spring, dates TBA), culminating in a
weekend Shabbaton in Portland, Oregon.
At the fall and spring sessions, students will get to know one another
better as they learn about issues of affordable housing in
the Seattle area and discuss related Jewish texts and ideas. On the
Shabbaton, students will concertize their learning, and expand it with
a meaningful social justice project in Portland. We will be hosted
in Portland by 8th graders and their families from Congregation
Shaarei Torah. We look forward to sharing the weekend with them,
including hanging out on Shabbat afternoon in nearby Forest Park
playing Frisbee and other games, taking part in local fun on Saturday
night. The weekend will be led by Rabbi Lauren Kurland, who has
extensive experience in Jewish education and social justice work
and who teaches at both HNT and CBS. We encourage you to watch
for details on your calendar; it promises to be a fun-filled and eye
opening experience.
We have applied for a grant with the Jewish Federation of Greater
Seattle in order to subsidize the cost of the program. Once we learn
the final results of our application, we will finalize & announce the
program’s cost. Regardless of receipt of the grant, however, we are
committed to offering this wonderful opportunity for our students to
learn more about social action & build meaningful
community together.
Also, please note that in order to be eligible for the Shabbaton,
students must be enrolled in the standard 8th grade religious school
programs at either Beth Shalom or Herzl-Ner Tamid (ie. The Chat
and Chow) and must attend both the fall and spring joint sessions of
Adventures in Judaism.
Keep your eye out for more information—including cost and
instructions for registration. We hope that all of our 8th graders will
join us in Adventures in Judaism!
Missing Religious School Already?
Cure those summertime blues by registering for the 2013-2014

JFS Food Collection & Sort
Join Lana Finegold June 9 & 30, July 7 and August 4 at 10:00 AM
at the entry garden by the first breezeway. Bring a trowel, pruning
shears and gardening gloves. If removing blackberries is your thing,
wear appropriate gloves and gear. We will weed, prune and tidy up
the grounds. Special thanks to Scott Perry, Florence Katz Burstein
and Aileen Okrent who have helped on prior gardening days. We
filled the recycle bin with blackberry vines and weeds.
Good job everyone!
Anyone can help. School is out, bring your children. The garden
areas grow weeds as well as desirable plants. More helpers make
work light, so come beautify HNT. Lana can be available weekdays
too and other Sundays. Call to let her know you are coming:
425-747-5742.
On average, over 1,800 people per month need the Jewish Family
Service Polack Food Bank. In spite of everyone’s generous donations
of food, last year the demand exceeded the supply by over 150,000
lbs. (75 tons). Let’s work together to fill the food pantry shelves
and provide families in need with healthy, nutritious food options.
Dean & Gwenn Polik and Valerie Polack are once again generously
contributing a matching gift for every item we collect.
Last year, HNT collected 4,800 lbs. This year, help us make it to
5,000! Please remember that we cannot accept previously opened
items, glass jars or perishables. The particular needs this year are
canned tuna, peanut butter, cooking oil and canned sauces.
Volunteers Needed!
Join us Sunday, September 15 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM for the
JFS Food Sort! We’ll meet at HNT for Morning Minyan, then pack
the food collected, transport it to the JFS warehouse, and help sort
donations from across the city. To volunteer, email [email protected].
Please place items in the marked bins in the Upper and Lower Foyers.

Wondering why
the parking lot
looks different?
To facilitate the process when
sharing our lot with other
institutions, we have numbered
the spaces. These numbers do
not affect our own parking
availability, so members and
guests may still park in any
space when visiting HNT.

Mitzvah Corps
Mitzvah: A commandment of the Jewish law;
a meritorious or charitable act
D
uring the High Holiday season last fall Rabbi Rosenbaum and
I urged everyone to perform at least one “mitzvah” throughout the year; many of you have stepped up and done just that
and more through your involvement in Mitzvah Corps. I know others of you have completed your own “mitzvot” in additional ways.
Mitzvah Corps continues to be an active group with an outstanding
core of volunteers, and I want to personally thank each of you who
continue to step up and take on projects. Often we will get a
last-minute request to help out a congregant, and even though it
seems impossible or impractical to accommodate, one or more of
our super volunteers will come through.
In addition to whatever needs might arise for our congregants
throughout the year, Mitzvah Corps’ ongoing projects include
weekly Shabbat challah and wine deliveries, and assembling and
distributing High Holiday Goody Bags in time for Rosh Hashanah.
Because everyone’s timeframe and skill set are different, Mitzvah
Corps lets you pick and choose what mitzvot you wish to be a part
of, as well as how often you want to help out. I ask you to consider
being a part of Mitzvah Corps; besides providing comfort, warmth
and caring through your mitzvot, you will find that you are getting
back more than you are giving.
Contact me at [email protected]; I look forward to hearing
from you.

Daytimers Spring 2013 Film Series: jewish relationships with gentiles
The final film of the series on June 19,
GENTLEMAN’S AGREEMENT, is a
classic that you haven’t seen in the last
half century, but is still an important
and timely movie. It was one of the first
films to tackle religious intolerance
directly, winning three Oscars in the
process. After the film we will have an
open discussion about how much (or
how little?) things have changed since
1947 when the film was made.
Mark your calendar for next year’s Daytimers and
look out for film titles in future issues of HaKol:
Fall Series: October 16, November 20, December 18
Winter Series: January 15, February 19, March 19
Spring/Summer Series: April 30, May 21, June 18
All films are at
Herzl-Ner Tamid
$7.00/person for lunch
Films follow lunch, served
11:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Reserve by the Friday before the
event so that we may prepare for you!

Swedish SummeRun
Sunday July 21 • Race begins at 8:15 AM
Swedish Medical Center, First Hill, Seattle
$20 pre-registration fee through May 31, $30 through July 31
Swedish SummeRun (5K Run/5K Walk)was begun in 1993 by Saul Rivkin, MD, and his five daughters, with the
help and support of Swedish Medical Center, in memory of Marsha Rivkin z”l, a beloved HNT member, and in
recognition of the ongoing fight against this deadly disease. Since 1993, Swedish SummeRun has raised over $4
million towards ovarian cancer research.
We continue to assist in loving memory of HNT members Marsha Rivkin, Babs Fisher, and Gail Stulberg. Money
raised from SummeRun will help the Marsha Rivkin Center in its mission to save lives and reduce suffering through
improved treatment, early detection, and prevention of ovarian cancer. 100% of proceeds benefit the Marsha Rivkin
Center for Ovarian Cancer Research.
Help make 2013 the best year ever as we run or walk in support of this great cause! Contact this year’s Team HNT
Captains Sylvia Angel (425-277-9088, [email protected]) and Judy Ziedman (425-883-6482, [email protected]).
